okunoba:
@Naijanile. u have said it all. OAU students can`t be good thinkers, dem just de follow, follow the corrupt SU leaders.
If you have not been there you would never understand. This is a school which is surrounded by hills, mountains and great bushes, but has never been taken over by cultists, a school where you can walk safely anytime of the day, read anywhere you like and go anywhere you want all this was achieved not by the school authorities but by the vigilant students.

This is a school where you can't just harass any student, in fact in my time which was quite recent if you lay your hands on a Lady, you are liable to ferefe sisi.
This is a school where for just 20,000 naira or so misappropriation of funds the student union president was almost lynched, and several union leaders have been impeached and beaten for embezzlement of paltry funds.

This is a school where basic amenities like light, water is fairly constant because the students would not allow themselves been shortchanged.

This is a school where fro m the day of resumption hundreds of students flocks to reading areas when exams is still many months away.
This is a school where the students have been making waves all over the world and in the several fields just like other schools. Every school use the term Great, Great UItes, Great Akokites etc but we make the loudest noise and we are very proud to say it, so ifsome others can proclaim their greatness as much as we do, we would not apologise for our behavior.

And even in those times past where people claim the glories exist, there was a whole lot of activism, in fact Fela mentioned it in one of his songs ' craze world be dat, where dem kill de students for zaria and ife'.

While all that has been said, just like with evry other movements and protests, the protests are often overdone and the student unions allow selfish and ideological jargons get in the way of reasoning, and OAU students don't shut the schools, its the School authority that use it tojust punish students and they see it as an easy way out of a crisis situation.

I believe strongly in God, but its so difficult to believe those who say they are his 'men'. Now if he really is a 'man of God', that means we must all see evidence in a short while that God is frustrating the plans of the politicians. That is in a year or 2 all politicians or a substancial number of them would not be able to embezzle money because God has frustrated their plans. This action should be very evident to all.

Now if this did not happen, if a couple of months/years we still see politicians successfully embezzling money brazenly, what does this tell me about Brother Adeboye, for me i would only draw two inference, either Adeboye is a charlatan and does not receive any such revelation or he did receive a revelation from God but God was not strong enough to act or could not stop the corruption even though he had said he would,

Well i know who i will dismiss easily as a fraud.

Members of the super eagles are professionals and should be able to handle booing from anybody including their own supporters. The Fans have sacrificed a lot to watch the game but the players are doing their Job, so they should be able to take the slag.

Lagos Fans wants to watch a good game, even if we lost, we want to see that the team is good and has prospects, so we don't take kindly to a mediocre team, if the opposing team is giving us good value for our trouble, we would cheer the opponents.

The phenomenon of cheering eeeh, eeeh, eeeeh can only be applied to a performing team, there is no way you can boo a performing team, when he is dribbling, and running around you all over the place, it would only sound stupid, when an opponent score, you can only keep quiet, you can't boo him, that would be ridiculous.

The supporters club can still be playing and dancing and cheering the Eagles, but they should not expect such from Lagos Fans, They Love the super Eagles so much that whenever the eagles play below par, they would always be booed.

Just 'arrange' the guy, the police won't do shit and they would eventually release him, The guy is a rapist, arrange some boys with as little as 10k to teach him some lesson, fry his balls, castrate his thingy, and a whole lot of things that would be enough deterrent, well thats what i would do if someone did that to my sister,

, but then they were lovers so that means she has lost some moral rights to go full scale on him, so open up to your husband and confess your sins, he also does not have moral justification so be utterly mad, the Guy should at least first defend his wife, deal with the guy and then they pick the pieces of their marriage and stitch them,

I changed from Glo to airtel and i have enjoyed them immensely, but you have to make upto like 150 - 200 naira calls or more to really get the benefit and some days you don't really do, so they cart away their N36 for 1st minute.

I read today, etisalat is out with 25k per sec and with N5 daily charge, so that makes it quite cheap and you don't have to try and make several calls to balance out like Airtel,

Then MTN is out with Magic number, with N250 monthly charge you can call a particular number 24/7 absolutely free, i have an MTn sim already, am thinking of getting another sim, to call freely the two women that matters most in life, thats going to reduce my call cost by close to 70%,

Its getting crazier and am loving it,
Culture › Re: What Is The History Behind The Gorgeous [edo] Bini's Hair Beads? by rabzy: 9:37am On Jan 17, 2011
Beads have been worn in Africa long before the coming of the Europeans and they are made from different materials, glass, stone corals etc.
The glass beads and corals were most likely introduced into Bini by the Portuguese and possibly before them by Northern traders, who would have gotten them from Arab merchants from the Mediterranean. Corals could possibly have been mined at the sea port at ughoton by the Binis.

The corals are known as Ivie and Ekan. People bear them as names now, and it is given to show how much you value the child. My Aunty gave birth to her first child after 10 years of marriage and she named the girl Ivie.

The stone beads could also have been popular in the Kingdom before the coming of the Europeans, but Oba Ewuare turned gave beads the Honor and Royal importance it later commanded.

A little Bit of Coral beads history is below:

Ivie and Ekan are members of the Coral beads family. CORALS ( Phylum coelenterata ) or ( Cnidaria ) are mined from coral stones in oceans and polished as jewelry. EKAN looks like a stone and is grayish in color. IVIE is another specie of coral beads, an important type of jewelry worn by Edo chiefs. This kind is described as precious coral. It has a hard core that can be polished to bring out beautiful red, rose, or pink colors. Precious corals seems to grow in the bush-like formations in the Mediterranean Sea and the Sea of Japan. Oba Ewuare in the 1400's A.D. is credited in oral tradition as the man who brought them to Benin when he stole them from the " goddess of the Sea " at Ughoton ( Gwatto ). Since Ughoton was the gateway to Europe in those days, the White man, specifically the Portuguese and the Spaniards may have brought them to Benin. The Portuguese influence on Edo culture is very great especially in the area of costume and clothing. The use of Ivie and Ekan is controlled by the Oba of Benin. There are some shapes you can not wear without being a chief. Corals beads used in Edo speaking areas are very different from those got from the North of Nigeria, in Yoruba land and the Eastern part of Nigeria.

It is historically documented that some chiefs have been barred by Royal Edict, from wearing any Ivie or Ekan as a punishment. An example is Chief Oliha of Benin. It was a punishment for collaborating with the Attah of Igala in IDAH, about 1500's A.D when the Idah soldiers invaded Benin City. Oba Esigie and his queen mother IDIA led the Edo soldiers to victory. The Portuguese soldiers fought on the side of Benin. Oba Akenzua II in the 1940's seized the bearded head gear and most of the beads belonging to Chief Okorotun, the then Iyase of Benin for being disloyal and arrogant. He also took his ADA from him. When an Oba of Benin sends a bead or beads to anybody, it means simply one thing, " you are being made a chief " whether you like it or not. To refuse to accept a bead sent to you from the palace is unpardonable sin. You have in one way or another become an " OGHIAN OBA "-the Oba's enemy.

Cheers.
Culture › Re: What Is The History Behind The Gorgeous [edo] Bini's Hair Beads? by rabzy: 9:13am On Jan 17, 2011
During the fifteenth century, stone beads were developed in the kingdom of Benin (known today as Nigeria) with the encouragement of Oba Eware the Great. Benin craftsmen became experts at carving stone beads coveted by the royal court. Beads were considered so important in old Benin that a member of the house of Iwebo (the keepers of the royal wardrobe) was sent by the oba to invest a worthy subject with beads. No titled chief was allowed to visit oba unless he wore his necklaces, and if he lost them, he could be punished by death. The beaded regalia of the oba became increasingly elaborate until, by the seventeenth century, entire costumes of coral beads, including skirts, shirts, and crowns became the official royal dress.

From what my mom told me, the reall coral beads were sourced from deep rivers and therefore were scarce and expensive, so it is not surprising that its the nobles that got decked in them in all its full glory.

The ones we see around today are not the real things, the real ones are still quite scarce and expensive.

I think because of the location of Edo between the yorubas and the Ibos, we often want to wear clothes that are similar to these cultures, but am aware our men in esan have a traditional clothe called egbu esan, it exactly like the wrapper worn by the Ashantis that goes over the shoulder.

In the link below there is a carving of the Kings mother and we can easily see the beads depicted on her chest, in real life it might have been more elaborate than that and she could have had others with more bead works.

There is also a carving of the queen's maids which also have such bead work on the head and chest. I think it has now become popular culture because of fashion and modernization, so i see it as a revival and popularization of culture.

In the last picture we see a King of Owo in Ondo state having a regalia very similar to the one worn in Bini, and he also had on very elaborate bead work. This is an indication of the influence of the Bini culture on its surrounding neighbors.

Hey,
i don't think it started 15 years ago, the Binis have always been wearing beads for long, uromi where the Woman comes from is in Esan and we don't wear as much beads as the Binis. Also such heavy beads are often worn by the nobility, the King, chiefs and the King's wives,

such wearing of the beads as a vest might have been restricted to the royalty, but the advent of modernization and popular fashion has made it very common.

If you check out pictures of Bini Kings and also several carvings, you would notice heavy beads on them, so it wont be surprising if their wives also have such elaborate beads made for them.

While the Idea of the electric cars may not jell with most of us because of the apparent issues and challenges, it does not mean it can't work. People say he should concentrate on roads, health, water electricity etc, What do you guys think he has been doing for the past 4 yrs or so, what do you think endears him to the heart of Lagosians so much if he has not done quite well in this areas.

i stay in Lagos i have seen massive improvements, Lagos is like a big construction site, bridges have been constructed and some are still under construction, lastma is everywhere in lagos managing traffic, scores of roads have been constructed and repaired, for the new roads being constructed, they are of a far greater quality than those asphalt past governments just spit on the road before, these are roads with proper drainage and sidewalks.

many mini-power projects have been constructed and commisioned to power mini-water works all over the state, maternities and other child care facilities have been severally constructed. So for me the guy has not left important things undone.

As to powering these cars, there are a lot of guys here that have massive Generators in their houses that can power a whole street, hooking up these cars to their mains wont add to their cost, even the government ministries are mostly runned by Generators and these Gens could be able to take in extra loads.

In my house i run my Gen overnight sometimes just to power my Fans or an Ac, so if i switch off the AC and plug in this guy, i won't run an extra cost. There are a lot of places in Nigeria where you can get 10 hrs of electricity on the avg or maybe 3 to 5 times a week, so we can just hook up and the most interesting thing is that, Nepa don't read metres, they just bring a bill at the end of the month, so just hook up as many as u want and u get the same bill.

Its a workable solution for some people, but we all pray the fed govt wud just make the power thing work in this country.

Politics › Re: Breaking News! Pa Enahoro Is Dead! by rabzy: 2:41pm On Dec 16, 2010
These events are very unfortunate, it was a very messy affair, All those leaders had selfish reasons for pursuing their various Agendas. Zik, Awolowo, Sardauna, Enahoro, they men fighting their wars private wars and public wars in whatever way they deem necessary. Mistakes were made by all parties and we are still holed up in their mess.

The way i see it, my personal opinion, and bearing in mind that these were fighting for personal preservation of themselves first then subsequently/perhaps their Kinsmens.

The Northern Elites (sardauna/emirs/sarkis) have always wanted self preservation and a hold on power, while the general Northern masses continue to wallow in abject poverty and ignorance, Gowon was foolish to agree to something he did not understand.

The execution of the coup by the majors clearly had ethnic undertones, it is definitely suspect, the major leaders were of eastern ethnic extraction, in number and prominence, the great Zik was allegedly informed and was conveniently absent, he could have hinted his colleagues in the government, so they escape or prevent the coup, if that was the case he betrayed them,

Enahoro and Awolowo were released from Prison by Gowon, so they would most likely be inclined to support him or maybe he had extracted a pledge of cooperation from them before their release, so even when Gowon was clearly in the wrong to renege on an agreement, they still supported him, they were in opposition to Zik, Zik escaped the coup, They could have relevance in the new Government , Ojukwu could have easily turned the mid-west and the west into an occupied territory, putting his own stooge in the helm of affairs as revealed by the letter he wrote to Victor Banjo. They wanted to stop the war or defeat the Biafrans and they felt any means necessary would suffice,

I admire Ojukwu a lot for his courage and intellect and the industriousness of the Biafran army in the face of overwhelming odds, but Ojukwu married a his God-daughter despite the vehement opposition from the Lady's father-his friend-, a lot of people would not see it as a honorable action, so is it possible he could reneged on the agreement he made with the Victor banjo and crush all opposition in the mid-west and west, definitely. I want to believe the blockade and starvation policy was meant to make the Military capitulate, and not to starve millions to death, Before the policy led to the death of millions, he should have re-evaluated the cost of continuing the war and make an informed decision, and i also heard about forceful recruiting of unwilling igbo men and summarily killing of deserters, the family of such men can't forgive him, maybe they have seen the futility of war. The minorities in the east also bore the brunt of Igbo cruelty. Seceeding does not necessarily mean success for any of the regions, it just means they want to make or mar it themselves.

They were all men with their fears, ambitions and faults, and they all share the blame for how we came to be like this

War is war, it is ugly, it would always be dirty, we may try to give it a human face with treaties and conventions, but it already carries the devil's face, there is no changing of that, that is why i support no war.

They were all men with their fears, ambitions and faults, and they all share the blame for how we came to be like this, but far worse than all they have done is the Jamboree going on the National assemblies and in different states of the federation.

In Imo, Achike Udenwa (onwa ibo) commissioned derelict and uncompleted Buildings as corpers camp, Ohakim has still not finished constructing his house/zoo in Okohia after spending untold millions there, Abia state is jungle of disaster, Aba looks like a town abandoned, the refuse on Asa road can cause epidemic any time.
The sheer poverty in the north and the constant outbreak of something virulent is enough to for us to rankadede-stone any politician from there.
The western governors are a Joke, from smiling Gbenga to slowpoke Akala, possibly lets see what the reinstated governors would do, tho there has been some ray of hope in Lagos and Edo, but it is still a ray amidst so much darkness. These are the people we should start threading about and stop wasting too much energy on old and dead guys.

Peace brothers, these are just my opinions no beefs for anybody or tribe,

For me its always good to look into the past and see what happened and how things could have been different if some actions were taken.
Atrocities were committed. i really want to get as much details as i can from whatever information is still available.

Am from the same place as Enahoro, my mother-in-law is from Avu in Imo state, i have stayed in the west all my life, and my xtian beliefs asks me to be totally detribalized.

Errors were committed by all sides in war, i have heard stories told to me by my mother-in-law of rapes (her sister was forcefully taken by Nigerian soldiers), murders etc, People from calabar, port-harcourt and Akwa-ibom have also told stories of how Igbos have committed crimes against their people and they saw the war as a war of liberation.

My mother's village in Ekpoma was occupied by Biafran soldiers, and rapes and raiding also occurred. We can't just be bitter forever, War does not determine who is right but who is left, and those of us that are left should be objective, discuss issues dispassionately, even if we discuss with passion, strive to remove bitterness and put ourselves in the other's shoes. Doing this could help in cushioning our hurt feelings.

This thread is quite nice, Eni se bi oyo laan ri oyo o se bi baba eni kan. Ife has always been a village from time immemorial and its still largely a village, if not for OAU, that place would almost look like a ghost town compared to Abeokuta, Ibadan, Ilesa etc.

The Alaafin remains the paramount ruler, while the Ooni is the Paramount Priest, and in almost all cultures if not all when there is such a separation of powers, the King comes first. All the Kings respect Ooni, because of his status as the tribal priest, So ooni should also respect others.

Over the years, he has carried himself as bigger and better that others, while we were small in ife, we call him Ooni of London, because he is never around and collecting money from people like Odili, Ikimi and bestowing traditional titles on them is a show of shame, and he is rubbishing the traditions he is supposed to uphold.

And just for some clarity, Oranmiyan did not establish the Benin Kingdom, the Bini and yoruba people predates oduduwa, while there has been no record (i have not heard of any) of a dynasty of the yoruba people b4 the ascendancy of oduduwa, there are numerous records of a dynasty (the ogisos) for Bini b4 the coming of oranmiyan.

That makes me wonder what kind of leadership structure they had b4 Oduduwa, where there Kings or Just strong chiefs controlling different areas like a fiefdom.
