Where do these terrorists get ATGMs from? How is it so easy for them?
Saudi/Gulf States ->Syria->Libya/Sinai

as before, egyptian army will ask the permit of israel to let them launch a massive operation in sinai , and send in sinai tanks , f16, apach ... , kill hundreds terrorists arrest hundreds others then return to its position and let in sinai only military levels set in the Camp David Accords and demilitarized area .
Makes sense though.

Isreal would get nervous if Egypt deployed large forces to the Sinai.

.
There are 196 countries in the world.

That means we are "only ahead" of 174 countries.

Not just Azerbaijan and Kazakistan

You have demonstrated a prime example of: Bending reality to suit your beliefs.

Henry240:
In as much as he is a pacifist, the comments he put out in his post aren't emotions. He laid down clear facts. Denel was a loss making company for periods of time until they got a bailout from the South-African government.

If AMSCOR could go into bankruptcy in the 80s when the Apartheid government was spending almost 5% of GDP on Defence, and so doing subsidizing the SA defence industry, it surely means things aren't going to look great now that funds are scarce.
ARMSCOR did not go "bankrupt" in the 1980's.

Denel went "bankrupt" in the 1990's after it was split from ARMSCOR due to a number of reasons.

Namely, because they invested billions of Rands into projects that the SANDF then cancelled - examples of these projects: Indigenous fighter jet, Indigenous Frigate, Indigenous Submarine, Indigenous ASM.

If you come from a buisness background, I dont think I need to explain why these projects caused liquidity issues within the company in the 1990's.

Bending reality to suit beleifs

Henry240:
There is also the issue of corruption in the SA defence industry.
Are these no facts, Denel running into bankruptcy, corruption in the SA defence industry, Amscor bankruptcy and the Cameron commission of inquiry?

Are you saying all these things are made up?
Yes they are made up.

Henry240:
You have listed some of the issues. South-Africa cannot compete on big ticket items. It's simply not possible. Countries like China have proven to be bullish in the entire defence market, offering state of the art defence systems, which are cost effective. you also have to deal with the other big partners Russia, USA and Europe (where most of the components used in building SA defence equipment come from). There's also Israel, increasingly Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey.

What RSA should have done is simply own low level market, and compete for items in the mid-level market. Even here RSA is failing to China, UAE, Israel and Turkey. Even countries like Pakistan, Sudan, Ethiopia and Nigeria are now beginning to bite off from the low level market.
Few South African components are imported from abroad.

Your opinion on what we "should have" done is irrelevant.

Also, we can and do compete - or did you miss the 300 ingwe missiles sold to Iraq? 700 Ingwe to Algeria?

Henry240:
Dude, let's us not throw emotions around. The SA defence industry dates back to World War II, Africaken254 shared a video supporting this. So, 20th position when countries that have a defence industry is so small. 20th position is not great.

RSA is only ahead of Azerbaijian and Kazhkstan that's nothing to be proud of.

The MRAP market which you used to control is out of your hands, The US, Europe, Turkey, China, Russia and Australia are now producing better MRAP vehicles. Look at Kenya, a country that used to buy South-African MRAPs, suddenly has moved over to Chinese MRAPs. You can't tell me no bank in RSA can fund 25 vehicles, that's not possible.

Turkey is selling MRAP vehicles to Africans, even Streit from Canada is selling MRAP vehicles to African countries.

One would think that with the draw down in Iraq, RSA companies would begin to look at LAVs, however in this area, you are horrendously failing, Israeli companies have taken over. I mean, look at the Senegalese deployment in Gambia, all the LAVs used are from Israel. The Israelis are selling to Chad, Cameroun, Ethiopia, Zambia, Uganda. The Chinese, Turks and UAE are selling, where are SA companies, simply no where to be found.

In the Drones/UAV market, the Israelis and Chinese, increasingly the UAE have taken over. This bus has left, where is RSA?

The Paramount airplane, Mwari is coming into a market that is looking increasingly tight.

Also, we need to watch out for India, if India comes in, then it would be obvious that the problems of the RSA industry would only grow worse.

Denel is a big company, it deserves it's 100th place, but let's not forget that for so many years it was making losses and had to be bailed out by the government.
So apart from saying exactly what I said, what are you talking about?

Denel is making a profit, we average sales of 300+ armored vehicles per year, hundreds of missiles to multiple sources, artillery systems to multiple sources as well as optics, comms etc and sales are stable. Saying that stuff about Azerbajan and Kazhkstan only demonstrates your lack of knowledge about their domestic capabilities.

Face it, you like what he says because he is highly critical of RSA and that makes the chip on your shoulder happy

wow. You must hate the guy.
I am a pragmatist. I have no political beliefs, I subscribe to no ideologies. I only care about what works and what doesn't, usually history and common sense provide all the answers.

Thus people like Terry make me sick to my core. They place belief over reality and will bend reality to suit their belief.

Henry240:
To the South Africans, who is Terry Crawford-Browne , he is making alot of sense in the comments section of a Defenceweb topic highlighting the poor sales of SA defence equipment.
Terry C-B is a ideologue, his brain is wired the same way as a religious fundamentalist. He is irrational and unreasonable.

He is a pacifist and (worst of all) a LEFTIST that believes that South Africa should disband the SANDF completely and exist like the collection of failed states in South America that do not have militaries (Haiti, Guatemala etc)

He is the guy behind the Arms deal enquiry and the various attempts to uncover corruption. While I respect and applaud his efforts, his inability to leave the issue alone after the Constitutional Court (very politely) told him to Fvck off illistrates my first point - he is irrational, a fanatic.

His assessment as to our Military Industrial Complex is ridiculously biased and based on ideology as apposed to fact.

Mattys Jacobs has provided a more balanced and reasonable explanation that revolves around market forces and structural problems within our militiary-industrial complex.

Basically,

- we dont have any banks that will finance our sales to other countries hence we can only sell big orders to people who "buy cash", which is a tiny market.
- This problem is magnified by an underfunded SANDF who do not give out the consistent orders on top-shelf Denel products, which means that Denel cant establish Economies of Scale to bring down unit costs and expand our market
- nor can it fund the R&grin it needs to maintain a large portfolio of products at competitive prices
- meaning that Denel has to increasingly specialise in "mid-shelf" products
- which means that they now compete in a very small and highly competitive market
- which further hurts profits.

But lets be honest here, South Africa remains a Top 20 arms exporter and Denel is still in the top 100 biggest defense firms in the world, I would hardly call sales "poor".

Its just that we arent reaching full potential.

There was an Intervention in Libya because Nigeria and the AU was in support military action in the country. You cannot roll over an AU that supported action.

Dude, I'm telling you, if there was outside influence in a forced regime change in Zimbabwe, Nigeria would retaliate. This is not even something we would beat around the bush over.

SADC cannot call for sanctions because the regional body doesn't have the political influence to do so in Zimbabwe.
"Because I say so"

It would be none of Nigerias buisness. Stay in your lane.

Henry240:
Nigeria would not allow a military intervention in Zimbabwe. Even if the DA wins. If it ever happens, it would lead to a major diplomatic row, which both South-Africa and Nigeria cannot afford.
Nigeria and the AU would be irrelevant.

It would be a SADAC and UN issue.

However, this is all irrelevant. We could flick a switch and Zimbabwe would go dark and if we close our border crossings the country would suffer massive economic harm, deport Zimbabweans from RSA and their population grows by 20% in a couple of months.

Maputo does not have the capacity to handle all of their imports, they dont have the capacity to keep their national grid running and they will run out of food in months - in part because of sanctions, in part because of population explosion.

We would be well within our rights RE: International Law.

The South African government, with the support of Botswana and either Zambia or Angola could effect regime change via siege. If Mozambique agrees it could be done in months.

Just because we dont swing a big stick doesnt mean we dont have a cupboard full of them.

Irrespective of the very visible shortcomings of Mugabe, Africans across the continent still adore him. He belongs to the Old Guard who fought the British and colonialists.

For this reason, a Gambia like intervention is unlikely. A power sharing deal is more like it.

Mugabe should have stepped down though.
Thats the problem with Africa

He tanked his country, utterly destroyed it.

But everyone puts him on a pedestal for what "he" did during the Bush War.... The irony being that "he" did allmost nothing, it was the people of Zimbabwe who fought, and it is them that we must be loyal to.

22 Squadron of the SAAF has performed superbly so far in the current fire season down in the Cape. Some highlights:

1) flown 94 fire-fighting hours in 11 days;
2) dropped 1,389 buckets of water from the 2.5 ton Bambi Buckets from a pair of Oryx;
3) this amounts to 2,8 million litres of water;
4) the air crews alternated 6-hour shifts, whilst fitting in their day-to-day currency and training with the squadron still on its normal 24/7 standby service;
5) the ground crews shortened their maintenance cycle from a few days to 24 hours, whilst providing day-long fuel bowser services on site;
6) all this whilst 12 members of the squadron are embarked aboard SAS Amatola with a Super Lynx heli on a 3-month voyage to Europe, and a crew currently in the DRC with the FIB.

All that mountain training is really paying off.
I hope Municipal and Provincial governemnt will be compensating SAAF for the sorties... otherwise I suspect that their budget is going to be pretty wrecked.

I see no embarrassment there if the American DDG 1000, British type 45 destroyer,can break down who the hell is iran
Henry240:
It's nevertheless an embarrassment, but you have made a very good argument. It was an embarrassment for the Americans and British also.
Not really though.

DDG 1000 and Type 45 are both realativly new. Thats why they have the deployments they have (very tough, but close to home)... to shake the ships down and make sure everything works.

The American LCS break-down, however, was embarrassing... because that was not a shake-down deployment, it was an active deployment.

I have to correct you here, ONLY special forces are called commando's these day's, The Commando system you are talking about is a whole other thing all together.

Up till 94 Special force regiments were called Commandos, exmp: 4 reconnaissance commando which is now called 4 special forces regiment.
Either way, the term Commando would be incorrect.

Frankly, there is only one set of Commandos who still exist and they are in the service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

And they only just slip into the ambit of "SOF"
