The term ' Diabetes' has become a household name in Nigeria. Unfortunately, uninformed people believe that it all has to do with SUGAR. As a result of this, they avoid sugar or anything that is sweet completely.

Diabetes Mellitus ( Type 1), sometimes referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, stems from an autoimmune destruction of the beta-cells of the pancreas and a consequent inability to produce sufficient insulin.

Characteristic symptoms are excessive thirst and frequent urination ( Polyuria), intake of large volume of water(Polydipsia) and excretion of large amounts of glucose in the urine (glucosuria).

Try and know all these:

1. It is inadequacy or lack of insulin that causes diabetes mellitus and not just sugar. This inadequacy may be as a result of genetic disorder or autoimmune destruction of beta-cells of the pancreas or mutation. Insulin functions to trigger the movement of GLUT4 glucose transporters to the plasma membrane in muscle and adipose tissue. When it is insufficient in an individual, blood glucose accumulates and results in diabetes mellitus ( Type 1).

2. It is not all sugars that cause diabetes mellitus. Glucose ALONE is the sugar responsible for diabetes. Therefore, many sweet foods that we avoid need not contain glucose and therefore are safe for consumption.

3. Aspartame is a protein ( a tripeptide) which is by far sweeter than glucose. Pharmaceutical industries use it to sweeten some drugs and it is safe for diabetic patients. So, it is not everything that is sweet that poses threat to our health.

Lastly, regardless of our insulin level, it is advisable that we regulate the level of glucose that we consume because even our body chemistry obeys physical laws i.e each time we consume much glucose, insulin synthesis is triggered. This will amount too much pressure on the pancreatic beta-cells and they may get to their elastic limit.

As Nigerians, I intend to make a list of our common diets and their glycemic index in my next post so that we can regulate our glucose intake.

This is not about catholicism. However, the universal church has faced a lot of criticism by the protestants simply because they refuse to reason with catholics open-mindedly.

The bible says, " for every high priest taken from among men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins ( Heb. 5:1-3).

Also, there are certain things in this world we ought to understand on the bases of faith and human experience. For instance, there was no toilet in the bible but we do have toilet today, home movies is nowhere to be found in the bible but we enjoy it today.

On the last day Jesus will ask, I was hungry and you never fed me, in hospital and you never visited, naked and you never clothed me and thirsty and you didn't give me water to drink. He would go ahead to say, in-as-much as you did this to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.

Sometimes people get frustrated when they apply for a job that they possess all the necessary requirements and yet they were not invited for aptitude test.
I've experienced this twice and as a very inquisitive person, I seriously want to know what could be responsible.
Any advice, contribution and critics is welcome.

@ Op, you can't sit comfortably at home and expect people on nairaland to come up with robust modalities on how to invest your hard-earned N5m. I urge you to read books on investments first. Secondly, undergo a serious business research in your locality. There must be a need that ought to be filled in your area. Seize that opportunity and make it happen.
For instance, in-as-much as football viewing center is an unattractive business, I came across one in Zaria which is owned by a Professor. That viewing center can cost N1.5m and almost everybody goes there to watch match because it got class. I'm sure the old man can make at least N5000/match and his presence is not needed.
Also, I know another guy who owns a decent restaurant and in a few years, he became one of the big boys in town. He simply took advatange of the lack of good meals in town, built a modern restaurant and employed people to run it in his absence. However, he visits sometimes to familarize and identify with his workers.
I'm a graduate who is yet to get a job but with N5m, I will create jobs instead.
