@topic,
I dont know the percentage, but it's possible Rotimi Ameachi does, so there is no point trying to shout him down. The fact remains that if majority (above 50%) northern children had 'learn certain' things when they were supposed to, you will have fewer numbers of people of Northern extraction chanting hate message in the streets when there is crisis half way around the world. People who are in school, or who are skilled or semi-skilled would not lend themselves to an Almajiri kind of live-style. Education is a powerful weapon of self consciousness, personal freedom, and emancipation from religious bigotry and dogmas. Clearly, from happenings  in and around the North, education is lacking in huge percentage in the North. Alfred Pareto principle (80/20 rule) will lend credence to this argument.

In any case, all hope is not lost. Northern governors should copy from some of their Southern counterparts in this regard, and institute free and compulsory education in their states. Educating massively children of our Northern brethren is a matter of National security. It will help eradicate polio, reduce incidence of almajiri, poverty, militancy, and suicide bombings.

If this trend of apathy to education by the North continue, uneducated poor and migrating Northerners will the the biggest security concern for the highly educated, wealthy Southerners, in the next 20 years.

PoliticsRe: CPC Accuses GEJ Of Stoking Ethnic Division by PointB: 3:57pm On Sep 16, 2011
So when the North was busy parading itself as born to rule, and amassing political offices for themselves, no one dared mentioned North-South divide. Now the tide has turned against them, and Nigeria has decided to entrust power to the minority, it now about stoking ethnic division.

For the avoidance of doubt, Nigeria has only been united by oil, and football. No more no less. There is a limit to which people can endure political shenanigan and when that limit is exceeded, there is a reaction. The loss of political power by the North is an indicator that Nigeria will not accept the 'born to rule' political system it has been bequeathed.

The CPC accusation in itself is capable of stoking ethnic division, and tension. Would they have responded in similar fashion if GEJ had thanked voters of Northern extraction. Where was the CPC when team GEJ thanked the people of South West for their votes:

Anyway, Nigerians are smart enough now to dismiss this sort of political brinksmanship as self serving attention seeking  effort of a malicious and bitter loser - CPC!

PoliticsRe: Electricity Tariff To Rise By Over 50%? by PointB: 11:31pm On Sep 14, 2011
kalokalo:
@ Topic

Even this tariff increase is still not enough to attract private investment in the power sector. The people best placed to set tariff are private power companies based on their cost to generate and distribute this power. The government will never set a cost reflective tariff due to political backlash.

Private firms will set cost reflective tariffs as they are not charities. It is when PHCN successor companies have been privatized that we will really know real prices to pay. The NERC is putting the cart before the horse by setting prices now when the companies are still being run by the government.

When our power sector is being run by private firms; losses and theft, poor billing, bribery will reduce or disappear. The above named ills used to happen when Nitel ran the telecom sector and has virtually disappeared under private telcos. You pay upfront for what you use.
Dauchman:
How does increasing tariff help sort out the light situation in Nigeria when the infrastructure to deliver steady power supply does not exist. Someone mentioned telecoms, if I remember clearly it was even more expensive when we only had 090, so what is the rationale.

I say bring in companies to deliver and generate power supply and let them through market forces set the price and see if people would not pay when they have 24x7 light.

If the proper infrastructure is in place, e.g e-meters, when you don't pay your bills you don't get electricity. That automatically deals with people who refuse to pay their bills and officials who take payments and issue fake receipts. Increasing tariff without the product would only lead to more chaos.
You guys need to understand the problem here. It is a very simple problem, but complex solution. Here is the problem is conversational mode:

Government: Please private investor, come build power station, we have a very large market for power.

Private Investors: Indeed, you have a large market, but your security situation is bad, and tariff is slow, increase tariff so that I can try face the security risk in the worse case.

Government: I will increase it gradually, hence Nigerians will resist it. NLC, and Power Workers are already resisting privatisation

Private Investor: We are in business of profit making. If the tariff is not right, we will not come. Keep increasing it, while we wait. We dont trust your policy trust. We could invest so much only for your NLC to go on strike and ask for reduction.

Government: We are really desperate, pls help. Infact, if you can't build yours, pls buy mine and operate.

Private investor: We will buy yours, but all the same, we need the tariff raised, because we cannot afford invest and wait endlessly to recoup our investment. We are not even sure if your country will still be in 5 years with all these ethno-religious violence.

Government: Well, we will do our best to increase it to the optimal, but mind you, time is running and we cannot continue to wait or beg you to come. So will will start building more power stations on our own, whenever you are ready, let us know.

Private Investors: Then we have an understanding. Let see how this pan out; we are by the way still consulting with our home government.

Guys, that is an illustration of the challenges faced by government in tackling the power problem. Privatization,
while still the best option is fraught with the potential for ransom and blackmail especially in view of the size of funds and maturity time required.

Chicken or egg, which came first?

• Denies plotting to destabilize APGA

The Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha esterday said he has no plan to go back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The governor who denied speculations that he is at loggerheads with 2007 governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state, Chief Martins Agbaso said his immediate preoccupation at the moment is to render quality service to people of Imo State.

Okorocha who stated this while speaking with journalists in Lagos also denied that he was sponsoring crisis in the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). The governor, a former member of the PDP left the party to contest the last governorship election in Imo State on the APGA platform. Recently, there have been rumour that he would return back to his former party.

“It is not true. I have never made a statement that I am going to go back to PDP. I have never said that. It is not even in my thought at all. I am not even thinking about it. A party is simply a vehicle with which a person gets to a place of authority. Once you get there, your primary focus will be the people of that community and no longer just of the party you come from. It is not true that I am going back to PDP or that I am trying to destabilize APGA and go back to PDP,” he told journalists.

Okorocha said there is no crisis in the Imo State chapter of APGA. He said there might be agitation, which is normal in a political party but certainly not crisis. Besides, the governor said he is not aware of the new group that sacked the state executive of the party in the state. According to him “I am not even aware of these factions that you talk about. I am not even aware of it. just came back from a journey and learnt that a group emerged and said they are now the new executive. My primary objective now is to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Imo State.”

Some members of APGA in Imo State had reportedly sacked the party executive in the state led by Mr Cletus Nwaka and inaugurated an interim executive led by Mr Udo Agoha, fuelling speculation that the governor was the brain behind the new executive. Daily Sun reliably gathered that Okorocha on assumption of office as governor of Imo State had written a letter to the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh on July 8,2011 seeking the dissulotion of the party structure in the state. But he did not get a favourable response from Umeh, prompting him to write another letter to the party leader on July 15.The second letter was jointly written with the Anambra State governor, Mr Peter Obi.

Okorocha agrees that he has actually written letters to Umeh seeking the dissolution of the party structure in the state. However, he said it was in line with an early understanding between the two APGA governors and the party’s leader. His words “Regarding the letter you talked about, yes we did. We had an understanding- the two governors and the chairman of the party, to restructure the party , to give it a sense of dignity, to strengthen the party in our states.”

HOS: North-East to replace South-West *As Afolabi retires Sept 29

Written by Olawale Rasheed
Monday, September 12, 2011

The South-Westgeopolitical zoneis set to lose the last major national office it is occupying to the North-East geopolitical zone as the Head of Service, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, is retiring by the end of the month.

Afolabi is the highest ranking official of the South-West origin within the federal set-up after the zone failed in its bid to produce the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The position of Head of Service though a professional one put the occupant in a very vantage position next to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as the number one civil servant in the country.

While both North-East and the South-West zones are the most disadvantaged in the sharing of national political offices, the Nigerian Tribune findings showed that the next Head of Service will come from one of the northeastern states with Adamawa said to be highly favoured.

Already jostling for the position has commenced with permanent secretaries submitting their profiles for consideration and recommendation for elevation into the high profile post.

At the last count, it was learnt that more than seven permanent secretaries had signified their interest in the position, submissions that are reportedly been vetted by a small committee within the office of the outgoing Head of Service.

The scheming however changed last week when the long-awaited posting of federal permanent secretaries was released. Insiders noted that any permanent secretary posted to the office of the Head of Service is sure to be appointed into the coveted office.

PoliticsRe: GEJ Stands By His Single Term Proposition by PointB: 1:33pm On Sep 13, 2011
OAM4J:
I have no regret proposing single term

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Monday that the criticisms that trailed his proposed six-year single term had not made him to regret his action. The President also described the United State Government cables released by whistleblower, WikiLeaks, as “beer parlour gossips”.
Well said Mr. President. Indeed it's only drunks (at beer palours) that will believe someone can stuff $13.5 million in a woman bank even though the highest denomination of dollars in normal circulation is $100.  I laugh in wikileaks.

Jonathan, who spoke during a Presidential Media Chat, in Abuja added that he was a leader committed to the transformation of the country.
Such commitment is evident in the caliber of people co-opted as key minister. I will lose faith if the start leaving.

He said, “I have no regret over the single term proposal. It is to stabilise the polity. Tell me the country that will stabilise its economy without first stabilising its polity? Some analysts say it is corruption that is the country’s problem. But some (also) say from 1960 till date, we have not got any stable polity. I am not saying single tenure alone will bring about a stable polity. But (it is good) because of the circumstances we have in the country now, and in order to reduce tension. “If you elect somebody today as a chairman of a council or a governor, he will do everything to make sure he wins re-election. Within the party, he will want to get a structure that will favour him. That is the first problem we normally have. For them to work with people at the party, this issue of second term should be jettisoned because politics is built on the structures of the party.”

He said transformation could be painful but any leader who wished his country well would not be weighed down by criticisms.

According to him, the proposal is aimed at stabilising the polity against the political unrest usually witnessed every four years.

While maintaining that four years were too short, the President urged his critics to wait for the bill which he said he had not even forwarded to the National Assembly.

“Even in that report, we said seven years. My thinking is that seven years for president, seven years for governor and six years for the national assembly. I think four years are too short; six years better. I have not submitted any bill to the National Assembly. Before people comment on it, they should see the bill. People are only feasting on rumours,” he said.
Even though we have not tried it before, we are willing to try new things and ways of reducing politically induced instability. Let's go there!

The President, who said he could not ignore WikiLeaks because his name had been mentioned, added that there was no iota of truth in what the whistleblower reported about him and his wife. He also implied that he did not believe the criticisms that one of his aides reportedly made against him in the cables.

“The issue of WikiLeaks is like beer parlour gossip. It claimed that my wife was arrested with $13.5m at Lagos airport. You cannot ignore it if your name is mentioned, but you can not say that because WikiLeaks says something you must castigate that person. I am thinking people have different kinds of WikiLeaks.”
The thing with Wikileaks is that some of the revelations are true and some are false. I personally dont believe that someone can stuff $13.5 million in a handbag. So wikileaks is off the track here.

President Jonathan who further said that the endless bloodletting in Jos, the Plateau State capital, was not in any way connected to religion, however, noted that he would not rule out the fact religion played a role in it.

While stressing that no human being, Christian or Muslim, had the power to kill the other, he added that the use of force would be counter-productive in ensuring peace in the state.

He said, “The problem in Jos is not between religious groups. But it (religion) is now playing a role. Religious difference is like a wind that spreads the fire. Nobody has the power to kill, either you are a Christian or a Muslim. Enforcing the law doesn’t bring peace in any place until the people themselves agree to have peace and that is what we want to achieve. We are meeting with the governor of the state and the Chief of Defence Staff on Tuesday.”
Mr. President, the once peaceful land of Jos has become an albatross and a slaughter land. We need action. Maybe the shoot at sight order will bring some sanity.

According to him, there will soon be an improvement in the power sector. However, he said he would not disclose the megawatts to be produced or the amount to be injected to revive the ailing sector.
Well Mr. President we understand that investors complain of low tariff   and consumers  are protesting high tariff without any meaningful improvement hence the slow response to the privatization drive. We accept the fact that government may have to fund new power stations while waiting for private investors to come with systematic increase in tariff to optimum price that will satisfy both consumer and supplier.  Not easy to balance.

Jonathan also said the Federal Government was deeply worried by the security problems dogging the country, but assured Nigerians that the problems would decrease.

“No doubt, the security challenges discourage investors from coming into the country to invest. I can assure Nigerians that the problems will continue to decrease. Both the police, SSS and the military are doing a lot of work and they are up to the task,” he said.
Nuff said on this open sore. Unfortunately, those who dont like your government will continue to create distraction for u. Containment should be the strategy now, as elimination is a long term project since Al Qaeda has joined the fray!

On the issue of a convocation of a Sovereign National Conference as being clamoured by some Nigerians, the President said he supported an avenue where Nigerians could discuss.

He said, “Yes, of course, I support that Nigerians must discuss. Nigerians have been discussing. I have asked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to look into the requests of Nigerians. We are going to set up a committee.

“The areas that are still controversial, we will look at it. We will always encourage discussion because people should have the opportunity to talk. It is when people do not discuss that there is a problem.”
The sooner we talk the better. MEND has demonstrated it ability to handle explosive to maximum effect, OPC dane guns can easily be upgraded to AK47 or even AK2011, MASSOB might be peaceful, but don't forget Igbo boys can import nuclear bombs if they want (or manufacture one should they wish). I dont think the Middle belt are with the North or with anyone for that matter. So please lets talk quick before the big guns start blazing. Boko haram (North) does not have monopoly of violence.

Speaking on the issue of corruption, he said his government would not stop indicted officials from being prosecuted.

“Nigerians have elected me for four years. They should watch what will happen in that direction,” he stated.
lol, you dont have to tell us to watch you. You are the most watched president ever since your lucky days as Bayelsa Deputy Governor.   grin grin grin grin grin grin

Nonsense rant, from a fundamentalist! Who cares what nomenclature (salafists/wahhabis) the bombers go by, we are only interested in the name they scream when they commit their atrocity - allah. I have never seen any christian sect - or even satanic ones for that matter - commit the level of mass murder we witness today in Nigeria, in the name of some god. Besides if it smell like a Islam and behaves like Islam it must be, sect name is just semantics.

Israel is friend to Nigeria whether id.ots like you like it or not. And if you must know, there are rumours making the round that they are in the personal security entourage of the President. That should show your ilk how much Nigerians love and trust them. A wet transformer is waiting for you to hug, if you dont like that.

As for burning the koran, so what? I mean so freaking what? How many bibles have been torn, burnt etc but barely mentioned. For all you know some of those 'holy' Korans might even have been printed in Israel, perhaps pissed upon and exposed to so many obscenity  before been exported to clowns like you. The holiness or otherwise of a book (bible or koran) lies in it content not in itself. But a so-called literate like you is still unable to make that distinction. Burn a million Bibles, the word of the Christian God stands, but burn a single Koran, and the Muslim God sends tremors to his followers demanding blood. And you wonder whyIslam is so preoccupied  with passing off itself as 'a religion of peace.' Peace indeed!
