Im not a lawyer, but with the exception of attractive ( very subjective), the remaining criteria seems applicable. I would expect that someone applying for the cabing crew job would be presentable. The other criteria could be borne out of safety requirements (ie not be to fat, in case if emergency so as to enable agile movement. I know these requirements are also used in other airlines as collegues wife works for KLM ( mor than 15 years) and actually is on the Abuja-Amsterdam route. Just my 2 cents. Esss: Please any lawyers in the house?! |
Always useful but not a deal killer. BB can be quite easily learned. missdharmie: Thank you very much! Please will my basic knowledge of Reuters and Bloomberg computer application be useful? |
Also dont be afraid to look within independent non banking firms. For example http://chapelhilldenham.com/careers missdharmie: Wow!This is a well of knowledge... Please can I get some career advice. Which of this Institutions offer internship positions. I am a graduate of Economics and an ican student at the moment. Seems the job offers are not coming through. So any place at all where I can get hands on experience? Thanks! |
You could be right as I dont have much info on the nigerian market, THOUGH, I think that it boils down to the fact that the Nigerian Banks are not innovatie enough when it comes to IB. When I see market news concerning Nigeria, 9 out of 10, it concerns the involvement of a foreign investor and to some extent the local, state of federal government. I would think that banks would need to be involved in the process think of : performance bonds, insurance, possibly FX hedging since many foreign banks wont touch NAira forwards etc. So I think that teh IB market is still in its baby shoes in Nigeria but banks need to be more proactive. alex jelvis: I do believe there isn't any Investment banking activities in Nigeria at the moment because the Nigeria market is too narrow and lack the basic components needed to drive investment banking activities such as hedge fund, Derivative trading, portfolio construction , balancing and asset allocation et.al. |
As I mentioned, my knowledge of the African job market/institutions are lacking sorry. If it concerns the US or EUR market I can send you info on that as seminars, and summer internships which is VERY VERY ( did I mention VERY) good way of getting your foot in the door. If you get a summer intern, be the first in and the last to leave, be inquisitive and take on all tasks. Believe me those are the ones that leave an impression and are not forgotten when we look for new intakes. missdharmie: Wow!This is a well of knowledge... Please can I get some career advice. Which of this Institutions offer internship positions. I am a graduate of Economics and an ican student at the moment. Seems the job offers are not coming through. How does the saying go again, you can lead a horse to the stream but you cant make it drink. Thats a tough one since to be honest this is not cut out for everyone. Even those that choose banking may not like or want a career in IB and at times I dont blame them. As I mentioned before its about grasping concepts quickly, relationship management etc. You also share in the success of large corps and their development. There is a kick, at least for me to see on the news a transcation come through that you have been working on. You also meet people you would not have met otherwise (I met the head of TATA steel and his son during a transaction some years back). Also the pay is good, but that shouldnt be the driving force, though to my dismay, many are in it for that.
U guys r GOOD!I've bin seekin 2 knw more abt IB and hw 2 get cos I wud really lyk my yonger sis 2 pursue a career in dis direction. But d issue is tryin 2 get her see things in dis light. She's currently in her 1st yr as an undergraduate of Banking n Finance. Though I've nt discussed dis wit her, my fear being dt I wudnt want 2 b d 1 "pushing" her in2 it and wudnt also want her 2 accuse me of causing her "woes" (if any, in d future). As for her MBA, God willing, dt shud nt b a problem 2 handle. I jst want advice on hw 2 go abt gettin her 2 buy into d idea of a career in IB witout her seeing it dt I'm tryn 2 force her into it. Once she WILLINGLY decides 2, den evry other tips dat have been dropped here, I can talkover wit her. Thanx y'all 4 ur anticipated replies.
|
My pleasure. On the schools, I heard that LBS ( Lagos) is very good actually. Im not to knowledable of schools on the African continent. As for outside, they can be found via Global Rankings. Now there is a lot of polictics in these rankings as salary base is one of the important factors, but you cant go wrong. I have attached it for you. Most banks will look to see where you studied. akin101: thanks man i do appreciate the informative reply........ |
To be honest its a bit more complicated in your situation BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. The thing is with IB you always start at the bottom no matter your pedigree. Harvard grad 4.0, dude you will be making presentations and doing analytical work the coming monts/years supporting the VPs/directors/MDs. Hence they want young blood, but in your case you have an engineering degree so you are valuable ( depending on the type or eng degree of course) in that you understand certain aspects of the business model much better simpluy because its your field. My advice would be: try and get an MBA from a reputable school, when I say reputable I mean one where you will LEARN something and not just BUY yr MBA. Then try to get into Portfolio Management/credit management on say the Integrtated Energy side. Also a nice option, which seems boring but has been proven to work is to go thru Risk. Most ppl dont like Risk, mostly desk work, not client facing and not always liked by us FO, because you keep telling us what we CANT DO (toungue in cheek). The thing is that you will be able to see a lot of structures and be able to understand how funds are structured and obtained (syndicated market, cap raising etc) and then you will be be very valuable in a move towards IB. Most likely you wont have to start at associate but possibly Associate Director or such. Just my thoughts, others feel free to chime in. akin101: I ve always had an interest in investment banking......though i m an old experienced hand in another field entirely (engineering) |
Ah where would we be without Liars Poker.....Big Swinging D..ks...still holds true.... Ijebulogic: 6. To really understand the world of investment banking - read "Liars Poker". Its not an academic book, but every investment banking colleague i had in the UK had a copy on their desk. Good luck. |
You are spot on then my friend. It has its perks dont get me wrong and the pay is very good, but its not for the lame hearted. Actualy it never was. I can tell you that I NEVER do 8 hours days NEVER, approx 50/60 hrrs a week and while on leave or vacation business is still going. Luckily fam and most importantly, wife undersstands. If you cant stand the heat, not a nice place. Competition is killing and the motto is WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY, meaning last years targets dont count. AjanleKoko: I was referring to the 'fad', not the profession itself. Investment banking can't die, for obvious reasons. |
Here is my two cents worth. Im an investmeent banker based in EU (mainly Amsterdam, London and Luxembourg). I have been in banking since 1993. The field of IB is very vast and actually ther is no ONE EXPERTISE of IB. Also, what section you work, back office, Mid Office or Front Office (client facing) varies. I think that the main thing believe it or not is the ability to understand concepts and issues quickly as well as manage relationships. Certificates and diplomas are nice, but I have seen MDs who had degrees in Art History beleive it or not. Dont get me wrong a basic understanding of economics helpsm but its an on the job learning process that can be depicted or described in text books. Also what some mentioned on internshipo so very true. This is still one of the best ways to get in and IB has a high bar when it comes to get a job in it. As for whether the field is dead, I would say not as its needed, how else will corps be able to fund and as long as we have billion dollar/Euro corps we will have IB, though more tightly regulated and less free market flexibilty. Hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try and answer what I know. |
In typical Nigerian manner a problem has been brought to light and guess what we have succeeded to make it tribal. The caption is NIGERIANS in Jail, what they did is of little importance, why they are doing it is the main issue. I saw IBO names in the beginning and I saw Yoruba names on a later list. Is that important? Come on. How can you look at that Yoruba mother shedding tears, did that not move you? Is she not someones mother. How can you see these IBO ladies and not feel pain in your heart, dont you have sisters. As for me I dont place the blame on Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa but the situation that past and present leaders have created. Though even in a developed society, you will have these issues, our situation is one that embelishes crime no matter how you get it. We live in a society that known drug dealers can come to Nigeria and be hailed whereas everyone knows what he is doing. Many of these officials look to well kept on their meager salaries to me. And folks thats the issue, In Nigeria as long as you DONT GET CAUGHT all is well. Its a pity that we dont realise that this behaviour has consequences. That in our surge to get rich at all costs, this diesease has invested our people. That the government that is supposed to provide an infrastructure to succeed, is there to cheat ist own people. What is the difference bewteen what these men have committed and past rulers. WE ALL KNOW THAT EVERY PAST REGIME HAS STOLEN MONEY, yet we praise them, place their faces on notes, have them as key speakers and give them honurary titles. The other day I say the most stupid comment, ppl on NL were comparing how beautiful a past rulers mansion was, WITH OUR STOLEN MONEY!!!! So why blame these men that are doing the same thing. Their only offense is that they dont have big men backing them, werent able to amas millions and last but not least THEY GOT CAUGHT. Some ppl commenting here would be fighting to sit with any of them if they saw them at a VIP table at a club. Our stupidty is sometimes EPIC. |
O yeah by the way, Mr Lewis WAS caught with stmulants in Seoul, but claimed it was in his tea O At the time the banned substance was on the list so he was guilty, but they argued his case and guess what it was removed years later from the list so that it wouldnt tarnish his legacy. What a fraud. |
Let me say that NOBODY knows if Bolt is cheating or not. His body doesnt resemble one on anabolic steroids which is what he would be taking as he does sprints, unlike what the distance runner or bikers in like the tour de france would need (oxygen induced assistance). He is not very muscled. I personally think he is freak of nature. At that height, with that kind of coordination, pure physics would confirm the fact that he is winning. The thing is that we have never seen someone that tall with such coordination. What I find funny are the accusations coming from Carl Lewis. I guy I USED TO, I say USED To have in high regard until the last couple of years. Reason is that there was a documentary shown some years back ( IM sure you can see it on youtube) where the US Olympic committee more or less rigged the 1984 games. It turned out that since they were holding the games and the previous one held in Moscow had been a drug induced fiasco, they didnt want to be shamed and wanted to make sure their guys werent cheating. Guess what, what they found out scared them, many of them were cheating, so they actually stopped the test. The reason was simple, the tests they had back then could not detect the TYPE of enhancement drug, BUT could see that one was cheating based on the amount of water in ones urine. It would have been hard to press charges since athletes could ask, OK if Im cheating, what drug am I using. So they abandoned it. Many year later, when the testing was better they went back to the monsters they had and guess what.... and I quote the gentlemen... WE SIMPLY STOPPED BECAUSE EVERY VIAL WE PICKED UP MORE OR LESS CAME UP POSTITIVE. The US in typical arrogant form feel that they are the only ones that DESERVE TO WIN and when they lose then the other team MUST HAVE CHEATED. Let me give you some food for thought. Florence Griffith Joyner (RIP) died at 38 in her sleep. Her records set in 1984 still stand today, 28 years later! Even the convicted drug user Marion Jones couldn’t touch her records. Her record of 10.49 for the 100m will probably never be broken. Why is the US not talking about that? It was obvious to everyone back then she was on something, but hey she was wearing the read white and blue so no issue. Even when she died, the wanted to test for steroid and the coroner said there wasn’t enough urine in her bladder at her death or testing available to make it reliable. Even Carl Lewis thats talking exhibited characteristics of one taking steroids. He used braces back then (jaw line grows out of whack and the teeth get screwed up) which is very common for steroid users. Let me remind you to have a look at his pictures back when he competed. He had a bad case of acne also common for drug users. When they interviewed Ben Johnson on why he used it, his exact words were cus everyone was including the elite athletes and everyone knew. Now go and have a look at the number of banned athletes in history in all sports and guess who takes the GOLD MEDAL. Hypocrits. And the reason...................MONEY! Thats what this is all about. Usain Bolts wins guarantees him USD 20MM this year alone in endorsements. With that kind of money going around, you know you will have cheaters. I say until its proven, F.. Off. When Jamaica was taking second in track events I didn’t see the US complain. Usain competes in events all over the world so he will get tested. Usain beat the US so go and sleep and Jamaica swept the 200 so go and train harder and stop being a sore loser. |
YAOUNDE (Reuters) - Seven Cameroon athletes have disappeared while in Britain for the London Olympics, the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education said on Monday evening.http://sports.yahoo.com/news/seven-cameroon-athletes-missing-110151443--box.html WHATS YOUR TAKE ON THIS? |
I dont care who is to blame or what party or what local government. This is mortal shame and Nigerians owe these upcoming childern an apology for not giving to them what other kids in develpoed countries receive. Its the least we could do. Before some fool starts to rant that we are not developed or shouldnt compare ourselves to developed countries, I wish to remind you that these pics are in the same country that senators get paid more then the US president. We (YOU AND I) should be ashamed. |
I fully understand the outrage as one would think that such a qualification would yield a better job, BUT, note that this happens EVERYHWERE and is based on pure economics. Where there is HIGH unemployment, employers may and will ask for the best qualifications. It happens in the US and in Europe as I have witnessed both. I remember when y2k was a big issue and employers couldnt find anyone they were taking High School grads and training them. if you go to Spain, you will see ( and Im talking from actually seeing this) University grads applying for cleaning jobs. If you were sick and had the resources to choose any doctor, would you not choose the very best qualified. Its economics folks. See the bright side, at least they will get employed and be honest the level of intelect will also rise, which is what I think Dangote is also trying to achieve within his company. |
Thats Cute for real ![]() greatgod2012: this thread is interesting sha. |
berem: GBAGAUN!! Mrs retardinho grammar school!!All those that enrol to get free books and umbuulelaas. |
Come on people lets use our intelligence. Believe me they are aware of the fact that the Gov is not a shareholder etc, I think they wanted to draw attention to what was going on and create awareness. You see we Nigerians always complain that its better overseas and that other countries are develeoped, BUT this is part of development, take my word. If the banks choose to lay off wordkers, there must be an agreed payment settlement done cordially. Thats how its done in developed countries. They could pay them say 1/2 a months salary for every year worked. So someone who worked 20 years could get 10 months paid. Keep in mind that they contributed to the financial well being of the bank. What if those same workers decided to stop working without warning? Would the banks be happy. We dont have an unemployment scheme to cater for these people. Keep in mind that they will not contribute to the economy as they are no longer able to sepnd. This trickles down the chain. Keep the Big Picture in mind and think outside of the box as well as outside of your little world. They can be your brother or sister or even you down the line. My brothers and sisters, note that how we treat our citizens internally says something about us in terms of development as a nation. |
These plans are good and laudable. Nigerians are not stupid people, we have brains, BUT....our problem has ALWAYS been GOVERNANCE. A game without rules is no longer a game and then even when we know the rules we appoint a REFEREE. This is exactly our problem, NO rule, No Referee. So now that I have looked in my magic ball (actually you don’t need one to predict this, we all know what will happen) let me tell you what I see.......... Fake clinics popping up every where with so called attendance and false list of pregnant women. This is just another ploy so that someone can defraud. |
Its a fact Just got word from a friend living in Abuja that he just cruised down UMBUU LELA Crescent. ![]() |
This absolutley had me rotfl. I agree, a promise is a promise. This just goes to show in no circumstamce should you trust a Nigerian. I mean if you cant trust a hostage who can you trust nowadays.
Lmao!! Check this out I dare say. . .Obodo's kidnappers may have a case after all!!
|
This was a Subliminal . tpapi: where did u get ur fake story from |
I supsect that the Police will also RESCUE the ransome money too. ![]() Keneking: So was the money paid thereafter? |
Dont wanna spark coontroversy with those saying we should give credit where credit is due, but the following excerpt is different from what Chris is saying: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/10/christian-obodo-freed-nigeria-lecce_n_1585235.html Delta state police spokesman Charles Muka said officers freed Obodo and arrested several of his suspected kidnappers, who had not even left the oil-producing state where he was abducted on Saturday. Muka declined to say what led police to the kidnappers. Police and security agencies in Nigeria have traced suspects using their mobile phone transmissions in the past. Wait hold up, I thought he ran. How can you free someone when he ran away. |
Friend take time, were you there, answer me were you there? They said they rescued him (AFTER) he escaped. the just forgot to mention after. No biggie. 2mch: Naija police exposed! Chai! what do they gain from this incessant lies? Are they trying to rebrand their image? At least this victim is alive to say the truth. Make them begin to become truthful and accountable. |
I bet he was thankful he took part in the sprint exersizes during training. You see, you never know when things come in handy. On a serious note, Im thankful for your life. |
So you mean the story I heard about Police SWAT cars and shoot outs, dodging of bullets, rolling on the ground while illuding danger was all lies. What about the fact that they fought off 50 or so guys was not true. Hmmm. I dont know who to believe, CO or the cops. Its such a noble bunch. ![]() |
Im sorry to say this is not a trend but something that has always existed. For some it plays a major role, less for others while non existant for some. Its the unspoken truth/shame that we dare not talk about, that in my humble opinion was ignited in our minds by those that should have known better...our leaders. Pick up any book about our history and it wont be long before you read an insinuation from a leader from a region about someone from another region. It doesnt matter what it is. Just a have a look at the last elections. You had these leaders arguing WHICH REGION WOULD RULE. There was talk about an agreement they made to rotate, EXCUSE ME? Why rotate? Shouldnt the most capable man/woman lead us? If you were dying and needed a doctor, would you first ask what tribe/region they came from? NO, you would want the most capable. So if the leaders do it, what do you think it imprints into the minds of the citizens? How were past leaders judged even governors? By how much they did in their home town. SMH. Culture for those who dont know is a learned behaviour, so what a group of people do, to a large extent has been learned over time. Shamefully its something we have been infected with and hadnt noticed the impact it has made on us and the internet has simply maginified it, why because some of the things, that many had wanted to say but couldnt, can no be said behind the cowardly computer. We use code names and no one knows who we are and we state what has been in our hearts all along. I could give many examples of things that I know made me wonder in my mind, if it was not tribal/region motivated. I think the leaders also like it that way, WHY? So we can be smoke screened into the tribal issue and not the real issues at hand and that is the mismangement of our nation. They learned well the DIVIDE AND RULE policy. Hopefully, the thing that brought it to light (Internet) will also open the door to us getting to know each other better. No matter where you come from and we know how it is at times, one thing is true, Nigerians in general have a warm heart towards that nation. Its not all I want it to be, but I wont throw it away. Remember, the truth is there are only TWO type of people......... The have and have nots. Thats a fact. |
Also when you dont have to see the movie cus the damn trailer or intro has just about told you everything. ie The Revenger, he was outcast by his village, suspected of having demonic powers, only to come back to plan his revenge on those who cast him out, see him take revenge, but pay for it with his life later. Watch.............The Revenger! Come on do I really need to? ![]() |
When there is at least one struggle scene with a man and woman and the lady shouts ewaaaaaayyy, kill me now, ehem kill me and the guy: But I loves you darlin please dont talk like dis and then she starts to cry REALLY Dramatically. Thats the pedigree right here. ![]() |
O At the time the banned substance was on the list so he was guilty, but they argued his case and guess what it was removed years later from the list so that it wouldnt tarnish his legacy. What a fraud.
