Whatever be the case, the horse has bolted from the stable and things have fallen apart. In simple terms, the damage is already done and reactions and counter reactions have started. |

It is of utter disappointment that some Igbos on this forum see nothing wrong with it and they even praise arthur eze for making such callous statement. Every line you have up there is true. EBK2: But how are we going to get selfless, strong and visionary leaders? The selfish and greedy politicians have hijacked totally hijacked the electoral system. Votes never count nor are counted. Most of the Good, capable and competent men and women have given politics a wide berth. A good sign that people have given up is the percentage of registered voters compared to the number of adults. Also compare the number of actual voters at elections to the number of registered voters. The figures are dismal and worrisome. Nigerians have lost interest in Nigeria. However, Nigerians still do have some level of passion for their regions. For now, I think there is no practical way to install credible leaders. |

The poor man is in serious trouble in this country. To make matters worse for the hapless masses, there's no help in sight. Politicians waste money anyhow and are driven by selfish interest. There is no adequate drinking water or sanitation. Yet these leaders continue to squander money. This is the same state where a market went up in flames recently and some of the traders attempted to jump inside the raging fire. https://www.nairaland.com/1483088/fire-guts-onitsha-market-traders Politicians! Secularist: You're right. I think this advert is not for the regular people. The target may be the same corrupt politicians. I'm confident that the number of honest Nigerians that can afford a N70m terraced house from a developer without a mortgage facility is very negligible. Many of those honest ones that can afford it would rather build on their own so as to have more space. But for the looters and thieves, anything goes. 6 Likes |

anonimi: ^^^^^^ Just as I admitted up there, the problem with Nigeria could sometimes be so confusing and perplexing. But I'm sure the problem is very fundamental and getting more complex with each passing day. On the 'free pass' or shielding that people are giving their local thieves and looters, what comes to my mind is that the people are indirectly saying that they are fed up with the 'Nigerian arrangement' and of course, something must be done about that arrangement in order to get 'Nigeria' working. Two options come to mind: 1. A return to true fiscal and political federalism. Let's have a true federation in every sense of it. The federal government should bother only about common issues like currency, army, foreign policy, etc. The regions should have total control on their resources while they pay a token to the central purse to maintain it. The federation as we have it now is very faulty and has failed. Why is the FG worrying about water, housing, intra city roads, power, local policing, schools, etc. As you can see, the FG has put so much load on itself. Why should robberies and housebreaking taking place at the same time in Saki, Gusau, and Eket be the headache of someone that is sitting in Abuja? 2. Break up the country and let people or the ensuing nations go their separate ways. If they want to come together again, after staying apart, the terms can be negotiated. And if they don't want one another again, the new nations would still be within West Africa sub region with free movement of persons and cargo. Honestly, I don't know the practical way to achieve this peacefully and quickly. No matter what happens, something fundamental must happen to the current structure of Nigeria. Honestly, the people have become fed up and lost faith in the country. |

Politics / Re: Nigeria Economy Expands To 6.81% In Third Quarter by Pukkah: 6:18pm On Nov 19, 2013 |
anonimi: I share your sentiments but the way Nigerians are now, I doubt if there can be any genuine, unsponsored anti-bad governance protest by the people. The generation of genuine activists is dying off and Nigerians have become sharply divided and apathetic. People also keep quiet because of the backlash of participating in or leading protests. Whistle blowers are not safe and activists have become endangered so everyone is minding his own business. If you removed the anonymity of Nairaland you can be sure that many people would stop criticizing the government. A friend of mine sometime ago put up a Facebook message that was critical of the government of the day and before the end of that day, several people called/contacted him to remove it. Some people even begged and pleaded with him to remove it. So I ask, how practical is genuine activism today? This is why the situation in Nigeria is getting irksome, exasperating, complex and even confusing. If we say people should protest, who will lead them? If they are led, who will prosecute the offenders or suspects? The politicians at all levels have become very wasteful and opportunistic. Those benefiting from the rot will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo. The people that are dissatisfied with the system are afraid, scared or uninterested. For all you know, there may be more than meets the eyes in the Jigawa protest and the case of family ostracism in Ogwashi Uku. Things have got that bad. On another thought, it appears to me that people have lost faith in the Nigeria contraption and what they want is their 'own area' or region or country. This might be why there seems to be a deliberate effort on the part of many people to bring down the house and kill off the contraption. |

anonimi: I agree that so much attention is on the FG and I want other tiers of government to also be held accountable. But have you asked why this is so? 1. The FG takes 52% of the federal revenue. The Ministry of Petroleum Resources is also under the FG. Of course you know what this means. 2. The FG-led law enforcement agents are the ones that are constitutionally empowered and funded to fight corruption including in the states and LGAs. With the way Nigeria is constituted, what do you expect the people to do apart from usual talking? |

berem: are you talking of that? What of an election of 35 state governors for NGF chairman which some fools said it was rigged in favour of the Amaechi faction? You are talking of 500,00 voters. Smh Things are getting worse. The Anambra election was supervised by thousands of INEC officials, policemen and observers and spanned two days. Yet, it has been declared inconclusive. Something very fundamental is wrong with Nigeria. At this rate, something has to give. Things can't just continue this way. |

Sadly, things have fallen apart for Nigeria. Terrorism is taking a tap root and the incidences of kidnapping, armed robbery are not abating. The USA has designated Boko Haram as a terrorist group and armed robbers stormed a hospital the other day to ask for a day old baby. Frauds continue to rock private and public establishments as the massive, unprecedented oil theft continues unchecked. The Police seem to have given up and EFCC is on vacation. Nigeria stands tall when it comes to deaths from terrorism, malaria, typhoid, cholera, road accidents, maternal mortality and children out of school, street hawkers, street beggars, street mad men/women, etc. There is no adequate supply of water to Nigerians and government appears helpless. Teaching hospitals don't have blood or ambulances and proper toilet facilities are uncommon across the country. No state/city across the country can boast of adequate drinking water while the environment is noisy, dusty and dirty. Access to sanitation is poor and access to electricity or good roads is very limited. The education system is lying prostrate. Nigeria has become a giant slum. Unemployment rate is sky rocketing and Nigerian graduates do menial and degrading jobs both at home and in abroad. Nigerians have become laughing stock and endangered species in Europe, Americas, 'cancer' in India and even hated in Africa - Ghana, Benin, South Africa. UK is even contemplating funding a prison in Nigeria because of the high number of inmates in British prisons. Life expectancy remains very low and many people have heaped many aspirations which are the basic responsibilities of a good government on God, hence the hike in the number of religious centres. Yeah, things have fallen apart and I think the word 'Nigeria' has become a joke. Nigerians themselves have become very divided and hopelessly disunited, except during fleeting and short moments of football. A very dangerous dimension is when people shield corrupt citizens and suspects of fraud just because of mother tongue. This is a loud affirmation by the people that Nigeria has failed and they have lost confidence in the system/contraption. Nigeria as an experiment has failed but the people should be given another chance under different platforms. Governments at all levels and at all times have failed! The Nigeria idea has not worked. This is the time to seriously consider the break-up of the country...may be, just may be the people of the new nations would be serious about nation-building. 4 Likes |

By the way, the UN is just saying this to call attention to the poor living conditions in he blighted areas of the world. It is in our interest to look inwards rather than fight with the figure. eluquenson: Fallacy, how on earth will that be A proper toilet facility means a toilet that is safe and clean. The toilets in many places fail the 'clean' test either because there is little or no water or the people are generally dirty. The toilets in the halls of our Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos are not even clean! The toilets in many places fail the 'safe' test because of their location or their nature. Some people, especially girls and women, are also embarassed to use them. Even for men, many of the so-called toilets are not convenient/comfortable. With this in mind, how many Nigerians do you think have access to proper toilet facilities? |

Guyman02: This people wan kill us with statistics? Are you doubting the fact that development is low in Nigeria or there's widespread poverty? UCH Ibadan does not have blood or ambulance to transport patients!!! The Water Corporation in many states manufacture 'pure water' or sachet water!!! For so many reasons, policemen do not enjoy the confidence of the citizens. This is even a story for another day. The 100m figure may not be 'accurate' as it is just a statistical measure, but I tell you, millions of people lack proper toilet facilities. How can people who don't have/can't afford enough water for drinking have proper toilet facilities? The raw statistics on under-development in Nigeria is damning! The country is fast on the way to failure!!! |
