How To Make Your Stitches Heal Fast After An Episiotomy




An episiotomy, a surgical cut in the perineum – the muscular area between the vagina and the anus – done to create sufficient vaginal opening for baby’s passage, is one of the several rigours often experienced by a lot of mums during childbirth.

To enable the subsequent stitches heal as soon as possible and keep the discomfort to the barest minimum, see top things you should do…

1. While taking a bath or shower daily, wash your stitches gently with soap and warm water.

2. Ask your doctor about sitz baths (sitting in a bathtub and covering the buttocks up to the hips in water for 20 minutes). Use cool water for the first few days, then warm water afterwards. Squeeze the cheeks of your bottom together when you sit to avoid pulling painfully on the stitches.

Doing this will help reduce pain, swelling and bruising, making for quicker healing.

3. Use a squirt bottle with warm water to clean the area whenever you use the toilet and pat dry with a clean washcloth. You may also pour warm water over your vagina while urinating to curb the usual stinging or burning sensation that may make you want to scratch.

Wipe from front to back after bowel movements to prevent transferring bacteria from your anus to the cut or its surroundings.

4. Place a clean pad around the cut and press gently as you poo to help relieve pressure on the cut.

5. Change your sanitary pad regularly and ensure you wash your hands before and after to prevent infection.

6. Try to expose your stitches to fresh air frequently as this also aids healing and minimizes the urge to scratch. You may take your underwear off for 10 minutes twice a day or more and lie on your bed, putting a clean towel under you to avoid staining your bed spread.

Wear loose clothing always to ensure proper air circulation to the area.

7. Place ice packs wrapped in a clean towel on your stitches for 10 – 20 minutes to reduce pain and swelling. You may repeat every two hours.

8. To reduce pain and pressure on your wound, place a doughnut-shaped cushion beneath you while sitting or squeeze your buttocks together.

9. Do Kegel exercises regularly by tightening and then relaxing your vaginal muscles (see more here). This improves circulation to the perineum, facilitates healing and curbs leaking from the bladder or bowel.

Walking may also boost blood circulation in your perineum and foster speedy healing.

10. Drink lots of water and eat fibre-rich foods daily. This will help prevent constipation, so you can have easier bowel movements without straining your stitches. In addition, if you experience constipation, ask your doctor about taking laxatives.

11. Talk to your doctor about taking an anti-inflammatory drug to help with the pain and swelling.

Depending on the size of your cut and other factors, healing should take place between two to four weeks postpartum, and you should stop experiencing any pain after 2 months.

Meanwhile, you should see your doctor if you experience pain around your perineum, discharge large blood clots, your stitches become more painful or smelly – this may be a sign you have an infection, or your sanitary pad is always soaked with lochia or blood. You should also discuss other symptoms you’re worried about to get prompt help.

You will not cast ur young IJN. Your baby is intact, just have faith, nothing will happen to ur baby. E hugs to u.

So i woke up today at 5am n wat i saw was blood,i took my bath wore a pad n waited till past 6 b4 goin to d hospital.doctor says is a case of threaten abortion n ask me to go for scan.d sonographer was not around so a random doctor who claim to knw how to do scan did it for me and says it is showing no evidence of pregnancy so i had to go for another test which came out positive.they hv to keep me in other to monitor me since d blood is still coming out.

Sometyms wen the baby weight is small,it pushes your edd forward,and wen the weight is more it brings it back like in your case.

I will suggest you stick to your LMP,and also have it in mind that baby will come when he/she is ready

To me I don't think the weight is too much cos I don't even like big babies,BUT you have to start reducing your carbohydrate intake that is if you have not started already cos it is at this time babies add weight,but in all people still birth 4.5 kg babies so I believe you

The size of your baby caused the date to move back as it indicates your baby is bigger than the estimated foetal weight of a 36 weeks old hence the 38 weeks reading.

The size by all means indicates you may have a big baby but then scans have proved several times to be inaccurate, just be prepared cos your baby may come before you lmp edd

Good morning all in the hauz, abeg my dea sabi mamas I don show again o, make una helep me Chuk mouth for this iss. Just did my 3rd scan today, and my baby's weight is 3.4 @36wks +3days,(frm LMP. Cal) tho the scan result said it's 38weeks+2days, therefor shifting my EDD backwards by 2 weeks to August, pls my questions are as follows
1. Is the weight of my lo too much @ the stated weeks? Weather 36 or 38.
2. Also which EDD shud I go for? Was thinking the scan EDD will even increase and not decrease by 2wks like it did.

Wen I press mine, I see yellowish kind of liquid come out, believe that is the colostrum. I have been cleaning with water, will try the olive oil too. As for my tips, they are out already, lol. Just pray th milk will flow without stress or taking concoction of Palm wine n stout etc. Thanks dea @sugah . U be real cappo, u've always got my back... *hugs

I actually plan to ask my doctor that question at my next doctors visit... although mamas here said to clean with olive oil and cotton wool, my matron in Naija said to just clean with water when you are bathing. But considering that I haven't seen any milk or liquid come out of my nipples even with pressing, im a bit worried hence my decision to ask my doctor.

Peggygee you clean with cotton wool dipped in olive oil! It helps remove dirt that clogs the milk ducts.

Is it true that one is supposed to start cleaning my nipple with spirit abi wetin so that the milk will flow freely after birth. Biko is this true? Is there any magic one can do for free flow of milk frm now?

what drugs were u given for the malaria and how many weeks were u? is it safe to treat malaria at 38weeks? I want to complain at my next ANC.

No Oooo, we were told to stop taking malaria medicine in my ANC frm 7mnths o. Pls dnt take it oooo

Team September mamas how's d waddling going? Jst of recent I noticed that my normal complexion is returning back, am no longer dark as I was some months ago, av been receiving diff compliments from pop abt did my returned beauty, abeg shey na only me deh experience dis?

And d constipation I experienced in first trimester has returned back o, av done all d needfuls Na still same same so na God hand I deh now.

Part 3

I was on the floor while the blood keep pumping out, mum and DH were confused. We used tissue,pad,wrappers etc putting pressure to stop the bleeding. DH woke our neighbours while mum pack something for baby. They called the Dr of the nearest private hospital and he was in. Luckily he is a gynecologist and was even part of my delivery team. They were waiting at our arrival. DH carried me to the car with help of another man. I was wheeled straight to theatre on arrival,bleeding was controlled and another mva done. The blood clot that came out was almost as large as 200naira tissue roll. More retain placenta was removed. I was stitched again of tears that was neglected and those that reopened. I had to do anoda scan to confirm that the place is clear. That was another lesson,I was supposed to do a scan after the first mva.
It's over a week now and I'm gradually recovering after losing a lot of blood. Milk flow is still a work in progress. I sincerely thank God for my life and I hope my story will help someone out there. There are no two mothers ou there,God pls help we mothers to live and raise our children in Jesus name. Amen

Wow! Wat an amazing story, I dnt knw why some Dr's. Dnt take things seriously, see what their negligence caused. Thank God for ur life. May God protect all mothers, those who have offloaded n those yet to offload. Amen

Abeg we are 35wks today, do I need to wait till 37 weeks b4 I s. tart taking the tea, Cox even tho I can't wait to meet my Lo, I want him to get to full term (37wks), secondly, is it all the teas u listed that is shud take @ once, Mbok help a sister.

Biko I didn't port from July.I wanted to port from August to July as my EDD was Aug 2, and Aug 4. but my doctor refused o. And I got the teas from Wal-Mart store.

Abeg Google the teas o. Cos by 35 weeks I was so tired of being pregnant and was ready to do anything.

I think those teas helped. Cos I dilated so fast d nurses kept asking me what I did and trust naija in me, I just tell them nothing o, na God.

Hope our bags are packed ooo cos most of us would port to August. From 37 weeks baby is already full term so they might make their grand entrance anytime, lets be prepared.

Feel free to ask what any abbreviation you see here means jooor. We are open to learning. Moniker means your account name on Nairaland.For example, your own moniker is peggygee . My own is Britneystacy.You see words like kpekus here too meaning to have sex with DH....can't remember other coded words now but any you see and you don't understand, just ask. So you will flow better.

Some people prefer savlon to Dettol because they feel it's milder on LO 's skin and some clinics include it in their list too for baby. My own clinic included Dettol sha. So it depends....dettol or Savlon is ok. You may want to use that which is in your hospital list.

Those tiny ones can be very sweet inside soup. I wish I can see them to eat. You use lime to wash it, I ve forgotten the name of that white thing you can also use in washing it. You can try it, you may like it.

It's called Alum, u can also use garri, dry one to wash it. I use either of them.
