Travel › Re: Are Nigerian Hotels And Guest Houses Over-priced? by Pennywise(m): 3:32pm On Jun 24, 2010
NaijaNaWaa:
I've stayed in some "no name" hotels and penzions in Europe whose architecture, decor, environment, services, etc will make the Abuja Hilton look like an Ajegunle shanty and whose room rates are like 10% of an average VI hotel. I think that it is the forces of demand and supply - for those who understand basic economics - that is at play rather than diesel and water. If diesel and water are so expensive to account for the high cost of Nija hotels then millions of ordinary Nigerians who provide these same services in their homes and offices all year round cannot afford them.

Recently I attended a conference and stayed in sea-side Resort (managed by Continental) in East Africa. The rates are far cheaper than some run-off the mill VI shanty hotels and yet they're fully booked. Another striking observation was that their guests were 99.9% foreigners mainly Westerners on holiday unlike in Nija where 95% of the guests are local looters and thieves. Another striking difference was that thro out my week long stay, the number of vehicles in the car parks were less than 5 at any given time. You'll be lucky if u ever find a parking space at Abuja Hilton or Sheraton where the thieves spend their loots and park all their cars.

It all boils down to supply and demand. Perhaps there are fewer hotels to meet an increasing demand. And what worries me the most is the poor architecture, design and decor of Nija hotels especiallly in Abuja. Those shanties cannot be allowed to stand in a society where there're building regulations. And yet they charge so much for so little. Diesel my foot.
Oh boy, I feel you. It is not all diesel and taxes. A lot of it depends on price fixing by the numerous quasi-legal hotel associations that abound. They tend to be very active in certain towns which makes hotel rates in these places defy logic.

Thanks tigerpaws.

You are one tiger who knows her prey. The boy looks like my dog handler- obviously not as responsible.

I hate the very idea of having moderators on NL. But your case is a good example that lends itself to one. Otherwise Mr 19 is going to brag to his friends about his escapades on NL and before long this forum will be thoroughly infested.

I'll advise the OP to take the opportunity as it is a platform to move to a better place in the future.  By the way, I dont understand why most people in Nigeria consider financial incentive as the most important factor when looking for jobs! What about prospects or jobs that provide unlimited opportunities?
Our political/economic climate is to say the least unstable. Most pple will prefer to cash-in on what is presently available than join in a long line of people at KPMG seeking 'unlimited opportunities' that may never come.

@OP
This is advertisement of a crime and at least two pple are guilty of either baby kidnapping or sale (buyer is as guilty). The criminal-in-chief of this enterprise would be the 'herbal medical doctor'.

Chances are that they will get away with it b/c this is Nigeria.

Pelpelly:
Those dealer's who have been doing pre-orders for years now and have been doing so successfully will still be alright with or without the Forum. I will however admit that the forum is a great place to offer our services to those who look for specialty or uniqueness, it is unfortunate that some have chosen to take advantage of this. But truth be told, you can really get scammed by any forum or by anyone if you do not exercise wisdom. As it has been said many times over, IF SOMETHING SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE 9 times out if 10 IT IS.

I go back to those of us who have been doing pre-orders successful and who have clients that can attest to our services. Should the "pre-order mess" be exiled or discontinued on this forum, our clients may still choose to pre-order from us and these same clients will tell their friends, colleagues, acquaintances, ect. who may choose to come onto NL to check out the vehicles that we have listed (or we all know too well that Nigeria is a highly referral-based society). Do we now say that we will close the whole Auto section of Nairaland? I think not.

In my eyes, the best solution is let it be. I would willingly bet that the ratio of those who have received exceptional services through pre-ordering from dealers on NL to those whom have been scammed is heavily tilted towards the later. When one bank is robbed, other banks take notice and stay on alert, they do not go and completely change the way they do business. Now if more come and say that the scams are becoming rampant in pre-ordering, then I would say we have a means for concern. This is my humble opinion and I in no way am trying to say my heart does not go out to those whom have been scammed by scoundrels.
Indeed car pre-orders predates NL and it still goes on everyday outside NL. It is also true that pple are getting their fingers burnt every day. Go to police stations and EFCC offices. I have heard of a house going up in flames as a direct result of pre-order gone bad. Worse things have been known to happen. What some pple who mean well are saying is that fraudulent peeps should not be allowed to ride on the back of this forum to commit fraud.

Yes there are honest dealers. Infact I have penciled down 3 names I feel comfortable with but certainly not on preorder platform where I cant even trust myself.

there will still be fraudulent dealers even without the pre-order system.[/quote]No question. Afterall there was fraud b/4 preorder came. The very nature of the preorder system lends itself to too much abuse potential. And the kind of money that is involved-I mean we are not talking cell phone money!

My final advise to Seun? Pull the plug on pre-order now!

Vicjustice:
Gentleman, i beg to differ.
And while i acknowledge the fact that "not all Nigerians toiling in the UK are from poor backgrounds", i do not accept that a person from a wealthy home would intend to illegally "do some odd jobs" to survive, except two things are responsible: either he is a false someone or, he is an irresponsible person/a prodigal child.
It is not a sin to be from a poor home (afterall, many people from poor homes become rich with reasonable determination), but it is something abhor to exaggerate one's financial or social stance; there's just no need for self pomposity
Thank you for elevating me to 'Gentleman' you lowly patronizing rascal. What does one have to do on NL to have a simple rational exchange without getting insulted?

Vicjustice:
Why do you guys waste so much time and energy responding to the Poster, can't you see that he is a lying dreamer?
He claims to be a regular traveller to the UK, then,  that means one thing; he should be from a wealthy home.
So, then, a person from a wealthy home now intends to illegally "do some odd jobs" to survive, this explains two things: either he's a false someone or, he's an irresponsible person (who would most likely put his cousin into trouble).
And by the way, what nature of commodity or article that would required only a human courier because it "not be shipped or sent to the owner", is that not a controlled substance in the form of you know, expensive powder?
Finally, this guy claims to have a 2 months UK entry clearance, does something like that exist? Those of you who know about the UK would know that the UK does not issue any visa shorter than 6 months.
   I reckon this guy a time-waster.
I did notice that 2-mth UK visa thing and I wondered if there has been a policy change (They are always changing these things). Having said that not all Nigerians toiling in the UK are from poor background. Some are actually from wealthy homes (maybe not cash-wealthy).

I prefer to deal with issues as presented rather than try to ascertain veracity or otherwise. But then considering the background you've had on travel it will be hard not to ask these questions.

OYINKANSOW:
Don't come to the UK and become illegal unless you want to really suffer, curse the day you were born and curse God and start wondering what you came to do in life. Its that bad. I am not lying. UK is not really different from Nigeria apart from the infrastructure and security and sanity of living. But it is worse than Nigeria because here there is no atom or molecule of mercy. Nobody cares. You can still come as a tourist and really enjoy your holiday maybe some 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 years time if you look somewhere else now. A word is enough for the wise.
I agree with u bro. UK suffer not for joke. Like everything else for Uk, na original. When you see am you go know am.

Autos › Re: The Preorder Mess by Pennywise(m): 11:36am On Jun 19, 2010
Seun called this the pre-order mess, I say we have not seen any mess yet. Real mess dey come.

What we have right now may be the early stages of a growing pyramid scheme. Name and recognition is good. That is what drives a business esp a pyramid scheme kind of business. The failed schemes we had succeeded not just b/c we knew the operators but b/c they had very visible and identifiable assets often in real estate compared to this that is founded on names alone.

Assuming someone preorders with a deposit of 1.5 mil. Car is delivered and buyer makes good and everyone is happy. Then 100 pple deposit 1.5mil giving seller 150mil in raw cash. That is very tempting for a young man with or without visible assets. Some will split with the money before you can say "my preorder". This is Nigeria. With the way things are (with respect to law enforcement and the judiciary) I will probably take my chances if I was dealer. Police and Judiciary give or take 15mil, personal security over 2yrs <6mil. In 2 yrs you would have forgotten abt the NL dealer. Life goes on.George D and other beneficiaries will continue to enjoy their cars.

Some dealers may mean well. But this business model puts enormous burden of risk on the buyer. Dealers should pull their own resources to bring in cars. Patronage will grow if you remain on the mark in quality. Most peeps wont mind paying a little extra for that.

A good number of the dealers were already successful in their biz b/4 the preorder started. All they need to do is grow. There is too much at stake here if it fails.

You will be surprised at the capacity of the human body to endure beating and pain. Man is actually a very strong animal.

Many years ago as a uni-student I was among a night mob that took on a notorious thief caught red-handed. I heard later that he lived but I didnt hear him stealing again. Ever.

Its a very big shame.

Most of the posts and new threads with funny accusations is beginning to look like they have some kind of angles to them. Check this new thread for instance: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-464665.0.html

It looks more like the poster is simply trying to discredit nairaland or make it loose credibility and then advertise the website he carefully displayed in his signature line: http://www.naijacardeals.com/
I am sorry but your premise and deduction is wrong. If you read this thread and you note the sequence of events you cant help but feel the anguish of the victim.
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-419077.128.html

Its so painfully sad that one small uni-boy is causing all this brouhaha (if that pix is correct). All I would have loved to do (if I was Bafam) is to seek a chance to spend a few mins alone with him in a 12 by 12 room. In case you are wondering no I am not gay and yes he can keep the money when I am done.
Politics › Re: Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by Pennywise(m): 12:35pm On Jun 17, 2010
Where are the vets in the house? Do cattle normally eat mangoes? In all likelihood those animals died of some kind of contagious disease. Fulanis are trying to extract penance in human blood. This should not be taken lightly. Its a pity the igbo army officer is playing along probably for self preservation.

Arrested persons should be released and the cattle investigated for an epidemic.
