And whilst you are at it you can ask for your manacles too. I am abroad too, but I am tired of being called a monkey every time because I am African. I am tired of being asked, 'why do you guys keep coming to 'steal' our jobs?' So I want to come back home, to my beloved Nigeria, to my beautiful Africa. This brings to mind the question Lucky Dube once asked in one of his songs: 'Do you want to be a well-fed slave or a hungry, free man?' It took me a very long time to finally be able to answer this question. Nigeria is my country, and good Lord, how proud I am of her! Agriculture › Re: Using Pvc Pipes For Drip Irrigation by PharoahIII: 10:44am On Jan 13, 2020 |
DeLaRue: Again, some of your figures just seem way above what a 1 or 2 hectare drip irrigation set up should cost. You claim your borehole needs to be up to 100m deep. Is that because you wrongly assumed you would need 130000 litres per day? Also, most boreholes, even at 100m deep, will not yield that much water on a daily basis. My borehole is 'only' about 45m deep, though I agree that every location is different.
And although I was advised that the output from the borehole would be average, so far we have been pumping about 10000 litres per day, everyday since early Nov., with no problems. The borehole pump cost around 50k I think and we've not had a single problem with it - may be that's just down to luck. Yes, we spend about 5k per week on petrol, but I don't understand why you should need N1.2 million pump, even if solar. I suspect your figures are so high because you over estimate your water/irrigation needs.
Finally, have you considered whether you have the capacity (labour, on-field experience, management & marketing experience) to farm 1 hectare of cucumber at a time. Can your market absorb that many cucumbers each harvest? In my case, my 1 hectare is divided into 6 sections & we plant on a rolling basis but rarely more than 2 - 3 sections at a time. Thanks a lot for your response. But I do not really really think I have grossly overestimated my water requirement (1-1.5-acre inch seems to be the daily standardized rate.) Lets take a 1-hectare cuke farm, for example. Assuming a 25000 plant density, 65000 litres of water will translate to around 2.6 litres /plant a day. Some drip emitters have a flow rate of 2L/hr, so assuming pressure is not a problem, the drip system will only have to run for 80 mins in order to supply 1 ha of a cucumber farm with 65000 litres of water |

Pistotita: I will not say you should not use what you want to use, but you will have too many leakages you will need to block. Or maybe topgit gum can help out. And as I pointed out earlier, this option is worse than pvc as it is more fragile. You are going to waste too much time perforating irregular emmitter holes on it. You may think it works after installation, but trust me...you will see how unwise your decision is when you eventually get drip. Buy 0.3 to 0.4mm drip thickness (leave out 0.2mm), buy connectors with valve, and make sure you have end caps. Since you are using borehole, no need to add filter. Leave out venturi fertigation kit as it is one of the worst accessories in drip. I hate it with passion. Ask your seller for other options.
If you cannot farm now, do not. Wait till you have everything intact. If I were you, I would wait till I have mulch too. After buying my drip, seeds and some other materials several years ago, I waited six good months to get other materials. No need to rush. Buy your equipment gradually. If your land rent is cheap, continie paying it till you are ready.
If your farm is near your home or in urban center, it is fine. But if it is far away, I think you should have gone for a land surrounded by enough water (not even an open well is ok). Even after paying for this land, i would not use it if i were you after reading this post, and returned both gen and sub pump. Instead of buying Submersible pump and generator, you could have bought gasoline in-line pump (mud pump). You are going to save the cost of fuel, and pressure will be extremely high. I have used the two and I know inline gasoline is the best for any farm. Those using residential borehole made a terrible choice. I will take it only if the farm is in urban center and logistics and conveniency override cost of running water pump. I have met someone who argued with me that land near river is bad cos it is flooded during rainy season, and I smiled. Another one fought me cos she believes river water carries pathogens, and i said ok. Two of them are yet to start cos ths cost of digging wells on their farm is extremely high, and they are financially comfortable. Now, they are in tight corner. They may deceive themselves thry are yet to start cos of another reason, but I know that is the main cause, and they hace not realised it yet until they waste so much money. They will need to buy many tanks, and still will not have enough water. I do not need to be told that fruits and veggies are failure (except they downsize drastically) and most of the land area will become useless. It is what will definitely happen to them. @ oga pistotia I don't know if you can help me out of my quagmire. Now I want to go into cucumber/fluted pumpkin farming (1 ha each). Now I intend using drip irrigtion, but my problem is water. Now I know that the water requirement for vegetables is 1-1.5 acre-inch per week, which is roughly 65m3 of water daily per hectare. For 2 ha of land that's a whopping 130000 litres of water every day! Now I have two choices available to me: hand-dug wells or drilled wells (boreholes). Now from my findings drilling boreholes will be prohibitively expensive as its depth will have to be in excess of 300ft in order to get to a confined aquifer...now the issue is getting a submersible pump that will even have a flow rate of 20000litres/hr at a dynamic head of 100m will cost even more than 1.2 million (for the pump alone) and such powerful pumps will have a power rating in excess of 6HP so we are looking at at least a 9kva gen and above, so I dont think drilling a borehole is viable. NOW my question is do you think I could use hand-dug wells and then pump water with a gasoline-powered pump? From your experience do you think a hand-dug well will be able to supply even 50000 litres of water daily? I dont mind digging a few of them on my farm. |

He's not a full fledged General, not even a Lt. General! His dullardic tendencies didn't allow the military to promote him beyond a Maj. Gen. He's the only Nigerian military Head of State with the lowest rank of Maj. Gen.
So please Sir, kindly address him with his correct title as Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, thanks

Firstly I'd like to point out to those who do not think that Sowore is fighting for anyone but himself that they are incredibly wrong; Sowore is fighting for none other than HIMSELF. He contested in the just concluded elections, lost woefully and then called for a revolution. Why did he not call for the revolution before the elections? Why after the elections, after he had lost? Buhari will kill him if he wants to and nothing will happen. Nigeria will not, I repeat, NOT break up. In so far as the North wants there to be a Nigeria, there will be a Nigeria. The Fulani Jihadis have essentially outrun the entire South, and if there's another war this time around it will be very, very swift. They are essentially garrisoning the South. PS Nigeria has only ever had one revolutionary; Fela Kuti, the rest are counterfeits, mere paper tigers. |

She probably only acquiesced to the guy's request because her main guy left her. The moral of the story is you can always be sure that no matter what, a woman will ALWAYS look out for her interests. A woman's interests come before and before anything else. This is why love can NEVER exist between a man and a woman. |
