Nairaland General › Caverton: Labour Threatens To Cut Power, Fuel Supplies To Rivers by PHijo(op): 9:35pm On Apr 09, 2020
United Labour Congress of Nigeria, ULC, has threatened to throw Rivers State into total blackout and fuel scarcity, among other threats, over the arrest, arraignment and detention of two Caverton Helicopters pilots and 10 oil workers by the state government.
They can do what they like, Nigerians should not complain when we show our other side. Rivers people are not known to give in to blackmail, intimidation and unjust acts.
“ULC, therefore, demands the immediate and unconditional release of these workers and the pilots. This will go a long way in showing Nigerians that the state government is not pursuing other agenda and is not anti-workers and truly anti-labour.
I wonder what is wrong with these labour leaders! So they think Rivers people deserve death and diseases? Wike should not blink. Rivers people are behind him in his fight against lawless labour leaders and their affiliates.

No group of people in Nigeria are more important than we the people of Rivers and their blackmail, intimidation and milking our land dry MUST stop now. If there is a legal loophole Rivers state should outlaw these thugs who call themselves labour unions or clearly define what would be illegal to embark on strike.

0m0nnakoda:
That is absolute nonsense
The price of oil was $ 18 under Abacha and one dollar exchanged for 80 naira for years.
Naira depreciated when democracy returned and reached 250 under Goodluck Jonathan despite record prices in excess of $100
Naira didn't change for 250 under Jonathan, that was under Buhari and the price per barrel should have been between 40-60 dollars per barrel.

The other day you said Rivers state is not important for Nigeria. People on this thread think otherwise. In Nigeria, no state is more important than Rivers when it comes to oil and gas. For Nigeria, no state is more in important than these four, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers. These 4 account for over 88 percent of Nigeria's oil output and oil accounts for 90 percent of foreign earnings.

Otherwise shut Caverton and any other helicopter service firm. We the people of Rivers state don't need them.

Hasn't the aviation minister representing the Federal Government state clearly that Caverton got clearance to operate the flight?

Or was Wike expecting that he should be the one to grant such clearance?

I hope Wike remembers his time as a Federal Minister and how the Federal Government can frustrate a state government like he did to Rotimi Amaechi.

Time for neighboring states to benefit from Caverton's relocation from Rivers.
If you understand how the sector functions, neighbouring states can barely benefit. Come to think of it, of what benefit has the company been to Rivers state?

We never felt their impact. Most of us never knew they were in Rivers state self.

That's the reason Nigeria is the way it is. You have no right to question Zuckerberg's decisions.

That he has failed to donate at this point in time doesn't necessarily mean he is stingy. Virtually everyone has a different growth strategy. Zuckerberg's strategy may not permit him to share his wealth at the moment and even if he doesn't, so what?

Other world leaders like Donald Trump are trying to contain covid-19 but you guys are trying to forcefully spread it in communities you never took care of before the virus and have no plans to take care of . Their governor took the necessary measures to halt a spread of the virus. There are reports of infected people being brought to work in the oil and gas sector. Now the governor have tried to contain a spread of the virus thru quarantine, lockdown and tracking of movement in and out of the affected areas . There is no testing kit in the
state. Nigerians are insisting on stopping the governor from containing the virus. That is not to add to the list of gross human rights abuses and deliberate environmental degradation. It is about time Nigeria's Oil be treated as the blood Oil that it is.

You just keep making wild assertions without data
My post on this thread was data while yours are just unfounded nonsense
How much petrodollars did Nigeria earn last year how much did we spend on imports
Fact figures not pulpit assertions

No they do not share the oil dollars.

The Nigerian naira has a finite value determined by its GDP and market forces.
You are the one who is ignorant and proud

Foreign Investors invest in Nigeria, loans enter Nigeria both to government and private sector
Dangote is investing $12 billion in a refinery in Lagos (borrowed),Chinese are investing in Lekki, billions are coming into Eko Atlantic etc ,Last year diaspora remittances were $18 billion, Indians bring in investment capital like the Chinese etc
All the Money is traded for Naira and becomes part of the economy . So this ridiculous claim that ALL the dollars spent in Nigeria is from oil is ignorant and silly

Nigerians earn their naira in activities that generate output worth $ hundreds of billions of which oil is about 15%.
When they exchange it for dollars it is not a gift they are exchanging their economic output
You keep on living in denial! I don't have all the time to educate you on how nigeria functions.

The amount disbursed comprised of N524.59 billion from the Statutory Account, N16.30 billion from Non-Oil Revenue, N659.08 million from Excess Bank Charges Recovered for the Month, N104.76 billion from Valued Added Tax (VAT), and N1.04 billion exchange gain differences.
https://nairametrics.com/2020/04/07/faac-disburses-n647-35-billion-in-february-as-allocation-drops-further/

Oil revenue despite the sharp drop in prices still accounts for over 80 percent of government income.

I REPEAT! The intrinsic value of the Naira is crude oil in the Niger Delta. Without oil nobody will trade with or lend Nigeria money. It is the crude oil that gives people whatever confidence they have. Once oil prices are down that confidence evaporates, mostly when you have a government like the present one.

I better pass my neighbour

Buhari CANNOT stop a party he did not start

Do not kid yourself
Anyway you are changing the subject

Who cares where the money is raised.
The market is in Lagos and will remain there

I never talked about DSTV being based in Lagos,

The point was that DSTV makes money in Nigeria selling European content like the Premiershipthus refuting your rubbish about Dangote and Obajana

DSTV operates in Nigeria and those operations ADD VALUE and are subject to VAT

Shares traded in the stock market add value for investors in Lagos regardless of where the companies are located.
The Value Added in the stock market activity has NOTHING to do with what the company is doing.
If I make suya in Lagos that is Value addition. What has that got to do with how or where the cow was raised

I was just illustrating to you that you do not understand finance or capital markets and are just talking nonsense
You can't stop amazing me!
Dangote is not selling a service but a product, Nigerian Stock exchange renders a service to Dangote Cement and her shareholders. This means if Dangote choose to engage an alternative to the Nigerian Stock exchange it could make the Stock exchange irrelevant. The same cannot said about Obajana and her product.

Coming back to your DSTV analogy, DSTV you said, renders the service or airing European contents. I hope you could remember that at some point in time HiTV used to own those right to the European contents you made reference to.

The decision by the content creator to cut supplies to HiTV led to her demise. This is what tells you who in the equation is relevant. So your is irrelevant in comparison with Obajana or the communities that made Obajana possible through their gas assets.

Nothing to do with oil money
You keep repeating the same rubbish
Nigerians hustling in Belgium, Germany etc send thousands of vehicles to Benin to escape DUTY what has that got to do with oil
When Nigeria sells oil does it share the money to citizens?
The goods Nigerians based in the diaspora ship to Nigeria is not the bulk Nigeria's imports. The bulk Nigeria's imports are components needed in the oil and gas sector, fmcg and construction. Secondly, when those Nigerians sell their imports they sell them to a populace that is solely reliant on oil and gas.

Asking the question; " When Nigeria sells oil does it share the money to citizens?" Just shows how ignorant you are.

Yes, they share the oil money for their citizens. When goods are imported they are paid for in US dollars not Nigerian Naira. That is why one of Nigeria traditional source US dollars are the oil companies.
When board a bus or fuel your generator, that is oil money because Nigeria imports refined products with her earnings from crude oil sales and subsidies the price on the imported product with oil money.
Your summgled rice, Ghanaian alomo bitters etc are all paid for with petrodollars.

When your pilgrims get money from the pilgrim board it is ALL oil money.

When your pharmaceutical companies import from China or India it is still petrodollars at work.

When your farmers use fertilizers to grow their crop it is still oil money at work.

S&P, Moody's and other rating agencies know this and that it is why they recently downgraded Nigeria to junk status because it is obvious all other sectors you exist are a showing strong dependence on the oil sector.
