Armed Cameroon Protestors Ask President Paul Biya To Go!

YAOUNDE  (AFP) – Armed men dressed as soldiers fired into the air and stopped traffic in south Cameroon on Thursday, demanding the departure of long-serving President Paul Biya ahead of a controversial poll, reports said.

The men fired their weapons at the main bridge in Douala, the economic capital of the west African nation that will hold a presidential election on October 9, according to media reports and law enforcement sources.

Cameroon Radio-Television (CRTV) described them as members of an unidentified armed group which held up traffic on Wouri Bridge for two hours. A local official and other sources said just one man was responsible however.

The governor of Littoral province, Fai Yengo Francis, said in a statement: “At about 6:00 am (0500 GMT) an unidentified individual, armed and dressed in military uniform, disrupted traffic on Wouri bridge.

“Thanks to the swift reaction of public order forces, under the supervision of the administrative authorities, the assailant was pushed back and traffic resumed.”

The governor said there were no casualties and reassured locals that efforts were being made to track down the gunman.

An unnamed taxi driver said: “I saw an armed soldier on the bridge. He had blocked the traffic and was asking people not to pass. He had a placard which I saw with ‘Paul Biya dictator’”.

CRTV meanwhile reported exchanges of fire between a group of men and the defence forces, “which forced the defeated assailants into the water,” the station said.

The outburst comes as tension builds in the country ahead of the elections which 78-year-old Biya, in power since 1982 and one of Africa’s longest-standing heads of state, plans to contest.

On Tuesday the country’s main opposition party, the Social Democratic Front, (SDF) denounced what it said were irregularities in the organisation of the poll.

“There is a whole mountain of irregularities,” Evariste Fopoussi, the SDF’s pointman during the campaign, told AFP, citing double entries or missing names in electoral rolls as well as delays in preparation.

Civil society movements accuse Biya of having locked down the electoral system to ensure that he is returned to power.

Cameroon’s Supreme Court has validated 23 candidates for the presidency, including Biya and John Fru Ndi, the veteran opposition candidate of the SDF.

Tinubu, Fashola In Fresh War …as Lagos Gov Cripples Ex-gov’s Businesses!

Hitherto hidden cracks have begun to emerge in LagosStatein the relationship between Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola and his predecessor in office, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s,Global News can exclusively confirm.

Before now, there had been a bit of niggle between them but they made up in the run-up to the last gubernatorial election in the state. Then, Fashola was in the mood for anything just to emerge as Action Congress of Nigeria’s flag bearer, and so he met Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s demand to sign Alpha Beta, the latter’s company, to be responsible for collecting taxes in the state. Several billions of naira, which included the company’s 10 percent commission for its services to Lagos State Government that was being held back by Fashola, was let go. The governor also promised to be of ‘good behaviour’ subsequently.

However, if what happened then warmed Tinubu’s heart, it pissed Fashola off, and now he is not playing the good godson. Less than 100 days into his second tenure, Fashola and his godfather are not getting along fine with each other. Their friendly disposition in public in recent times is just to keep up appearances. Beneath the pose is genuine bitterness. That is how bad things have come between them.

Sources told Global News that since Fashola returned to office, Alpha Beta’s 10 percent commission of the N18billion, which it generates for Lagos State Government through tax revenue every month, is yet to be paid by the state government to Tinubu. An application by the company to the governor for the release of the money, which runs into N3billion, was also sat on.

Fashola’s refusal to pay Alpha Beta may be in retaliation for Tinubu’s disposition towards authoritarianism. A two-faced democrat, the Asiwaju, who is the leader of the party, imposed his cronies on governors in all states Action Congress of Nigeria controls. This even caused a stir inOyoState, where ACN members took to the streets to protest the party’s leadership lack of internal democracy. InLagosfor instance, nearly all members of Gov. Fashola’s cabinet were foisted on him by Tinubu.

This retaliatory action by Fashola has depleted Tinubu’s finances considerably. It has also made Tinubu, a big spender, to cut down on his spending to align with his present financial position.

One of his companies recently bore the brunt of the cuts. Asiwaju, few days back sacked some workers in one of his media companies, National Life, with a hint that about 20 more people would soon follow. He also declared that the paper, which was  a daily paper  has now changed to  twice a week.

Perhaps, something else contributed to the ugly situation in National Life.FormerLagosStateInformation & Strategy commissioner, Dele Alake, who is the intermediary between the investor, Tinubu, and Louis Odion who conceived the paper, took the rogue’s route when he diverted a large chunk of the seed capital. This made the paper to start on a shoestring budget.

This same Alake almost messed up another of Tinubu’s businesses, Continental Broadcasting Service, the parent company of TV Continental and Radio Continental, when he was the MD|CEO. He was arbitrarily helping himself to the company’s money, expanding in every direction, acquiring properties in Lekki and Ikoyi, and funding his children’s education in American universities at the expense of Continental Broadcasting Service that was struggling to build physical structures for its operations. Salvation later came when he was removed and one Mr. Lemmy took over from him.

Meanwhile the Godfather Bola Tinubu is  alleged to be battling strange ailment and he was said to be flown abroad days back for further treatment.

Some of his aides said that the illness is stress induced while some also alleged that the way his godson treated him may have aggravated his problem.

Politics › How Customs Officer U.b Yahaya Is Using His Position To Steal. by Relax101(op): 11:16pm On Sep 29, 2011
The nefarious acts of many of the country’s uniformed men sometimes make one take the men of the underworld as priests. There have been many cases of excess by these men in uniform that have resulted in the death of many innocent Nigerians. It is on record what they sometimes do to one another; the recent incident between the police and soldiers in the Badagry axis ofLagosis still fresh in our memory and the talk of Badagry brings to mind many atrocities some men of the Uniform commits in their quest to get quick money.

It has come to our notice the activities of one Customs officer who was formerly manning the Gbaji check point along theLagos-BeninRepublicroad somewhere after Badagry inLagosState. The man in question, an assistant comptroller of the Nigerin Customs, has the name U B Yahaya tag on his uniform and he’s said to have formed the habit of seizing goods without taking them to the Customs general warehouse.

He recently seized some goods said to be in the region of N7 million apart from the clearing levy from one, Prince Dapo Adenigbagbe, a Customs Licensed clearing and forwarding agent.

According to Adenigbagbe, it all began on the 1st of March this year when he was returning from Seme in Benin Republic, from where the goods were sent by the agent that freighted it; the goods consisted of 700 pieces of Jeans trousers which were in a bag and 1638 pieces of Polo T-shirt that were in 3 bags.

The agent who said the contents of his bags were dutiable items, claimed that the customs at the first check point searched the goods and after they realised they were not contraband, allowed him to leave, only for Yahaya, who is an Assistant Comptroller of Customs, to stop him few feet away from the check point and ask one of his boys – one Tahiru – to start offloading the bags. After that he put the wears in sacks totalling 14. Yahaya then told him he should pay N50,000 for each sack; the total money demanded from him being N700,000. When he tried to plead with Yahaya, the Customs man declared the goods would be taken to the warehouse in Ikeja. Prince Dapo Adenigbagbe was satisfied as his goods were dutiable goods.

He explained further that his next trip to the place the following morning to confirm when they would be moving his goods to the warehouse, was when he got to realise that a red Ford bus came to move some goods that had been seized by Yahaya before his. They included 150 gallons of vegetable oil, he said. By the time he got there on the fourth day his goods were said to have been moved to the warehouse. He decided to check at the warehouse but was shocked when he was told his goods had not been brought there after he was shown the log book.

He said subsequent effort to get his goods proved futile as the log book showed the goods were never brought to the warehouse. This prompted him to report the case to the police. After that he asked his lawyer to write the Comptroller of the Lagos Federal Unit, and after that the Lagos Comptroller called Yahaya to report to office where Yahaya confirmed seizing his good and that of others which were not reflected in the log book at the warehouse. The comptroller then asked Yahaya to go and sort himself out as he had brought all that on himself.

“I was surprised when after that time the lawyer who had collected money from me to charge the case to court started foot-dragging. This aroused my suspicion that money must have changed hands over the issue as before that, the policemen also revealed to me that Yahaya is a friend to their boss and so they cannot do anything about it. It has been six months since the incident happened and this has forced my clients to start using other agents as they believe I connived with the customs in defrauding them.

“Secondly, though Yahaya has been transferred to Agbara from Gbaji, I’m still afraid for my life to pass through that area because Yahaya used to be a soldier before converting to Customs and he still has his house in Ibereko Baracks where he once suggested we meet before I turned him down as that barracks was where a DPO and DCO were killed sometime ago.

“I was informed that Yahaya is very influential and this was confirmed when nothing was done on the letter I instructed my lawyer to write to the Zone 2. So that has been my dilemma over this issue,” explained Prince Adenigbagbe.

Investigation into the activities of the customs official involved showed that Yahaya is actually a very wealthy property owner. He was discovered to be the proud owner of two Filling Stations close to the border, one house in Festac, one inKano, a hotel inAbuja, two other houses inLagosand some other properties scattered around.

Activities of people like Yahaya have sent many people to their graves as the money used in buying some of the goods seized were through loans. They are also depriving the government of billions which should have been in the government coffers as revenue end up in individual pockets. It is bad that in a country where we are preaching zero tolerance for corruption some corrupt government officials will be treated with kid gloves as people like Yahaya are supposed to be dismissed with all their properties seized rather than being taken from one border post to another.

Politics › Former Afribank And Bank Phb Mds Paid N800m And N650m Into Their Pockets. by Relax101(op): 11:11pm On Sep 29, 2011
It is no longer news that the Federal Government through the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) assumed ownership of Afribank, Bank PHB and Spring Bank via the “Bridge Bank” mechanism following the revocation of their licences by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This means the three banks will still be open to customers and continue to operate normally under the control of three bridge banks created by the NDIC to assume their assets.

The bridge banks are Enterprise Bank Limited, to assume assets of Spring Bank; Keystone Bank Limited, to assume assets of Bank PHB; and MainStreet Bank Limited, which will assume assets of Afribank.

But what many people did not know is that contrary to the CBN Governor’s claim that the banks are not healthy and had not shown all necessary capacity and ability to recapitalise before the September 30th given to them by the CBN to recapitalise, before the former managing directors of Afribank and BankPHB respectively finally quit the banks, they were alleged to have approved and paid to themselves the sums of N800m and N650m respectively as severance allowance for the job they took over in August 2009 when the CBN put the hammer on Union Bank, Intercontinental Bank, Finbank, Oceanic Bank, Afribank and BankPHB, and injected N620b as bailout for failing to pass the stress test conducted for them by CBN. The reasons given for the takeover were undercapitalisation and mismanagement.

Many see the actions of these bankers as gross indiscipline, given that they were asked to steer the banks back to healthy position. Their acts since taking over the banks however show that they are all out to run the banks aground. It was further learnt that the bank directors that served with them also laughed away with money alleged to be running into millions of naira each.

This is a wicked and callous action, concerned shareholders said about the severance packages alleged. Stakeholders were unhappy that those being paid off were unable to get the banks recapitalized before the withdrawal of their licences and takeover by the Asset Management Company ofNigeria, AMCON.

The two banks MDs have been accused of corruption and gross misconduct for spending the banks’ money recklessly and lining their pockets with billions of naira.

Before now, Afribank has had a running battle with its staff, who complained of gross malfeasance on the part of the management. A whistleblower has petitioned the EFCC over the actions of some executive directors who they are accusing of undermining the wellbeing of Afribank.

The petition, which was addressed to Farida Waziri, the Chairman of the EFCC, is dated March 27, 2011. It was received and stamped April 11, 2011, by the office of the EFCC chairman. The petition alleged that the executive directors were involved in a N1.2 billion scam barely two years after they assumed office. Also, an addendum to the first petition dated April 17, 2011, and signed by the whistleblower, described how the scam in Afribank was being perpetrated: “Christopher Anammah, executive director, Institutional Banking, instructs the group financial controller at regular intervals to make funds transfer to a designated branch Inter-Branch Account ostensibly with the tacit approval of the group managing director. When the money is transferred into the destined branch, Nimat Munir, a courier, who is an Afribank staff in Wealth Management Department based in Abuja, is instructed by the executive director to encash the monies and deliver same to the executive director at his hotel room in Abuja.”

It was further learnt that prior to this, the executive director would have travelled toAbujato await and collect the cash. “The lady is said to be a mere courier who was acting out instructions issued to her and completely innocent of the scam. Oftentimes, these monies are wired through Afribank Burean De Change, where the monies are converted to Dollars,” the petition said.

“Your investigations should reveal how they have perpetrated these without infringing on the relevant Central Bank ofNigeria, Forex/Bureau De Change regulations. Whatever happened to these monies afterwards, your guess is as good as mine and I am convinced your investigation should reveal.

Politics › Tinubu Allegedly Collecting N200 Million From Assembly Allowance –how Oando Boss by Relax101(op): 11:02pm On Sep 29, 2011
Recently the public was awash with reports of the arrest of the of the Lagos House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, over allegations bordering on corruption and abuse of office.

The petitioner stated that Ikuforiji used his position as Speaker to collect a monthly running cost of N500 million on first line charge. In the last 14 months, he was said to have collected not less than N7 billion, which he has been funnelling abroad to buy properties through proxies and his automobile company called Brown Motors, located at 2, Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way, Maryland, Ikeja Lagos, adding that Mr. Ikuforiji committed perjury by denying his record of conviction in his INEC forms submitted in 2007 and 2011, whereas he had been convicted twice in the United States, in 2001 and 2005.

Though the Speaker has been released from the EFCC’s custody, the allegation has not only dented his image in the political landscape, it has rubbished his posture on good governance and rule of law.

However, those who are in the know claimed that the Speaker could not have perpetrated the fraud without the support of the Lion of Bourdillon and godfather ofLagosStatepolitics, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who is facing corruption charges with ICPC for operating a foreign account while serving as the governor ofLagosState. The source who craves anonymity stated that the Speaker is remitting whopping sum of N200m to the former governor on a monthly basis just to secure his political future, especially his ambition to become theLagosStategovernor.

This is not the first time the former governor would be mentioned in this kind of fraud-related act. It would be recalled that a group known as Concerned Citizens of Lagos had levelled allegations of corruption against the former governor, accusing him of grabbing lands ofLagosStateusing front and proxies that include the boss of Oando Petroleum, Wale Tinubu, and that he has so far converted over N500bn worth of land inLagos.

The group claimed that Tinubu used his position to acquire No 4 Oyinkan Abayomi (formerly Queen’s ) Drive, Ikoyi, a five-bedroom detached house on one acre of land, which was a Lagos State Governor’s guest house since 1979. The C of O was signed and released to him by Fashola in 2007 shortly after he assumed office. The property is valued at N450 million.

Also his residence at26 Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi was initially falsely presented as Oando Plc guest house. Later, he purportedly bought it from Oando, and used public fund to rebuild and renovate it. Recently, theLagosStategovernment bought the property and paid an undisclosed sum to him and thereafter gave the property back to him under the bogus Pension Bill he signed to law shortly before he left office in 2007. The property is worth over N600 million

The annex of theLagosState Guest House in Asokoro,Abujawas bought by the State Government in 2006 for N450 million purportedly to protect the main house from security breach. Shortly after he left office, the property was transferred to him under the pension plan he signed into law before he left office. Not only this, the 250 hectare land valued at about N35 billion strategically located at the Ajah junction on Lekki Road which was initially meant for a General Hospital for the people of Eti-Osa local government was stolen by Tinubu and handed over to Trojan Estate Ltd, a company owned by Deji and Wale Tinubu, to develop as Royal Garden housing estate at the expense of the tax payers of Lagos.

He is also said to have acquired 1,000 hectares of land valued at about N75 billion located at Abijo at Ibeju-Lekki LG and given it to LCC, which is part owned by Tinubu and Fashola and being developed as a golf course and housing estate by Assets and Resource Management Ltd (ARM).

A prime land of 157 hectares with 2.5km of Atlantic beachfront valued at about N10 billion was stolen by Tinubu from the communities of Siriwon, Igbekodo, Apakin, etc in Ibeju-Lekki LG and given to Ibukun Fakeye, his crony, to build a golf course and luxury villa with little or no compensation to the villagers. In addition, Tinubu paid $20 million (N3 billion) public funds to Ibukun Fakeye to commence the project in late 2006. Fashola has since released additional funding for this project, which is not owned by the state government.

A one-acre Parkview, Ikoyi foreshore land valued at N1 billion reclaimed byLagosState Government is now owned by Bola Tinubu. While in office, he also allocated to himself the former Strabag yard beside theLagosStatesecretariat at Alausa, Ikeja.

Another is a choice property at Lekki-Epe road on which he built and owns the multi-billion naira Oriental Hotel and the extension of a multi-storey car park beside it. Also is the multi-level recreation centre by Mobil in Oniru Estate on Lekki-Epe road, which he jointly owns with ARM and Tunji Olowolafe. All these assets valued at over N25 billion were obtained without paying a kobo to the Lagos State Government.

Tinubu and Fashola sold the following primeLagosproperties to their personal friend and front, Prince Dipo Eludoyin, at very ridiculous prices:

* The 3.8 hectares oflandofLagos State Fisheriesoffice in VI (beside theInstituteofOceanography) valued at N3 billion.

* The Fishery landing jetty at Badore (where the Ilubirin fishermen were to be relocated) valued at N500 million

* The entire Ogudu foreshore scheme initially earmarked for low cost housing scheme valued at N5 billion.

* The Ilubinrin housing estate (which used to houseLagosstate civil servants and judges up till 2007) valued at N2.5 billion.

* The former Julius Berger yard at Oko Orisan, Epe valued at N450 million

Tinubu raised a loan of N4.7 billion on Eko Akete Project on which nothing was achieved before he turned around to sell the property to his Chagouri friends of C & C and Hitech Construction Ltd at a ridiculously low price at the expense of the taxpayers ofLagos.

Tinubu expended over N5 billion ofLagostax payers’ money on theBarBeachshoreline project and no further work has been done by the concessionaire to develop theAtlantic Cityproject which was claimed to have been over-subscribed. It is suspected that the N5 billion will soon become a complete waste given the temporary nature of the shoreline protection. The Federal Government in 2005 offered to handle this project at no cost toLagosbut Tinubu refused because of his personal interest and greed.

Tinubu applied to personally purchase the Federal Secretariat building while in office. When he couldn’t get to buy it, he directed Fashola to stop the eventual owner of the complex from developing it. The complex is presently wasting away courtesy of theLagosStategovernment.

It took several months of horse-trading and underhand payments before Gov Fashola could allow the new owners of 1004 flats to redevelop the complex.

Several other buyers of Federal Government properties and developers in Ikoyi, VI and GRA Ikeja were forced to succumb to the outrageous demands of Tinubu, Fashola, Commissioner Abosede and other officials of the Lagos State Physical Planning Ministry and were made to pay ridiculous amounts into private accounts before their redevelopments were approved. Those who refused or were unable to pay could not develop their properties. This is a major economic strangulation of property developers and has contributed largely to the skyrocketing rents in Ikoyi, VI and Lekki axis.

Tinubu is said to have converted all the plots of land where Lagos Polytechnic was located at Ikosi near the old toll gate. He chased away the polytechnic in 2006 and went ahead to locate the choice plots to himself, his cronies and political associates. The headquarters of Television Continental (TVC) which is owned by him is located there. He deprived the youths ofLagosof decent education because of his greed.

Tinubu single-handedly sold the prime land on Aboyade Cole, VI that was recovered from some allottees, to UACN Properties Plc. The amount of the proceeds is shrouded in secrecy

Use of land and properties to buy favours from public officials

This is an act of usingLagosprime land to buy favours and corrupt public officials. This act was perfected by Bola Tinubu as governor and has now been inherited by Gov Fashola.

Several prominent Nigerians in the judiciary, police, INEC, and other sensitive agencies have obtained prime land from Tinubu and Gov. Fashola over the years without paying a kobo. Many of them had turned around to sell the land to third parties at substantial profit.

Many top officials in the police, INEC and the judiciary who participated in the 2003 and 2007 elections and tribunals in states where Tinubu has interest were compromised with parcels of free primeLagosland and cash. If the Lagos State Lands Bureau could publish the names and identities of beneficiaries of land from year 2000 to date, the scandal that would result is better imagined. Gbenga Ashafa and Mrs. Awofisayo are the conduit through which these acts are being perpetuated. Both are also personally involved in various dubious land transactions on their own.

Prime land and properties have been used to pay off public officials who are personally close to Tinubu and Fashola for ‘job well done’ or for being privy to sensitive information.

* Dele Alake, former commissioner for Information and Strategy, was sold a whole house onAlexander Road, Ikoyi where he lived as official quarters at a giveaway price.

* Rauf Aregbesola, AC Osun State governor, also got a detached house at Ladoke Akintola st, GRA Ikeja for the “good job” he did while serving under Tinubu.

* Yemi Cardoso and Wale Edun, both former commissioners, were sold houses on Iru Close, and other locations in old Ikoyi at giveaway prices by Tinubu. The list is endless.

Gov Fashola was Tinubu’s Chief of Staff from 2002 to 2007. He was a part of these scams, running errands for his boss to perpetrate these corrupt acts. He has since taken over as governor and has continued with these acts.

Gov Fashola in the wake of the petition against him presented by “The True Face of Lagos” to the House of Assembly, succeeded in buying his way out of trouble, albeit temporarily, by bribing each of the 40 members with cash and prime state land at Abijo GRA, off Lekki-Epe road. In addition, he bought a N40 million bullet-proof jeep for the Speaker in a desperate bid to ward off investigation by the Assembly.

These corrupt acts have deprived the taxpayers ofLagosbillions of naira which could have been used for public projects. Indeed, the prime land stolen from the Lekki axis is enough to build the Lekki-Epe road without burdening residents and other taxpayers with a 30-year concessional toll road.

These and other allegations are what Tinubu is going to strive to exonerate himself from, especially in his current trial by the Code of Conduct.

Bishop Oyedepo’s Convenant University Denies Muslim Students Admission!

By Omobolaji Omoyele

The dream of Mr. and Mrs. Taiwo Salami of Ijaye Housing Estate at Pen Cinema Agege, Lagos has always been to give their children the best education that will eventually make them useful not only to themselves but also to the society at large.

So when their son, Ayomide Abdul Gafar Salami, began preparation to seek admission into a tertiary institution, they took their time to assist him in choosing a university that they believe would instill the best moral and academic development in their son. They (the couple and the boy) decided to choose Covenant University, Ota. “We want the best for our child and we found that the university is one of the best in the country. Apart from this, it ranks as one of the most peaceful and disciplined tertiary institution in the country which is devoid of the dreaded cult activities which have turned most Nigerian universities campuses into abattoir, hence the decision to settle for Covenant University,” Mr. Taiwo Salami, an employee of Eagle Paints at Agidingbi, Lagos explained why he and his wife, devoted Muslims, settled for Covenant University, owned by a fiery Pentecostal Christian organization, Living Faith Christian Ministry a.k.a Winners Chapel.

Everything went according to plan at the initial stage. Ayomide sat for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination after filing the admission form online conspicuously choosing Covenant University as his choice of tertiary institution and Chemical Engineering as his choice of course. As a mater of fact, it was his father who filled the form on his behalf.

When the result of the examination was released by the examination board, he passed out in flying colours, scoring 295 marks which was actually the second highest mark scored by students who picked Covenant University as their tertiary institution of choice. Pronto, the boy applied again online for the post-UME test which took place at the university campus. It was another conquering outing for him as he scored 65 marks out of the obtainable 80.

Two weeks after the result of the post-UME was released, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) released the school certificate examination result and again Ayomide had an excellent result. Check it out: English Language, B3; Mathematics, A1; Further Mathematics, A1; Geography, A1; Chemistry, B2; Physics, B2; Biology, B3; Agricultural Science, B3 and Economics, B3.

“We took the WAEC result to the university because we filled awaiting result for him when we filled the admission form and the result was accepted. When we were filling the admission form, there was a confidential form we were asked to print out for the pastor of the church the family attend to fill but since we are Muslims, we printed out the form and gave it to the Chief Imam of the Ijaiye Housing Estate Muslim Association who duly filled the form and we submitted it along with the admission form and other documents. After the post-UME test, the pastor was expected to write a letter of recommendation on the student which the Chief Imam duly did and we submitted to the university authority. So when our child passed the JAMB, post-UME and WAEC examinations, we were sure of his admission,” Mr. Salami told The Premier.

But it was not to be. When the university released the first batch of candidates admitted, Ayomide’s name was conspicuously missing. “I made enquiries because naturally I believe my son’s name should appear on the first list on merit due to his performance. We were told to exercise patience as his name will come with the second batch list. It was while going through The Nation newspaper on 31st August, 2011 that I discovered that the second batch list for admitted candidates had been released but again our son’s name was missing. I even searched for his name from other courses thinking he might have been given another course other than the Chemical Engineering he applied for but it was quite clear that his name was not listed,” Salami narrated.

It was a disturbed father who called his son on what transpired during the post-UME examination and Ayomide replied that nothing unusual happened. “I asked him how he got to know that the obtainable mark was 80. He replied that all the total questions were 80 in number. I asked him again how he got to know that he scored 65. He replied that the exam was computer- based that it was marked immediately they finished and the scored displayed on the computer. I asked him further what transpired after the examination, he replied that they were given bio-data forms to fill which he did,” Salami said further.

He was determined to know why his son who performed so brilliantly was not offered admission; hence he asked his wife to go to the campus and enquired on what happened. “I wanted to go myself but my tight schedule will not allow me,” he said.

When Mrs. Salami got to the campus, she met the admission officer addressing parents whose wards were not offered admission. He told them that the university has only vacancy for students offering Education courses. “My own case is different. My son scored 295 in JAMB, scored 65 in post-UME and had distinctions in all his subjects but was not offered admission,” she narrated to the admission officer who expressed seemingly genuine interest in the matter and asked her to follow him to his office.

The admission officer confirmed what Mrs. Salami told him but later told him that the problem was that the candidate filled Muslim/Anglican on the religious space provided on the admission form. The woman was perturbed. She asked the admission officer if her child would be denied admission simply because of error in filling the religious space. It was a big shock to her when the admission officer told her that the university authority had decided not to offer admission to Muslims because the 12 Muslim students they took previously gave the school authority problems. The woman asked that if the university authority knew it is not offering admission to Muslims, it should have been indicated in the admission guidelines. It was a livid Mrs. Salami who left the admission office and laid an official complaint with the Vice Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Aize Obayan. She promised to look into the matter. “But we were surprised later when the Personal Assistant to the VC, one Mrs. Salami, called my wife and informed her that the admission officer had convinced the VC why Ayomide would not be offered admission but she did not tell us the reason given by the admission officer,” Salami said.

It was a herculean task getting the side of the university. The Premier was first directed to the PA to the VC, Mrs. Salami who also directed us to the Admission Officer. At the initial stage, we were informed that he was not on sit but later we spoke with him on phone. In the first instance, he declined to give us his name saying he does not know the reporter hence he was not obliged to mention his name.

On the issue at hand, he explained that the university admits Muslim students saying Ayomide’s case was different because there was an error when the admission form was filled. “In the space reserved for religion, he filled Muslim while in the space for denomination he filled Anglican and we felt we cannot allow this. One should be honest, if you are a Muslim or a Christian let us know your true religious status. However, the parents should have written a letter to the university authority correcting this error but the mother was impatience as she was just abusing us,” he said.

But Ayomide’s father debunked this. “I filled the form myself and there is no way I filled Muslim/Anglican. We are Muslims and we have never hidden that fact from anybody. My son attended Dansol High School in Ogba, a private secondary school with strict Christian background but this kind of thing never happened to him. All we want is good education for our child and that is why we chose Covenant University,” he said.

The bone of contention is can a student be denied admission on religious excuse? A university don at the University of Lagos cleared the air. “So far it is not a theological university, the National University Commission (NUC) which regulates the operation and activities of universities in the country, frowns at religious discrimination in the admission of students into the universities be it private or public,” the lecturer said.

The don stated that even if the admission form was filled in error, the university authority should find ways of explaining to the parents and things to be done and not wait until the parents came to enquire. “Moreover, it is not good to deny student outright admission on such excuse which I believe is flimsy,” he said.

The Premier investigation however revealed that this is not the first time such act of religious intolerance would occurred at the university. About two months ago, the university sought applications from prospective lecturers in the university. One Fatai Akinpelu applied to be considered for employment as a lecturer in the Department of English. According to our source, he excelled in all the tests and interviews conducted by the university only to be informed at the end of the day that he could not be offered employment because he was an Alfa, that is, a Muslim cleric.

A student of the university told us in confidence that he had to lie that he was Christian before he could be given admission. “I’m a Muslim and my roommate is a Muslim. I know some Muslim students who go into hiding before they pray. It is not a lie. You have to be a Christian before you are admitted,” the student told The Premier.

However in the case of Ayomide Salami, the father has vowed to fight the issue to a logical conclusion. “I’m writing officially to the NUC, the Federal Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies. After this, I’m taking the case to court. This is an injustice I’m fighting to a logical conclusion,” he vowed.

Sports › Ideye Wins Third Mvp Award In Ukraine by Relax101(op): 6:28pm On Sep 29, 2011
In-form Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye bagged his third man-of the match award at the weekend in Dynamo Kiev’s goalless draw at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The former Ocean Boys striker had earlier in the season bagged the award on his debut against Oleksandria were he grabbed a brace and Obolon where he also scored a second half brace.

Ideye revealed to Complete Sports before his team’s departure to Israel for their Europa Cup clash against Maccabi Tel Aviv that though he was happy with the recognition after the game but the result got from the top of the table clash was not what they aimed for.

“We did very well in the encounter but we were unlucky,” the former Sochaux hitman began. “We needed the point from that clash to regain the lead at the summit.”

Shakhtar and Dynamo are tied on the same points but with a superior goal difference of one and he believes that his Dynamo will be aiming to win games with a higher margin to unseat the six-time winners of the Ukrainian league. He added: “I want to win the league with Dynamo Kiev and play in the Champions League.”

He further stressed that the Guinean will be no match for the Eagles in the forthcoming clash African Nations Cup qualifier in Abuja.

“We know the importance of the game and we won’t toil with it. They won’t escape in Abuja,” he said.

Sports › Siasia: Joel Obi, Emenike Will Destroy Guinea by Relax101(op): 6:26pm On Sep 29, 2011
Eagles Coach Salutes On-Form Duo

FOOTBALL:
Super Eagles head coach, Samson Siasia says the dazzling form shown by the team's duo of Joel Obi and Emmanuel Emenike in the last few days has given him renewed hopes that the Syli Nationale of Guinea will fall come October 8 at the National stadium, Abuja.

“Watching our players doing well in European leagues I am sure will be sending the jitters down the spines of the Guineans and my prayer is that they do not get any form of injury that will slow them down or stop them from coming for the match. It is going to be tough but my boys are in good form and ready to go',says Siasia in a chat with Complete Sports last night.

The Eagles gaffer is particular about Obi who played all 90 minutes in Inter's 3-2 win over Chidi Odiah's CSKA Moscow and believes if a few more of Nigeria's players get to play in the UEFA Champions League,it will be to the team's advantage.

“If all our players are playing in the Champions League and they have the opportunity to play the entire 90 minutes in every game, then the Super Eagles will soon be one of the best teams in the world',he said adding that Obi would have gotten an extra bit of confidence from his performance on Tuesday night.

“I watched the entire game and I am happy that he (Obi) played the full 90 minutes. Playing in the Champions League, I am sure will help him gain more confidence. He is a very talented player and with the way he played against CSKA Moscow,I am sure he has agreat future in front of him both in Inter and in the national team'',he further said and revealed that he monitors what his players are doing in Europe and call them after every game.

“I monitor my players and I commend them after every game and the way they sound from my talks with them, they are ready for the game against Guinea.
The Guinea coach has been boasting about how they will frustrate us in Abuja but he will find out that the Abuja stadium is a fortress where no team comes out without conceeding at least two goals.

“What I demand of Nigerians during the match is patience. They should not boo the boys when the goals fail to come early.

They should turn out in large numbers to cheer us to victory and they should not also forget to pray for us to win very well'', he stated.

The coach also expressed satisfaction with the condition of the pitch of the Abuja National stadium commending the NFF and Julius Berger for turning the pitch around adding that the place is now lush green for the players to enjoy their game.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Taiwo’s Milan Problem Is Psychological! by Relax101(op): 6:24pm On Sep 29, 2011
It will just be a short time before he gets used to the Seria A.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Taiwo’s Milan Problem Is Psychological! by Relax101(op): 6:23pm On Sep 29, 2011
Super Eagles defender Taye Taiwo’s erratic start to his AC Milan career is due to a psychological problem, according to Furio Fedele, a prominent columnist in Italy.

The ex-Marseille left-back has been severely criticized following his less-than-stellar Serie A debut against Cesena last weekend.

Many have condemned the Nigerian for lacking the required skills to excel at the high-profile Serie A, but Faithful insists it is more psychological than physical.

Taiwo barely escaped a red card on his competitive debut and Faithful believes that the former Flying Eagles star needs to be examined beyond the physical level.

Furio Fedele wrote in Corriere dello Sport: "The player has revealed a clear lack of personality, concentration and clarity. So far it's a big question mark, although identifying the reasons for its decline is really difficult.
The 26-year-old Nigerian spent six seasons in Ligue 1, a championship very "Latin" and similar to the Series A, then made several appearances in the Champions League. So I think his problem is more psychological than anything else.“

I really was not expecting you to prove me right so quickly with your first comeback.

The question was tell or shows us what he stole, how and where.

When you label people a thief, you should have at least some kind of basic knowledge about what they stole, how much and from where.

Only dumb and ignorant people like you spew rubbish for no reason or any kind of knowledge about what you are insanely talking about.

You are unfortunately the sad specie of idiots we have running around like headless zombies with zero sense of porpose.

I know you wont do just, that , you are basically either run away, dance around like a dumb and clueless zombie with a sad case of amnesia, or just compound your ignorance with even more ignorance, but it's still and opportunity for you to redeem yourself.

Btw, what's this got to do with the fact that your corrupt leaders who actually stole from you are never going to pay for the crimes they committed against you and your country?
