BluntTheApostle: We have not gotten to this stage. Supposing we can afford to pay into every account connected to a BVN, and allow people to shop, we still need great electricity supply to preserve perishables, especially meat and fish.
And who would pay for all these things? A low-income country like Nigeria? Please, let us be realistic. Except you are not in this country, you should know the realities of things here.
The government knows that they are financially constrained by the mere size of our population against our meagre budget, and that was why they took the risk to ease lockdown. People can do without 'perishables'. In place of meat ,eggs, in place of fresh fish, dried fish. Alternatively people could also dry meat. Yes, Nigeria happens to be poor but with a plan, everyone in this country can recieve 100 to 200k from the state. The state can commercialise some of her strategic assets post covid-19. At the moment, Nigeria should be spending her way out of this crisis. Consuming things that are locally made. We can afford anything as long as they are locally manufactured. That should be the principle guiding Nigeria's response. Countries that fail to spend now in a bid to sustain their economy will reap the bitter pill in no distant time. No one is under any illusion that Nigeria is rich but Nigeria has to spend strategically and aggressively if it has to break the chain of poverty. If I was running the show I would be talking about 40 to 100 billion USD in spending for this fiscal year. |

BluntTheApostle: There are no true alternatives to markets.
Forget online stores. They will be overwhelmed if we were all to shop. Moreover, how many online stores manage perishables well?
It might work in developed countries with solid road networks. But in Africa, where most countries are low-income, online stores would be overwhelmed if we were to erase physical markets. What about involving the military in the supply chain? What about paying money into every account connected to BVN so that people could buy prior to lockdown? What about using toll free phone lines for orders? There are lots of things the government can do differently if they are serious. The NURTW have units in every nook and cranny of Nigeria. Their network can be used to sustain the supply chain instead of online stores or in conjunction with online stores. |

emmasege: There are alternatives to 'church gathering' as individuals can still meet at family or house fellowship level. But there is no alternative to going to market. People must feed.
Abi Bishop will feed his flock (tens of thousands) with physical food after feeding them with spiritual food? Jesus did it, Bishop should also do it.
Bishop Oyedepo should announce free lunch for all worshippers on Sunday with an additional #5000 pocket money for indingent worshippers every Sunday.
And let no pastor sermonise worshippers to give. The giving should be voluntary and the poor should not be made to feel as if they sinned by not giving or that they are blocking their source of blessings by not paying tithe.
The gospel has gone beyond the elementary doctrines of tithing, giving and prosperity. There are alternatives to markets, any public gathering can cause the spread. What the government should have done is home supply of the basics or 100k per bvn cash payment prior to a complete lockdown. |

seunmsg: Nigerian banks are too fragile. They can hardly survive any downturn in the economy without massively laying off staff.
Some of these banks also bite more than they can chew. What Access bank is going through now reminds me of my little stint with BankPHB.
BankPHB acquired spring bank late 2008 in a very hostile manner. Billions of depositors funds was committed into the acquition. By March 2009, the bank was already distressed and laying off staff. The hostile nature of the takeover also made it impossible for the quick integration of the operations of the banks. There was also the effect of the global meltdown and crash of the stock exchange market that year.
By the Sanusi came in as CBN Governor around June, the bank was already a mess. He did not bother to romance the problem, he simply killed the bank and other banks that were then struggling to survive the global meltdown and crash of the stock exchange market by late 2009.
Hopefully, Access bank won’t go the way of BankPHB. Nothing wrong with using depositors fund for an aquisition if you have a air tight strategy. Banks in Nigeria have refused to serve the populace. They only serve the government and oil companies. Therein lies their problem. |

wirinet: You people never tire of lying and false equivalence in trying to demonise Buhari and saintify Jonathan.
False equivalence. You cannot compare the structure of Saudi Arabia and Russia with Nigeria. Nigeria has 4 times the population and one fifth the oil revenue. Russia has about two thirds the population of Nigeria, but with the same oil exports as Saudi Arabia in addition to being the highers exporter of natural gas in the world. Both countries operate authoritarian regimes with little cost of governance. Meanwhile, Nigeria operates about the most expensive government in the world, only rivalled by that of the US.
Since you guys will not tired to push the myth and legend of Jonathan, we too will not tired to burst your lies and put the records straight. Which judgement did Jonathan get? please post the judgement here for all to see.
He tried educating Nigerians on the need to save, but he did not educate himself on the need to save, afterall the federal government collects 56% of the revenue of nigerian, how much of that did he save?
How much did Jonathan save, when he was borrowing money to pay salaries for his last 4 to 6 months? Who was expected to pay back the monies Jonathan borrowed?
Buhari had to borrow, due to previous debt obligations, rising inflation, rising population, rising cost of governance and most importantly, falling oil revenues
The irony is that it's not Buhari's or Jonathan's children and great grandchildren that will suffer, it's yours and mine.
You people are so obsessed with Jonathan vs Buhari fight that your minds are trapped in negatively and regression. You don't even think of progress. I can't respond to the jargon you wrote there! BluntTheApostle: Please, stop comparing Nigeria with Saudi Arabia on their dependence on oil. Saudi Arabia's oil and gas accounts for 68% of foreign export. In Nigeria, oil and gas accounts for over 91% of foreign exports, and in Venezuela, oil and gas accounts for over 95% of foreign exports. Which of these countries do you think would be worse of if anything negative happened to the global price of oil?
Please, what did Saudi Arabia do differently, other than planned to expand non-oil industries just like what Buhari did when he gave tax holidays in the mining sector, pumped funds into transportation, and boosted agriculture?
Which people frustrated Jonathan's efforts to diversify? Which groups frustrated his efforts to fight corruption?
Show me where the will was to save for the good of all? Did you see the amount found on his wife? The woman claimed that no one complained that she stole their money, but she couldn't account for the over 9 billion naira found on her, or for the properties that she and her thieving husband accumulated.
Why does government borrow? Go and take some Economics classes and come back.
There is no proof of incompetence here.
Buhari is obviously more educated than you.
That is why I said you should take some Economics classes so that you would stop showcasing your ignorance. Mrs Jonathan did not have any public office under Jonathan's government. Someone that claims that a president who only reads cartoons in local dailies is better suited for public than a PhD degree holder would certainly have comprehension issues. A woman that had her own financial institution before her husband took political office is the one some you want act as if she did funds from Abuja to survive. Since you've decided to be arrogant in your ignorance I won't educate you on what the others did. Mexico adopted a different strategy from Russia and Saudi Arabia. Economics is too complex for people like you. If that wasn't case, you would have understood the parallels between Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. Mining is an extractive industry like the crude oil sector but the rules governing that sector was deliberately skewed in favour of the communities and those mining. Since when did corruption become an export commodity or indice that reflects diversification or how good an economy performs? You said oil is their highest export earner and yet they couldn't do what did for mining, agriculture or transportation. Buhari is more " educated " than me, go and ask him what Saudi Arabia and Russia did. |

BluntTheApostle: Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have similar structures? What do you mean by similar structures? I know Saudi Arabia to be a monarchy, and Nigeria a democracy. Russia is democratic with a relatively stronger central government that is getting more powerful under Putin. And if you mean economic structure, check the disparities between Russia's major exports, and check the wide disparity between our major exports and other exports. Saudi Arabia, aside oil, draws in a lot of revenue from tourism just like the United Kingdom, and this can more than serve as a buffer against oil price crashes or fluctuations.
Because we officially entered into a recession under Buhari does not mean Buhari caused the recession. Jonathan was warned earlier by the Economist to save, diversify from oil, and fight corruption. Instead of heeding, they were spending dollars on reelection campaigns. As way back as 2014, there were already telltale signs of the recession, and before the 2015 election, Charles Soludo warned about tough times ahead:
The presidential election next month will be won by either Buhari or Jonathan. For either, it is likely to be a pyrrhic victory. None of them will be able to deliver on the fantastic promises being made on the economy, and if oil prices remain below $60, I see very difficult months ahead, with possible heady collisions with labour, civil society, and indeed the citizenry. To be sure, the presidential election will not be decided by the quality of ‘issues’ or promises canvassed by the candidates. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/buhari-vs-jonathan-beyond-election-charles-soludo/
Who said I expected miracles from Jonathan? He did little with so much, and lacked the will to fight corruption. People even got funds on spiritual matters out of funds meant to fight Boko Haram. The Economist called him the Ineffectual buffoon
And what did Jonathan himself do for his community when he was president. It was Buhari who fixed the abandoned road to Otuoke.
Which Nigerian leader is not a despot? Do I have to list human rights abuses that happened under GEJ? Saudi Arabia is structured like Nigeria because the resources bearing regions in both countries are being looted to finance the excesses of their respective ruling elite. Both countries have been heavily dependent on petroleum resources for their respective budgets. In contrast to Nigeria, Saudi Arabia prepared for eventualities like this since 2016. Like I pointed out earlier, Muhammadu Buhari, your petroleum minister and president had enough time like his counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Russia but he did nothing despite that being the cardinal point of his campaign. On Jonathan, you are not being truthful. He made several attempts to pass the necessary laws but you people frustrated every effort in the parliament. He tried educating Nigerians on the need to save the rainy days but you people decided to " occupy Lagos" and leaders went to court against him . When you finally got the judgement you wanted, Jonathan stopped saving. That money he saved is what Buhari has exhausted from the Sovereign Wealth Fund Jonathan created yet you are blaming him for Buhari's failure. Buhari doubled Nigeria's debt with 5 years and has virtually nothing to show for it. He has plans to borrow more, none of you is complaining about him, you are still blaming Jonathan for Buhari's failure. You know you are incompetent and you apply for a job! Well, Nigerians did not ask for a PHd but for a "Nepa bill"..let him create more Bill's for you Nigerians! God being so kind, oil can't foot the bill any longer. They will tax the hell out of you, your children and your grandchildren. E no concern us! |

Yet, people like you didn't learn, today all of Nigeria has to suffer for the foolish decisions people like you made. I voted for Buhari to begin the rebuilding of the country. I understand that our problem goes beyond leadership, and is more of structure. So, I didn't expect miracles from Buhari. However, as at 2015, GEJ had overstayed his visit. This shows you don't understand how these countries are structured!
