SAMUEL Uzochukwu Emelike A.K.A. J-Gangs like every youth of his generation dreamed of becoming a successful rap artiste. *Late Samuel Uzochukwu Emelike Having walked the streets in search of his destiny, he found solace in Famehouse records, an outfit set up by Leo Isi-Irabor, a German-based businessman who was desirous of helping budding musicians like J-Gangs to achieve their dreams. With his album in the production oven, heating and awaiting to be released, young J-Gang a twin born to parents of Igbo extracts, twenty eight years ago with three sisters decided on November 7, to visit his family back home in Benin City, Edo State. That journey was a fertile journey, a journey that killed a dream and leaving on its trail, sorrow and tears. J-Gang was murdered by a gun toting robbers who invaded their peaceful abbey street, G.R.A, Ugbor home at about 7.30pm on November 8. He was the only one shot by the robbers. And just as he seemingly predicted in his yet to be released album, J-Gang sang “Even if I don’t see today, with all the rhymes in my book with all the tracks in my disc, my work will see tomorrow” Narrating the story to Weekend Groove, a member of the family who witnessed the incidence said “the armed robbers who were two in number found their way into their home after overpowering the security whom they dragged along to the sitting room where we were all watching the television. As soon as they came in, we were ordered to lie on the floor. It was the commotion inside that attracted the heavily built musician from the boys quarters where he was sleeping. As soon as he rushed in, he was also ordered to join us,” our source disclosed. And just before the robbers began their operation, our Uncle who owns the house arrived at the gate. When nobody answered to his call to open the gate, he came down from his car. But he retreated and escaped when the second robber appeared with the security man. Alarmed that they may have been found out, the robbers attempted to escape. It was at that moment that one of them robbers shot and killed J-Gangs who was lying on the floor.” Were the police alerted, we asked? Yes, they came within minutes, by this time the robber had made good their escape. He was buried last weekend.Reacting to the news of his death, Famehouse Records General Manager, Ken Sele-Okogbenin said “it is sad that such should happen at a time like this. J-Gangs was a really talented songwriter, singer, rapper and producer. We at Farmhouse records saw huge potential in him and had no doubt that he was heading for stardom, as he was a rare gem amongst his peers. He had already cut some potentially record breaking dance floor hits, and his first single was due for release in February 2012. J-Gangs would never accept anything short of excellence; He refused to use the Nigerian local music scene as his parameters, and would work tirelessly to perfect his act to international standards. Everyone at Famehouse Records knew J-GANGS was heading for an international breakthrough, but unfortunately now, we knew this could happen.” Famehouse Okogbenin said “will be setting up a foundation in his memory, and series of awareness programmes will be run to shine light on his life and to bring attention to the issues of crime in our society and the way forward for the Nigerian youth. His singles ‘Rap in peace’ from his Forever album will be released in the following weeks. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/felled-by-robbers-bullet-artiste-dies-on-eve-of-album-release/ |
Aregbesola: One Year After The Rauf Aregbesola administration clocks one year in office this weekend. This piece examines the achievements of the administration against the background of the expectations of the people. OGbeni Rauf Aregbesola, will be one year in office as Governor of Osun State this Sunday. The question is being asked, what difference has he made in the lives of the people of the State of the Living Spring? The question is coming against the backdrop of the fact that the governor came into office with a lot promise having assumed office on the pedestal of ‘progressivism’. He came into office on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). The last one year has been quite eventful in Osun State as the government has tried to put smiles on the faces of the people especially in critical areas such as agriculture, youth empowerment, education and tourism. Aregbesola Only recently, the state government organized a retreat for top officials in the state to see how far the Aregbesola administration has gone in terms of the implementation of its six points Integral Action Plan and chart the way forward. Governor’s programmes “The retreat delivered more than what we the organizers thought about”, Mr. Femi Ifaturoti, the Director-General of the Osun State Bureau of Social Services which is in charge of monitoring the implementation of the Governor’s programmes said at the retreat. “The retreat afforded the executive arm of government and the top echelon of the administration the opportunity to share the vision of the governor. It was a melting point and battle of ideas during the retreat. It created a robust opportunity for the people in government to know how programmes are being run in various arms, especially the O’TOUR, O’REAP and O’YES. During the retreat, people saw the passion of the governor for the state and people left the retreat fired up”. Also speaking on the retreat, the vice chancellor of the Osun State University, Osogbo, Prof. Sola Akinrinade, said the major agenda was geared at driving the state forward. “The government, through the retreat, planned for its success, planned so that there won’t be failure from any side of government”, the vice chancellor stated. He pointed out:“The critical issue is just moving from planning to implementation and that is the challenge I am going to give the government.” Assessing the achievements of the administration in the education sector, Akinrinade said: “We must commend the intervention of the present government in the education sector, because things have never been done this way before.” “The attempt to rehabilitate and remodel our schools right from the primary level to the tertiary level is something commendable. I believe that if the plans that have been put in place are aggressively pursued, they will change the education sector totally. The impact of these laudable efforts may not be seen in the next two years but, in the long run, the people of Osun State will see that a solid foundation has been laid for the education sector in the state”. According to him, the model schools being built, courtesy of the Aregbesola administration, at the primary and secondary levels are efforts aimed at transforming the education sector in the state, and an attempt to put facilities and infrastructure that will match the aspiration to create an administrative system that could serve the purpose of the 21st century.” Beyond the accomplishments in the education sector in Osun as testified to by Akinrinade are the land marks in the agriculture, youth empowerment and tourism sectors where the governor is using O’REAP, O’YES and O’TOUR respectively as the tools of revolution. O’REAP, according to Ifaturoti, is a major programme focusing on food production in the state. “We have done much in the area of agriculture and food production in Osun State”, the director general of the Bureau of Social Services said. He stated further: “We started in February this year and let me say O’REAP is focused on food production with much interest in food crops. Osun State strategy is to capture 10 percent of the food bill of Lagos State. By that I mean the foods that are sold and bought in Lagos State which by today is estimated at N3.5 billion.” “The administration has made agriculture a good drive for economic transformation of the state. Mr. Governor said agriculture is over 50 percent of his promise to the people of Osun. All the six points Integral Action Plan of Governor Aregbesola centres on agriculture. The whole aim is to use agriculture as the key engine for economic transformation in the state of Osun. We have fertile land in Osun, we have commodity areas where we can build national competitiveness and one of those areas is rice. Research has shown that Osun can actually be a market leader in the production of lowland rice and not even upland rice. We also have competitive advantage on cassava, vegetable and okro and even live stock, because, if you look at Iwo, you will see that there are livestock development opportunities in that area.” Ifaturoti sees Osun becoming the food basket of the South-west and indeed Nigeria courtesy of Aregbesola’s O’REAP “This year alone, we have done about 7,500 acres of land, I don’t think there is any other state in the South-west that has done that ,”the director general of the Bureau of Social Services said.”We are 90 percent through with 49 kilometers rural access roads in the state. “We have had over 300 co-operative societies registering for the O’REAP programme because the governor believes we must use co-operative as the major driver for the agricultural transformation of the state. Now, we have farmers gathering together to form co-operatives for food production and marketing. O’REAP programme is a business of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Ministry of Commerce and other ministries. “We had experts in the field of public administration and that is the paradigm for development globally. No agency can do things alone. We need a number of agencies working together. If for instance we need water in the farm settlements, we will go to the Ministry of Water Resources, if we need power, we go to the Rural Electrification Board, if it’s roads, we consult people in the Ministry of Works and Transport. So, in the transformation of a state, the work cuts across the various parastatals and agencies of government. So, what is important is to have a very strong co-ordination of all these efforts and a sharp capacity in the ministries to drive the transformation agenda.” Farmers, according to him, are at the centrepiece of the O’REAP programme. “Roads are constructed to the farm settlements and we are making life meaningful and comfortable for farmers. The road to Mokore farm settlement is now under construction and this road has been abandoned in the last 40 years. So, farmers are to benefit more than any other people in the O’REAP programme of the state government”, Ifaturoti added. For O’TOURS, it is built by the Aregbesola government on the strategy of drawing people to Osun natural heritages in the traditional festivals like the Osun Osogbo and Olojo in Ile-Ife. “We are ancient people and we work on history. Osun State is the centre of gravity, of Yoruba history”, Engr. Abimbola Daniyan, Team Leader, O’TOURS, stated .Daniyan added: “Yoruba in all parts of the world, either in Brazil, Cuba or America, cannot do away with Osun State because of its rich cultural heritage. Government intervention On government intervention to take over Osun Osogbo festival fully, Daniyan said it is the duty of government to expand the economic and social space such that the benefits of culture can translate into economic benefits to a very large segment of the society. During the last Osun Osogbo festival, the Team Leader of O’TOURS said the state government introduced toilets for sanitation and provided security at the groove and in all parts of Osogbo. “We also have tourist centres like Jalumi and Kiriji war sites which are the results of our history and we are going to develop them to make them attractive to tourists. We also have Ayikunnugba water fall in Oke-Ila. These are wonderful natural settings that already draw in people, but the point is to make it draw more people to the state, so we are going to develop them to international standards. We have the duty to satisfy our tourists and we have to be careful so that we don’t send wrong information to them, hence the need to develop them well.” On O’YES, designed by the Aregbesola administration as a youth empowerment programme and to stem unemployment, one of the 2,000 volunteers who earn N10, 000 per month said, “The impact of O’YES is enormous”. But he will like the state government to consider the volunteers for permanent employment rather than the status quo which affords them participation in the scheme for one year. The scheme costs the state government 200million naira every month. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/aregbesola-one-year-after/ |
The Benue State Police Command early in the week recorded a major breakthrough in its renewed onslaught against crime when it arrested a notorious gang of arms dealers who specialize in the supply of arms and ammunition to crisis prone areas of Jos the Plateau state capital. The gang whose stock in trade was to supply locally-made but sophisticated weapons to the feuding parties in Plateau state were apprehended while hauling the arms to Jos through Benue State. *The suspects with the recovered items. Obiako stressed that the confessional statements of the accused revealed that they have been in the business over a long period of time and were making brisk business out of the venture. He noted that the arrest of the suspects was made pursuant to a directive to all area commands to tighten the noose on criminals in the state with a view to ensuring that all those involved in any form of criminality were brought to book. The Commissioner of Police said, “We are alive to our responsibilities and also determined to fight crime to a stand still. “Benue State Police Command has therefore declared total war on those who are bent on perpetrating crime in the state; we will not spare anyone because we will continue to be diligent and total in this renewed onslaught. “Let no one be deceived by his or her social status in the society because the law is not a respecter of any person and, of course, the Police will not hesitate to apprehend anyone said to be involved in crime or found to be aiding and abating criminality in the society”, Obiakor added. Confession time Ahungwa, the-gun-manufactur Meanwhile, the leader of the arrested gang, Mr. Justin Abugieya who hails from Obudu local government area of Cross River State confessed to Crime Alert that he supplies arms to one Makzeta in Bassa LGA of Plateau State for onward distribution to the feuding parties in the state. Abugieya explained that he ventured into the business out of frustration after his house was burnt in the recent Jos crisis. “I started doing the business after I lost my property and belongings in the Jos crisis and I had nothing to fall back to”. He said he has been sustaining himself and his family through the business but however regretted his actions, “It’s all in a bid to sustain my family that I am doing this business”, he added. Items recovered from the gang includes; twelve single barrel guns which he sells for N15, 000, three locally-made revolver pistols which he said, goes for N25,000 and two locally-made barreta pistols that goes for N80, 000. Arrest of gun runner Another major catch by the Command was a gun manufacturer,Terkura Ahungwa, who resides in Koti-Yough, Vandeikya local government area of the State. The suspect who was apprehended with his gun making tools and some finished products said gun making was his specialty from where he ekes his livelihood. Mr. Ahungwa disclosed further to Crime Alert that he has been in the business for over 10 years now, adding that he manufactures guns for vigilante groups in the area. He stated, “This is the only business I do in my life”. Commenting further, the Commissioner of Police decried the high rate of criminality especially amongst youths in the state regretting that the state has in recent time, witnessed an upsurge in crime in major towns. The Police Commissioner disclosed that over 51 youths within the ages of 28-30 were already in police custody for various crimes assuring that his men were on top of the situation. He blamed parents for this development, maintaining that they have failed in their responsibilities to check the activities of their children and wards. Mr. Obiako warned that the police would not spare anybody no matter how highly placed who is caught in any crime especially during this ember month. The police commissioner also frowned at the high rate of car theft in the State involving government owned vehicles. He also decried the abuse of these vehicles which he said were usually seen parked in odd places at night. According to him, “only recently, three vehicles were parked at a filling station and they were stolen. It was discovered that they were government vehicles. One was however recovered. In all, we have recovered 7 cars including one belonging to a police officer that was stolen from Abuja and brought to Makurdi”. He therefore urged government drivers to either park the vehicles in their offices or at secured places. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/how-benue-police-nabbed-jos-crisis-gun-runners/ |
THE Federal Government said it has concluded plans to establish Trade and Investment Councils with six advanced countries across the world as part of renewed efforts to make Nigeria the preffered investment and manufacturing hub in sub-Saharan Africa. The Minister of Trade and Investment Olusegun Aganga, disclosed this at the weekend during the Rivers State Investors’ Forum tagged “Change that Works.” Aganga, Investors know that Nigeria has the right kind of market that they need He said the new initiative would act as a vehicle to channel big, transformative investments into Nigeria and strengthen the country’s balance of payment position in the global market place. He said, “to enhance the level and quality of foreign direct investment, we have created trade and investment desks in Nigeria’s main embassies across the globe. We have also agreed with the relevant authorities to make it possible for genuine investors to get multiple entry visas in their home countries or visas at the point of entry.” To be able to fast-track this process, the government has inaugurated the Australia-Nigeria Trade and Investment Council in Australia during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Australia last month. The Ministry of Trade is now looking at replicating this for six other advanced economies. Aganga said “I was in China last week on the invitation of China’s Minister of Commerce. And from our discussions, the Chinese companies are excited about the investment opportunities in Nigeria. “We have also been able to secure firm commitments from the Chinese government to make Nigeria a preferred manufacturing hub for Africa.” The long-term targets of the investment climate reform programme drive of the government are to increase Nigeria’s creditworthiness by 10 places in the next 10 years; increase Investment level by 300 per cent by 2015 (increase of $8.9 billion); reduce the level of poverty in Nigeria through the creation of more jobs; increase global competitiveness ranking by 75 points in 2015; improve Nigeria’s Ease of Doing Business ranking and match South Africa’s ranking in the next 5 years and to be in the top 5 in sub-Saharan Africa by 2015, Aganga said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/fg-plans-investment-councils-with-6-developed-nations/ |

Dutse—Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, Thursday, expressed concern that some people in the North had turned Islamic religion into a profit-making venture, noting that business and religion are two different things that cannot be mixed . The governor spoke in Dutse at the swearing-in of the new Grand Khadi, Muhammed Inuwa Ali. He expressed bitterness that some adherents were behaving as if Islam came into the country in the last 10 years of democracy when it was not so. He said: “It is funny that some people are making Islam look as if it was introduced into the country in the last 10 years of democratic dispensation when some sections in the country started introducing Sharia, which was turned into an international debate.” Lamido further lamented that Islamic faith has been turned into a platform for arguments between clerics who are supposed to be the custodian of the religion. He noted that, if there were drug-addicts, thieves, or those who commit adultery among other negative vices, religious leaders should carry most of the blame because such vices were signs of their failure to inculcate the noble teachings of Islam into the mind of the youths who are victims of the vices. ’’In Islam, nobody is above the law, it does not matter the person’s status politically or otherwise. ‘’Therefore, in Islamic religion, a leader does not have immunity, if you act contrary to Islam and if you are guilty; you are guilty,” he said. Lamido then charged Islamic clerics to guide and advice leaders positively no matter the circumstances, as according to him, human being as leaders also have their short-comings. He advised Muslims to rise up to defend Islam like their counterparts of other religions who have been championing the cause of their religion, stressing that Muslims should fear God and go back to Him so that they can get his blessings. In Jigawa state we stand up for Islam, we continue to defend Islam, and we shall die for Islam”, Lamido stressed. He however, advised the new Grand Khadi to do everything humanly possible to defend the cause of Islam, explaining that he had the support of his government in achieving the best result. Responding, Alhaji Ali promised to uphold justice in all his endeavours, by discharging his responsibilities without fear or favour. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/lamido-blasts-islamic-extremists/ |
There was a woman who was arrested by the EFCC around July 2009, and was detained at the Okotie-Eboh detention facility. While in detention in the custody of the EFCC, the woman was impregnated by an official of the EFCC. By the end of November and early December of 2009, the lady reported the incident to the officials of the EFCC. She disclosed the identity of the operative responsible for the pregnancy. She revealed also the details of how she got pregnant. Ephraim Emeka Ugwuonye, Esq. 310 Watkins Pond Boulevard Rockville, MD 20850 USA. Email: emekaugwuonye@aol.com November 16, 2011. Mohammed Adoke, SAN The Honorable Attorney General and Minister of Justice. Federal Republic of Nigeria, Central Business District, Abuja. Petition against Mrs. Farida Waziri and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC]: The Dark Secrets of the EFCC. Dear Attorney General, I hereby bring to your attention a crime, and cover up committed by the officials of the EFCC with the active connivance of the Chairman of the EFCC, and I request that the incident, and series of events surrounding it be investigated by your office. According to her revelations, the EFCC official would come to the cell each night and would take her to the EFCC offices where he would have unprotected sex with her against her consent. After About two months of this pattern of activity, the lady got pregnant while still in custody. EFCC conducted test on her and determined that she was indeed pregnant and that she got pregnant while in its custody. To cover up this incident, the EFCC quickly filed a charge against the woman and arraigned her in court. During arraignment, the EFCC lawyers on instruction from the EFCC leadership requested that the lady be remanded in Kirikiri instead of continuing to be remanded in the EFCC cell. Once the woman was remanded at Kirikiri, the EFCC successfully covered up the incident. The officer involved is still working in the EFCC. No disciplinary action was taken against the officer. The officer in question is known. He has injury on one eye and wears glasses. The reason Mrs. Waziri and her top officers chose to cover up the incident was because they felt it would attract adverse publicity to the EFCC under her watch. She would rather continue with the false and well massaged image of a well run and well functioning organization. Dear Sir, the issues involved in the case of this woman are of fundamental significance for your duties as the chief law officer of this country. It is your duty to ensure that all agencies of Government comply with the law and constitution. And where there is credible or investigatable theory of crime or a credible complaint of a systemic violation of the constitution or an official cover-up, you have the duty to act. In this instance, even though I am not able to provide you yet the name of either the detainee in question or the particular EFCC officer involved, you do have sufficient information to request a reaction from the EFCC. Such information, now at your disposal will enable you to ask the following questions: 1] Looking at the list of EFCC detainees between July and December of 2009, was there an inmate that got pregnant in custody? The mere fact that a detainee got pregnant while in custody is enough to trigger an investigation. 2] There is an EFCC detective with bad eye, and who wears glasses. He worked in, or had continued access to the Okotie Eboh cell between July and December of 2009. 3] There was a pregnant detainee who spent five months in detention at Okotie Eboh cell, who got charged in December 2009, and remanded in Kirikiri prison after it was known that she was pregnant. 4] Please ask for the list of detainees who tested positive for pregnancy during the time they were in the custody of the EFCC. The Honorable Attorney General, I understand that this petition raises grave issues, and should have been disclosed with specificity the identities of the victim and the officer that perpetrated the crime of rape. But this incidence involves a massive cover-up by the EFCC. In that situation, it is through hard work and diligent effort that so much information as I have disclosed herein could be possible. It will require an officer in your position to conduct the kind of inquiries that could bring out the facts that have been so carefully suppressed by the EFCC officials. The significance of the incident in question must not be lost upon your office. As is well known in law enforcement circles, cover-up and obstruction of justice are worse than the substantive violation of the law. If the EFCC covered up a case in which its officer raped, and impregnated a detainee in the custody of EFCC, there ought to be an investigation and appropriate measures or prosecution. I realize that your office has made several efforts to regulate the activities of the EFCC. Your testimonies during your confirmation hearing in the Senate eloquently explained the frustration you have suffered in your dealings with EFCC under the leadership of Mrs Waziri. However, the situation may be, you remain the Attorney General of Nigeria. You have certain duties and responsibilities that go with your office. Do not sweep this petition under the carpet. Thank you kindly. Sincerely yours, Ephraim Emeka Ugwuonye Esq. http://www.elombah.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8898:efcc-official-impregnated-a-female-detainee-and-covered-it-up&catid=31:general&Itemid=69 |

Recent figures by Opera Software company, show that Nigerians are first in Africa and fifth largest users of Opera Mini browsers in the world. With this latest ranking, Nigeria has surpassed more tech-savvy countries such as the United States and China. More than 140 million people used Opera Mini last month, with usage growing 83 percent in the last year. As of October 2011 Opera Mini usage has doubled eight times since its introduction. “Opera Mini has gained users in every country, across 2G, 3G and 4G networks, across feature phone and smartphones,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “What these numbers won’t tell you is that many people use Opera Mini as their only means to get online. We’re seeing a whole new generation of people connect to the Web for the first time using a mobile device and we are only starting to see the changes — societal, technological, and cultural — that will happen as a result.” According to StatCounter, internet browsing from mobile phones in Nigeria grew by over 25% between October 2010 and October 2011. In the same period, according to StatCounter, internet browsing from desktops decreased by more than 25%. Nigeria has an estimated 93 million mobile phone users, and is ranked as having the largest mobile subscriber base in Africa. A key information in the StatCounter data is that Opera Mini browser is the most popular mobile internet browser in Nigeria. About 90% of Nigerian users of mobile internet browsers use Opera Mini. The upsurge in internet browsing from mobile phones among Nigerians has been explained as due to the fact that accessing web content from a mobile browser is much cheaper than accessing the same content for a desktop. According to recent figures released in October 2011 by Opera Software, Nigerians, first in Africa and fifth largest users of Opera Mini browsers in the world, have surpassed more tech-savvy countries such as the United States and China and Brazil. http://tekedia.com/30048/nigeria-moves-opera-mini-mobile-browser-usage/ |
