By Olasunkanmi Akoni and Monsur Olowoopejo Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has disclosed that 124 policemen died in encounters with armed robbers between January 2007 and September 2011. Fashola made the disclosure last Tuesday, at the 5th Town Hall meeting on security with the theme; ‘Rising the current challenges’, organized by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF, in Victoria Island. Cross section of Policemen who received the Bravery Award presented by the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) for participating in the operation to free some kidnapped victims and arresting the culprits during the 5th Town Hall Meeting on Security with the theme, “Rising to Current Challenges”, held at the Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday, November 22, 2011. He said the Town Hall meeting challenges the resolve made by the state Government in 2007 about securing the State and called upon everyone to acknowledge that crime is a threat to their businesses and their lives. Apart from enumerating the state’s unceasing investment to sustain security since 2007, Fashola stated that in 2011 alone, the state has provided 10 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), 60 high power motor bikes, 50 patrol vehicles and six boats as well as securing approval for five new Area Commands which it intends to build in 2012. “We hope that from this meeting, we will raise enough money to provide five hundred more vehicles, 200 more patrol bikes and at least, 20 more Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC)” he said. He told the gathering that the state government “lost a total number of 124 policemen in encounters with armed robbers between January 2007 and September 2011. We should honor their memory by pledging more support for their comrades in arms for, in spite of the dangers, the security personnel have continued to respond to distress calls once they were alerted”. He also commended the team of 21 police officers that “investigated and stormed the hideout of heavily armed robbers and kidnappers resulting in the arrest of three members of the gang, the rescue of three kidnapped victims and the recovery of a haul of dangerous weapons including rocket launchers”. He noted that the challenges of security and law are a growing threat all across the world. “The world is increasingly plagued by ideological, religious and economic challenges, and the countries like the United States, Britain, Greece and Italy, which used to act as shock absorbers receiving millions of immigrants are facing grave social and economic problems”. The governor recalled that when he assumed duties in 2007, the biggest single challenge to the realization of the dreams of the administration was posed by insecurity, saying that not only were lives being lost to crime on an almost daily basis in traffic, bank robberies and home invasions, the law enforcement personnel were neither equipped to fight crime nor were they motivated to do so. “The capacity we installed in 2007 has therefore become stretched. The vehicles have aged and need to be replaced. The demands are new, the methods of the criminals are changing and they are investing in their businesses in order to put our own lives and businesses at risk”. “I stand before you very proudly to assert that we have overcome many of these challenges. The road to progress has not been easy. It has demanded thousands of hours of hard work which we have gladly given. We have been greatly inspired by your support and sense of community in joining us to fight crime and preserve law and order. “The evidence of such support could be seen in the fact that our night life and economy is getting robust by the day and providing jobs for young people and investors in entertainment and hospitality. Many more businesses are opening and new hotels, restaurants, night clubs and cafes are springing up with the promise of more to come”, Governor Fashola said. He said government has complemented this by lighting up many streets of Lagos with power provided by diesel fired generators and the policemen are now better equipped to respond because they now have patrol vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers to fight crime. “Keeping them on the road to protect all of us requires hundreds of thousands of liters of petrol, diesel and other logistics. We are paying them an improved monthly allowance and those at the vanguard of responding to violent crimes now have a group life and accident insurance coverage”, the Governor stated. He warned all property owners who harbor criminals that if apprehended, the Certificate of Occupancy of such properties would be revoked while the property will be acquired for public use. Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Security Trust Fund, Chief Remi Makanjuola who was represented by his Vice, Mr Olusegun Kazeem, (DIG) RTD, said the greatest challenge facing the trust fund is about sustaining what it has built over the years. In a report of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Mr Fola Arthur –Worrey said the most pressing challenge of the Fund is sustainability and growth over the long term. Giving an update on the security situation in the State as well as current challenges, the State Police Commissioner, Mr Yakubu Alkali said from available records, the State Police Command could hardly boast of ten serviceable vehicles prior to the advent of the security trust fund. Mr Alkali stated that the story is however different today as the command is now the proud recipient of sundry logistics and financial assistance which has immensely boosted the capacity of the men to perform their duties. The Police Commissioner listed items which the command has so far received to include two helicopters, 30 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), 300 patrol vehicles including mobile workshop vehicles, five W-19 Fibre Boats fitted with double 75HP Outboard Engines, 100 Ballistic Helmets, 1000 AK-47 rifles, two million 7.62MM Caliber ammunition, 60 patrol motorcycles and 300 Walkie-Talkies. “Within the last few months, crime have not only been prevented, but have been cracked or nipped in the bud when committed. This is due to the quick response to distress calls and the scrupulous and diligent use of information volunteered by members of the public and tools at the disposal of the Police to do the job”. The Police Commissioner who buttressed his presentation with several reported cases of armed robbery and kidnap cases which the command foiled especially the one involving the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition from some criminals and release of four kidnap victims in Igando, an outskirt of Lagos. Special commendation Bravery Awards were presented to 21 police officers who have been very exemplary in confronting criminals. They include; the Commander of Police Mobile Force 2, Keffi, Superintendent Patrick Ejedawe, which led the team that secured the release of four kidnapped men, Superintendent Aba Kyari, Deputy Superintendent Ugar Udoh, Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP, Apochi Joseph, ASP Charles Onwuka, Inspector Bernard Benimare, Inspector Edward Iguma among others. They proudly received the awards and handshakes from the Governor and members of the Board of the LSSTF. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/a-l-a-r-m-i-n-g-124-policemen-in-lagos-killed-by-bandits-in-9-months/ |
Jordon Ibe, 15, set for highest level, says Wycombe boss Ibe was booked for celebrating his goal with members of his family Wycombe forward Jordon Ibe, the club's youngest Football League goalscorer, has been backed to become a Premier League star by his boss Gary Waddock. The 15-year-old netted in his first senior start on Saturday, a 2-1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday. "We just want to make sure he goes on and fulfils that potential he's got," Waddock told BBC Three Counties Radio. "And possibly, with the talent he's got, he could go and play at the highest level." JORDON IBE FACTFILE Continue reading the main story Born in London on 8 December 1995 Attracted national attention with eye-catching performances for Wycombe's reserves in the summer of 2011 He made his senior debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie with Colchester in August Handed his first senior start in a 2-1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in October He scores in the game, becoming the youngest Wycombe player to do so since the club entered the Football League in 1993 The Wycombe youth product had already made six substitute appearances for the Chairboys before the visit of the Owls. But the youngster, who attracted reported attention from Manchester United in the summer, rewarded Waddock's faith in him, scoring in the first half with a superb run and finish, 10 days short of his 16th birthday. "If it was a senior player you'd be saying 'what a fantastic goal'," the Wycombe boss continued. "He's 15 and to do that on your debut tells you the quality the lad's got. "He trains with us and we see the talent he's got every time he's in our training sessions, and why not [start him]? "I took the age out of it and looked at the player on merit and he deserves his chance. Did he take it? He certainly did." Ibe's jubilant celebrations were temporarily tarnished when he received a yellow card from referee Chris Sarginson for rushing over to his family, who were in the Adams Park stands. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/15519282.stm

Tottenham are ready to raid League One strugglers Wycombe Wanderers with a £500,000 offer for wonderkid Jordan Ibe. The schoolboy, who turns 16 in December, alerted a host of Barclays Premier League suitors when he scored a sensational strike against Sheffield Wednesday last month. The goal - which made Ibe the youngest-ever scorer in Football League history at 15 years and 355 days, created controversy after he was curiously booked by referee Christopher Sarginson after celebrating with his jubilant family. Manchester United, Liverpool and Fulham are all believed to have dispatched scouts to monitor him since but Spurs have jumped to the top of the queue and ready to bring him to White Hart Lane. Wycombe captain Gareth Ainsworth earlier this month urged Ibe, who has made four senior appearances so far this year after his debut in August, to stay put at Adams Park before leaving for a bigger club. 'Hopefully he can make a big name for himself,' Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio. 'But even more I hope he does it at Wycombe to start off with because we want to keep hold of players here. 'He's got all you could ever wish for in an up-and-coming youngster.' However, Wycombe, 23rd in League One, could be forced to cash in on Ibe's talents to bring in much need reinforcements to boost their survival bid this season. A COURT heard yesterday how a man assisted the Boko Haram group to bomb the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Suleja, Niger State on April 8. Ahmed Ezimakor told a Federal High Court, Abuja that he helped the sect to get detonators and cables that were used in the INEC bombing and the attack on the Christian Fellowship Mission, also in Suleja. Ezimakor, whose parents are Igbo, was born in Niger Republic, where he grew up. He said he was approached because he is a trained miner. But he denied knowing the tools were to be used for mass murder. The witness gave the testimony at the ongoing trial of six suspected members of the group before Justice Bilikisu Aliyu. The suspects are Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana, Mohammed Ali, Umar Ibrahim and a spiritualist, Musa Adam. They have pleaded not guilty to a five-count charge of criminal conspiracy and voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means slammed against them by the State Security Service (SSS). The alleged offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 97 and 248(1) of the Penal Code Law, and Section 15 (2) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Establishment Act 2004. Led in evidence-in-chief by the prosecution counsel, Thompson Olatigbe, Ezimakor said members of the group were trained in an uncompleted building in a market in Madalla, Niger State. He disclosed that he first met with the late leader of the group, Mohammed Yusuf, in Kuje prisons, Federal Capital Territory (FCT). “When I first encountered him, he preached the philosophy of Boko Haram to me and I was convinced. Boko Haram was initially not conceived to be a violent group. It was meant to preach peace, the teachings of Prophet Mohammed and the Qur’an,” he said, adding: “I believed Yusuf especially when I watched his debate with one of our leaders in Bauchi. It was a video debate and that changed my thinking and I became his apostle. I took an oath to remain loyal to him, but after his death, I broke the oath.” According to him, the group turned violent, following the murder of Yusuf. He said members were illegally trained in weapons handling and using AK 47 assault rifle by Ibrahim Bashir Madalla, who is still at large. “After the Maiduguri crisis in 2009, we were called by one Bashiru Madalla in Madalla that there was a message for us and that the message was from our new leader, Mallam Abubakar Shikau. I declined because I was no longer a member of the sect because I broke the oath I took with Yusuf, but the first accused person whom I know in Niger Republic where I was born led other members to Madalla. “The message was to give them training so as to revenge what happened to their fellow members. So after the training at Madalla, we parted ways.” In his own testimony, another witness, Mohammed Dalhatu, said he procured the detonators and delivered them to Abubakar (first accused). Under cross examination by the defence counsel, Emeka Okoro and Nureini Suleiman, he told the court that he did not know the purpose for which the detonators and the cortex wire were bought by the accused persons. The accused persons are alleged to be the brains behind the April bombing at the INEC office in Suleja, Niger State, where 16 persons including serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members died on the eve of the rescheduled National Assembly elections. The accused persons also allegedly conspired with others at large to cause grievous bodily harm by unlawfully planting deadly substances which led to the death of another three persons at a political rally in Suleja. They also allegedly detonated explosives which resulted in the deaths of three police officers in Dakna Village, Bwari. The alleged offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 97 and 248(1) of the Penal Code Law. |
