Business / MTN Sells Its Shares In Jumia For $142million by RandomAfrican1: 11:20am On Nov 02, 2020

South African telecommunications giant, MTN Group on Friday, October 30, 2020, made it known that it had loaded off of its stake in Jumia, one of Africa’s largest eCommerce platforms.

MTN says it’s making a net proceed of $142.31 million dollars from the sale.

MTN stated that it had filed with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) earlier on in August to get its secondary sale of Jumia shares started, as part of a its corporate divestment strategy aimed at simplifying its portfolio over the next three to five years.

“The group has now fully exited its 18.9% investment in Jumia,” a statement from MTN said.

“We are proud to have been a partner in the evolution of one of Africa’s pioneering online marketplace businesses and will continue our relationship with Jumia through ongoing operational partnerships in some markets,” it continued.

Jumia is so far yet to turn a profit, and its shares have since fallen by two thirds, also partly driven by a short-seller casting doubt on its sales figures.

Even though MTN did not specify what the funds gotten from the shares liquidation would be used for, but it is speculated that it would be used in paying down some corporate debt.

Celebrities / Tacha Features In Tiwa Savage’s Latest Video, Ole by RandomAfrican1: 7:04am On Oct 31, 2020

Former housemate of the Big Brother Naija season 4 (pepper dem), Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has been featured in Pop Star, Tiwa Savage‘s latest music video titled ‘ole.’

The song which features rapper Naira Marley seeks to address issues of public fund theft by Nigerian government officials.

It is a song which seeks accountability to the citizenry, and this is further buttressed in the beginning of the music video as the inscription at the start of the song was; “This is dedicated to every single life lost to injustice in Nigeria. A change is coming… #WeAreTired.”

The inscription at the beginning can also be attributed to the souls of young people lost to meaningless police brutalities and also those of lives lost recently during the #EndSARS protests.

The music video was shot by the legendary Clarence Peters himself, with Tacha of BBNaija fame making a cameo appearance.

It is a beautiful video you do not want to miss, watch it here; https://africaatrandom.com/tacha-features-in-tiwa-savages-latest-video-ole/
Business / Ghana Government To Buy Airtel by RandomAfrican1: 3:35pm On Oct 28, 2020

Bharti Airtel’s board has approved the sale of its Ghana joint venture – Airtel Tigo – to the Ghana government. The deal is said to be worth around $25million.

Reliable sources had hinted that Bharti Airtel’s exit had been in the works for sometime now.

“The parties are in advance stages of discussions for conclusion of the commercial agreement for the transfer of AirtelTigo on a going concern basis to the government of Ghana,” Airtel said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange in India on Tuesday evening [October 27, 2020].

The deal means that the Ghanaian government would be owning 100% of shares of the venture which is Airtel Ghana Limited, also known as AirtelTigo – this comes along with all its customers, assets and agreed liabilities.

“Accordingly, Airtel is voluntarily taking an impairment charge of Rs 1,841 million (Rs 184 crore),” the statement added.

AirtelTigo is a joint venture between ‘Airtel’ and ‘Millicom’ wherein Airtel holds a non-controlling 49.95% share in AirtelTigo.

In 2017, Airtel had merged its Ghana operations with Millicom, making it the second largest mobile operator in the country.

The merger was approved by the regulator subject to the condition that the Ghana government will have the option to pick up a stake in the new entity in future.

However, the joint venture appears to have fallen behind those of MTN and Vodafone in Ghana.

The company had previously stated that it was open to consolidation opportunities, including exit, in markets where it is not ranked among the top two players.

The company’s quarterly report ending September 30 showed that Airtel Ghana had a customer base of 5.1 million.

Politics / #endsars: Protestors In Lagos Defy 24-hour Curfew? by RandomAfrican1: 5:21pm On Oct 20, 2020

In light of the ongoing #EndSARS protest in Nigeria, where young Nigerians have been calling for far-reaching systemic changes for ‘a better Nigeria,’ it is alleged that certain government actors who do not want to see the status-quo changed have employed the services of thugs and armed them to beat up legitimate protestors.

The engagement of thugs seems to have been the next resort for these political actors after the use of brute force by the security forces did not seem to deter protestors nationwide. Reports of thugs attacking protestors in Lagos, Abuja, Benin City, Jos and other places have been rife with a number of videos circulating on social media where members of the Nigerian security forces are seen having some meetings with alleged touts in secluded places, subsequent to which these same characters are transported to protest venues to engage in acts of violence – many times, these thugs were overpowered by protestors who caught them on camera and got them confessing to being paid by some people to perpetuate these attacks.

It appears that after the script of attack on protestors by thugs failed, these same political elements decided that they wold infiltrate the albeit peaceful protests with paid thugs to attack government buildings – the first of this happened yesterday in Edo State, where a maximum security prison was allegedly attacked and set open by thugs who claimed to be #EndSARS protestors, causing the release and escape of a number of so-called “prisoners.”

When videos of these so-called prisoners popped up online, many disputed them because the prisoners were not in prison uniforms and many of them spotted the latest sports and designer wears, with some even possessing headphones and music gadgets. But just like clock-work, the government of Edo State declared a 24-hour curfew so as to take steam out of the momentum the protests in the state had garnered.

It appears that the same script was used in Lagos State today as thugs were allegedly paid to attack some Police stations in the city and within the space of an hour of the burning of the first Police station, the state government declared a 24-hour curfew which was meant to start at 4pm (local time) today.

But as things stand, it appears that protestors are unperturbed and unmoved as some people are still out engaging in peaceful protests while some other parts of Lagos is practically at war with local Police with gun battles ongoing.

Politics / #endsars: Nigerians In Paris Hold Protest In Solidarity by RandomAfrican1: 4:38pm On Oct 16, 2020

In solidarity with the movement back home in Nigeria, compatriots in the French city of Paris have also held a corresponding protest to make their grievances against SARS and the entire Nigerian Police Force known.

The EndSARS protests which started nationwide in Nigeria over a week ago has now become a global phenomenon as corresponding protests have been held at Nigerian consulates in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Ghana and now in France.

The protestors in Paris numbered around 200 as they gathered close to the Nigerian embassy in Paris at the Victor Hugo Avenue to make their views known about the atrocities being committed by the Nigerian Police against its own citizens. They protested the Police brutalities back home; their extortions and extra judicial killings among others.

At a point during the protests, the coordinators called out the names of people who had been maimed by SARS, and they went on to dedicate the event of the day to them.

Beyond the Police ill treatments, the protestors also decried the sub-par standard of governance that the country had been witnessing for decades, and have thus decided to add to the voices of their kith and kin back home to demand an accountable and just governance system that gives hope to young Nigerians.

They plan to convene again tomorrow, Saturday 17th, 2020, but this time it would be at the world famous Eiffel Tower, so that the attention of the world can be brought to bear on the situation at hand.

Former Black Stars player Asamoah Gyan and his elder brother Baffour Gyan are wanted by the Ghana Police for allegedly assaulting Mr. Godwin Martey, the Chief Executive Officer of $10 million dollar Accra-based tech company, Web Soft Solutions.

The Police search for the two former Ghana Black Stars players happened after Mr. Martey filed a complaint with the Police.

The two had allagedly accosted the tech executive after he had refused to keep playing a tennis test match between himself and Asamoah with Baffour being the umpire. Mr. Martey says he stopped playing after Baffour was appearing to favour his brother even when his brother was losing points.

She says that as long as they have no other options, “I don’t see anything wrong with it.”

She made this statement on an entertainment talk show.

“There is nothing wrong with someone supporting you financially whether or not they are sleeping with you. People sleep with you and don’t support you financially anyways.”

She stated that it is essential to not downplay the efforts other people are making to survive and make money.

Crime / ENDSARS Protests Going On In Port Harcourt Despite Gov. Wike’s Ban by RandomAfrican1: 10:20am On Oct 13, 2020

It appears that the youth and protestors in Port Harcourt are ready for a showdown with the government of Nyesom Wike, even after he had issued directive to curtail the protests.

Late last night, Governor Wike issued a communique via microblogging app, Twitter that anti-SARs protests were banned in his city. His announcement was met with defiance by youths of that city with many stating emphatically that were not going to back down, and this appears to be what is currently going on.

Thousands of young people have poured onto the streets of Port Harcourt to defy the governor’s directive, with many saying that the were ready to meet any form of brute force from security agencies in equal measure.

Videos show young people in Port Harcourt this morning marching with placards and banners and set to carry it on all day long.

Celebrities / Burna Boy Explains Why He Has Not Been Able To Join SARS Protests by RandomAfrican1: 9:58am On Oct 13, 2020

At the start of protests against the Nigerian Police’s SARS department, many folks had expected afrobeat artiste, Burna Boy to chime in both via social media post and being physically on the ground in one way or another. Almost 24-hours after the protests started, people had not heard anything from the Afrobeats crooner, and this led to a lot of “social media dragging,” as they lampooned the musician for not being with his fans and the youth of Nigeria.

The castigations of Burna Boy went on non-stop for a full day, later on, his British-Jamaican girlfriend, Stefflon Don had to come out in a tweet to tell fans that Burna Boy was dealing with some personal issues and was working behind the scenes to contribute his quota to the protests. This did not still seem to go down well with people as they kept on with the social media raid on the musician.

It was so dire to the extent that all Burna songs were banned at protest venues.

A few hours later, Burna Boy tweeted indicating that he had rented a number of billboards across Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, to help give volume to the protests. These billboards were spread across a number of places in the city. The gesture appeared to have calmed the nerves of some protestors, whiles some others still remained unfazed, as they continued the “Burna Boy castigations.”

Yesterday however, Burna Boy was forced to further clarify the personal issues he was under as his name was still being dragged. Apparently, his mom (affectionally referred to as ‘Mama Burna’) had undergone a major operation and he therefore had to be by her side to care for her.

Burna Boy’s tweet read: “I was Dealing with a Personal Family issue at the Beginning of these Protests . My mum Had Serious Surgery last week! We were all invested in making sure she recovers! i am not about that “put it all out on social media” life.We decided the focus must solely be on this protest.”

The announcement by the artiste appears to have calmed the nerves of fans who have now turned from castigating him to commiserating with him and wishing his mom a speedy recovery.

Politics / Nigerian Youth Declare Week-long Shut Down To End Police Brutality by RandomAfrican1: 8:32am On Oct 12, 2020

Following days of nationwide protest led by the youths in Nigeria in what was basically aimed at the unruly department of the country’s Police Force called SARS, the young people of the West African nation have decided to take their demands further.

What started as peaceful protests on Thursday was met with high-handedness by the Nigerian Police Force with shootings, killings and beatings of peaceful protestors, but the youths of the country remained unperturbed and resolute in their demands. Even as celebrities and notable public figures joined the youth on the streets. Nigerians in diaspora have also joined the clamour and organized their own anti-SARS protests at the various Nigerian consulates (in Germany, USA, UK, Canada among others).

Yesterday, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) came out to declare that the unscrupulous SARS department had been disbanded and its personnel redeployed to other departments – but the youth aren’t having it since this isn’t the first time such a directive had been issued. It can be recalled that since 2015 to date, the IGP has banned SARS at least once every year, yet nothing changes. The young people of Nigeria are demanding that the President they elected into office addresses them and also issue an executive order to end SARS for good.

In furtherance of their concerns, young people all over Nigeria have declared this week a shut-down week/holiday. They have taken to major roads and airports to close them down until they have been heard.

Politics / Journalist In Zimbabwe Jailed For One Month For Exposing Corruption by RandomAfrican1: 6:19am On Oct 12, 2020

A journalist in Zimbabwe has revealed how the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa had him jailed for a month for performing a civil and honorable duty as a citizen by exposing corruption.

Zimbabwean journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, sent a detailed letter to the BBC in what appears to be a tell-it-all of the inhumane treatment he had to suffer in the hands of authorities.

I had been expecting trouble – so when eight men, some with AK-47s, arrived at my gate in an unmarked vehicle on the morning of 20 July, I was not surprised.

One warning had come about seven weeks earlier, when the spokesman for the ruling party had called me “unscrupulous” and accused me of tarnishing the name of the president’s family.

This was after I’d publicised a Covid-19 procurement scandal involving multi-million dollar contracts awarded to buy supplies at inflated prices – the health minister was then sacked and is facing charges over the allegations.

When the state agents asked me to come out of my house, I asked to see their warrant of arrest but they didn’t show me one.

Instead they hit my dining room glass door with a gun, and walked through to my bedroom where I was waiting for them with my phone, live-streaming their entrance.

I was dragged out of my bedroom barefoot, and asked to use the same entrance where the broken glass lay strewn.

That was the beginning of my 45-day nightmare.

I was not alone, I had been arrested on that same chilly day with Jacob Ngarivhume, a political activist who had called for a peaceful protest against corruption.

We were both charged with inciting violence as I had endorsed his march as the Zimbabwean constitution allows citizens to protest peacefully – something that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government often thwarts.

Whilst at Harare Central Remand Prison, we received a visit from Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, which we were told upset the president’s office.

He went on to give details of how he was treated like an animal in prison. People thought that the government of Robert Mugabe was bad, but it appears that the current one is blatantly corrupt and dictatorial.

Celebrities / Davido And Stonebwoy Didn’t Touch Me – Boy Retracts Allegations by RandomAfrican1: 9:19am On Oct 09, 2020

The guy who a few days ago had claimed that he had been physically assaulted by musicians Davido and Stonebwoy has retracted his allegations.

The guy had earlier claimed that he had received a series of slaps and beatings from Davido and Stonebwoy during a recent music video shoot in Aburi.

But the guy has released a new video making a U-turn on his earlier claims. In a new twitter post, he says that he was seeking to clarify the situation. He explains that it was rather the entourage of both artists that accosted him.

He further says that it was actually the artistes who were rather begging on his behalf to be left alone by their entourage.

It is even further revealed the Stonebwoy gave the guy money after receiving slaps from his body guards, it is therefore astonishing that he released the first video to tarnish the images of the artistes.

Celebrities / Davido And Stonebwoy Beat Up A Fan In Ghana by RandomAfrican1: 4:13pm On Oct 06, 2020

It is known that Davido is currently in Ghana shooting a music video for a yet-to-be released song he has with Stonebwoy.

During the video shoot which is said to have happened in Aburi in the Eastern Region of Ghana, it is said that a certain fan who was present during the video shoot put some of the shoot’s content on his IG story.

This appeared to have incensed the entourage of the two musicians when they started seeing the video from the guy’s Instagram story trending on social media, they therefore decided to go seek the guy out from the people present on location and address him.

They eventually found the guy, gave him some initial beatings and then took him aside, away from the crowd – this is according to report from the alleged victim. He made this known in he video he recorded and posted on social media after the incident.

He adds that after the entourage of both artists had giving him the initial beatings, the artistes themselves, that is, Davido and Stonebwoy went to him and also gave him some slaps.

The boy has been pictured with swollen face, but as at the time of reporting this, no one from the camp of both artistes has been available to confirm or debunk the story.

In what appears to be a series of tweets showing that the musician Naira Marley has had enough of the tough Nigerian system; it appears as though we might be gearing up for a “Marlians” protest.

In light of the many frustrations faced by the Nigerian youth of today, the musician has been tweeting since last night and this has been going on for almost 24-hours now.

In one of his tweets, he berated Nigerian youths for preferring to protest on Twitter instead of getting on the ground and make their voices heard and their frustrations known.

The tweet reads: “In this country, we love protesting on twitter. That’s d problem.”

Naira Marley in another tweet indicated is preparedness to hit the streets if someone wold organize the protest because he is of the view that if he did the leading of the protests, he might be sent to the country’s maximum punishment prison (kirikiri) this time around – due to his widely publicized confrontations in times past with law enforcers in the country.

The much-awaited Part Two interview of Nigerian musician, Davido with media personality, Ebuka on Bounce Radio came out not long ago… and in there, the musician reveals one major inspiration that led him to venture into the music industry.

He says something that caught his eye before joining the Nigerian music industry was how Nigerian musicians then, DBanj, Don Jazzy, Wande Coal, Wizkid and others used to party and pop champagne on the regular and practically living lavida loca! – the life of the riche!

The music star disclosed to Ebuka that prior to that, he was not aware that there was so much money to be made in Afrobeats as such he used to be more into American hiphop, listening to the likes of 50 Cent and other American rappers.

Davido reveals that upon one of his visits to Nigeria (since he used to be based in Atlanta in the United States of America), he went to a club and saw how Wizkid, DBanj and other were popping expensive bottles, and he was amazed… he says it was there on that his curiosity was peaked!.

Celebrities / VIDEO: Meet Abbla Unique, An Albino Model And Songstress by RandomAfrican1: 1:51pm On Oct 02, 2020

Abbla Unique is a Ghanaian Model and songstress with a condition of albinism; a congenital disorder characterized in humans by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes.

It is not very common to see an Albino in Ghana trying to be in the limelight. There is a lot of stigma attached to the condition of albinism on the African continent generally, and only few people with the condition are able to live up to their full potentials due to societal misconception.

Abbla Unique is one of those few people who wouldn’t let her condition deter her from making a name for herself through her talents and rather considers her condition as a source of motivation and inspiration.

Afrobeats sensation Davido, had a sit-down session with renowned media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu during the maiden episode of the Black Box Interview Series.

In this Part 1 of what is expected to be a two to three part interview, Davido has some of the most brutally honest conversations he is ever had — even up to the point where he confesses that despite all of the money he has made from music, all of his siblings are richer than he is.

He acknowledges the fact that the money he is making from music isn’t bad, but he knows he would have been making more if he towed the corporate route like his other family members.

“I am doing this because of the love I have for the craft,” he said.

Celebrities / Bbnaija: I Liked Prince In The First Week Of The Show But … – Dora by RandomAfrican1: 11:15am On Sep 29, 2020

The first runner-up for this seasons BBNaija Reality Television show, Dorathy ‘Dora’ Ndidi Amaka ‘The Otititi’ Bachor was the next housemate to have a sit-down with the ever resplendent show host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

Ebuka went straight in and asked her how she felt when it came down to the last two, between herself and Laycon, and she did not emerge as the eventual winner.

Before she answered the questions, Dora was her usual bubbly and joking self, “me I thought the money was coming, so I had already shared it to all of my family members!” she said laughing.

She however added that she wasn’t disappointed for not winning. “I am rather thankful. I remember saying to Big Brother a number of times that I was thankful for the experience because in that time, I found myself, ” she added.

When she was asked why she thought that Neo was going to be the likely winner during her last diary session in the house, she answered saying that she thought that Neo had a lot of energy which the public would have probably gravitated towards.

Ebuka also decided to ask Dora what she thought about Ozo and Nengi‘s relationships since Ozo was first her friend and later on in the show, she also became close with Nengi.

She was initially trying to be dodgy with the answer, but Ebuka insisted, reminding her that the show was over and that there was no more eviction. Dora then eventually answered saying that, “I think that they care about each other, they look out for each other, and they will be fine.”

She also touched on her feelings for Bright O, and she explained it saying some of those things happen when you people 20 strangers under one roof for weeks.

She then went on to make a confession about Prince which can be seen in the video here; https://africaatrandom.com/bbnaija-i-liked-prince-in-the-first-week-of-the-show-but-dora/
