Paiko (Niger) – The Minister of Youth Development, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Friday gave conditions for banks and other organisations to engage National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. Abdullahisaid during a visit to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Paiko, Niger, that the organisations must sign agreements to give jobs to such corps members at the end of their national service. “We will stop the supply of corps members to banks and other organisations until they give us the guarantee that they will employ them after their service year, “ the minister said. He said that a situation where corps members were meant to go through the fear of insecurity of joblessness after the service year was unacceptable and would be addressed holistically. Abdullahicalled on NYSC members not to be deterred by the recent security challenges in the country, saying it was a temporary situation that would soon fade away. “This uniform confers some privileges on you but how did we get to this stage that this uniform is now the one exposing you to danger? This has nothing to do with NYSC as a body but it has to stop.“ He said that NYSC had come to stay irrespective of calls by some people that it be scrapped, adding that in spite of the security challenges, the country had a lot to celebrate. The minister commended the National Assembly for taking the decision to reform the scheme, pointing out that aside being a vehicle for national integration, the country had many things to derive from the scheme. “We can turn NYSC around to make corps members stand on their own, and this is what the present administration will do’’. The minister urged corps members to be part of the solution to reform the scheme, stressing that as from 2012, corps members would start serving their fatherland in the true sense unlike what obtained currently. Abdullahisaid that the scheme had exposed NYSC members to the complexities and diversity of Nigeria. “If not NYSC what will bring most of you here? You can see how amazingly beautiful Nigeria is which the core objective of NYSC is,“ he said. He said the scheme would develop the leadership quality and capacity of corps members to make them self-reliant, adding that the issue of looking for white collar jobs would no longer be a priority. Earlier, Mrs Fadimatu Mohammed, the Coordinator of NYSCin Niger, said that the corps members had established a high sense of discipline since they resumed and had remained peaceful. She, however, appealed to the government of Niger to give the scheme a new and permanent site. A total of 1,775 NYSC members, consisting of 1,008 men and 767 women, registered for the orientation programme. Nigeria ‘ll Crash If Subsidy Stays – Jonathan! By Paul Odenyi, Abuja President Goodluck Jonathan has predicted that Nigeria would crash if the Federal Government failed to act fast by removing subsidy on petroleum products. But some members of the National Assembly and the Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole said Nigeria will not break up beacuse of fuel subsidy. According to a member of the House of Representatives, Bimbo Daramola, who was among members of the house who met with Jonathan to discuss the issues of Boko Haram and removal of oil subsidy among others, Jonathan said that Nigeria would ‘’crash’’ if the subsidy on petroleum products was not removed. Daramola made the revealtions in an interview with Saturday Vanguard in Abuja, adding that those at the meeting at the Presidential Villa were not sufficiently convinced by what Jonathan told them as reasons for removal of fuel subsidy. He said, “Mr. President did not sufficiently convince me or my other colleagues in the House of Representatives. I don’t want to be graphic with what happened there but I am telling you that it was a faux pau. ’’I do not think he achieved any purpose. I do not think he moved the story forward. I would say that his reasons did not appeal to Representatives.” ’’He tried to say and indeed made it clear to us that if he does not take out the subsidy, Nigeria will go down. In his own words, Nigeria will crash. ’’I do not think that was the right thing to say but I believe very strongly that the nobility of the intentions of Mr. President may not be questionable. ’’Like he said, it is not about Goodluck Jonathan it is about Nigeria. We are on the same page on that score. The truth of the matter however, is that there are so many ways that lead to the market. ’’His strongest argument was that it was becoming difficult to sustain the high subsidy regime on fuel products. He said if we go on this way, Nigeria will be in deep trouble. In his words: Nigeria will crash. ’The truth of the matter is that well we need more money, but there are many ancilliary issues that will to be sorted out. Removal of subsidy is not an isolated event. ’’This is an economy that is mono product – driven and we would expect that anything that happens to this product will resonate across the length and breadth of the country. ’’What the President did was all rationalization. He said the guys who move the product to the market donot actually use Premium Motor Spirit, PMS; that they use diesel. These are simplistic rationalizations. ’’He also tried to say that the subsidy we are talking about does not profit Nigerians but a pocket of cartel in the industry. And people immediately rose up to say, Mr. President, why are you saying this. ’’If it is a cartel, you crack it. Abdul Ningi I remember said it clearly that he was the most powerful President in the black world, and that is the truth. And if we are confronted by a cabal or cartel, then it is about time we dealt with the issue decisively. ’’And today, we are trying to give this reason for taking such decision that will affect the masses of our people. ’’He also tried to talk about the issue of bunkering that is also being resolved and all that. People also said okay, if you take out the subsidy what becomes of the amount of money you may eventually raise. ’’He tried to tell us that there is a committee that is headed by the Vice President (Namadi Sambo) and they are working on what will be committed from the revenue from the removal of subsidy and that they have gone 80 percent and all that. ’’For me, that is not sufficient to begin to push this idea of removal of subsidy. The strongest of the arguments is pure simplistic rationalization. Issues like the removal of subsidy must have cogent, articulate, verifiable, clear cut argument for and against. ’’You must be able to say, yes if you do this we gain this and that. Abdul Ningi tried to raise the political and security consequences of the push particularly at a time when the Arabian spring and all that… Removal of subsidy should not be left in the realms of conjecture and simplistic rationalization.’’ 2012 budget not in the National Assembly …. On the 2012 budget which was yet to be submitted to the National Assembly, Daramola said, ‘’Absolutely, it is not in the National Assembly. I think also that that meeting was preparatory to that. And I think he wants to send it in within the next two weeks. ’’If the budget comes in December at a time we are almost closing for the year, you can imagine what will happen to it. That is another recipe for failure. ’’I keep talking of the leadership of the new House of Representatives, because we are determined to ensure that we do a thorough job. ’’I am also hoping that it would pass at the House and that the Senate will concur, that a law comes into force to compel the President to present the appropriation bill, three months before the end of the year. ’’But this year we may have to deal with this budget the way it is coming. And you will not expect that parliament will be rail- roaded or ridden rough shod. ’’We will take our magnifying glasses to look at the final prints of this budget. And this might run us uptill February or March. My brother that is the scenario.’’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/nigeria-%E2%80%98ll-crash-if-subsidy-stays-jonathan/ |

Ohanaeze Warns Boko Haram! No Jonathan No Nigeria! Ohanaze Youths have warned the Boko Haram sect that, any further attempts to subvert the sovereign position of Nigeria under President Goodluck Jonathan, will necessitate the redefinition of safety lines as was in the case of 1960’s. Issuing this warning during a press conference at Amawbia, Anambra State yesterday, to protest the nullification of Hon. Tony Ezekwelu’s election, a member of Board Of Trustees of the Ohaneze Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Okwu, said that if Jonathan is frustrated out of power, Nigeria will cease to exist. According to Okwu, “It is time we allowed those dully elected by the people to rule. The case of Hon. Ezekwelu, whose mandate was taken away from him in an unjust judgment, can be likened to our President’s. We therefore state that if there is no Jonathan there will be no Nigeria”. Also protesting the nullification of Ezekwelu’s election, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), represented by its Vice President, National Affairs, Comrade Frank Nwandu, said that the group was shocked to learn that the Justice Yetunde-led panel cancelled what he termed a free and fair election, pointing out that NANS considers it a conspiracy and perversion of justice. Similarly, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) National Youth Leader, Comrade Ogbonna Okpara, said that the nullification of Ezekwelu’s election was disgusting to all stakeholders in APGA and demanded that the mandate be returned to the original winner. It will be recalled that the Justice Yetunde-led elections tribunal, sitting in Awka, nullified Tony Ezekwelu’s election on the November 10 and awarded it to Action Congress of Nigeria’s Barr. An Osogbo Senior Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 28-year-old nursing mother, Taye Joseph, to seven days of community service for stealing a carton of indomie. The convict was to be kept in the custody of Ataoja Police Station in Osogbo from where she was expected to be coming to clean the court’s premises for seven days. Senior Magistrate Olusola Aluko, however, gave an option of N300 fine for each of the seven-count charges brought against the convict. http://lindaikeji..com/2011/11/nursing-mother-jailed-7-days-for.html |

A mother who force-fed her baby girl who later died has been jailed. Gloria Dwomoh, a 31-year-old nurse from Walthamstow, London, was sent to prison for three years after being convicted of allowing or causing the death. The 10-month-old, named in court as Diamond, was forced to take solid foods from the age of six months. She died in March 2010. The Old Bailey heard Diamond died from pneumonia caused by food in her lungs that had blocked her airways. Dwomoh, who was convicted last month, had denied the charge. The trial heard the defendant, who worked at St Thomas's Hospital near Waterloo, was obsessed with Diamond's weight and as she was weaning her on to solid food, used a jug to feed her liquidised food, including meat and cereals. During the trial, Andrew Edis QC, prosecuting, said the food went down the "wrong way" for months and the spout of the jug was placed into the girl's mouth to "prevent her closing it". "If you have a child who is distressed and choking, you do not carry on," he said. During her trial, Dwomoh told the court she and her siblings had been fed the same way by her mother in Ghana. "I didn't do anything to her," she told the jury. "I didn't do anything at all to hurt her." However, the Common Serjeant of London, Judge Brian Barker, said forcing her daughter was against "her natural instincts" causing her "daily distress". "At best it was a misguided obsession - but a determined obsession - which must have caused daily prolonged distress to your daughter," he said. "It cannot be described as an act of kindness. "It took away her life and that is something you must live with." Trevor Burke QC, for Dwomoh, told the court she had been "punished enough". "She has endured the loss of her child for over a year," he said. He presented the court with a 1,000-signature petition from family and friends pleading for mercy, and asked the judge to impose a suspended sentence. Her supporters had demonstrated outside the the Old Bailey. A serious case review found "weaknesses and shortcomings" in the actions of some agencies involved with the family, said Laura Eades, chair of Waltham Forest Safeguarding Children's Board. "Had best practice had been followed, the risk to Diamond of force-feeding would have been better recognised and the family would have been offered further support and intervention," she said. "This should have reduced the probability of Diamond being subject to behaviour that proved, in this case, to be fatal." However, the report concluded Diamond's death "was not predictable". http://lindaikeji..com/2011/11/baby-force-feeding-death-mother-gloria.html#more |

By Olasunkanmi Akoni LAGOS — Armed robbers in Lagos State went desperate in the early hours of Wednesday, as they held residents of Sebotimo Street, Mangoro, Agege Local Government Area of the state hostage and forced those without cash to issue cheques. The robbers, mainly teenagers, went away with huge sum of money, handsets and other valuables. Other victims were even asked to go to ATM spot to withdraw sum money. The robbers, according to a victim, who is a photo-journalist with one of the major dallies, stormed the area at about 2 a.m, ransacked almost every building in the street and subjected them to harrowing experience at gun point. One of the victims (names withheld) told Vanguard that they made frantic phone calls to the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad special number, 767, but there was no immediate response. “It was after the robbers left that the policemen came blaring sirens,” he said, adding: “The robbers were armed with shotguns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.” The criminals, he explained, were young men between the ages of 17 and 20, adding that they invaded the area when there was no public power supply. He said: “When they came into my house, they pointed a gun at me, demanding money. When I told them that I had none and that I am a poor messenger in my office, who will not be paid until end of the month, they forced me to write a cheque. I started by writing cheque for N30,000 but they asked me to make it N40,000, which they collected and left. In the process of writing the cheque I made several errors as a result of the tension.” The robbers later escaped through a canal. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/robbers-go-berserk-in-lagos-force-victims-to-sign-cheques/ |

…insists on equal fare regime in W-Africa By Kenneth Ehigiator & Olasunkanmi Akoni LAGOS — As negotiations on the controversial London route continues between the Federal Government and its British counterpart, the Nigerian authorities have rejected offers put forward by the latter, including a 20% reduction in the price of the lowest business class ticket to London. This came as the ultimatum given British Airways to facilitate restoration of Arik Air’s slot on Abuja-London route expired yesterday. Vanguard gathered that Arik Air will now also operate seven frequencies from Abuja to London, instead of the five it hitherto operated, which were suspended on October 29 as a result of the current crisis between Nigeria and the UK on the matter. Ongoing negotiations between both governments, triggered by the intervention of British Prime Minister, Mr David Cameron, was occasioned by the muscling of Arik Air off the route, which compelled the federal government to also slash British Airways frequencies in Lagos from seven to three. Vanguard gathered, yesterday, that the negotiating team of the British government offered to cut the lowest Business Class ticket by 20 per cent, which the Nigerian team rejected outright. Consequently, the Nigerian team was said to have asked for an outright dismantling of the regional imbalance in the fare regime of British Airways and the other British carrier, Virgin Atlantic Airways, which gives the British carriers unfair advantage over Nigerian carriers on the route. Vanguard gathered that the Nigerian team wanted equal fare regime that would confer a balance arrangement for citizens of both countries. ACN backs FG Meanwhile, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has said it fully supports the Federal Government’s stance on the issue of full respect for the Bilateral Air Service Agreement, BASA, between the country and Britain. In a statement in Lagos, yesterday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party specifically hailed the way and manner the issue has been handled by the Aviation Ministry, which has responded in kind to the shabby treatment meted out to Nigeria flag carrier, Arik Air, in Britain. It said:’‘’If British airlines must fly to Nigeria unhindered, under the framework of the BASA between the two countries, then Nigerian airlines must fly to Britain without hinderance.” Any move to the contrary is an attempt by one party to gain an unfair advantage over the other, and must be resisted to the hilt,’’ it said. ACN added: ‘’The explanation by the Minister of Aviation that the face-off between the two countries is more about respecting the spirit and letter of the BASA between them, than any other consideration, gladdens our hearts, as it shows that Nigerians as well as the country’s corporate citizens can be sure that their government will stand up to defend their rights when necessary. ‘’This is in consonance with what our party has always said: That the government must stoutly defend Nigerian citizens at home and abroad, to ensure that their dignity is not trampled upon anywhere. This is the only way our country and its citizens can stand tall in the comity of nations.’’ The party said the government must not relent in its ongoing efforts to ensure that Nigerian airlines flying into Britain are not shortchanged, and also use the opportunity presented by the development to carry out a holistic review of the Bilateral Air Service Agreements entered into with other countries, with a view to ensuring full respect for such pacts. It said at a time the Jonathan administration is committing many unforced errors, to use a tennis parlance, due to poorly-conceived policies, the action of the Aviation Ministry represents what his government can achieve if it will only allow itself to be guided by the national interest. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/fgba-face-off-nigeria-rejects-britishs-20-fare-reduction/ |
