As far as it concerns infrastruture in Abuja contractors almost always deliver. The level of expectation is far higher. This is not XYZ state government.

GEJ will soon set up committee to look into why the project fail.
What do you know about Abuja city infrastructure. Next to nothing I'm certain. But to your pleasure you personalise and politicise every damn thing including the s.hit that comes from the homes of ordinary folks. Why have we descended so low. Pity. Next I'm sure you will ask your party members not to buy property in Guzape in protest.

All this talk boils down to this part of the conversation.

We are still talking about a number of equipment, different kinds of helicopters that can be more appropriate to that kind of thing. But, what are our human rights considerations? When I got here about two years ago, there were discussions about the conduct of the Nigerian Army in the North-east about the treatment of the civilian population. It was reported in your media. This is not something we came up with.

“Nigerians themselves were focusing on it. So, we have had a lot of discussions with the Nigerian Army about the need to, as you fight terror, you also have to protect the civilian population and keep them on your side.
Of course and we are still shooting ourselves in the foot. Playing politics with governance. I continue to say that the state of a country correlates with the state of its people and nothing more.

That the USA Army is ranked if not the best in the world today is because of the attention their Heads of state paid to them,in terms of allocation and budget-if I'm not mistaken, their military budgets supercedes any other in the world, even though they manufacture weapons in their land,
Now the question is;
Why did the past leaders always allocate 'peanuts' to the military knowing fully well that their equipments are costly and are also sourced outside the country?
Nigerians and collective amnesia or should I call it the attention deficit of toddlers. Thank goodness you lot won't lead this country like the 'clueless' ones we are quick to criticise.

Abeg I was already on Nairaland (just a while ago) that Nigerians were frothing at the mouth about the 'huge' defence budget and agreed with the UN that defence budget be reduced to a smaller percentage of GDP in favour of education, health and others in order to attain the millenium goals. Was it not this same madam Ngozi Iweala working for OBJ who started the dis-investment and proudly showed us the figures every budget year.

Is it a wild coincidence then that Boko took one look at the fattened old professors 'chopping' fattened education budgets and declared with one voice, 'down with books' now give our sector back the cash. The sword must resume its might against the pen.

Hahaha. I laugh in naija.. Abeg who is going to square this circle and deliver my people from this conundrum. Now it is the spiteful civilians even willing to donate their 'widows mite' to their former tormentors to save them.

So security is now as important as education and without education you breed Boko.

Think about it and answer this new question:

Do you hate USA?
It is you guys who run there for salvation at the expense of your country that need to do the soul searching because one thing you're not is patriotic. At this point in time any true patriot will be deeply displeased with the actions of the US and if they persist will manifest in hate towards that country. We are not an island in this. Peoples of several countries have no respect for the US and so do I.

When we went into the Congo, Liberia, S/Leone, Mali we didn't ask them for anything or compel them to do anything. We went in solidarity, period. The US is not friendly towards us and they know it. They should just leave us alone.

Yes,true, but do u think in a standard military, there shouldn't be enuf equipment?...that u'll have to deploy everything and not have some permanently reserved for training purposes. Even if they had deployed everything to d front, don't u think d wise thing to do is to buy new ones to train your troops with?

If every AK47 was deployed to the NE, what would they use to train the fresh cadets?...see?...that's dsame reason why there is need to have reserved a reasonable number of every necessary military hardware for training purposes.
Good question. Ask why the military has been gutted and permitted to fall into decay. Simple. 30 years of military rule. In whose interest is a strong, well equiped military. No one. Not even the military itself. Who is responsible for this. We all are. That is our revenge against an institution that violated us in our youth. Now we need their strength to save us....once again.. Only simple minds will point fingers at individuals. Nigerians are all responsible.

Let me try to educate u still as I've got a brother in the war front (he's capable of taking care of himself though), the machinery are obsolete, Nigeria was ready to buy new ones for the training but the US refuse to sell and the NA is scared of air assault coz of high civilian casualty. Any country trying to help want to spite another one, the request for foreign military camps and all that. Whichever way you look at it, it's more complicated than you think so please go back to abusing the government and her supporters in the 'street' of social media as this is beyond your mental comprehension

Good luck!
Thank you. That is what we have been saying for months. That is what the new government will see then they will all shut up and work for the salvation of Nigeria. Talk is cheap and criticism is sweet to children. The US should just leave us alone. They have no interest in our survival and prosperity. It is their actions that speak louder than their words. We need training but we also need weapons. They go hand in hand.

The guys are so dumb.
Ok Buhari comes in and ''fights corruption'' by arresting people indiscriminately for 4 years then leaves and we go back to square one corruption returns with a bang, that is if he succeeded in chasing it away in the first place.
That is not how to fight corruption. Corruption is low in developed countries not because the people are saints, but because the institutions has made it absolutely impossible for them to embezzle public funds.
That is what GEJ is trying to do and he has succeeded in some sectors.
T
No. Government doesn't build institutions, people do. The fact that we have next to no functioning institutions has less to do with the government (we've always had governments), but the inability of the people to gel to form them. Institutions are built on the basis of recognised common values. No two Nigerians agree on any one thing so you cannot build a coalition. Take corruption for example. The EFCC will only work if the Nigerian can define corruption. Unfortunately we cannot. One man's corruption is another man's right to resource control or response to marginalisation or born to rule, or regional hegemony or politically reward aka settlement.

But to say that government with all its instruments of power cannot and should not attempt anything until it builds institutions is just disingenuous. I will continue to criticise knee jerk anti corruption crusades not for their effort but for their effectiveness. So the Jonathan government fails but much more than the Buhari government did in the mid-eighties.
Politics › Re: I Won’t Fight Corruption By Putting People In Crates –Jonathan by Reference(m): 7:30am On Jan 09, 2015
This is poor and in very bad taste. An incumbent should not be making such desperate statements. Yes, corruption is deep rooted and is inflammed by such structural problems that not superficial knee jerk reactions cannot ever touch let alone solve it but in his position and from his personal and communal background he of all people should understand the frustrations of well meaning Nigerians towards this social malaise and this will only inflame tensions further.

If the GEJ government loses power at the polls this will be the one issue that has driven it out. The government has done next to nothing about it both superficially and realistically.

Ideals for me are not reality. I live in the REAL HUMAN WORLD, when people pretend they are not envious it is either hypocrisy or delusional It is like saying human beings should not get angry or quarrel or fight. In the real world if yo put two children down and give them food they will check to see they are not "cheated" they will question why one has more meat or whatever. That is the most NATURAL human behaviour. Men(and women grin) want to have what their peers have

. Your "period" approach just suggests that you are opinionated and inflexible and ( in my opinion) you are also wrong. Envy is the most natural thing for a human and to say otherwise is like criticizing shit for smelling or to be a profound hypocrite.

Why the Period?? People will always have a different opinion. Everyone gets angry but not everyone is violent. To deny envy or jealousy is just hypocrisy. Envy is a fundamental part of human nature for which we try to find socially acceptable outlets like sport . For me envy is neither good nor bad just like fire it can build or destroy. Rather it is one of those emotions that presents challenges and opportunity for human development. Denial is not the way to manage it

The issue is not whether one experiences so called "negative" emotions but how one manages or channels them within the context of a "group" whether this be a family, community or nation. No normal person in the scenario described above will not experience self doubt or resentment that is NORMAL let us not pretend to be what we are not. I suspect part of the criticism would stem from the fact that it is a woman. Men do worse everyday and that is socially more acceptable
I am speaking about ideals here and shutting the door to excuses no matter who is doing them even me. The fact that many marraiges are faulty doesn't make it ideal. Envy is destructive, (sorry) period. If I envied my wife for any reason I have a conscience that will not justify or re-route it but will condemn me immediately. Those are the ideals we should seek. The institution of marraige is just too weighty to be burdened by personal emotions and individualistic ambitions.

I witnessed one recently, in fact i wanted to create a thread on this issue but the ops beat me to it.
One of my colleagues loved banking job and he was desperate to work in a bank for 3 years without success even though he read accounting. His wife read chemistry and immediately after her NYSC, she relocated to Lagos. She wrote an aptitude test conducted by a consulting firm on behalf of union bank and was successful. She went for the interview and for good 7months, they didn't hear from them again. The lady got one small job shortly and they got married. Precisely a year after my colleague's wife attended the interview, she was sent a job offer mail and was directed to report to the training school the following week with a start up salary of over 200k. My colleague first saw the mail cos he logged in to check her wife's mail. He announced to us in d office and suddenly his mood changed. I need to add that his immediate younger brother was also employed along with his wife by union bank. We were working in a private company with salary little above 100k. Being the kind of person he is, we all knew he was not happy about it cos what could hav caused a mood swing at a time he shld be happy. His mood remained the same nearly to d close of work. One of the big sisters in d office asked him why he was not happy, he just responded coldly that 'nothing'. Then sister B started telling him to forget d fact that he could not get what he has been struggling with over the years and that his wife got it. Destinies ar diff, may be not God's will for him, bla bla bla.
Whenever I climb upstairs to my bedroom I am never worried that one leg will become more muscular than the other. It cannot happen because I have never left one leg in the living room. Both of them will get there. Every motion is temporary.

Ahhh, Yes oooo. It happens very well. Especially when both of them are working class people and it is so prevalent these days. My friend was making the same complain to me, how his wife had a fight with him and was openly telling him they are in competition. Anytime properties are bought, she wants the property in her name. Immediately the guy began his Masters programme, she was feeling very uneasy and insisting she wants to begin too. I really wonder what marriages are turning into.
Don't misuse words. Those are not marrages. Those are business agreements. There are several kinds of human relationships defined by the parties concerned, how they run and what they produce. Marraige is the only one where both parties have constant emotional equilibrium. You feel what your partner feels. In most others the equilibrium is not with either party. Like in commerce, the more you smile the more your customer frowns, in employment the more the company smiles the more you feel cheated, etc.

Well generally speaking, I think it's okay to feel slightly envious (emphasis on slightly) but she must watch it! She must not give the devil (if any) a chance.
My dear it is not okay. It is not right, period. If indeed they are married it shows they are not a couple. How can one be envious of oneself. What I see are two people tugging in opposite directions. Though I am a strong advocate of the 'ladder climb' in family development (one gender moves up while the other supports, then the other gender behind moves past while the other supports), I cannot understand what the man is 'celebrating' for since his wife is 'left behind' and I cannot understand what the wife is mourning for if she knows its 'her turn' next and he will be doing the heavy lifting.

I'm sorry, I'm pro institution. I'm pro family and individualism is the worst killer of institutions. I repeat, they are not married or just pretending to be.

I know a lady whose husband was promoted as a project manager in an oil and gas company in Canada. The guy called us to come and celebrate with him because within two months of landing in Canada he got a job in the company that promoted him within 6 months of working with them. The wife on the other hand has been in Canada for 5 years. She initially came to study for her masters. When she finished her studies, she tried to get her permanent residency through Canadian Experience but she was told she did not have enough experience. She was advised to do menial jobs in order to get her papers, which she did. She got her papers through that avenue. She tried getting a job in her field but she has not gotten any yet only data entry or customer service jobs. She brought the husband to Canada and within 2 months of coming to Canada the guy got a job.
On the day of the celebration, she was complaining bitterly. She compared herself to her husband saying the guy does not even have masters. This surprised me. Can a wife be envious of her husband?
They are not married. There must be some other explanation and my hunch says its one of these arrangee-get-out-of-nigeria schemes.
