I recently found these photos of what appears to be a Ratel with a very unusual gun-turret. Looks to be much larger than a 90mm, perhaps a 100mm or 105mm? Any relation to the iklwa?
As I have not seen this variant before I was wondering if some of you Saffer okes could shed some light on it. Apologies if it's been posted before.
I assume it's an export model by Denel or something, as the crew posing next to it in the second picture don't appear to be wearing SANDF uniforms.
Turret is the Cockrill system from belgium
Same basic low pressure 90mm upgraded to 90mm high pressure, upgraded everything else
Fresh of the heels from deployment to India for IBSAMAR, the SA Navy is sending a Frigate off to Germany for Exercise Good Hope VII.
- SAS Amatola is scheduled to depart Naval Base Simon’s Town on 16 January - She is expected to arrive in Rota, Spain, on 2 February to refuel. - On 4 February the ship will sail to Plymouth, England, to arrive on 8 February. - SAS Amatola will participate in British Operational Sea Training (BOST) whilst in England from 8 to 18 February and then proceed to Portsmouth to arrive on 19 February.
BOST as "demanding but rewarding,” combining surveys of the physical condition of the ship with tests of the crew's readiness for deployment, including a warfighting and damage control scenario. The objective is to ensure the ship is at the right level of operational capability to progress to multinational, task group training. This is not the first time Amatola has participated in the RN BOST work-up inspection, as she was the first South African ship to do so when she underwent the same rigorous exercise in 2007.
- On 21 February the vessel will commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the SS Mendi - On completion of the commemoration, Amatola will proceed to Kiel, Germany for Exercise Good Hope VII - Exercise Good Hope will take place from 27 February to 5 March. - On completion of the exercise the ship will do a historic visit to Rostock (previously part of East Germany) before sailing back to Rota in Spain to refuel between 19 and 21 March.
The South African National Defence Force said that from Spain the SAS Amatola will visit: --> Tema, Ghana, between 30 March and 3 April --> Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, between 6 and 8 April --> Luanda, Angola, between 11 and 13 April; --> Walvis Bay, Namibia, between 17 and 19 April.
Good oppertunity for some northerners to pay her a visit if she swings by your country
Henry240: I kinda agree with you. We have at least 450 tracked AFV/APC that are due for a replacement . An up armoured vehicle like the warrior would be a great replacement.
My preference for a wheeled vehicle is because I don't think Proforce has shown the capacity to build a tracked vehicle.
Marder 1's are also available from Germany
They will have less wear and tare than the British Warrior
Nok234: Im ok with you but this is down on my list
1. Nigeria is taking here place as the real GIANT OF AFRICA 2. No french or western countries in African affairs 3. we are taking our futur in our hands 4. Jammeh is single minded and Gambia deserv to go forward
chkil: some culture off topic .... north african maghreb celebrate today Yennayer, Berber New Year 2967 in berber calendar ! 12 january linked to the enthronement as pharaoh of the Amazigh berber king "Shoshenq I" after defeating "Ramses III " [believed to have happened in 950 BC]"
and we have snow start fall in algeria from yesterday to celebrate this yennayer
Yoh, Berbers are lazy... your new year is 12 days late!
BlackBaron: The interesting thing about this is if it is successful, Nigerian Air Force would be only the second airwing in the world to have privately built an aircraft on its own. The other is Pakistan.
iblawi: UN peacekeeping mission is not a war. Rooivalk are used mainly as escort. Thugs looking For UN food is what you claim to be fighting with Rooivalk?
kabe1: Dude, anybody can edit Wikipedia. Even a not so smart individual like yourself.
Like i stated previously, your comments make no sense. With the KA-50 and MI-28, yet Russian Aerospace Forces (VAKS) continue to buy additional MI-35M's. Both the KA-50 and MI-28 were developed for a number of reasons, all of them are attack helicopters.
Iraqi columns getting wrecked in Mosul by VBIEDS - it seems the Iraqi's have never heard of the First Chechen war (or the battle for Grozny). Either way, very difficult threat to counter.
iblawi: The MI-28 and KA-50 are not in the same league with Rooivalk.
We can only compare Rooivalk with MI-35 which have different variant
Which is exactly what I said
iblawi: The Rooivalk have old avionics, they are expensive and the French are not giving any guarantee for the key spares which are not even produced in South Africa. These are the reasons why no one is interested in Rooivalk. Even the SAAF is playing safe and it's not just about the money.
Rooivalk uses the same engine and drive components as the Oryx, logistics are not a concern.
Rooivalk has better performance characteristics than the Mi35M/E, can do NOE flight and can operate out of the most basic of airstrips (or the bush if need be). In the vast african battle space, going further faster is a game changer, while due to our continents lack of development the ability to operate with very little in terms of infrastructure is an excellent advantage. Rooivalk also has a bigger weapons payload, so there is that too.
As for avionics, they both have the same sort of equipment, self protection, day-night operation, GPS etc etc etc so any further comparison would have to be extremely technical and would require acess to information that I dont think anyone here has, except for Frum who is no doubt hording it like Jew-Gold under his bed.
kabe1: Nice vehicles, but your project Biro is taking too long to actualise. Are we going to see any by 2020 at all.
Financial problems mate... the whole Government is cutting spending and during peace-time Defence allways gets hit the worst (unless you are Botswana).
The first ship will be ready within 18 months of the contract being signed.
bidexiii: If it's not made in Russia then the other replica are just joke......
What about the war-head/rockets; that's what makes the RPG deadly. There various rockets for different purpose & use made by Russians that are more devastating like the "vampire" that has caused serious loss of the makeva MBT during the Second Lebanon War with Hezbollah in 2006.Tel-Aviv confirmed the loss of eight Merkava tanks. The Vampire is now actively being used in Syria by both armies.
Don't also forget the PG-7VP, has a tandem charge; the first acts as a decoy for the tank’s reactive armour, while the second punches through the armour and also the thermobaric rounds.
The RPG 7 is a product design of the 80's and it's still a treat to any modern MBT till date. So why compare it with something recent.
My dude...
You are talking about the RPG-29 not the RPG-7
American version fires all known RPG-7 warheads dating back to the originals from the 1960's.
RPG-7 is hardly a threat to modern MBT's unless you get a shot onto the top of the tank where the least armor is.
RPG-7 is now generally used as Anti-infantry/light armor/fortification fire support and not a anti-tank, unless you are facing off against very old tanks.
andrewza: Just to put this out there. The tank losses in Syria have nothing to do with the tank and every thing to do with the crew and the infantry and the officers in charge. Tanks fighting in cities with out a infantry screen to escort it will lead to there deaths.
Tank losses maybe not, but casualty rates among crews has everything to do with the tank.
Remember that AMX Lecerc that got blown up in Yemen? only the driver was killed.
kikuyu1: Imo, this shows the need for a working APS in Western armour.
No it doesnt, Turks have cold-war era Leo's built for tank on tank warfare... not built for providing Area-denial in the middle of a city... the Leo2 PSO was built for that
