Car Talk / Re: Ban On Importation Of Tokunbo Cars: What You Should Know by pumping777(m): 6:54am On Nov 19, 2013 |
I find this car discussion interesting so let me chip in. I don't agree that you cannot compare Jap cars to German cars. it all depends on the brand and model. From a durability perspective, jap cars are far more durable than German cars. The most durable and reliable cars are Japs by far. Honda, Toyota and Subaru will beat BMW, Benz or Audi in durability or reliability. If you check various lists of most reliable cars, it is typically dominated by Toyota and Honda. You will hardly ever find a single German car in list. I am not making the point that Jap cars are better than German cars but I am referring to the issue of durability here. Volkswagen is not a premium brand and the pricing is comparable to Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Mazda. By the way, it is not very reliable and resale value is not that good compared to the Japs. Lexus is premium Jap and price is comparable to BMW and Benz so here also it does not hold that German cars are more expensive. A Lexus is far more expensive than a Volkswagen. I don't understand why we should compare these car makers in any case as one is a premium brand (Lexus) and the other is not. The cheapest Lexus saloon is $35k which is more than double the starting price of a VW Jetta (Same Class). In the same way, Infinity and Acura are way more expensive that equivalent VW models. Most German brands are premium (Audi, BMW, Mercedes) and we have to compare them to other premium brands (Lexus, Cadillac, Infinity, Acura etc.) and the prices are comparable. Back to prices we should look at starting prices as configuration can make the difference. Starting prices in the US. Each row is for different models in the same class. VW Jetta: $16k Honda Civic:$17k Toyota Corolla: $16k Lexus IS: $35k BMW 3 Series: $32k VW Golf: $18k Toyota Matrix: $19k VW Passat: $20k Honda Accord:$21k Toyota Camry: $22k Lexus GS: $47k BMW 5 Series: $49k Golf GTI is a performance model and as rightly pointed out, is more expensive than a Camry but this is not fair comparison as Camry also has a 3.5L model which can be more expensive than a GTI. Still a new Golf GTI starts at $24k so it is not that much more expensive than a regular Camry anyway. I just could not help but comment on this one. I hope I made some sense. 1 Like |

utotomi6: Abeg, no vex. In fact, Babangida did not accept the IMF loan. Nigerians opposed it and he went with the popular opinion. I believe he already decided not to take it before the debate anyway. Instead, they implemented SAP which was recommended by the world bank but sold to us a being home grown and which in fact had conditions not any different from what the IMF was seeking to give us the loan. They had to do something because of the N20B loan weighing us down. I just thought I'd point it out because this incorrect information is out there. I also read an article recently by a Naija Ph.D holder in Houston, Texas that made the same statement in a publication. |

Naija o. We sabi proud against all odds even when we should just chill and reflect. Who was asking the question again? Are most 419 letters from Nigerians?? Haba. Abeg, if we don't want people to link us with 419, then we should stop being proud of it. When we are dancing "Yahoozee" and "I go chop your dollar" the tin dey sweet. We can hail ourselves, but others cannot acknowledge it. Everybody now knows that Naijas are the king pins of 419 business. It is a terrible thing but it's all good so long no one complains. |

I think the end of this week (already gone) and next week are the times to re-enter all these stocks that have been hammered by the bears. I will expect a mini bull run towards the end of next week for short termers but this will not last long at all. So the option is to try to time this, which is quite difficult, or hold on to your money for the next 3 months or so and siddon look. |

jonyjoscom: My man, I really feel for you. The mistake has already been done, so first one has to salvage what one can. You have accepted the Transcorp issue since you cannot prove you cancelled the order, so accept this. Regarding DSR, they must reverse the transaction and bear the cost. This is not as difficult as it seems. Like I complained in my post on Cashcraft, they bought N1m worth of Fidelity for me instead of selling. They have reversed the transaction and they bore all the costs. Simple enough. I don't see why you will not insist on this. I don't know how this plays out regarding how much time you have but I don't see any option. It makes no sense to sell this and bear the cost on your own. Please don't take this lightly. Let them know you will take this as high as necessary if they are not being helpful. Whatever the case, you need to do your best to meet up with your obligations to your bankers. They should not have to take the brunt for the innefficiencies of Cashcraft. Good luck. |

nazzyon: It would have been a good sign with the bulls but in this market reversals may not be sustained. Examples. Niwicable, ABC, UTC, Dunlop and others. Some folks abandoned selling Bigtreat because they could not sell before the price dropped too low. Another 5% or 10% may get them interested again. |
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by pumping777(m): 9:44pm On Apr 16, 2008 |
cj2008: That is too much load my bro. I will advice you start selling like 5% a day if you are already in the green. The result is taking too long and folks have become impatient. I already said if the result is not out this week, I'm cashing out. I also like Fo2's theory that the results may not be released at the peak. However, if you bought at th low of N21.50 like I did, getting out is not a bad idea really. |
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by pumping777(m): 4:48pm On Apr 16, 2008 |
I think the market is trending down generally and this 2nd stage started last week after the bearish run of last month. I maintain an imaginary portfolio with a crosss section of NSE stocks. I use it to guage the mood of the market. I learnt this after the bearish run of last month. Even though I exited early last month, it was not early enough. I was hit with a net loss of about 9% on the stocks I just bought that month. This time around, I exited last week with my 17% from the stocks I bought when I exited with the 9% loss. However, I still maintain a dummy portfolio for this. If I had kept the stocks till today (and a good performer like Beta Glass is 30% of the portfolio), I will only be up only about 5% today, down from 17% just last week. This is the time to stand back and look small. Many suppports have already been broken and may become the new resistance prices. See Afribank, Aiico, Ikeja Hotels. The prices today would have been more than juicy two months ago, but today, being careful is key. |
