PoliticsRe: Jonathan: Fear Of The Unknown Forces Nigerian Leaders To Stay In Office by Rhapsody1(f): 2:39pm On Sep 27, 2012
Biggyd2: Blair can say what he wants. He doesn't know the country more than Nigerians. My issue is what GEJ means by 'fear of the unknown". Is that part of the reason he is thinking of a second term.
I am so interested in the answer to this question. Will throw more light to the person of GEJ smiley smiley smiley
FamilyRe: We Have A Big Violence Problem In Nigeria by Rhapsody1(f): 2:12pm On Sep 27, 2012
While I mostly agree with what a number of people have said so far, it seems one will also be called violent if I need to discipline my child which may involve flogging depending on the misdeed. Now I am not talking about parents that beat up their kids for the flimsiest excuse, maybe transfer of aggression. Kids know the difference between punishment because they understand they have really messed up, and the hitting ‘cos of transferred frustration. They can also tell when their punishment is commensurate to the offence and when it is way more than that. Yes it is a fine line considering what is being discussed here, but should not be confused with it. They should never be hit in anger or they may take it personal, thereby defeating the purpose of the punishment. They should never be allowed to think their parents hate them, rather it is the misdeed. There should have been warnings or rebuke for first offenders and the punishment spelt out if such happens again, which must of course be followed through. Bottomline line is education. In a world as dynamic as ours, any parents should be knowledgeable about these things so you do not cross the line.
I also totally agree that the society encourages violence. For spousal abuse, I tend to blame the “victim” most (I will probably get into trouble here). People do not become violent overnight. Before it even becomes a physical abuse, the verbal, psychological and emotional ones would have gone ahead. People betray themselves in little things. Chances are probably 80% of the times, you can tell someone with violent tendencies, especially if it is someone you are planning to spend the rest of your life with. A lot of times, those warnings are ignored. And after marriage, you are not expected to quit no matter what. It still boils down to education. I remember seeing a thread about teaching our girls to have a healthy self esteem. Every child really. Teach (and do) them the golden rule. Kids know hypocricy when they see it. It will have to start with the family, before the society will feel the impact.

I had to look up some words based on some responses.
VIOLENCE: In its original sense, discipline is systematic instruction given to disciples to train them as students in a craft or trade, or any other activity which they are supposed to perform, or to follow a particular code of conduct or "order". Often, the phrase "to discipline" carries a negative connotation. This is because enforcement of order – that is, ensuring instructions are carried out – is often regulated through punishment.
PUNISHMENT: Punishment is the authoritative imposition of something negative or unpleasant on a person, animal, organization or entity in response to behavior deemed unacceptable by an individual, group or other entity. Negative consequences that are not authorized or that are administered without a breach of rules are not considered to be punishment as defined here

violent: It's with a certain level of disbelief that i read people here demanding to hear "the other side of the story"...which by all accounts will likely begin with statements such as:

"I slapped her because..."

"I punched her because..."

Nairaland is a microcosm of the Nigerian society afterall. The evidence is all too to the eye. People who are sympathetic to wife beaters and would rather listen to a man's excuse for beating up his wife are themselves closet wife beaters. People like that deserve no place in a forward looking society.

Domestic violence should never be tolerated...regardless what the other side of the story for perpetuating such violence may be.
You just said my mind. When I was in early secondary school, I read a book which really helped guide me, can't remember the name now. The summary was that I am the only one responsible for my actions and reactions. No excuses. Say someone slapped me, whether justified or not, that is his problem. There are several ways to respond to that. I could slap back, walk away and plan for revenge, forgive him, etc. But whatever response I choose, it is my decision and problem. I cannot say, " He slapped me which is why I slapped him back. He pushed me to it". The truth is that I slapped back because I chose and wanted to. There is no justification for bad behavior and you cannot claim to be mature and responsible if you do not take responsibilities for your actions and reactions. It has helped me a lot to make the right decisions in my life knowing I cannot bear to look at myself in the mirror otherwise. And when I behave badly, I own up to it too. There is just no excuse for domestic violence no matter the provocation.

FrontPageLawyer: I disagree with you on this. It will amaze you to know there are people that do worst things than the devil, the devil kills one, they kill 10. Are you saying those people are already doomed for hell?
There is only one way to salvation, Jesus Christ. Believe in your heart that God raised Him from dead, confess with your mouth His Lordship over you, you are translated from darkness to light. The thief at the cross with Jesus got saved shortly before he died. It does not matter what he had done before then, today he is with Christ. Believe me, you will be shocked at the people who are making heaven, the seemingly rot of the society. Jesus came to seek and save the lost not people who feel they are good enough. If someone like say Hitler found this truth and confessed Christ before he died, he is cruising in heaven irrespective of what he had done. The only thing is that when you do get to heaven, there is another judgement, the judgement of your works while on earth and appropriate reward. He will lose out on the reward but he would have saved his soul. That was just an example. No disrespect meant.

stepo707: Matt 5:44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you.

It happens that satan happens to be our enemy. So guys what do you think?
There is no where in the bible where we are told to love or hate angels. They are simply ministering spirits, God's messengers and yours too since any child of God has the Power of Attorney to act in Jesus' name. Satan is a fallen angel. Secondly, he is an enemy of the State (God's Kingdom of whom His children are citizens). He committed high treason and was banished from it. As a citizen of any country, you understand the difference between someone who hates just you for whatever reason and someone who hates your country and would not hesitate to BH it, right? Satan is in that category. You cannot pray for him to be saved or love him. He has been sentenced, to death. Christ is interested in how you treat your fellow human being, both citizens and potential citizens of His Kingdom and not His messengers, fallen or otherwise. Satan would have been your servant if not that he committed treason. Satan is not your direct enemy per se to merit or qualify the loving. He is an enemy of your State and he is not human.

Cyberknight: As an Igbo man myself, I must say that having surveyed the (almost) empty field of potential Igbo candidates, I am at a loss as to what to think. Generally, a good way to assess a potential candidate's fitness for office is to look at track records in similar positions. So let us take a state governorship as a rough guide and assess the performance of the Igbo governors in the south-east and see if we can spy the makings of a presidential candidate in any of them. Abia doesn't even make the list, I'm afraid, its now currently the eyesore of the east. Imo is getting that way, I visit there frequently and have firsthand knowledge of the havoc being wrought there. So who can anyone come up with?
My thoughts exactly. I am currently not getting good feelers from Rochas. So far, its Sullivan I can attest to who is doing a fair enough job, at least compared to other eastern states. Where are the credible candidates?
PoliticsRe: Igbo Must Be President In 2015 – Orji Uzor Kalu by Rhapsody1(f): 3:09pm On Sep 21, 2012
no dullin: 1. Rochas Okorocha: This man is a true patriot with a very good vision for Nigeria.even as an ordinary citizen he's good deeds has cut accross ethnic boundaries. I had always dreamt as a child that "one day he'll bcome my president.

2. Peter Obi: An easy goin individual and intellectual. A diplomat and sincere person.

3.As for the third credible individual... (I de come).
I am from Anambra by birth and as at today, I will not give my vote to Peter Obi. He is not credible enough to get my vote. My opinion, of course.

This has always been and will always remain my stand. Vote for credible candidates, not tribe or religion. I have also always said this: though I am Igbo, if Orji Uzo and Babangida were the only two people contesting for presidency, I will give my vote to IBB. If Abia state that he governed for 8 years is in the state it is in, then, Nigeria should not be trusted to him.

PoliticsRe: Can Nigeria Ever Be Super World Power by Rhapsody1(f): 8:02pm On Sep 17, 2012
The USA govt once asked their scientists the country that will be ruling the world in the next 50 years. They did their research thoroughly, and came up with the answer. Nigeria. When they reported their findings to their govt, they found it had to believe. And so, French scientists were asked to conduct the same research. The answer was still the same. Still doubtful of the outcome, Russian and Chinese scientists were then asked to do the same research. They ALL arrived at the same answer. The country that will be ruling the world in the next 50 years is Nigeria. The US government finally asked them how they arrived at that answer. The scientists then said that Nigeria will be the only country left on planet earth by the next 50 years since other countries would have relocated to the habitable planets. Nigeria therefore will be the world super power.

Emmm.....that was a joke!!

No. Has there been improvements at all? Yes, slightly. Am I impressed? Compared with my Enugu days, no. Compared with since this year, well we thank God. I think most peeps have not denied that there has been improvement. They are saying it should extend to 24/7 and be sustained. Some peeps are also understandably concerned about what will happen now.
@Ijeoma, well I will 'kele onye agidi', if it was charity. But will expect the best of the agidi if I am paying for it. I acknowledge there has been improvements in power. That is the best I can do right now since he is being paid anyway. A whole lot still needs to be done. May I be pleasantly suprised. And I am disappointed it is coming 2yrs after GEJ assumed power.

Ijeoma Obasi: We need to stop reasoning from the anus.the power supply we get now is better than what we have been getting from previous administrations.is it that we despise good things?.if this move is a positive one,I say increase speed and fire on GEJ !
Ijeoma, I want to believe you are an adult. As such talk like one and not a child. We do not have to agree but we should be able to express opinions without resorting to cussing.
I grew up with light. New haven, Enugu. Till today, we do not own a generator (I totally hate them). It was when I left Enugu I understood what blackout is. And even though I now own 2 generators, I still detest them. The noise and air pollution, the fuel cost and its hazards. Right now in ph where I stay, I get not more than 9hrs, from 11pm-7am there about (at least my freezer is a beneficiary if nothing else). I agree there has been 'marginal improvement' from previous months but I always remember my growing up days (and I am talking 24/7 with less than 5% outages in a year). I guess you can understand why I want those days back, I have been spoilt. Having stable power is my right as a citizen. The president and his team should get that done. They are being paid hansomely for the job. I do not subscribe to half bread when the full one is still here on earth, not Mars. Whether GEJ taking over is a good move or not, I truthfully do not know. All I know is that I want this 'marginal improvement' to translate to 'achievement' asap. And not just in power sector btw. That too is my right.
PoliticsRe: GEJ Takes Over Power Ministry by Rhapsody1(f): 3:22pm On Aug 29, 2012
ganye1: It is unfortunate that Nigerians expectation of their leaders has fallen so low that they view an achievement in a single sector as satisfactory.
I think a better way to say the above is 'marginal improvement' not achievement in a single sector. It will be termed achievement when we have power 24/7 365 days with <2% outages. What some areas are enjoying now is improvement on what used to be. But I have said before that the psyche of an average Nigerian is so battered that even 10hrs power per day as opposed to maybe 2hrs is considered a privilege, not a right.

kantiyok Gwana :
. As d head of an organization,ur staff steal without ur knowledge, will resign because d fellow did that without ur knowledge?
My dear, if you have worked in a corporate organization, you will understand how certain things work. There are checks and control measures. No one person begins and completes any transaction. Officers have supervisors and those supervisors have too. Each organization have an organogram. These measures also means that whoever is at the helm of affairs is abreast with all that is happening. Allision should have known long before things came to a head if she claims innocence. Else, it is unspeakable incompetence. Do you remember the Mmutallab bombing incident? Americans called for the resignation of the head of NSA (I think), a woman. Why? It happened under her watch. Though I think the call was too harsh but I have no doubt she would have resigned if even a single American life had been lost because of that perceived incompetence. Obama had to intervene. To him whom much is given, much more is expected. There are no excuses.

tatosh: If this is enough for the power minister to resign then what is diezani still doing there? Her person has been followed with so much scandal compared to this
My point exactly. I am not for or against Nnaji, Mmaduekewe or the President. I am just saying that if the Presidency has suddenly decided to conform to best practices, then Allision should also go. The stuff I read about her during the saga was just too sickening. I was expecting a suspension at the very least, to even give the illusion that proper investigation would be done. As it is, any reasonable person will have their misgivings about the reports we have seen so far, whether from Farouk, EFCC, or Aig. And misgivings about anything the presidency says.

oxford: What 'huge corruption allegation' against Allison are you talking about. can u put it here in black and white, lets verify? No fight, just facts.
Guy, where did you go January this year when the fuel subsidy removal saga was at its peak? I am not good with digging up the links but marketers accused Allision of asking for a certain amount of money per the oil they lift. This was to go for the financing of GEJ's campaign. She was accused of giving some guy licence to operate even though his company(ies) did not met up with the minimum requirement. A whole lot more. Now whether that was true or not, it begged looking into. But then apart from that, the simple fact that the subsidy scam happened under her watch was enough to tell her to step down, even temporarily, till certain issues were cleared. That should be (if it is not in the constitution already), form of best practices/ acceptable Code of Conduct. The scam was just tooooo huge for her to feign ignorance. And if she is innocent and did not know, then it means she is grossly incompetent for the position she is occupying. Either way, the Presidency should have done the same thing it wants me to believe it did now with NNaji.
PoliticsRe: Why Barth Nnaji Resigned: Conflict Of Interest by Rhapsody1(f): 8:21am On Aug 29, 2012
A lot of things do not add up in this report. Nnaji claims he had met with the President 2 weeks ago and told him about his interest in the bidding while the President is claiming that it just came to light yesterday or there about. Who is saying the truth? If the Presidency was quick to decide to sack him if he hadn't resigned so as to save the intergrity of the process, why was Allison Mmaduekwe allowed to remain till today in spite of the huge corruption allegations against her (even a temporary suspension would have been enough till the investigations were concluded). Something does not add up. I have always said that people betray themselves in little things. The Presidency betrayed itself when Allison was allowed to stay on, thereby compromising whatever report gotten, which was why Farouk/Otedola saga wasn't a surprise at all to me. That is where I totally lost it for this Government. Going by that, it is hard to believe the Presidency is suddenly being conscientious enough as to abide by Codes Of Conducts. Right now, I can only say that a lot of things do not add up and that there is much more than meets the eye. There are a whole lot of information about this that we will NEVER be privy to so as to make the true conclusion. I have no doubt both parties are guilty of something. Maybe the question is who was found more guilty? Who was more expendable?
