Accountant ‘shocked’ after being fired for stealing £6.7m
Yahoo News UK

James Hall, 49, conned the company he worked for out of a staggering £6.7m. (SWNS)
An accountant was “shocked” when fired for conning his employer out of £6.7m, a court heard.

James Hall, 49, had claimed the large transactions he made to his bank were loans from the director of shopfitting company Vale UK in Merseyside.

The fraud, which took place between 2011 and 2015, came to light following an audit of the firm which works with major retailers like the Co-Op.

Despite stealing millions, Hall “thought it was ridiculous” when the company fired him, Bolton Crown Court heard.

Hall, of Bolton, admitted to four counts of fraud from the company and was jailed for six years.

Hall, who was on £81,000, was confronted in 2015 after irregularities were identified.

In 2012, he asked to borrow £250,000 from the firm's fund to do work on his house so he could sell it but then started to take more with permission.

He told his bosses that he took the money to bet on the Stock Exchange because he “wanted security for his wife and children."

Fiona McNeill, prosecuting said that company director Peter Henerty saw Hall as a “brother”.

Ms McNeil said: “He couldn’t believe the defendant acted in the way he did, he was a trusted employee."

Andrew Nutall, defending, said his client was suffering from a gambling addiction and was “shocked” to find out he had been dismissed from the company.

Hall had worked there since leaving university.

Mr Nutall added: “He seems to have thought himself rather like Prof Pangloss in Voltaire's Candid, everything will turn out for the best.

“That was his thinking, but it hasn’t and he must pay the piper.”

Judge Tom Gilbart told Hall: “Until you decided to involve yourself in this you were a man of impeccable character, a history of good work, a family and a good standard of living and you had a good circle of friends, you had a job that rewarded your intelligence.

"This was extremely serious criminality, you were given a position of trust by this company.”

Detective Constable Claire Taylor of Merseyside Police said after sentencing: “This fraud placed a family-run business under significant financial pressure, causing distress and worry to all employees and their loved ones.

“That such an impact would be caused was clearly lost on Hall, and he will now be left to consider the full consequences of his actions while he serves his jail time.

“We welcome that, following an extensive and complex police investigation, Hall is now behind bars."

Exodus 23
1
"Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness.
2
"Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd,
3
and do not show favoritism to a poor man in his lawsuit.
4
"If you come across your enemy's ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to take it back to him.
5
If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help him with it.
6
"Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.
7
Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty.
8
"Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the righteous.
9
"Do not oppress an alien; you yourselves know how it feels to be aliens, because you were aliens in Egypt.
10
"For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops,
11
but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.
12
"Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest and the slave born in your household, and the alien as well, may be refreshed.
13
"Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.
14
"Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me.
15
"Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread; for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in that month you came out of Egypt. "No one is to appear before me empty-handed.
16
"Celebrate the Feast of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. "Celebrate the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field.
17
"Three times a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign LORD.
18
"Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast. "The fat of my festival offerings must not be kept until morning.
19
"Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. "Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.
20
"See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.
21
Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him.
22
If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you.
23
My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out.
24
Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces.
25
Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you,
26
and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.
27
"I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run.
28
I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way.
29
But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you.
30
Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.
31
"I will establish your borders from the Red Sea [1] to the Sea of the Philistines, [2] and from the desert to the River. [3] I will hand over to you the people who live in the land and you will drive them out before you.
32
Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods.
33
Do not let them live in your land, or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you."

For the first time in its history, architecture's most prestigious award has been won by an African.

Key points:
Diebedo Francis Kere is the 51st person to receive the Pritzker Prize
He became renowned for his architecture of a school in his home town which used local clay and had natural cooling
Mr Kere became the first African architect to design the Serpentine Pavilion in London's Hyde Park in 2017
Burkina Faso-born architect Diebedo Francis Kere was awarded the Pritzker Prize, becoming the 51st recipient since it began in 1979.

Mr Kere, 56, was hailed for his "pioneering" designs that are "sustainable to the earth and its inhabitants — in lands of extreme scarcity," Tom Pritzker, chairman of the Hyatt Foundation that sponsors the award, said in a statement.

Mr Kere, a dual citizen of Burkina Faso and Germany, said he was the "happiest man on this planet" to become the first African to receive the award.

"I have a feeling of an overwhelming honour but also a sense of responsibility," he told AFP.

Mr Kere is renowned for building schools, health facilities, housing, civic buildings and public spaces across Africa, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo, Kenya, Mozambique, Togo and Sudan.

"He is equally architect and servant, improving upon the lives and experiences of countless citizens in a region of the world that is at times forgotten," Mr Pritzker said.

Mr Kere won plaudits for his 2001 project for a primary school in Gando village, in Burkina Faso, where he was born.

Unlike traditional school buildings that used concrete, Kere's innovative design combined local clay, fortified with cement to form bricks that helped retain cooler air inside.

A wide raised tin roof protects the building from rains while helping the air circulate, meaning natural ventilation without any need for air conditioning.

He engaged the local community during the design and building phase, and the number of students at the school increased from 120 to 700, the Hyatt Foundation said in its release.

The success of the project saw the creation of an extension, a library and teachers' housing in later years.

The Hyatt Foundation statement said Mr Kere "empowers and transforms communities through the process of architecture". designing buildings "where resources are fragile and fellowship is vital".

"Through his commitment to social justice and engagement, and intelligent use of local materials to connect and respond to the natural climate, he works in marginalised countries laden with constraints and adversity."

Nebila Aristide Bazie, head of the Burkina Faso architects' council, said the award "highlights the African architect and the people of Burkina Faso".

In 2017, Mr Kere became the first African architect to design the Serpentine Pavilion in London's Hyde Park, a prestigious assignment given to a world-famous architect every year.

He was also one of the architects behind Geneva's International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum and has held solo museum shows in Munich and Philadelphia.

"I am totally convinced that everyone deserves quality," he said.

"I'm always thinking how can I get the best for my clients, for those who can afford but also for those who can not afford.

"This is my way of doing things, of using my architecture to create structures to serve people, let's say to serve humanity."

Tinubu is well educated, very exposed, understands the economy and how to generate revenue, has an eye for spotting the best talents and deploying them appropriately, very good at developing infrastructure, understands how to secure the country, has a good working chemistry with the private sector and most importantly, he’s a NATIONALIST.

No part of the country will feel marginalized or neglected during his tenure as he will carry everybody along. It’s going to be a period of unimaginable economic growth and shared prosperity. Fellow Nigerians, the choice is yours. Vote Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for president.
