ABUJA—The Presidential Panel set up to investigate alleged human rights violations by the Nigerian Army, yesterday, held its inaugural sitting in Abuja, with Benue indigenes narrating how soldiers helped rampaging herdsmen to attack their communities.

They narrated how about 30,000 persons were sacked by the military from their abode. Represented by their lawyer, Mr. Mike Utsaha, the community told the panel that while 28 persons were killed in the attack, 91 compounds and property were destroyed. According to the community, the attack was carried out by the 93 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in Takum, Taraba State. The community, through an 18-page memorandum submitted to the panel, stated how following intense and sustained attacks from 2013 to 2015, they were massacred and displaced from their ancestral land by the combined team of soldiers and herdsmen.

He told the panel that the herdsmen, with the active support of soldiers, were still occupying ancestral lands of the five communities. Lamenting before the panel, Kwaghkper said: “The soldiers are even providing security for the herdsmen, who are occupying the ancestral lands of the communities. “The displaced people of the communities, who escaped from the series of sustained attacks, have become refugees in Cameroon and internally displaced persons, IDPs, taking shelter in various places in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, under the watchful eyes of both the federal and state government without any form of assistance.” Another witness, Mr. Agbo Utah, told the panel that soldiers watched as herdsmen burnt down his compound. He also narrated how he was beaten, arrested and detained for a week by soldiers who disrupted local government election held in the area in 1998.

THE AFARA-UKWU ARMY/IPOB CLASH; BEYOND THE RHETORICS.

Yesterday's clash between men of the Nigerian army and members of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) in Afara-ukwu, the hometown of the Biafran leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has further proven that indeed, for Nigeria as a country, the Colonial Masters left too early.
According to Abia state police chief, Leye Oyebade who spoke to Premium Times via phone, the military were parading a new Armoured Personnel Carrier and passed through Nnamdi Kanu's residence.
On the side of the Military, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major Oyegoke Gbadamosi, stated that troops of 145 Battalion were carrying out a "Show Of Force" near the residence of the IPOB leader when IPOB members blocked them and they fired shots in the air to disperse them
IPOB insists their leader's home was invaded by Nigerian soldiers leaving 3 of their members with gun shot injuries.
Beyond these claims and counter claims and regardless of the account you chose to believe, there are fundamental questions that must not just be asked but equally answered by those concerned.
And here are the questions:
What is the Nigerian Military doing on the streets of the Southeast which is adjudged the most peaceful region in the country?
Has the Military now replaced the police as law enforcement agency? The army has absolutely no business with unarmed peaceful agitators. Even in countries with voodoo democracies, routine law enforcement is the job of the police.
What manner of national army carries out "Show Of Force" by 6:30pm with armoured tanks in a rusty village in a region filled with tension and widespread perception that the military has been deployed with the sole intent to kill and maim
Where is common sense in these?
Who deploys heavily armed soldiers against unarmed youths peacefully asking to be allowed to determine their future via a referendum?
If this was not a calculated attempt to provoke IPOB members so as to have a justification for mass murder, why would the army leave every other road and chose Nnamdi Kanu's residence to do "Show Of Force"??

This same Military is not doing "Show Of Force" with the boko haram terrorists who have killed thousands of Nigerians and displaced millions.

Few days ago, about 28 innocent villagers were mercilessly slaughtered by fulani herdsmen with known faces, names and addresses in Plateau state.

Criminally funny enough, boko haram terrorists once rated the world deadliest terror group are currently enjoying a juicy amnesty package while fulani militants once rated the world 4th deadliest terror groups currently have a dedicated taskforce made up of these same Nigerian soldiers gifting them with 24/7 protection.
A govt that negotiates with terrorists from the same religion and region as the President but turns around to visit unarmed aggrieved youths from another religion and region with armoured tanks and "Show Of Force" is a rogue govt.
Quite frankly, there can be no argument that under President Muhammadu Buhari, the Tukur Buratai-led Nigerian army has almost completed its metamorphosis into a bunch of commonsensically bankrupt killing machine full of brawn but devoid of brain.
The fact that the Military appears oblivious of the fact that its invasion of civilian neighbourhood with tanks is a grave legal, moral and commonsensical anomaly is the greatest tragedy of it all. But in fairness to the soldiers, the fault is not entirely theirs. When you have a Commander-In-Chief who thinks its normal for his soldiers to kill hundredS of Shiite youths, women and children in Zaria just to make way for his army Chief, you'd be tempted to see the invasion of civilian space with tanks as nothing.
It does appear though that in Buhari, this country has the singular misfortune of being cursed with a president who seem very determined to escort her to Golgotta.
Let me quickly leave this here with a piece of advise for those who think guns and tanks will stop this current Biafra agitation:
The best way of fuelling an agitation is by trying to suppress it.

NIGERIAN ARMY DID NOT ATTACK LEADER OF IPOB NNAMDI KANU'S HOME NOR KILL ANYONE

The attention of 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, has been drawn to fictitious news going round especially on the social media that troops have invaded the home of Nnamdi Kanu and killed 3 persons.

This is far from the truth. Rather, it was a group of suspected IPOB militants that blocked the road against troops of 145 Battalion while on show of force along FMC-Word Bank Road in Umuahia town, Abia State at about 6.00-6.30pm, today. They insisted that the military vehicles would not pass and started pelting the soldiers with stones and broken bottles to the point of injuring an innocent female passerby and a soldier, Corporal Kolawole Mathew.

The troops fired warning shots in the air and the hoodlooms dispersed. No life was lost.

Therefore the public are kindly enjoined to disregard the rumours going round and the fictitious photographs of purported victims of attack. Both the soldier and the innocent female passerby have been evacuated to the unit's Medical Inspection Room and are receiving treatment.

We would like to use this opportunity to warn mischief makers threatening the peace and security of the country through falsehood such as above.

Members of the public are please requested to go about their lawful business and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or security outfit.

The government must act decisively, one way or the other. Prevarication can lead to a costly gangrene. The wound must be drained and cleaned, so that it can heal. The wound dressing must involve comprehensive political engagement of the southeast, and a restructuring of the federation.

We are on a slippery slope. Nnamdi Kanu was granted bail by a court. He is being tried for offences bordering on treason. He has flouted the bail conditions. He must have been emboldened by the enticing temerity of the Arewa youths. ShettimaYerima and his Arewa youths committed treason. They issued a quit notice to Igbos to leave the north,or face severe consequences by October 1. They did more than plagiarize Nnamdi Kanu’s hate files .They were not arrested. They were not charged.


The Federal high court judge that granted Nnamdi Kanu bail wouldn’t rightly be concerned about effect of Arewa youth’s impunity on Nnamdi Kanu’s actions as no case has been brought before him. So despite the double standards, the court may have no option but to revoke his bail. The law is an ass. The federal government has found its missing courage, it has asked the court to revoke the bail. The federal government is not permanently timid. The judge has no decision to make. Well, Nigerian Judges can be creative, sometimes
If the bail is revoked, Nnamdi Kanu will have to abandon his tour of his Biafra, and return to a ‘zoological’ prison in Kuje. That is now almost inconceivable. Almost. This is where it gets complicated. If Nnamdi Kanu’s utterances can be relied on, he would not submit himself for incarceration. Then once again, the judge will have no options. A bench warrant will be issued against him. When a Bench warrant was issued against Tompolo, the Nigerian police didn’t find him. So the federal government may let the police not find Nnamdi Kanu. Tompolo was discreet though.




He sought refuge in the creeks. He was out of view, until he came to bury his dad. Nnamdi has said he cannot go on exile. It’s beneath him to go out of circulation, into hiding. That would make him lily-liveried. He was sent by God. He has been touring Biafra. So he isn’t exactly a Tompolo, who claims no territory. Tompolo wasn’t seen. Yes he wasn’t seen destroying crude oil pipelines. Nnamdi Kanu has no pipelines to put out of use. He can’t touch the economy. He has no way of bringing the federal government to its knees, from the shadows without amputating his nose, turning Igbo land into a cauldron. IPOB is now a non violent organization. That’s their new image. So the Police may be forced to arrest an ubiquitous and garrulous Nnamdi Kanu. However, it is not compulsory, not inevitable.



This is Nigeria. The police declared Shettima Yerima and Arewa youths wanted . Shettima sauntered from place to place, huffing and puffing. The Police chose not to see him
So the police may easily fail to see Nnamdi Kanu. The government has an alternative. It may send the Minister of Interior to say something absurd that exonerates Kanu
The Judge will understand. This is Nigeria. The Minister of Interior said that the Arewa Youths claimed they were misquoted. Heavens didn’t fall. Shettima later denied the minister and his tales. Shettima is ,obviously, not a coward. He boldly stated he was withdrawing the quit notice to honour Buhari. The ijaw youth council president is sure Shettima had state dinners. The government has other options. It can send an official to waffle about heating up the polity. Then it can explain the decision to trash the court warrant and let Kanu roam as politically sensible. That’s what cowards do. In fact it can ask the attorney General to reverse himself, and say that Kanu cannot be arrested. And he would blame it on security concerns. That’s what the chief law officer said about his impotence against the Arewa Youths who committed treason in broad daylight. The government can always chicken out. So the wound can fester a little more. They have been warned. Ango Abdullahi warned them about Shettima, they capitulated. So Ohaneze has warned the federal government. Nnamdi Kanu could be set to bask in his own impunity. The Judge would understand. Nnamdi’s criminal case could be effectively over. Nnamdi may not risk going to Abuja. He is sure no policeman would come to his Biafra to arrest him
He has warned Buhari. He said his non violent IPOB would slaughter any Policeman who comes to arrest him in Biafra. That’s is his idea of civil disobedience. The Die is cast. The federal government can’t arrest Nnamdi without crossing the red line of double standards. The federal government cannot leave Nnamdi and his daringness without conceding sovereignty. Igbo elders are quiet. Igbo youths are restless. Emotions have replaced reasons. The elders have taken refuge in timidity. They now speak in muffled tones




The politicians can be forgiven. Politics entails opportunism. Nnamdi Kanu,increasingly, looks like a king or a king maker. The churches have a strong influence on Igbo politics. Igbo politicians go to churches to declare their candidacy and to lobby the clergy and their congregations. The churches play politics of denominations godlessly. But the church claims to be the light of the world. Igbo church leaders are quiet. In northeast the clerics kept low profile. The core north didn’t like President Jonathan. People refused to speak up. Boko haram was troubling Jonathan, and making the place ungovernable. That was exciting. Powerful figures maintained a conspiratorial silence. Yusuf and Shekau preached, told the people what they wanted to hear. They talked about poor governance and corruption. They told them that democracy was sinful, ‘zoological’. That it was designed to keep the ordinary people in perpetual servitude. Their followership grew. Boko haram metastasized. They have tapped into a rich vein of frustration and political insensitivity. The economic circumstances have yielded many idle hands. It’s a perfect combustible mix. The murderous forays of herdsmen fueled already inflamed tempers. A crisis looms in the east. So no one cares to interrogate the minds peddling this secessionist idea. No one questions their methods vehemently . It’s enough that they mouth marginalization of Igbos and paint a colorful Biafra. It’s enough that Buhari is cast as a symbol of oppressive, anti-Igbo, Islamist, Hausa Fulani hegemony. Igbos are truly marginalized.



The Bishops ought to be discerning. They claim spiritual insight. They can’t be as impressionable as the rabble. They can’t be as excitable as youths who didn’t experience the civil war. They cant afford to be enthralled by mere charm. Some of them actually now find Kanu

Some Igbo Bishops are frolicking openly with Nnamdi Kanu. Some others are relishing the prospects of a loathed President Buhari being taught some lessons. Biafra is always seductive. Igbos are emotional about it. It is sweet nostalgia of what nearly was. The promised land. Anyone who comes in the name of Biafra is welcome. The Buhari government didn’t help matters. The sense of alienation has never been greater. Politicians who lost in 2015 took their grief personal

intimidating. Kanu says Jesus is not God. The Bishops don’t care. He mocks Mary. The catholic priests are unperturbed. If they are perturbed ,then they are filled with the spirit of fear. God gave them the spirit of power

The priests don’t treat that as heretical. The priests must announce their allegiance to Christ. It wouldn’t matter if Kanu were a self respecting atheist who didn’t defame and ridicule other peoples religious beliefs. Kanu can’t get away with duplicity. He says the worship of Jesus is Idolatry. It is good we don’t mix politics and religion. It is good we keep the state away from religion
But Kanu has not stopped announcing that God sent him. He said that God has decreed that there would be no election in Anambra state. We have spirit filled priests who claim they hear from God. Why can’t they confirm or condemn Kanu’s spiritual pronouncements? The IPOB spokesman claims Kanu is a Christian. Kanu denies that he is a Christian. Why is it difficult to know whom Kanu is? If you ask hard questions , you will be told its not about Kanu. But who decided there will be no elections in Igboland? Kanu hears from God, so he says
He may actually hear from God. Since he drops the name of God, Igbos must be told what God he worships. The role of a priest is not just to collect tithes and offerings. A priest owes the people and the society a duty to expose religious charlatanism and sorcery. When a man goes to Agwushi and collects prayers, and jumps over to adoration ground of father Ebube Muonso and collects more prayers, that’s syncretism.




It could mean nothing. But it could be a window into a mind filled with confusion. Priests can’t sit astride and watch the people dance on the brink for lack of knowledge. Why is the church silent? Who is an anti Christ? Truth and reason have been battered on Aba highway

Igbo priests are passing by like the Rabbi who snubbed the man beaten by highway robbers. Where are the good Samaritans? Where are they? The church perhaps isn’t ready to dabble into politics . Igbo churches dabble into it only when telling members to vote a Catholic and against an Anglican or vice versa. Who really is an antichrist? A murderous Fulani Herdsman who kills some Christian farmers? Or a man who peddles damaging falsehoods about Jesus Christ and the Bible? If the church cannot speak for moral reasons, why can’t the church speak for prudential reasons? Why can’t it defend Christian theology against an onslaught from a charlatan? Nigeria, they say, is a zoo. Our leaders act with impunity. Then the messiah comes for the Igbos and no one is ready to hold him to account for his speeches and positions. Only a few are interested in interrogating his mind. What sort of freedom do Igbos dream of? A freedom that would excommunicate dissent and plurality of views? A freedom where every critic is a marked traitor? Ohaneze is timid. It may have actually become redundant. It sees the crowd that follows Kanu around and it is ready to embrace a little demagoguery, once in a while. Kanu has labeled Ohaneze leaders corrupt old men willing to sell their consciences and birthrights, for crumbs. Ohaneze excuses IPOB’s waywardness as understandable youthful exuberance. Ohaneze has no balls. So Ohaneze fudges and fudges. Ohaneze knows Igbos are marginalized.





But Ohaneze knows that Kanu’s exuberance puts Igbo lives and property at great peril. Ohaneze knows that the overall interest of Igbos is best served by an equitable Nigeria and not secession. Ohaneze knows the time has come. But Ohaneze is cowardly, or impotent. Without a bold church, without foresighted courageous politicians, without a fearless Ohaneze, who can save Igbos

Political intolerance has been sown in Igbo land. There is this new song . A very rhythmic and danceable song by one Don Prince, aka Sampe. The sort of thing you hear in Pyongyang. It says Kanu is the leader, and there will be no elections henceforth in Igbo land. It says anyone who votes in Igboland would be sent to the north. The song has gone viral. The youths have become automatons. Anyone who raises a voice against Kanu and his IPOB is branded a traitor. In one of his glib talks on Radio Biafra he boasted that the names of traitors were being compiled. IPOB is that non violent group that once threatened to murder Obasanjo.



A few days ago it openly threatened to kill any policeman who dared to re arrest Kanu. The elders wallow in denial. They dismiss the dissemination of hate and brigandage as youthful exuberance. They think Kanu would get Igbos an autonomous region, and then disappear. So they would take over and restore order. That’s the strategy. So the madness is a ploy. They whisper it, they nod their heads, smile knowing smiles, and wink. They are deluded. Some would say it has gone beyond Kanu. That’s true.
The problem of Igbo marginalization was never about him. But no one should deny this frightening development. Nuisance can be fruitful. But nuisance can outlive its usefulness. It’s good that the governors of South East states have met with Kanu. The government has a political problem to solve.



It has attended to it with arrogance , and sometimes with half-hearted condescension. Hesitancy and prevarication are no good options. The Federal Government has to be decisive. Military high handedness would be counter -productive. Constructive political engagement that enthrones law and order in the immediate term and equity, fairness and sense of belonging on the long term, must be commenced now. Any person who breaks the law and or threatens security of our country must face the law.

Reasoning of a Nigerian Senator.He acts intellectual but is bereft of that skill.Universe is for all mankind with different culture, race etc. We r in one universe but with different country.Europeans have different people and culture,they r in one universe but v different culture.Africa is a continent with different people in a universe but there r cultures and people with political nations.That was why President Buhari support the seperatist group in Morrocco and the Arab palestinian.Sir Ahmadu Bello also said the Hausa Fulani r of a different culture from others and he initially sought for seccession in the past but was advise by the British to jittison it for a superior advantage in one Nigeria.

OK guys, lemme explain somethings to you.
1) Hausa people had tried an invasion of the SW before, it didn't end well for them, we may not be violent, but we are skilled at self defence. Its not just you guys against them.
2) Every Yoruba is bred with knowledge of the perpetual enmity with Hausa's, infact an average Yoruba thinks of them as idiots (ask why they are called Abokis in SW)
3) Every Yoruba knows that Igbos are less of enemies and more of competitors to us. But every Yoruba also thinks of Igbos as prone to being dubious and disloyal, especially when they are set to benefit from it.
4) Due to the aforementioned, Yorubas prefer sometimes to deal with Hausas (whose state of enmity with them is sure), than with Igbos, who may be their friends but who may betray their trust, something Yoruba people value a lot, and know at least they cannot give to Hausas.
5) Be sure that like Igbos, Yoruba people also have a cause for feud with Hausas, one dat even goes beyond the creation of Nigeria, the place called Ilorin. No true Yoruba does not know of the story of Ilorin, Aare Afonja and Alimi.
6) Yoruba people are generally the most welcoming in this country, you may dispute it, but I've been to most other regions in this country, save NE. Thus we welcome Hausas as much as we welcome Igbos, Idomas, Efiks, Igalas, Tivs, etc. You are all welcomed in our Lands ( we don't like that no mans land talk).
7) Due to Pre-colonial trading, a lot of lingual similarities have occured between Hausas and Yorubas, thus in modern life, it may tell why Yorubas seem to understand Hausas and their Language/Culture faster and better than Igbos and their language/Culture. Its not for animosity.
This is subject to dispute, but an average Yoruba person,like Artisans and Traders and co, is highly interested in politics and governance, but doesn't really give a damn about either the Unity or Seperation of Nigeria, although when asked most would reply that "we are better off on our own".
9) The above Stated reason is why not too many Yoruba people go out of the SW for residence and those that do so are considered doing it at their own risk.
10) Yorubas are benefiting the most from the fracas between Hausas and Igbos, as they are able to make both bring their resources meant for other parts of the country to the SW, due to their non-partisan accommodation. Why do u think SW is the least poor region in the country, and having the highest per capita standard of living (fact from Nigerian Bureau of Statistics)

I disagree with u in d area of trust and betrayal. Yorubas have mistrust, betrayal&backstabbing in their DNA.For example Awo betraying Ojukwu,Obasanjo backstabbing Awo,Abiola betraying Awo,Jakande betraying Awo,Hausa's suspecting Awo,Igbos never ever trust a Yoruba man,Eleganza,Folawiyo&co betraying Abiola,Tinubu betraying GEJ,Fashola,Fayemi&Amosun betraying Tinubu.The list is endless.Every Nigerian has an encounter to tell about Yorubas lack of trust,betrayal,Backstabbing,theft and lies.Even u check among all d ethnic groups in Nigeria d one that has such character u possess.You v said it all that yorubas don't like leaving SW.Any group dat dislike moving out to integrate has xenophobic and hatred on visitors.Imagine d number of time yorubas fought Igbo traders,Hausa and Ijaws from 1999.Consider Yoruba threat to Emzor and Oba Akiolu threat of lagoon genocide. Governors in the south-eastern part of Nigeria are reportedly meeting the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in Enugu.

We learnt that the meeting, which is holding inside the Enugu Government House, also has His Royal Highness, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, the father of the IPOB leader, in attendance.

The Sun listed the government at the meeting to include: Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who is the host. Others include Dave Umahi of Ebonyi; the deputy governor of Anambra state and Dr Nkem Okeke. It was learnt that Governors Rochas Okorocha of Imo and Dr Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia were being awaited.

Details of the meeting were sketchy at the time of this report, but Emmanuel Uzor, the chief press secretary to Governor Umahi confirmed it adding that one of the major issues for discussion is the call by IPOB for residents to boycott the forthcoming Anambra election.

The election holds on November 18.

All these meetings between Igbo elites and Nnamdi KANU r an expression of fear by d Igbo elites. KANU is speaking d hearts and wishes of d Igbos.Millions of Igbos outside Nigeria r in full expectation of Biafra as well as Igbos in Nigeria not to mention d ones in igboland.Igbos will fare better outside Nigeria bc of their nature which does not suite d Nigerian politics.D more they remain in Nigeria d worst their cases will be.

The presidents speech about Ojukwu is inconsequential to the present happenings in the country and that speech will cause more problems than bringing a solution because now the government will want to act based on this. To the Igbo's Ojukwu's meeting with Buhari is an infamous act and even if they had discussed, Ojukwu must have either spoken based on the fact that the government of that time was an all inclusive one that integrated all Nigerians from different levels.
To the Igbo's Ojukwu's era is long gone and this is a new dispensation, the Ohaneze ndi Igbo are all part of the old dispensation, there opinion do not matter to the generality of the Igbos today.
