im surprised you say non-igbos should leave. you are sitting in possibly a Yoruba or Hausa town or some other non-igbo town to join this conversation. you should welcome us into your market as we welcome you into our markets.
My guy, you talk too much, almost like a woman. Guess what, your too much meddling does not help Eze Odumchi cause, it rather undermines it. I bet that is your mission, as I can barely fathom the motivation for your constant market woman drivels at every slight opportunity. Quit it chief negro, go look for someone else to taunt/torment.
PoliticsRe: Still On The Biafran Nightmares… By Olusegun-adeniyi by PointB(op):
Prof Corruption: Segun has finally realized there are two sides to a coin. Iloh's story has now been put in proper context thus exposing the underpinning guile and artifice. Since the credibility of the story is now in question, I am not surprised he is backing out of the biafran nonsense.
On the contrary Segun and Agbakoba have made a powerful pitch that the issue of Biafra should be revisted. According to segun, phrases like let 'let sleeping dog lie' and "let's move on' etc will never achieve anything meaningful. Unless you read something else, but this article is suggesting that the issue of Biafra need a leader bold enough to discuss it and bring the matter to closure.

Don't tell you did not read Agbakoba submission that contrary the distorted Nigeria story, the Jan 1966 coup was never an Igbo coup! Nzeogwu never represented Igbo in idiosyncrasy, his connection to Igbo is merely by name.

Biafra connote of very powerful part of Nigeria's history. Resolving the issue conclusively, is the only path the peace and progress in Nigeria. To insist on letting sleeping dogs lie, is a pretentious hogwash which will never bode well for Nigeria. In the next 100 years, literature of Biafra story (several versions) will be available online for our grandchildren to read. The scale of atrocities committed will certainly pitch my grandchildren against yours. Time to prevent such from happening is now, or peace continue to elude us all!

Still on the Biafran Nightmares…

31 Jan 2013

Olusegun-Adeniyi-Back-Page.jpg-Olusegun-Adeniyi-Back-Page.jpg

The Verdict according to Olusegun Adeniyi. Email, olusegun.adeniyi@thisdaylive.com

Last week, I failed to heed my own counsel by dabbling into “Biafra”, a hot-potato topic on which reason has taken flight on virtually all sides. But by rendering the account of my meeting with Rev. Moses Iloh, I also brought out some of the suppressed issues that our country may have to deal with if we are to achieve lasting reconciliation via truth, and really move forward. I have heard phrases like “let’s move on”, “let sleeping dogs lie” and other fanciful clichés in our pretence that we do not have truly critical issues. But we do have issues and until we successfully deal with them, sleeping dogs may only be pretending to sleep, and it will be difficult to build a virile and united nation. That much was evident in my conversation with the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN following the publication of my piece last week.

To the extent that we are all products of our backgrounds and cultures, the idea that somebody is a “detribalized Nigerian” is a big fraud as no such human species exists in our country today. But virtually everyone uses this delusionary phrase to describe himself or herself and people who he or she likes. In truth, however, it is a futile attempt to gloss over our diversity which could actually be a source of strength. That national hypocrisy indeed accounts for most of our problems since it is very convenient for a great majority to defend narrow/parochial interests within their various closets, notwithstanding public posturing to the contrary.

With so much bigotry from some Nigerians who cannot get out of the mode of using stereotypes in describing the “other side,” and with nobody or anything considered sacred, it is very obvious that pursuing the Biafran story is not worth the trouble for me. But when Agbakoba called that he felt pained by Rev. Iloh’s account of how his car was seized by the late Justice Agbakoba, I could not but listen to him. My conversation with the younger Agbakoba will therefore serve as my own closure on Biafra.

Agbakoba, who described Rev Iloh as someone for whom he has tremendous respect, felt the old man, who knew him and his family very well, should not have rendered his account in such a manner as to create erroneous impression about the Agbakobas and the Biafran war. “I was also involved in the civil war-- I was a Biafran soldier. I fought in the war so I am very familiar with some of the issues which Rev. Iloh discussed. One day I will write my own memoir as a Biafran soldier,” he said. Agbakoba, however, sees in Iloh’s account (which he said flows from Achebe’s book), within the context of a failure on the part of Nigeria’s leadership to heal the wounds caused by the civil war. He argued that the whole Biafran tragedy, for which his family also suffered, started “from a distorted account of a failed coup d’etat which was definitely not caused by the Igbo man. Because as far as I am concerned, the only connection that we had in relation to Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu being an Igbo man, was his name. His accent, his domicile and idiosyncrasies were totally northern. So, for reasons best known to him and his colleagues, they staged a coup d’ etat and it did not succeed. But what Igbos got for that was massive killings. We were in the North then and were actually part of the last people to cross the River Benue in Makurdi. I was on the last train.”

I am sure not many people, especially in the North, will agree with Agbakoba’s interpretation, which is also Achebe's thesis, that the 1966 coup d’etat was not an ethnic conspiracy. The fact that a section of the country saw it differently led to a pogrom against the Igbos in the North and ultimately a civil war. For Agbakoba, however, what is important in all these disputations is to find a leader who would have the courage to bring all the issues to the table, so that the nation could have a closure. “If we do not have a closure, the Achebe story, whether it is true or not, will continue be told and retold by people like Rev. Iloh. He is now in his 80s and he feels embittered. I, as a younger Igbo man, do not have that kind of bitterness but I understand the issues that he has raised. Anyone who has read Chimamanda’s ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ will see all the account of the civil war and the atrocities that were committed therein. They are not things that can easily be forgiven by the older generation of Igbos.”

Most of the national upheavals in our polity, according to Agbakoba, stem from the failure to successfully close the Biafran chapter in our history. And the only way to do that “is to recognise that Nigeria suffers a major structural defect; which was one of the main issues that came out of the Aburi Accord--that we are too diverse to build a very centrifugal type of federation. We need to recognize our differences, manage them and give ourselves the necessary space to stay in our corner. Since that has not happened, you will continue to have these occasional challenges and schisms that we saw in the story of your encounter with Rev. Moses Iloh.” I suspect that advocates of Sovereign National Conference will agree with the SAN on this score.

You guys should take it easy and understand what Eze Odumchi is trying to say. You need not to completely agree with him, but at the same time over-analyzing everything does not simply help anyone.

Yes, a can-fish has no hope of making it back to the sea alive. But that analogy does not imply that we are canned fish. I'm certainly not one. But the issue of Biafra is a very controversial one. Not help by the fact that many Igbo leaders of thought have not lend serious voice in support of it. Besides, as Eze Odumchi noted, if we play our cards/game well, Nigeria is big enough for to sustain our way of life and ensure our freedom and prosperity. The many resort to Biafra and secessionist threat is whenever this appears a mirage; whenever Nigeria once again display her ethnically motivated shenanigans.

Personally, I will embrace a fair and just Federal Republic of Nigeria or Federal Republic Biafra, whichever comes first.

Those posturing to assume the position of new mechanic, are yet to show the cars they have fixed. Which cars did the CPC fix, and which ones did the AC.N fix? Even car locally/regionally bequeathed them and in their exclusive preserve are badly managed, to the extent that the car owners are also grumbling about them. Being able to articulate the problems with the car, does not necessary imply you have the magic wand to fix it. Even a toddler mechanic knows the problem of the Nigerian car - it was not made in Nigeria, by Nigerians, and certainly not for Nigerians.

Nigeria ultimately need a new car; a made in Nigeria car! Not necessary a new mechanic!

Akanbi_edu: This is naive imo. This line of thought shows a basic lack of understanding of a typical Igbo thought process. You hear them saying they want office after Jonathan, they may actually be planning to assume office through unconventional means.

#Igi gogoro ma gun mi l'oju, okeere lati wo#
So what is wrong if Igbos want power? Don't Yorubas, hausa, etc want powers also after GEJ (even though that have had it for several years in the the past)? Why do you guys (especially from SW) always have goose pimples whenever Igbos matter is raised? Why? What unconventional means are you talking about? Why do grown men like enjoy spreading hateful and inciting lies against Igbos? What do you intend to achieve, another genocide?

Are Igbos not stakeholder in the Nigeria project also? Why this hatred and bitterness against Igbos?
PoliticsRe: Panic In Presidency Over Mounting Tension In Military - Talk Of Mutiny? by PointB: 2:11am On Feb 01, 2013
Perhaps we should look at employees of government at all level (ministries, department, and parastatals) to convince ourselves which tribe is actually favoured by government among Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, and any other tribes for that matter.

I don't know when SWners will ever stop heating the polity by peddling dangerous and inflammatory lies, especially against Igbos. This document in question has written all over it a conspiracy by the SW to evict the COAS for sinister or selfish reason; an attempt at maligning him for obvious reasons. The accusation of favoring Igbos is clearly bunkum until the list of all officer in all military formation in the country is made available for all to see.

I believe this should be the position of all neutral observers.

In fact I've decided to throw my support again behind GEJ for 2015 elections. He must be doing something right for folks to be this desperate to undermine his powerbase.
So, for now GEJ it is for me!
In fact, that is one reason I not quick to condemn him. Anytime something appear to favor any other ethnic group outside of Yoruba and hausa, you start hearing all sort of slurs, and blackmail.

As far as I am concern, GEJ has done so much more than Obj in term of policies, and power, rail, aviation, oil sector reform etc. I think he is someone who believe in fairness and equity. So if he is contesting in 2015, I believe it is of strategic interest to the Igbo nation, and all lovers equity to support him, otherwise we look at what PDP has to offer, if not suitable we rally behind APGA's candidate.

@PointB I hope you share my views on this.
We are on the same page here my brother.

As far as I am concern, the COAS is simply doing his job, some folk are just on a long thing, if they want to intimidate or blackmail him.

As for our new Eze, knowing him very well, I believe he certainly will agree with the rest of us. This blackmailing of the Igbo nation at every opportunity need cease. I think we should start another campaign to for the authority cite Military Academy in the SE/SS. Nigeria need to have regional balance in the infantry too.

Just so you know. There is nothing the be afraid of with the Igbo man. We believe in live and let live.

Let's do away with all the war mongering. Nigeria is for all of us.

My hausa, and Yoruba brothers, please take it easy, Igbo officers occupying just of few of these elevated positions will do no one any harm. If anything, we should be happy that Igbos are being reintegrated into the army in the best interest of Nigeria.

Peace to all of us (Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Ijaw, Edo, Efik...)

Frank-C:
Ndigbo, while berating this piece of propaganda, NEVER lose sight of the the real price - 2015 PRESIDENCY. GEJ is the real target, we just seem to stand in the way and hence must go down too. The oil bloc renewal from 2017 to 2019 are just too juicy to let go. This is also a wake up call for fellow Igbos that join the chorus. Look beyond the surface, the price may not just be what you think it is. You may just be a pawn in another man's chess board.

Some people want to get back to the Presidency via the VP backdoor. They seem not to be patient enough for other groups to lead hence all the incitement and gang up going on. From fuel subsidy protest to the chorus of 'clueless'and 'retardeen' and many others. They are actively swearing that an Igbo man will NEVER be president, even on this forum. This is not just about Ihejirika and some guy that care about the army. It is about 2015.

Choose you positions wisely. Look beyond the surface. The plot is deep. Judge GEJ and others based solely on what they promised to deliver to the SE and don't start doing that until at least the third quarter of 2014.

Sincere 9gerian: Oby made her allegations in public so any response to those allegations must also be made public.

Your suggestion of calling Oby to a room and giving her documents to peruse could be likened to calling El Rufai to a room and giving him documents to peruse so as to stop attacking the govt. Is that practicable?

Oby has obviously switched camps to either CPC or ACN and in the coming days her party affiliation will become obvious
I disagree. El rufia is a thug, and lately a bigot. Oby is relatively more reasonable, and approachable. The GEJ team should tailor their strategy to individual critics. Using same template for everyone one them is bound to backfire. Robert Greene wrote in 48 Laws of Power: "Know who you are dealing with, do not offend the wrong person."

Even if Oby switches camp to AC.N/CPC, it doesn't mean she can't be reasoned with, or won over! Nuff said.

I wonder what other details you expect from govt officials. The press release from Maku contained detailed response and clarifications but whether you believe him or not is a different issue.

Perhaps the CBN should give us history of the foreign reserve levels month by month from 2005 till date.
Yes I did read the report and it's detailed enough, but I can't help reading the other gutter technique of wicked step mother and shameless liars.

In any case, the populace (read media) is growing weary of the one-week-one-trouble bumbling of the president media team. Perhaps they should rework their strategy by adopting more proactive technique. I know the forces gathering against him (GEJ) is massive and well oiled. But that is the nature of things in this part of the world.

Let me give them (GEJ media team) a tip. Invite Oby to your office and give her tonnes of documents to peruse. That's all she wants, accountability and transparency. No need engaging her in public fisticuffs, you will lose even if you win!
PoliticsRe: Panic In Presidency Over Mounting Tension In Military - Talk Of Mutiny? by PointB: 1:28pm On Jan 31, 2013
This is a very lame attempt to whip up ethic sentiment in the military.

For starters why didn't they post the full promotion list(s) so that we can see for ourselves if they claims are correct.

While they are at it, it will be instructive if they can also include the state of origin of all the promoted officers (especially the Igbo sounding ones) so that we can see for ourselves if indeed those people mentioned are Igbos. We know the perchant for Nigerians to term some people Igbos and later not-Igbo base on their whims and caprice.

Finally, I can't help but notice a very high and obvious (or odious) pitch for Yoruba military officers in this. I could hardly see any serious usual hausa/fulani posturing in this contraption. Does that mean that hausa/fulani are cool with the exercise, and the problem is coming from the usually unusual suspect.

In anycase, let's see the colour and nature of this mutiny, Nigeria is indeed long overdue for one!

lol,

I wasn't blaming Sanusi. But we cannot detract the depletion of the foreign reserve with Sanusi/CBN policy of defending the naira with the reserve. Now whether that is a good or bad policy, is matter for another discourse. That said, I support Oby's call for more accountability. She should have asked nicely though. cheesy cheesy grin grin

Interesting points you raised Op,

I personally think there is a huge mix-up somewhere in the figures. However, the FG defense team have done a shoddy job putting their defense across. Calling Oby names, and question her integrity as means of defending their boss is tasteless, and tactless. It's a sure way to lose whatever sympathy they have left.

But I lean more towards the FG figure because the record are there, and so many news articles on Nigeria foreign reserve exists for those who care to find it, so I think Oby probably made a mistake in her figure.

On the more pertinent issue of mismanaging the reserve (whether $1 or 100 Billion dollars), I believe the FG team need to be more transparent and engaging, and less use of gutter technique. The jury is still out on the prudence of Sanusi/CBN depleting the foreign reserve to defend the Naira, and of course sharing the ECA money with the 'greedy' governors. This should be very the debated is directed at. Foreign reserve is not something anyone can easily 'chop.'

In any case, this is a straight forward matter. The GEJ team are just bungling the issue by being too overly defensive. Time for GEJ to fire all of them, starting with Maku, then Okupe. No one should lay any hand on Abati, we need him to write the story of the GEJ days when he finally leaves office!
PoliticsRe: Ezekwesili Lied Shamelessly – Doyin Okupe by PointB: 4:16pm On Jan 30, 2013
I believe there is a mix-up in the figures somewhere, perhaps in Oby figures (as it it easier to verify the CBN records). But the government defense team is doing a shoddy job in their defence. There is absolutely no need to go all ninja on her when simple explanation to Nigerians would have sufficed.

Like someone said earlier, they could have explained how they bowed to governors pressure to share the ECA funds among states. State governors also have the responsibilty to step up and clarify how they spent the funds they received from the ECA.

As for the foreign reserves, is there is any knowledgeable person here who doesn't know that Sanus/CBN used a huge chunk of the foreign reserve defending the Naira, rather than accept the IMF recommendation to devalue it. The reserve only started swelling after the partial subsidy removal. The FG team should have steered the debate towards this line, allowing Nigerians to discuss the prudence or otherwise of defending the Naira with the foreign reserve rather than devaluing our national currency. I am sure the reaction will be mixed.

Anyway, it is not too late to start this 'debate'. Madam Oby should tone down a little, she just might not be entirely correct after all. No one is infallible, not even madam due process.
