Also, if there is referendum among Nigerians at home and those in diaspora. I believe the overwhelming majority of the people, who're people-oriented would voted for disintegration. Just mention Nigeria to any Nigeria parent in the UK and you would probably hate Nigeria for the rest of your life with the response you're going to get, after they kiss their teeth. I still don't know anyone that has something nice to say about the country and most would rather see the country break-up than remain the way it's. And I believe all the ethnic militias springing up everywhere are speaking for the ordinary Nigerians in Nigeria. Those are the poor people, who're the overwhelming population of the country. They're tired of Nigeria and they want a new identity,

Let someone come and fault this.

I don't know why some people don't want to come to terms with reality.

More than 50 years after independence, there's no adequate drinking water or toilets! Nigeria records the highest number of road accident deaths. Let me not waste my time on other similar things jare.

And there appears to be no end in sight!

Well, I don't know nothing about Nigeria but I do know majority of Nigerians that I converse with hate the country. I know no one has anything good to say about the country. I know bigotry is Nigeria and Nigeria is bigotry - and Nigeria is the only country where everything is done based on tribal politics and not ideology.

Nah, the way forward for Africa is the fight against neo-colonialism and colonial borders that amalgamated different people into pseudo-identities that are foreign to them. How many people would choose Nigeria over their ethnic group? Save that pretentious and simplistic crap for the birds.

Prof Africa, can you please tell me what the Nigerian identity is about? That's one question I've been trying to find an answer to since I became proper acquainted with Nigeria in my late teens. What's Nigeria and what's the Nigerian identity?

I await your reply. wink

Every single word you put up there is meaningful and deep.

You have posted incontrovertible assertions and probing questions. In their hearts of hearts, the so-called leaders of Nigeria will buckle under those questions.

It is time to quit being pretentious. It pays no one.

Pukka,it seems you did not read my post well. Okay let me rephrase what I said. I believe in the unity and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. However it is not for me to tell you or others why Nigeria should stay united as that is the status of Nigeria today. It is for you and other separatists to make the case for disintegration. And NO you cannot sensibly do that merely by highlighting perceived shortcomings in the present set-up.
You must make the case as to why and how disintegration would positively impact upon your own region or state, as well as other states of the federation.
For example in the UK today,Scottish nationalist leader Alex Salmond is attempting to sell the idea of how an independent Scotland would positively benefit the Scottish people. It is left to his opponents the Unionists to pick holes in his arguments. That is the template you can use to state your case. I am waiting.

I have used my own template rather than Salmond's type of template.

The reasons you asked for are contained in my post before this. Fault them.

Let me repeat this, the regions made more progress under the regional system than under the present system. Yes or no? No one can accurately predict what will happen in the new units, this is why we have to rely on assumptions and analyze the present. One thing is also clear - Nigeria appears stuck. This reason alone is enough to press for a break up. Don't also forget that you've not told us the benefits of remaining in Nigeria or the practical ways to unstuck the country.

Even Salmond premised his argument on what 'Scotland could be'. Hear him: "If we vote no, Scotland stands still. A once-in-a-generation opportunity to follow a different path, and choose a new and better direction for our nation, is lost.”

A lot of negativism there. But I am curious as to how Nigeria breaking up would benefit you.
Meanwhile its not for your adversaries who are pro-unity to state why Nigeria should stay united but for you lot in the separatist camp to state the POSITIVE case for disintegration. Then we can have an intersting debate

I earlier stated that I am not campaigning for a break up but I am not averse to granting freedom or separation to those who desire it.

How does that amount to negativity?

Is it negativity to grant the freedom of self determination to human beings?

How has Nigeria being together benefited Nigerians via a vis the resources at the disposal of the country? A few looters have benefited though. Was I wrong when I stated that a company that fails to post positive returns to its shareholders faces liquidation? Have you been following global and continent's ratings on Nigeria?

If there is a break up, would the citizens of the different parts be poorer or have a lower standard of living than they currently have?

Do you deny the fact that Nigeria as a concept has become an orphan? Most people (not all) would rather identify with their tribes or regions. D you deny the fact that an increasing number of people are getting detached from Nigeria? You can see this in the number of voters and when some people dismiss the Nigeria debate with 'I don't want to discuss Nigeria jare'. Is this not true?

There are really no 'Nigerians' but there are Hausas, Igbos, Yorubas, Ijaws etc.

Do you deny the fact that tribalism has become a clog in the wheel of progress?

Do you deny the fact that tribes now defend their corrupt kinsmen and celebrate their mediocres because they are in Nigeria. Do you deny the fact that they won't be able to do this in a small region?

Do you deny the tribalism on Nairaland and in the real world as recently played out in Anambra? Soyinka and Northern governors were stoned in PH. Obi told El Rufai to go back to the North.

Breaking up might not eliminate ethnicity but it would greatly reduce it. When one complains about the massive oil theft that's going on, many Niger Deltans (who should be on the forefront of the agitation) ask you 'is it your oil?'

Do you deny the fact that corruption will continue and the average House of Reps member will continue to go home with N182m every year? Who is going to stop these?

So far, successive governments have not been able to implement true federalism, state police, etc. Can't all these be done without a National Conference. Even the planned Conference has no-go areas.

Do you deny the fact that all parts of Nigeria are not enjoying Nigeria?

The Western Region brought television to Africa in 1959 (less than 20 years after it got to Britain) but today we are paying to watch television brought by a South African company - DSTV. Some people also believe that certain parts of the South East are potential 'Japan of Africa'.

Is the trend of things likely to reverse in the foreseeable future? If yes, how?

Why can't we give separation a try?

What other PRACTICAL ideas do you have that can make Nigeria work?

Please tell me, in what ways is Nigeria excelling compared to its peers?

Try and address all the parts of this post as I had earlier mentioned some of them. I would be happy to see this 'negativity' debunked by your 'positivity'.

shymexx: I also like how Pukkah's mentality, and luvmijeje's mentality to an extent, have changed about one-Nigeria. The country is doomed and it can never grow beyond its current status. It's a failure!!

Those that are against the break up don't have strong reasons.

Some of them believe that big size is desirable although they've not told us how the big size of Nigeria has benefited Nigerians.

Some of them think that the looters of Nigeria won't let go; they forget that this argument is defeatist and is like resigning to one's fate.

A few of them believe in the conspiracy theory that the US is the one behind calls for a break-up but they've not told us how the US has been doing it or if US is also the one trying to break Scotland off the UK.

All in all, none of the groups has been able to tell us the practical way forward amidst worsening living conditions of our citizens. Clearly, Nigeria continues to defy solutions.

The essence of a nation is to benefit its citizens. Any nation or country that cannot do that is useless and unfit for purpose. If it were a company, it would be wound up as any company that fails to give returns (consistently) to its shareholders is on its way to liquidation.

This is not an emotional matter. We are dealing with facts.

1. Oyedepo, who had warned about the break-up?

2. Primate Olabayo, who actually predicted it?

On a second thought....I agreed with you.

You see, many of the policy makers and Nigerians themselves have run out of ideas to make Nigeria work. All the ideas that have worked in other places seem to fail as soon as they get here. All the countries that were Nigeria's peers in the 60s have left the country behind.

Rather than unbundle the rusty behemoth called Nigeria or achieve an uncommon transformation that can banish poverty and elevate the living standards of the people, the government is selfishly and mischievously welding the faulty contraption together. For example, why should the Jonathan National Conference say that the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable. Na by force person dey take marry?

I really don't know why the peoples of Nigeria are being forced and compelled to live together.

The Nigerian experiment has not worked and the forced union is yet to produce good fruits. All the regions of the so-called Federation are screaming of marginalization and most people have lost confidence in the system. Every now and then, we hear of threats from all quarters. Is this how to live?

Our Human Development Indices remain low and many of our citizens are stuck in poverty. Many countries are rejecting Nigerians both within and outside Africa.

Isn't it funny and strange that we have freedoms of movement and association enshrined in the constitution but the same constitution says we can't leave the union? So where is the freedom of association? Where's the freedom of expression?

Why can't people determine where and how to live; or who to live with?

Who owns Anambra State University? The State... That's why Anambra State students can attend school at a lesser fee because the taxes of their parents is what built the school.

Tax payers money is to be used for the benefit of the common interest of the public like build Public Schools, Public Libraries, Public water supply, Public Roads, Public interests not finance privately owned institutions and businesses.

If he can give Private schools Public money, then all privately owned business should also get the same free money.

It's either you don't understand what government is and what public funds are meant to be used for or you just need Jesus.

If Nigeria was a sane society, Gov. obi should be facing an impeachment committee right now. That's how he used state funds to buy SUVs for chiefs. Do you even know that the churches that own these schools don't pay taxes? Do you know how many roads he could have built with 200million Naira? Or even provide a loan facility to the many Anambra state small scale business owners that could use this money to not only expand their businesses and employ more Anambra state youths, but also repay the money to the government with a premium?

It's illegal to use public funds to fund private entities, period.

It's like Jonathan giving public money to Oyedepo to finance his mega churches or to Dangote to finance his business.

Did anyone force the owners of the universities to open them or why are you making it sound like government must give them 'awoof' money? Are they no collecting school fees? Are they no making profit?

I would have commended him if he had given a loan of N500,000 each to 400 struggling traders at say 5% interest rate per annum.

I would not have condemned the move if the N200m to the two universities was a long term loan or to be used to train Anambra indigenes FREE OF CHARGE for a stated number of years. In which case, it would be like an upfront payment from the state which the schools can use to expand or improve their capacity. Even here, there are a number of bolts to be well-tightened and firm agreements to be made or guarantees given.
