When an economy is in crises....HSE goes down as well. It is the natural progression. When people sit down to judge the quality of a government by 'projects', this is the result. We have taken governance to such low standards that calling a group of contractors together to go do some project is termed 'development' and is the basis of calling an administion successful. But this picture shows the precise difference between projects and development as one is clearly consuming and feasting off the other to survive. Development is not how many mouse traps you place in your hous or how expensive your fumigation bill is. Development is how clean and hyg nic your environment is such that rays have no business there. Nigerians will get to understand these things one day. But in the stead bridges, manhole covers, pipelines, railway sleepers, culverts, solar lights and all the nifty 'projects' will remain fodder for those society has left behind,.those that government refuses to attend to, to prioritize. |
ACRI:Same as with the military and police chiefs he appointed. They were the most senior...and longest serving..... |
madridguy:I am all for the removal of fuel subsidy and remain so simply because it was a cesspit of corruption far beyond the political will of all past and perhaps future leaders of this country. If your criminal justice system is not working. If people do not fear or respect the law. And if you as a leader depends on the very same criminals to get into office and to stay there then the failed state of the nation necessitates the removal. The first lesson of fire control is to cut off the source of the fuel. However my hope and thinking then was that the resources not lost to corruption will be aggregated for development. This sadly has not been the case. As usual a good proportion has been 'shared' and the rest handed over to 'contractors'. In both cases the opportunity for real development, a sound economy and a prosperous nation has gone up in smoke. The money has ended up being truncated into the pockets of a few....now tell me, what is the difference between this scenario now and the fuel subsidy resources going into the pockets of the same few....nothing....the nation is still losing, the people are still poor and the country remains underdeveloped. That is THE MAIN REASON people are calling for its return. The promised benefits of the removal are invisible to most except family, friends and lackeys of this government....and of course those who have familiarized themselves with the chains of bondage, that they cannot see a better way out but are doomed.to academic studies of how to cook soup with N3,000 for instance, a race to the bottom. Such a disappointing state of citizenship. |
Look fellows. If you could ensure 8 years of. Buhari you will ha e the mental fortitude to endure another four years of this terrible state of affairs. Sixteen years is a lot but a lot less than a lifetime. |
henrybomb:They cannot let go of their feudal shackles. Even if you rid them of all their idols they will find ways to make one out of thin air. |
Absolutely, 100 percent. If you are a believer and permit God to direct you will have nothing to worry about. You will get the best, guaranteed. |
What a mess. This is the President of Nigeria having g his character dragged through the mud like this. Just unprecedented. |
That is your fuel subsidy. They say it only enriches the rich. They say they don't have money for the things you need. They say they have to borrow. They say because you are not paying enough taxes. But I will continue to say this. WHEN RHE ISSUE US ABOUT THEM. WHEN IR IS ABOUT THEIR SURVIVAL OR THEIR PLEASURE....THEY WILL FIND THE MONEY....IN GARGANTUAN AMOUNTS. Never seen a citizenry so deceived, so led about like cattle by these brigands that call themselves leaders. A people who cannot see what is happening around them. That they are being sold by these people into poverty and slavery. |
Stop all these. Go and fight for decent, honourable living. Those who are spiriting your resources away and leaving you scraping the bottom of the barrel don't have two heads, only one mean, deceptive one. They ask you to manage but they can't. They tell you to make sacrifices but are busy enriching themselves, family and friends....at your expense. 'Familiarize yourselves with the chains of bondage, and you are preparing your own limbs to wear them...' Abraham Lincoln, September 11, 1858. Stop it. |
Naustine:They were the same in previous regimes. All of a sudden they are no longer the same. |
Just coming in from the field on midday break to check the state of United and boy it is as dour as the weather in Rivers state. When it rains for the Red Devils, it pours indeed. This club can no longer be considered as a 'big club'. It's mid table mediocrity is confirmed game after game, season after season. To be a big club or team in World these days, you've just got to have a SPANISH gaffer in your dugout. Spain is the centre of the soccer world this decade. Back in the rain |
dominique:Was about saying this. The fixture computer is absolutely brutal this season. |
This could get ugly. |
Nextjs:Hmmm....just brought me back to the regime of the late General Sani Abacha. He raised fuel price from N3.25 to N11.00 per litre and see what he was able to do through the PTF in just the three years before his death in 98. Almost every highway in Nigeria was undergoing repair. Schools, hospitals, airports, everywhere you looked had the PTF stamp. And all that in three years of his life and an additional few months before OBJ scrapped it. All that despite the massive corruption associated with the late Buhari led organisation. And all that for just N7.75 increase on a litre. And all that when the highest price for oil on the international market was 20 dollars. At his death oil was about 9 dollars per barrel. Not helped by his war against Ken and the Ogonis that further eroded oil output to the lowest point in decades. And his regime facing sanctions had little to no access to international loans. Despite all that.... Today the same gasoline has been sold at the same as the exchange rate of up to N1,400 to a litre, that is almost four times what it was before this government. And despite the fact that oil has sold around 100 dollars for much of the year since the Iran war, borrowing has gone unabated with the claimed infrastructure not even coming near what Abacha did in his own three year PTF intervention with much, much, much less resources. Something is just not adding up. No matter how long it takes, the facts will eventually see the light. Let no one deceive us. Revenues or earnings is not and never is the problem of Nigeria. It is the attitude, the culture, and the morality of those at the helms of any government that determines how much traction a single naira or dollar can get. They are directly responsible for the state of poverty in Nigeria today. |
It will only endanger lives if there is a wider or deeper conspiracy and perhaps someone or some folks are in WITSEC...which means it was likely cartel level stuff.....hmmm... interesting. |
Even George Foreman will be impressed with this deft uppercut that should leave Mr. Aregbe crying for mommy.... |
frog12:The devil is in the detail. How?...how?.... how will.you do this. As you think about the , 'how', Nigerians will remain as vague about your candidacy as you are of their pressing needs. Nigeria should transit to an intellectually based democracy. One of vision, thought, planning and execution and away from dancing, mere slogans and rhetorics and plenty of hot air. |
When are we going to close this chapter on South Africa and just move on. All these looking back will just turn us into a pillar of salt. Nigerians....move on. |
CharlesCNG:Yes he cannot decide how a governor spends. But that is the exact reason why subsidies were removed. Because government could NOT CONTROL how resources were spent on fuel imports. So Mr. President has shut the door to a set of irresponsible officials in the NNPC and co. and handed it over the same resources to another.set of irresponsible officials at state and council levels. So the same weakness shown by the citizenry in not being able to monitor and supervise subsidy is the same weakness the citizenry have in not being able to monitor and supervise their state governors and councilmen. But even more than that the Federal government in itself has not been able to respond to the people appropriately. So they themselves are stubbornly pig headed. They themselves choose what to spend money on and what to ignore. Have they too not been seen to waste and steal....so what are we saying. Everyone shouts power, fix power fix power, as an example, but they have refused. Instead they are busy building concrete roads at enormous costs no one is pressing them for....so what are we saying... So who is showing good example to the states and councils by fidelity in expenditure and responsiveness to the people's needs....? |
Disagree with Mr. Onanuga on this. First and foremost policies are not set in stone. They are not made by an all knowing and all able God so they can be reversed or altered. Secondly I personally am an ultra strong advocate (have always been) for the removal of fuel subsidy but for the very reason that the state institutions that were necessary to ensure its fidelity are not just up to it. The subsidy removal was a necessary leg amputation because the expertise, the means, at saving the diseased leg is not just available and delay would be fatal. However, however, however. I have been absolutely, totally and unequivocally disappointed at the way and manner the MANAGEMENT of the fallout and the missed opportunities at utilizing the gains of the 'savings' have been conducted. There was NO plan to handle inflation whatsoever. If as they say subsidy did not benefit the poor, then why is the poor bearing the significant effect of inflation. And the logic is simple. When you remove the pillar that supports a structure or a tyre that runs a vehicle in order to repair it, you MUST have a plan to keep the building or the vehicle upright and standing in the meantime. You simply cannot allow everything to collapse. What then is the repair about if everything is destroyed. You don't go about 'sharing' the so called 'savings' as the first resort and which is the certain trigger for inflation, but you invest first in anti inflationary mechanisms. The first investment should have been alternative energy and energy delivery systems that will.match or better the existing subsidy systems. Run such a program with all the resource you have saved for a year or two or the entire first term. When the economy is stabilized then you can push onto your development plan but you take everything from the people and share to be wasted as seen across all federating units is just heart breaking. You are amputating to save a life not not end it. |
Belurved1:He should grow up, the world is changing. |
I can give titles if I remember in both spoken or written form but I really do not care how I am addressed. Left all that regimented stuff way back when I transited to civilian life, really hated it back then and couldn't stand what I called the grandpa and grandma conversation overly heavy on courtesy. So address me by first name, last name, whatever. Doesn't matter to me and from whom it comes. I have this friend who doesn't do courtesy at all, I mean at all. He calls you up and even if it is a month since you last spoke he just gets to the point, just love that. Remember those days before mobile telephony and you had to head to a NITEL exchange (I often used the one on Allen Av) and you want to make an international call to hit a certain target at a specific time instance and there you are on the queue and the chap in front of the queue uses the first five minutes greeting, courtesies and all that ....and you are there fuming... just hated that. Tony, you are an international figure...adapt. |
This is becoming very embarrassing. You can imagine what he discussions at various embassies in Abuja amongst diplomats... This is not good. Can't the AG do something about this to head it off. The AG should fly out there and sort it out. It is festering. |
Really not any of our business what a US sailor eats or where he sleeps. We know far more about the condition of service of the US military than our own military hunkered down in various parts of the north under even more dangerous situations., how come. Is there any public forum in the United States with a thread dedicated to the service conditions of the Nigerian military in Bornu...? What is wrong with you people. |
I don't know him. I don't watch Nigerian TV, not even news. I only listen to radio when I can. But everyone has a stand, a bias, a perspective and it is their Constitutional right to do so. I see no reason why that is a problem. Every media house in the world has a bias one way or the other, to culture, to politics, to religion, to ideology and a whole gamut of social inclinations. |
No comment. Not my tradition, not my wallet. |
Flangelo12:Safari nau....haba. This is summer and the world is on vacation except us on essential services. Kenya is No. 5 Africa destination for visitors. |
Kai, but Eurocopters are the gold standard for chopper design and build. So it must be the flying in mountainous regions which has always been the chopper's nemesis. Sudden weather changes are always around the corner. Condolences to those affected. |
Political patronage that's all. It is not about work. If they want to change a light bulb they will still ask for contract tenders. |
KINGKONG:Projects, projects, projects. This is now the yardstick to define the performance of government. It is no longer administration, no longer service delivery. Projects because it is synonymous with CONTRACTS which everyone loves. I give you ten naira and you build me a shop, I give you twenty naira and you supply it with goods. To us these days that is governance, that is the priority we expect of those that we vote into leadership. We judge them by how many contacts they award. It is all about money, money and more money. But if we took governance as seriously as we take our individual businesses, what is our priority. The shop, the goods or the sale, the trade. What forms the successful engineering of a business, of an economy. If Dangote executed his refinery and then sat down and said to himself, it is all done, I am through. Will he still be in business...Look at how he has become a success. The noise is not about the contracts he advertises, nor the loans he took, not even the refinery as a project itself. All that umph has faded. The issue to him and us and this country is about the products he sells and the resources he realizes and the dominance he wields and to us the hope of a better energy experience. That is the point of all that. So for the customs to realize great revenue and hand it over to government to execute great projects, to me is just a tool, not the end and all of governance, if the revenues and projects do not cause this country to do I ate one thing or the other or prosper the citizens. To me, it is all about the money to them. Great news for those who are privileged to take our if it. |
Is there any reason why I should. I don't sink my teeth into rubbish in the name of food. This is for those who consume dangerous stuff or consume stuff dangerously. |
Exousiang01:So how did Uganda manage to have two....Uganda....Uganda. Just look at Nigeria in context to Uganda in every metric.,..it is such a shame. The so called fourth largest economy in Africa that last hosted an international sporting event how many decades ago. Even WAFU tournaments cannot be held here. We are too busy doing other things....chasing 'contracts' and diverting/siphoning resources. |
