The Intellectual Property Lawyers Association Nigeria (IPLAN) has filed a lawsuit seeking a declaration that Bata dance is the root source of Salsa Dance. According to Lead Counsel to the Association, Mr. Folarin Aluko of Trumann Rockwood Solicitors who spoke to our correspondent in Osogbo, Osun State, traditional knowledge is recognized as a specie of Intellectual Property unique to each and every civilization. Historically, African Dance was the primary medium by which our ancestors transmitted our history, morals and culture. Bata dance was originated by the ancestors of the Yoruba people of Southwest Nigeria and today it is a traditional cultural expression of Yoruba culture. Salsa incorporates the movements, choreography, instruments, performances and costume of Bata dance. According to him, as the world becomes a global village, there is an increasing need to protect our cultural heritage from exploitation and appropriation. The broad jurisdiction of the Customary Court, especially on the subject of Customary Law, makes it the appropriate Court to hear and determine this matter. In the lawsuit no. FCT/CC/PYS/CIV/01/2021 filed at the Customary Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, IPLAN prayed the court to declare Bata dance as the origin of Salsa Dance. In the court documents, Aluko argues that Bata dance as an ancient intellectual heritage of the Yoruba deserves the appropriate local and international acknowledgment as well as protection from unfair cultural exploitation. Relying on provisions of the Nigerian Constitution 1999, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights and the FCT Customary Court Act, IPLAN seeks the authentication and recognition Bata dance. The Association believes the suit will highlight the positive impact and intellectual property of Bata dance as a cultural asset of Yoruba People of Western Nigeria. Aluko says the suit will settle the question of the Yoruba origins of the exotic Cuban Salsa dance. https://thenigerialawyer.com/iintellectual-property-lawyers-ask-court-to-declare-yoruba-bata-dance-as-origin-of-salsa-dance/ |

The CAMA issue is beyond this conversation. The concerns they have are centered around giving arbitrary powers to the CAC without recourse to the Court. If you think EFCC and DSS are bad, wait until you see how CAC can be weaponized against contrary voices. |
Setting records is something to be proud. Good guy na record. Baddest guy sef na record. In a country riddled with poverty, underdevelopment, corruption and insecurity, I'm not sure this is the best use of untaxed income. It has its benefits though. An edifice such as this will require workers to look after it. I only hope the church pays people to administer and manage it, rather than ask workers and volunteers to donate their time and resources. I can only hope that the architects and builders and workmen are Nigerian, and the money was circulated within the Nigerian economy. Congrats to the owners. |
BoneBlogger:Story doesn't add up dude. Too many holes. As a 'journalist' did you contact the poster or share the information with NAPTIP, NBA or the Police? Inserting an NCAA statement which was not made in response to your story does not validate the story. Please, be decent. Shior. |
mynairaland2018:Any married person would agree with this post at first- after all, you've lived all your life as a single person. The trick is that marriages, like any partnership, require work because your natural instincts will gravitate towards a solo path. The union starts to pay off if both parties can stick together for the first 5 years... Like every partnership, some ventures will see profit earlier than others, but quitting because of reasons that are common to everyone is quite unfortunate. Of course, they are entitled to their best lives, my chief concern though is whether they have considered the kids who did not choose to be in the situation. |
KevinDein:Sadistic? Why the unnecessary name-calling when instead you should be asking for clarification. Its either you don't understand the post or you didn't take out time to even read it to the end. I hope this is not your usual approach to life generally. That would be a truly sad thing. In case you didn't understand, let me spell things out a little more clearly. My comment has economic and policy-related foundations. 1. Where will the money used to pay the new wage be sourced from considering that the Federal purse is already over-bloated and stretched? 2. What has organized labor done to address the negative impact the civil service has on national productivity from moonlighting, truancy and unprofessionalism? In conclusion, I called out both the legislature and the civil service because both bodies represent the most opaque elements in government. Elected officials come and go, the civil servants know where the bodies are buried. Corruption would not exist without the explicit collaboration of the civil service. The legislature... that's another issue for another day. If these two bodies did their work, Nigeria would be better. Cheers. |
NothingDoMe:No one wants to follow the money. No one is asking where the money will come from? Unless there is a monumental overhaul in the legislative and executive budgets, the money has to come out of the pockets of the private sector in personal and companies income taxes. Where is the so-called organized labor when these civil servants don't report to work on time? Where is the NLC when civil servants demand bribes and inducements before they do their work. Have they justified their wages yet? Security, cleaners and domestic staff in these MDAs have become demi-gods who hide files and sell access to the highest bidder. The civil service and the legislature are the biggest problems we have in this country. If they did their work, Nigeria would move forward. We are in trouble. |
