FALSE AGAIN.
The MongoDb project I handled for that client paid me that much, and it lasted for just three weeks.
Clients are willing to cough out that much if they see you’re the absolute best, and without you, their project dies.

Most freelancers are desperate, and will take pittances thrown at them.

Indians and Pakistanis the usual suspects.
Hmmm ok, I can see some high rates but not in my field, but just 2 above 5k$ , I guess there's more to be done. Thanks

That changes my view on high rate on Upwork

BusinessRe: Upwork Thread (Questions/Help/Advice) by qtguru(m): 8:01pm On Feb 14, 2023

is this a generalized view or a personal one?

Because I’ve had clients who’ve paid way more than $5000 for a single gig.

Matter of fact, my last gig of 21k for January was achieved with one client.

I am particularly choosy when it comes to clients, and I know low-ballers and tight fisted clients when I see one.

Go figure.
Those clients are an exception, the ratio of clients paying that much on Upwork is extremely rare compared to LinkedIn, it's why most freelancers do both, if anyone makes 21k on Upwork from one client then kudos to him/her

Herein lies your answer
Yes for entry-level people Upworks is good, but if you have experience LinkedIn is better, No Upwork gig is paying you 5000$ monthly.

Am pretty lost in this write up. Can you please explain in plain simple English what really happened?
So Codementor is a site, where you get paid to teach, there are some accounts created for Andela people, which allow payment to be made to Andela tutors based on trust.

a Nigerian used the account to act like he was teaching someone else, but he was teaching his other account so he can get paid as a tutor when Codementor noticed it, they closed the Andela account, and Andela decided not to use the Codementor account because of a bad reputation.

Nigerians will shock you o! We call it “sharpness” but it’s very disgusting how we always look for loopholes in systems to exploit. Yesterday, I was at a Lebanese owned supermarket and they had recently employed a Floor/Operations Manager who was Indian. I had a brief chat with one of the owners why they would hire foreigners for that kind of position. He told me in conc. pidgin “Nobi say we no like to hire una o, but wetin my eye don see from Naija Operations Managers my mouth no go fit talk. If I leave Naija Floor manager here, this supermarket go collapse in 6 months”
Some Nigerians don't have integrity, it's why the few that have, always succeed

Qtguru

I’m interested on what the Nigerians did. Feel free to ignore if it will put you at risk
Arc which was formerly Codementor, Andela has an account for people that you could use or so, someone was using it to teach his other account and basically paying himself, Codementor blocked Andela's account, which prompted Andela to close Codementor accounts or so, it was shameful and embarrassing for us.

Andela provides food, snack, and even laptops for the students, that's a lot of money.

FALSE.
It does and that's not even something debatable, LinkedIn jobs offer relocation and more pay, if you don't know this, then you will be the only one not knowing then again I'm Tech so we might be an exception field.

Is upwork now a scam, or just hard for newbies to get job, I started upwork December last year, up still now I have not been able to get any job there. Almost exhausted my connect in writing world catching proposal but nobody has invite me for interview nor to talk of hired
It's not a scam, I get gigs and it's not a fulltime thing for me. A lot of people just don't research into platforms. Most just assume they'll register and apply just like that, you have to possess a relevant skills, a good portfolio. Also good communication, what helps me is that I take each project very serious and customer centric. Getting gigs hard, but in my case I always make a reference to previous projects. Awesome Screen Recorder is my tool, so I have videos of previous extensions built to prove my competence.

For your field you will have to find out an appropriate format for showcasing competency.

I think LinkedIn has more chances than Upwork these days.

I suspect it was all a front.
Andela's early investors were people like Mark Zuckerberg and others who invested in the company to train software engineers from low income countries. After the first few years when the company gained stability, they threw away that model to hiring only experienced devs for contract work, meanwhile there were reports the funds that were meant for teaching and feeding aspiring software engineers was cut after the first year.
I can't blame them, I work there and it's hard to pay Junior Engineers who are not making a profit, Andela pays you to learn, and some Junior devs didn't want to be assigned, so they can get paid on the bench and still do their side-gigs. No company goes out of its way to lose money especially not Americans, with senior Engineers, you get quality service at a lower cost.

Also if you knew what some Nigerians did, you'd be embarrassed, not even the Ghanaians or other African countries committed such. so I wouldn't go blaming Andela just like that.

Few years back, a lot of people who wanted to be software engineers were all applying to Andela and getting trained. Andela was the talk of the Town.

One thing I loved about Andela was that it really tried in training new software engineers for free.

But after the massive layoffs from Andela. Nobody seems to know what's going on with them again.

Are they still actively recruiting or actively training new software engineers?
But truth be told, I like their business models. They really tried helping people to get jobs. But all we hear now is crickets.

Do we have still have companies like Andela in Nigeria?

What really happened to Andela?
They run remotely now outside Nigeria, they mostly recruit senior devs

So far so good, Spring is not as difficult as I thought. Infact I m wondering why people don't use it much as compared to Nodejs. It's way more performant and scales way more Better!
See it's easier than Laravel as far as I am concerned. Plain Old Java and nothing else

So collecting money from different guys is ur own definition of doing well
That's a major turnoff for me, I always force money on my babe, cuz women need alot of money for care and all, babe, mumsi or "sister". So as a guy taking care of your babe comes natural but to bring it up like that makes the relationship transactional.

You are still coming back to my point. Because the javascript you write for the browser is different from that of the backend , that’s why I am making my arguments. The V8 that chrome uses is not exactly the same V8 that node uses. For example, nodejs V8 understands the keyword “require”, chrome V8 doesn’t. And when you are looking to develop a backend in node , you ask for nodejs developer and not javascript developer. I am just making these arguments because of the newbie that being thrown into confusion when they are told that nodejs is not a programming but a runtime without an explanation of what a runtime is. The guy above that’s asked me to go to google that I asked what a runtime is has still not replied me.

ProgrammingRe: Nodejs Is A Language Not A Runtime. by qtguru(m): 4:32pm On Feb 10, 2023
Javascript on Node is Scripting, you can't access the DOM, BOM API in Node, just like how Android Java doesn't have almost the full set as Java SE ( pls correct me o, I might be outdated)

Ok , agreed that nodejs is runtime environment. But if someone is writing an application using nodejs, What language do we say they are coding in?
V8 is Javascript Engine, so Javascript, I think you're looking at it the wrong way. It should be what syntax is used to talk to Node.

Because Java too can parse JS (Rhino) but C++ is faster I hope it helps
ProgrammingRe: Nodejs Is A Language Not A Runtime. by qtguru(m): 2:43pm On Feb 10, 2023
JavaScript is used to talk to V8, just the same way JavaScript talks to Chrome Native API via Chrome API, It's a runtime no matter how much I see it. I say that because remember V8 is JavaScript Engine, meaning a C++ that can not only speak JS but can translate JS into Native, I won't call NodeJS a language. it's how ReactNative can talk to NativeModules and NativeModules talk to JS back. They are just using JS because it's easier to write, it could have been done in PHP Syntax or Dart, just like how the Android framework uses Java to communicate with native.

I could be wrong though, but NodeJS as a language nah, that's just V8
