Agriculture / Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by PENMIGHT(m): 2:36pm On Jul 14, 2014
Hi everyone!
I was opportuned to read through the posts on this thread before the "holocaust" and that was the booster I needed for the already fading dream I had. I had always loved to go in the line of poultry.

After seeking God's guidiance as a muslim, I set out on the journey.

In March, I got a 4.5hectares of land at Ibadan. It was about 1.4m. The clearing was done and deforestation completed on time. I was opportuned to have a well already dug on d site. Also, there was a dilapidated structure.
I renovated the structure and erected a tank stanchion with pumping maching installed in the well. A fellow Nairalander (met on this thread) was instrumental to kick-starting. Farmtemple (bolaji) is a great guy. He was around while I was in far away Ikot Abasi (akwa ibom state).
The water was running and the house served as a temporary storage house.
I am an architect, so I did an overall layout design of how the place will be in years to come, in shaa Allaah.

I scooped sand on site and moulded my blocks, cured to d required strenght.

I procured wood , used asbestos and other necessary materials. Construction commenced.
Because of my absence , the work wasnt completef as scheduled. It took nearly more than 2months to achieve. Understandably though, the farm is not also d best in terms of accessibility. It slowed down d pace of work.

Fast forward to May, I dug another borehole (I wanted to place safe with d water requirements).

I was more than eager to get my birds but I had a friend who was keenly regulating my zeal so as not to do things too much in a hurry. He kept telling me...."be calm, there is still more to be done". He was very right.

Now, I was on ground and despite my proactiveness, we were busy preparing for arrival of the birds for more than a month.
I booked for 4, 200 layers and 200 cockerel. It was from CHI. We were alloted to pick up on June 16, 2014.

I couldnt sleep overnite due to anxiety. Eventually the birds were transported to d farm.

As I write, they are exactly 4 weeks old today. So far, we have mortality of 24nos. That was mainly due to d mistake we made at the point of sorting the birds at CHI.
I took time to sort out the weak ones into a cartorn meant to be replaced. However, the same carton to be replaced was taken inside the hatchery and returned back to us.

Some of the mortality were noticed dt same day as d vet doctor was trying to vaccinate them.

Alhamdulilahi, they are doing fine.
I will send some pics.

Right now, hopefully in a week's time the Feed mill should be up on running with a 1 ton milling machine a 40kva generator.

Please dont ask me how much as been invested so far.....a lot......lo.l

Zakat

Zakat is the compulsory giving of a set proportion of one's wealth to charity. It is regarded as a type of worship and of self-purification.

Zakat is the third Pillar of Islam.Zakat does not refer to charitable gifts given out of kindness or generosity, but to the systematic giving of 2.5% of one's wealth each year to benefit the poor.

The benefits of Zakat, apart from helping the poor, are as follows:
Obeying God-Helping a person acknowledge that everything comes from God on loan and that we do not really own anything ourselves.
And since we cannot take anything with us when we die we need not cling to itAcknowledging that whether we are rich or poor is God's choice. So we should help those he has chosen to make poor.

Learning self-discipline
Freeing oneself from the love of possessions and greed
Freeing oneself from the love of money
Freeing oneself from love of oneself

Behaving honestlyThe 2.5% rate only applies to cash, gold and silver, and commercial items. There are other rates for farm and mining produce, and for animals.

Then a 200L student of Architecture. I was busy with my studio works then inside Awo Mosque. It all started at the Awo Cafe. It was just a flimsy barrier seperating the cafe and Awo mosque. The glasses were shattered but thanks to good reinforced walls of the mosque, no casualty was recorded. As the chaos reigns, i took cover underneath one of those famous Dining Tables of old. It was a long night and a sad day.l

mamdanju: In Islam, there is no disagreement among the scholars over the fact that the insane person is not held responsible for his/her acts as long as he/she has that psychological disorder.
Imaam Ahmad (May Allah have mercy upon him) reported from 'Ali Ibn Abi Taalib may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention) said: "The pen is prevented from writing the deeds of three people (i.e. they are excused by Allaah): a sleeping person till he wakes up, a child till he reaches puberty and an insane person till he can reason".

Mintayo:
pls tell me,why then did allah ask you to do away with dogs?
BTW,did u open the thread i put in my first post?

Allaah did not say do away with dogs. Rather, He said it is prohibited for consumption but you can hunt with it. He said its saliva its najash( impurities) but the scholars of the deen allows the use of its hair and that of boar and pigs into brushes.

It is part of our understanding in Islam that the Angels of mercy will not enter the house in which bells are kept. Also, the house in which pictures are displayed. Also, the house in which a dog is kept without justification as allowed in Shariah.

It is also part of our understanding in Islam that if you are under compulsion( let say your life is solely dependent in it or u are coarsed to eat it lest you loose your life) then eating such at that rime comes under necessity and consuming it at that instances MAY be overlooked as not sinning.
We can argue back and forth about the rationale or otherwise of the prohibition of keeping dog has mete pet but it all bore down to the fact that It is all about the do's' and don't 's' of the Creator of all that exist in the Heavens and Earth and what it contains.

You have to also know that Islam came to abrogate some things initially made lawful to the nations that came before us- the Jews and Christian.

It was in the law of Jesus not to work on the Sabath but this has been overuled just like it was lawful for the Isrealite to eat ALL foods except the one they deliberately abstained from. Q 3 vs 93.

But Islam is an embodiment of all things good from previous generations and discard all the harmful aspect therefrom.

Allah says:

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet whom they will find written with them in the Torah and Injeel( Biblical gospel)- he commands them of righteous deeds and forbids them detestable acts; he allows them all lawful things and prohibits them all unlawful filths, he disengages them from the heavy burden (of previous nations) from the fetters that were upon them. So those who believe in him, honour him, help him ,and folloe the light which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be succesful" Q 7 vs 157.

Mintayo: I believe the real question anyone should ask is,why would allah ask a muslim not to keep dog for whatever reason?
Is it because dogs are dirty?
Didnt allah know that dogs are dirty before he created them?
But are dogs the only dirty animals? What about goats? Sheeps? Rams?
I think there is more to this than just being dirty!
https://www.nairaland.com/1412339/angel-afraid.

Welcome Mintayo!

I agree with you that being "dirty" may not be the reason for this prohibition.

Allah legislates. And at times when He does, he explains the reason behind such laws. But most of the time He doesn't tell us the reasons. But for every law in Islam, there is Wisdom.

Anvaller: OP! OP!! OP!!! How many times did I call u? Please Make Sure that U Read This

Pls listen and listen good, u simply can keep a dog as a Muslim. There is nothing inherently indicative of not keeping a dog in ur home or anywhere even from the hadith that some guys have quoted here just think about God's words and logic. Are u weak on logic? I am fed up of how Muslims just do not have a common sense understanding of their religion. All they do is keep asking ppl as if Islam is a secret that they can't learn by themselves.

If u do not understand what I mean by logic and common sense, I will explain as follows:

1) U have been taught here that u can keep dog as hound dog but not as a pet
(This instruction does not make any sense because anyone's hound dog is that person's pet)

2) Some more lenient instruction here told u that u can keep dog as a pet but only that u don't allow them to touch u, because then u can not pray with the clothes they have touched
(Well this doesn't make sense too because how would u keep an animal like dog as a pet without having contact with it? God knows that fact for sure and he wouldn't put u in an unnecessary predicament)

Now, Lets look at some of the verses in the Quran where God says some things about Dogs?

1) In Suratul Kaf verse 13, God described the Dwellers of the Cave as "good believers" and then further along the line of the narration at verse 18, God tells us that they "The Good Believers" had their Dogs with them.

Analysis- The dwellers of the cave must have been dog lovers and or fanatics as a group of ppl and it must have been that the majority had their dogs with them otherwise, there wouldn't have been any reason for the emphasis "they had their dogs" in the revelation.
If having a dog is even a bit of a problem, prohibited or dirty, how come were the dwellers of the cave "good believers" and they had their dirty dogs?

2) In Surah Al Maidah verse 4, God Almighty categorically permitted us to eat animals that has been hunted down by our dogs
Analysis- A dog runs after a prey, kills it with its mouth, carries it with the same mouth for a distance that may stretch up to a kilometer back home, happily with its mouth watering (salivating) and tail wagging out of excitement.
Now God says u may eat that prey, it is lawful. If a dog is dirty, and they should be avoided because we should not have contact with their mouth or saliva otherwise we are unclean and can not even pray with a cloth they merely touched, How then can we eat a prey killed by the same dirty gog with their unholy mouth full of evil saliva?

3) The Quran contains a very important rule for all believers, and the rule is:

Nothing is haram (unlawful) unless it is prohibited by God Himself, and since God describes the Quran as complete, perfect and fully detailed, thus all the prohibitions decreed by God are found in the Quran.

If I continue with this topic, I may end up writing the volume of a book and its never my intention to do so. So in conclusion, keeping a dog is not prohibited in Islam U MAY KEEP A DOG IF U WANT. The Islamic school of thought that prohibits keeping dogs for Muslims in my opinion are actually committing a sin because God categorically stated that no one has the authority to prohibit what he the Almighty in his infinite mercy has never prohibited for mankind.

U would observe that those who are are telling u to keep off dogs are quoting the Hadith... Well that is where the problem is. Any hadith that contradicts the direction of God's revelation or apparent intent in the Quran is not advisable and u know why? because the instructions in a Hadith can never overwrite the God's revelation in the Quran. It can only agree with it or corroborate it. I have tried my best and now it is left for u to make rational decisions with ur own discretion.

May God Help us all!

and PS! Thanks for reading this long post.

Islam is not Irrational but islam is not justified by rational.
And those who seek to rationalize everything Islam are kindred of Shaitan.

He was asked why he refused to bow to Adam? He said " I am better than him, You created me from fire while You created him(adam) from clay". Thus, his disobedience was premised on pride, arrogance that, material engineering wise, fire is superior to clay. He was a rationalist. And he was lost.

Were Islam to be based on rational, The Messenger would have wiped underneath is feet and not the top.

At the presentation of evidences from Quran and Sunnah fron our Dear Brother Lanrexlan, it beholves us as muslim not to contend a glaring age-long ,textually-backed evidences from the Quran.

Your argument about the people of the Cave and the Ayah of Maidah vs 4 was clearly misinterpreted.

You have not presented any Hadith expalining such Ayahs like that. Neither have you presennted any Tafsir explaining such verses like that. NO KNOWN SCHOLAR AS EVER MIS-INTERPRETED THOSE VERSES LIKE THAT.

In Suratul Bujuj, Allah described an incidence that happened. What happened? Some people were set ablazed. Allaah refered to these people as believers. Since you justified keeping dogs cos the people of the Cave kept dog and they were called believers, I believe you can justify setting yourself ablaze too since the the people burnt in the ditch too were believers!!!

" Ask the people of knowledge if you do not know"

Please seek the right knowledge, not according to your limited understanding but according to the Quran,as Interpreted by Authethic Hadiths and as Understood by the Sahabahs.

May Allaah guide us all.

I once heard about a survey that was carried out in a Masjid.

A salat was just concluded and before people could hurriedly leave the masjid, a questioniare was administered on everyone that was about to exit the Masjid at the door.

The question was " Which Surahs did the Imam recite in the First and Second raka'ahs?

Though the Imam ,for the purpose of this survey, actually recited the commonly known short surahs in the last Juzu'.

Despite this, it is bilwildering that an amazingly negligible percentage could remember talkless or pondering on the surahs recited 5 mins after the salat.

This happens a lot- we are in salat yet our mind in miles away in the wilderness of thoughts mostly about this ephemeral Dunya.

Conduct this test on yourself and let's get ourseves evaluated before we are questioned.

The OP has admonished us.
We all have to be keenly watchful.

JazaakaAllaah.

In Islam, this act is condemnable. It is an act of barbarism to incite hostility between animals. It is also abominable to want to change the natural way of life (fitra) of all things created.

It is one of the plot of Shaitan to arouse in us False desires of cruelty to animals. Islam forbade sliting the ears of cattle, deliberate inflicting of bodily harms to animal, changing their natural diet for fattening purpose or hyper-activity of mortal combat. It forbade punishing animals with fire or likes that brings torture or elongate their suffering at time of death.

Allaah decrees goodness in all spheres;including giving the rights of animals to them. Yes, we maltreat them cos we erroneously believe we have a control over them. NAY! They are only subdued to us by the power that creates everything living. In strenght, we are no match to them.

If u want to slaughter animal, slaughter with mercy, sharpen your kill object properly and kill in the most humane way that reduces agonies.

Some narrations from the children of Isrealites shows are some people were admitted to Paradise just cos of there kindness to animal. Likewise, some will be punished for making worldly gains from ill-treatment of animals. Infact, Allaah mentioned that some humans devoid of faith are just similar to cattles. Verily, they are even worse than cattles.

The Messenger said " Show mercy to the creatures on Earth, and The One above the heavens will show mercy to you"

"He is not part of us he that does not show mercy"

Allaah is Just! And He will judge between the animals and the hornless one will be made to retaliate for the harms done to it while on Earth by the horned ones. And all animals will be turned to dust!

If this befalls the animals, what will be the lot of the human acccomplise?

We should derive entertainment in other spheres and not in obvious act of cruelty to animals upon which our sustenance rest.

olupentane: Sallam
I saw someone measuring their family zakatul fitr with a mudu, but I'm not she's doing it the right way.

After filling the mudu with rice, normally a heap would be formed, but she made it flat, such that the rice level with the rim of the mudu( yoruba: ipinreju). you know if you are buying a cup of rice you'ld definately not accept that measurement. just want to know if the mudu's case is different.
Sallam.
Wa alaykum salam.

From Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allaah(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoinedzakaat al-fitr, a saa’ of dates, or a saa’ of barley, upon all the Muslims, slave and free, male and female, young and old, and he commanded that it be paid before the people went out to pray.” Agreed upon.

So what is a Saa'? A Saa' consist of 4 measurements of Mu'd( mudu). The scholar agreed that the Saa' is a measure of volume. For instance, a Saa'a is approximately 3kg of Rice. It is also regarded that a scoop of measurement of the two palms of an averagely-built person equals a Mu'd.

Based on this, if you are using rice as the staple food ,either of the choices above suffices as required per head, in shaa Allaah.

The Problem is our own definition( in Nigeria) of "mudu".

1st "Mudu" is that which is used in markets(mostly lagos) for measurement. This is not the mudu referred to by the messenger.

2nd "Mudu" is that which is locally fabricated for measurement on occassions of Zakat-ul fitri like this. You usually find this sold in mosque and some designated areas. There are commonly two(2) types of this.

(A) The small one- this is the approximate measurement of the Prophet's prescription. Four(4) of this makes a Saa'-a measurement/person. This is the measurement that best fit the name "mudu"

(B) The bigger one- this is erroneously called the "mudu" but is actually best referred to as a Saa'. One measurement of this is required per person.

NOTE- Both A and B can be used. AND BOTH ARE A MEASUREMENT OF THE SURFACE LEVEL MEASUREMENT( ipereju) NOT HEAPED. Whoever gives heaped, threads a path of caution and get extra rewarded, in shaa Allaah.

This is the standard. Any other measurement( like milk tin and kongo or regular market mudu) are only derivatives of this standard and recourse should be made for conversion to this standard if they are to be used.
Allaah knows best!
