My brother, which one you dey na ? Why not rain abuse and curses on these people as you have done against Aregbesola over the same minimum wage issue? At least Aregbesola and all South West Governors are making a thoroughly decent fiscal effort to satisfy workers while Northern Governors are directly defying the FG . Amosun that you demonize all over Nairaland is paying despite meeting a daunting debt profile on the ground !!!!

Anything less than outright abuse against these folks just confirms you are an ethnic bigot targeting Yoruba folks. Some of us warned you that Aregbesola is not the enemy you were making him out to be with the minimum wage issue yet you would not listen. You and your co-travellers in hatred deliberately ignored impunity ,most common amongst PDP administrators, to begin pretending that the minimum wage issue starts and ends with Aregbesola. Sadly for you, it is now in the public domain that Northern Governors (many from the PDP) are outrightly saying they will not pay  !!!! The PDP , whether you like it or not, is the biggest culprit!!! Northern Governors are even holding the FG to ransom i.e no increased allocations to state no payment of minimum wages !!!! What say the likes of you?
Always the first and very quick to play the bigot card in every topic. Says so much about your kind of person, and the way you reason.

If you feel like insulting those folks or raining curses on them what stops you? Do you need my permission? Anything holding back your custic tongue? You must be deluded to think you can influence my post in any way. Nice try though!

Clinging on straw is a fair debating strategy. It means there is hope. Either you slip up, or an opportunity for escape might present itself. So over to you to substantiate your 'facts' further. Let me also help provide more insight to their agitations:

- Boko Haram want to be able to amputate hands or legs of the big boys as punishment for stealing

- they are angry that beer is not longer readily available in the bars but brandy, whiskey, baileys are the drink of choice in government house

- furthermore, local prostitutes have been replaced, by foreign (white) one, and Boko Haram is mad about this

- Christians still worship freely in the North, but Boko Haram will prefer this regulated

- Boko Haram insists those have agreed to practice sharia to do so 'in truth and in spirit'; in full throttle

- Boko Haram want militia disbanded in the North, they want to be the sole armed group; a monopoly of violence! grin grin grin grin

Northern Govs: We Can’t Pay New Wage Under Pressure

22 Sep 2011

Font Size: a / A
Northern states governors, under the aegis of Northern Governors Forum (NGF), yesterday said they would not succumb to pressure to pay the new national minimum wage to civil servants in the employment of the various states in the North.

By the new National Minimum Wage Act, the least paid civil servant in Nigeria receives N18,000 per month.

Chairman of NGF and Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, told reporters after the group’s meeting in Abuja that the Northern governors would not buckle under pressure to pay the new salaries.

“Each state is doing pretty well to implement the minimum wage, but we must emphasise the fact that the law of the minimum wage is talking of the minimum wage. And the issue of relativity or wage increase is not there, so we must not buckle unnecessarily under pressure to go and do what may not be sustainable.

“So we have agreed to stick to what the law says, and when the economy improves, the welfare of the workers will also improve,” he said.

The NGF, which raised eyebrows on the failure of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to repay the N450 billion they previously failed to remit to the federation account, said the action of the organisations had stagnated the activities of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Aliyu therefore described the failure of the organisations to make the payment as illegal and insisted that the repayments must be made, saying: “All the illegal deductions implemented so far must be deducted. We are appealing to everybody to ensure that the revenue allocation formula is looked at properly.”

On the security situation in the North with particular reference to Borno and Plateau States, the chairman of NGF said: “We looked at the insecurity challenges in the North and particularly in Borno and Plateau States and have agreed to go back to our communities and ensure that all those who have responsibilities to such are indeed open.

“On the issue of Borno State, we are very happy with the progress made so far in that state and we encourage the governor of the state to continue with what he has started.

With regard to the issues of Plateau State, we discovered and we know that the issue of Plateau State is not only a Plateau problem, it is a national problem that all of us, particularly governors in the North will make the necessary contact and will continue to support the governor to ensure that peace is established and protected on the Plateau.”

On the use of thugs by the governors to solve political challenges, he said NGF had resolved not to use any thugs either the “ECOMOG or any other sect” to resolve any problem in their respective states.

According to him, the use of thugs to solve political problems is like riding on the back of the hyena and in the process ends up in its mouth, adding that, “I can assure you that no Northern governor will use political thugs again, no matter the name.”

At the opening session of the meeting, Aliyu listed the agenda to include security challenges in the North and the way forward, the Boko Haram in Borno and Plateau States, constitution amendment, minimum wage, Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation, the restructuring of the New Nigeria Development Corporation (NNDC) and the restructuring of the NGF.

All the governors in the North except those of Benue and Kogi States attended the meeting. The duo however sent their apologies. The deputy governors of Katsina and Bauchi States were also present.

PoliticsState Of Amukoko, In Lagos State by PointB(op): 8:40am On Sep 22, 2011
In Amukoko, life is rickety, menacing

Residents of Ajeromi Ifelodun, Lagos community seek help over poor roads and menace of miscreants

WHEN Ajegunle and Mushin, former tinderboxes of Lagos metropolis, are trying to change their poor image in the eyes of other Lagosians, another community, Amukoko in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council, is becoming a new hotbed of violent clashes by groups of miscreants.

Long after his first visit to Amukoko, Kayode Ilori told The Guardian he would not forget in a hurry his first impression of the community.

“That was about two months ago, and it had just rained.

“There were cars and buses packed along the major streets, but you could not help wondering how their owners drove them through the hundreds of potholes on the roads.

“Then, shortly after we arrived on a motorcycle, we heard gunfire only to be told that groups of youths were fighting.

“My mind went back to those days when it was either Mushin or Ajegunle where such things happened.

“In Ajegunle then or Alaka area of Mushin, which is still a trouble-spot, there is no doubt that neglect by state and local councils contributed to the high level of poverty and the violence among groups.

“ We could not begin to count the potholes on Aliko Street where my relations live and I wonder if the community is part of the mega-city plan of the state government.”

Residents of Amukoko say the problem of bad roads has continued to unleash a litany of harrowing experiences on them.

All the roads in the densely populated suburb have completely collapsed, their drainages overgrown and blocked, which has exposed residents to the devastating effect of flood.

The main Mosafejo-Alaba Road that leads into the area from Mile Two has since metamorphosed into a death trap and residents are crying to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) to extend his magic wand to the area.

A fishmonger at Alaba Bus Stop Market, Alabi Adewara said, “going home after the day’s business is a bad experience.

“We suffer daily to make ends meet and situation is getting worse because many commercial vehicle operators always refuse to drive to the bus stop because of the state of the roads.”

Another, Jamiu Kuye, said the roads were constructed over two decades ago and had deteriorated to their present state owing to lack of maintenance.

“The roads have been bad for years. Most of them were constructed in the early 80’s and they are not being maintained.

“The bad roads and flood have made life almost meaningless for us. Anytime it rains, flood would take over the road, especially in areas where there are deep potholes.”

Another resident, Mr. Bola Kola, said, “Alaba-Ijora Road, which would have eased the traffic jam always experienced at Orile to Mile Two Road, is crying for attention.

“There is no sign that we are also beneficiaries of any efforts of government, state or local.

“May be it is because of the neglect that miscreants and anti-social elements have found Amukoko a haven from which to unleash terror on innocent people.

“Several houses have no toilets and there has not been any attempt by the local authorities to solve these problems.

“From time to time, a handful of officials go round, extort money from people and return to their offices.

“Here, payment of tax has not yielded any benefits contrary to what the government wants us to believe.”

Another resident, Tobe Aghara lamented “ The creation of local council development areas has not made any impact in Amukoko.

“We still lack the basic amenities we were denied before the LCDAs.”

He, however, explained that it wasn’t until 1997 when Amukoko was devastated by a tanker fire that the state government looked towards the area.

He said the then Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig. Buba Marwa compensated the affected landlords and the contract to repair the major road was awarded to major company.

“The road was constructed halfway and abandoned.

“ Since then, once it rains, the road becomes flooded.

“Everyday, women and children who don’t know areas where there are potholes, slip into the holes and get injured.”

He blamed the Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council for abdicating its duty to the community. Aghara also wondered why adjoining roads such as Edidi Street, Amukoko Oja, Mission Street and Adegboyega Street constructed in 2004 by the local council and commissioned same year failed to stand the test of time.

Also decrying the agonising experience they are exposed to daily, commercial bus operators disclosed that they have lost many of their colleagues to terrible accidents on the route.

“We are not even talking about the money we spend everyday to maintain our vehicles,” a driver, Sanusi, told The Guardian.

“On many occasions, our buses get trapped in the pot-holes and passengers would disembark and demand their fares. We are not having it easy here.

“Our prayer is that the government will remember us and repair our roads, build drainages and get rid of miscreants so we will have a sense of belonging like other Lagosians”, he said.

PoliticsRe: Chime, Fashola, Ribadu, Or Rochas For 2015? by PointB(op): 8:03pm On Sep 21, 2011
danjohn:
PointB, we all know that President Jonathan decided to seek only one term because of pressure from the Northern Governors / Political Elite.  The agreement to zone the office of the Presidency to the North in 2015 is implied and not overt.  I feel horrible engaging in this type of argument given that I consider myself a progressive who looks beyond tribe, ethnicity, and religion.  Above all I think that those of us who are educated and enlightened should be challenging the zoning status quo and not conceding to it.

As for the Fashola vs. Ayim comparison, Fashola has proven himself to be an effective administrator whose results speak for him.  Yes he has the Tinubu baggage but you cannot tell me that Ayim does not have corrupt PDP chieftains that he, unfortunately, has to work with in one way or the other.  Ayim does not have the achievements that Fashola has as an executive.  In fact, many Government insiders say that what Ayim has going for himself is that he is a "Yes Man" hence he stays in the good books of the power brokers in PDP.  Can you please list Ayim's meaningful accomplishments and objectively ask yourself if they come close to Fashola's.  We do not need sentiments.  As for Okorocha, his antecedent as a philanthropist is impressive and he seems to have his heart in the right place.  Moreover, the close election in Imo really boosted his name recognition.  Now is the time to see how well he can execute.  Right now, all he needs to do is to perform well to secure his legacy.

Btw, I am happy that the we both agree that PDP does not have an exceptional Northerner who is ready to run for President in 2015.  However, they can find a non-controversial mediocre like Yaradua to promote.  Remember they succeeded when they did that in 2007.

On a side note, you seem to be of the opinion that the next President must come from PDP.  Don't you think that strengthening the opposition will be good for our democracy?  We are not yet a country with political parties that are based on ideology.  With the exception of ANPP and its overt support for Sharia Law, most Nigerians just want to vote for a leader who will work towards providing us with the basic things of life.  I think that it is imperative that we have a credible and strong alternative to the ruling party that can put up a formidable national push for political power on the Federal level and state level across the country.  Having such an alternative will be an incentive for our leaders to give us nothing but their best.  I rest my case.  It was nice arguing with you bro.
In any case, run-up to the 2011 election, GEJ was under alot of pressure not to run. The Northern Governors and their political elite out-rightly rejected his candidacy, which made the raise candidates to contest against him. So where and when he implied that power will return to the North in 2015, I wouldn't know. You certainly made that one up, cos I am hearing it for the first time from you. If at all GEJ made any agreement in respect of power shift, he would have made it to the SE/Ohanaze who urged him on and threw in the biggest support for him outside his Zone before, during and after the election; and ensured no major SE candidate opposed him.

On the issue of Ayim and Fashola competency, Fashola so called administrative prowess are all based on what is on the PR machine. What exactly has Fashola done for people of Lagos state in concrete terms, I mean with all the revenue generate by that state. We all read Fashola is working, yet Lagos is easily flooded by rain because drainage are not cleared, and in 20 years, Lagos roads has never been worse than it is today. So I asked again what sets Fashola apart, aside Tinubu and the SW press? What are the so called achievements? Reel them out cos I haven't seen any that is not matched or surpassed by other governors.

And Ayim ran a very successful National Assembly as Senate President. His uncompromising attitude (contrary to your Yes Man portrayal of him) was largely responsible for the 'killing' of the Third Term bid of Obj. With all the Ghana Must Go bag flying around that time, people's integrity was easily compromised, but he stood firm. And if you know the  power-that-be (Chieftain), that he kowtows to, why not mention it. Talking about 'insiders' and 'sources' like some of our dailies is a clear indication of lack of substance in your case against Ayim. If you do, then tell us this corrupt PDP guy that Ayim is working with. I am sure Nairalanders are equally interested.

What made you think I care where the next President come from? Like you said and I agree, parties are just platform for winning elections. My fixation with PDP is simply because they have a better platform than any other party in the country. Even the so called opposition party are filled to the brim with disgruntle members of PDP; old wine, new wineskin. No clear cut difference in substance or ideology. From ACN, to CPC, to APGA, they all the same to me.

I am a progressive, but firstly a pragmatist. Only idealist will pretend tribe, ethnicity, and religion have no place in politics. Need I remind you, that alot of highly educated and progressive blacks (Oprah, Jesse, etc) voted for Obama because he was black (race), some almost scuttled his ambition because they thought he was Muslim (religion), and that was in the United States! Friend, eliminating tribal and religious sentiment in our election politics will not happen in 50 year, no matter how educated we are - primordial sentiments are in the DNA!

Nice debating with you man.
PoliticsRe: GEJ On The Inflation Rate And The Economy by PointB: 7:02pm On Sep 21, 2011
HNosegbe:
Yes, it is true that inflation rate overall has fallen to single-digits, but I think it is necessary, lest we fall into the trap of unnecessary complacency and back-patting, to remind ourselves that core inflation, which is inflation adjusted for the effects of volatile commodities like energy and food prices, is still above 11 percent. Also, our economic growth has failed to impact the majority of Nigerians because it has been largely concentrated in industries such as trading and oil and gas, industries which are not particularly known for creating jobs on a large scale. Our apparent macroeconomic progress is also accompanied by a structural imbalance which has ensured that the increase in national wealth is only circulated among a minuscule percentage of the population, leaving the vast majority without any benefits whatsoever. Thus, most Nigerians have not felt the impact of economic growth.

For this "growth" to be truly felt by Nigerians, the emphasis of government must be shifted from merely increasing GDP at an aggregate level to ensuring that the growth occurs more in the job-creating sectors of the economy, particularly manufacturing. This cannot occur without structural changes, a buoyant agriculture/mining sector to provide necessary inputs, self-sufficiency in refining oil, favourable trade laws and investment climate, a sound transport network that will emphasise rail over road transport, and, last but not least, steady and reliable power supply. These necessary conditions, along with sufficient conditions such as safety and security of lives and property, improved skill levels of the populace, improved health care delivery and improved attitude of the leaders and the led are among the necesary structural changes that government must lead the way in bringing about before Nigeria as  a nation can truly begin to make progress and fulfil its potential. Anything outside of these will be simply superficial.
Very insightful. But you should also acknowledge that alot of attention is being shift these day toward agriculture and it allied business. This shift is focus and strategy sure will have a direct effect on employment wealth creation, and better quality of live for the people. Hence I wont be surprise if the increase in GDP growth and drop in inflation is not as a direct result of effort in that direction. Regurgitating overused lines in every development should not be the case.

That said, I agree with you that more needed to done to ensure that progress made is not reversed and that more people benefit in the short and long term.

4 Ijaws against Urhobos (Ogbe Ijo, Gbarigolo, Olota, Okweagbe etc.),all in Delta State

Sanusi has cleaned up the banking sector.  There were so many risk management lapses and malpractices in the sector that Soludo overlooked.  Sanusi stood up against the power brokers in that sector even when it meant sometimes standing alone and today the sector has made a rebound.  Profits are up and balance sheets are healthy again.

As for Fashola, I think it is laughable when you infer that Fashola is incompetent and then go on to say that Ayim has competence and integrity.  Fashola may be not be perfect, but Fashola and Ayim are not in the same league.  As for Okorocha, he is yet to prove himself with concrete results.  He is in the above average category because of his positive overtures and PR.  We need to see results before he can be classified as good, great, or exceptional.

My brother, if you are concerned about the unity of Nigeria as you say you are, then the presidency needs to go back to the North in 2015.  Dude, the North wants power in 2015!!!!!!  Don't you get it??  Your argument about power going to the SE does not hold water.  PDP has a zoning arrangement.  Jonathan said that he will serve for 1 term and hand over power to the North.  Going by that assumption, I think it is safe to say that PDP will nominate a "non-controversial mediocre Northerner" in 2015.
Can you corroborate the bolded?

Indeed it's true that Ayim and Fashola are not in the same league. For while the latter has a treasury looter and felon as Godfather, they former has none. And if this is not a barometer for measuring integrity, then I wonder what is. As for Okorocha, he has portrayed his grasps of Imo state problems and challenges with amazing ease and some of the solutions he has proffered are very insightful. Beyond that, his antecedent in philanthropy across the nation set him head and shoulder above other politician. PDP will be foolish not to make overture to especially since they can barely any Northern politician that is up to scratch.

Dude, the SE want power in 2015!!! Don't you get it? Your argument about power going to the North does not hold water, on is simply because they are not bombing the places like Boko Haram and MEND before them? GEJ knows better not to make any commitment to the North. 2015 election will be very interesting, when the permutations begin to unravel.

@Jarus, I do not need to post the complete article, I was only interested in sections where he was was pointing fingers at other ethnic groups(Yorubas and Igbos to be precise)

Sanusi should not be judged on sharia banking, there is nothing wrong with encouraging a business venture that can only be  good for the country. It will create employment and give borrowers options they never had before. I think the idea is a win, win situation for the country. We should not condemn it just because we hear "Islam". No one is being forced to do business or borrow from an Islamic bank. Live and let live.

But I think his articles paints him in a negative light and shows him to be a Fulani/Hausa crusader and Islamist, based on his strong defense of sharia and attack of other ethnic groups. It would have been great if the man wrote about the plight of the poor almajiris who are not being educated but instead force fed religious dogma that leaves them with no practical skill to contribute to modern society. He wants them to have sharia and the Quran but no eduction to make their lives better in the 21s century He writes articles similar to what a KKK member or a Nazi would write about other ethnic groups. He blames Yoruba people and Igbo people for the ills of Nigeria and for its lack of unity, while conveniently leaving out the genocide committed by the Hausa/Fulani North against the Igbos, which led to the civil war. The most important episode in Nigerian History and the main reason we are not united. If Sanusi was a modern muslim like the great Ataturk of Turkey, he would have been suitable to rule a multi ethnic and multi religious country like Nigeria.

Based on his views backed up by his articles, the man is only fit to rule a muslim country like the Sudan where he studied Islamic law. Islama bad.
