Jobs/VacanciesWatch Out For Office Manipulators by Rubyjade(op): 5:53am On Mar 05, 2024
Watch out for Office Manipulators.

Some employers/employees have mastered you and will manipulate you to look bad before everyone.

They know what triggers you to react in a certain way, and they use this medium to push a negative narrative about you and exempt themselves from the situation, if you are not careful, manipulators will always put you on the spot. By being aware of the signs and taking steps to protect yourself and your sanity, you can navigate these situations with confidence.

Common Tactics of Manipulators:

👉Playing the Victim: they always portray themselves as good to gain sympathy and support.

👉Gossip and Rumors: They spread misinformation about others to create division.

👉Credit Stealing: They take credit for employees' achievements or minimize their contribution.

👉Excessive Flattery: They use flattery to build relationships only to exploit them later.

👉Passive-aggressive behavior: they use subtle tactics like sarcasm or ignoring requests to manipulate you.

👉Blaming and Guilt Tripping
👉Undermining your confidence and abilities.
👉Use your weakness as your triggers.
👉Wanting to find out your discussion with colleagues around the office and find something to use as a topic for discussion.
👉Subtly engage your colleagues or junior staff about you to create an avenue for disrespect.

Tips on Dealing with Office Manipulators:

👉The first thing is to recognize their tactics and know your triggers.

👉Trust your guts, if something feels off, it probably is.

👉Set clear boundaries, be clear about what you will not tolerate.

👉Do not engage in an argument, remember manipulators thrive on emotional reactions so they can have something to hold. Stay calm and focused.

👉Maintain emotional distance. Practice emotional detachment by avoiding getting drawn into their drama.

👉Use assertive communication.

If you find yourself consistently feeling uncomfortable, stressed, or doubtful of yourself around someone at work, it's worth paying attention to these signs and taking action to protect yourself.

Few years ago while I was still job hunting, I rejected a job offer that was willing to pay 5x my current pay because of the Job Description.

I think this happened in 2019 or so.

I was just fresh out of Uni and was working as an intern in a consulting firm close to my house. I think I was being paid a stipend of 25k or so.

And then luckily for me, a friend whom we did ICAN together referred me for an Accounting role in this startup company.

I was elated.

I went for the interview, got asked some basic accounting questions, scaled the interview and was sent an offer.

At first when I got the offer, I didn’t believe the figure I was seeing, they were offering to pay me N125k which was 5x my currently pay, that was really huge for me.

I didn’t even bother to negotiate, I quickly told them I was happy with the salary offer, then they sent me a proper offer letter to sign.

It was while trying to sign the offer letter, that I sat down to really look through the job requirements.

And then I saw that their ideal person for the role was someone with sound knowledge of FINANCIAL STATEMENT preparation, as the company had not been keeping proper records before now, so they needed someone who could make sense of their figures and prepare a Financial statement from it.

It was a key requirement for the role.

I started sweating.

Deep down I knew I didn’t have the practical knowledge of Financial statement preparation, plus they expected that the financial statement for the prior years would be prepared within a month of me joining.

That was too short for me to learn or reach out to anyone to start helping out.

I was in a tight corner.

I eventually reached out to their HR and turned down the offer.

I was sad.!

And for months, I couldn’t forgive myself that I had let such a great offer pass me by because of inadequate skills.

It was even worse when I shared the experience with my mentor, he said and I quote, “how can you say you are an Accountant and you can not prepare a simple Financial statement”

Well, it’s being years since this incident happened, I have since learnt how to prepare a Financial statement and gotten better offers.

But I’m sharing this story today, to encourage us as professionals not to wait till we loose a job offer before equipping ourself with the right skills.

And that’s why I have put together a Masterclass to train interested Accountants on “FINANCIAL STATEMENT PREPARATION & MASTERY”

It’s a 4 days training with practical projects and certification.

You would learn how to prepare a Financial statement from both Trial balance and incomplete records.

Interested? Please send “FS MASTERCLASS” to 08130369767 to get further details. Please note that the training is NOT FREE but very affordable.

I hope this helps

What you should look out for before accepting an offer:

When considering a job offer, there's more to think about than just how much you will be paid. Of course, salary is important, and it could be a deciding factor in accepting a job offer.

Below are factors to consider when accepting a job offer:

📍Career Growth Opportunities: Getting a new job might be your priority at the moment, but you need to think about the long-term career prospects. It is imperative to know what it would take to rise the career ladder in the organization.

📍Work Culture: Evaluate the company's work culture and values and consider if it matches your work style and preferences.

📍Work-Life Integration: Assess the expected workload, working hours, and flexibility of the organization. This is imperative because some organizations have formed the habit of either occasionally working late or working additional days (especially the weekends) without an extra pay.

📍Company Reputation: Research the company's reputation in the industry. Consider factors like financial stability, market standing, and any recent news or controversies.

📍Job Security: Assess the stability of the company and the industry it operates in. Consider long-term prospects and job security.

📍Training & Development: If you have a knack for professional development, then you should find out about the training opportunities the organization has to offer.

📍Salary and Benefits: Now, this is one crucial part you should not overlook. Ensure the compensation aligns with industry standards and meets your financial needs. it is also imperative to access the overall benefits package, including healthcare, retirement plans, and other perks. Most importantly, if the take home is insufficient to take you home, I guess you know what to do 😅

I'll rest my pen here.

However, other than the aforementioned, what do you look out for before accepting a job offer.

I'll love to hear your thoughts in the comment section.

Jobs/VacanciesPayslip Is Not A Determinant For A Candidate's Salary by Rubyjade(op): 9:24pm On Mar 04, 2024
Payslip is not a Determinant for a candidate's Salary.

A lot of organizations still practice the act of asking candidates for their payslips to verify if they truly are earning what they claim to earn or know what to pay as remuneration.

It is advisable that employers should have detailed working salary grades and bands for their employees based on experiences, skills, and other necessary factors which will guide what budget they give to everyone that comes into the organization.

Truth is No quality candidate comes cheap.

A lot Candidates are earning below the industry standards, basing their remuneration on their previous pay would only be short-changing them. If your organizations can afford to pay well please do so and stop asking for payslips.

There are cases where a candidate state his/her salary expectation and then recruiters tell them, they don't earn so much currently why do they want to earn such an increase? Such statement is wrong in all ramifications.

Negotiate with your candidates based on their skills and experience considering the current industry standards for such professions and the expertise they bring to the organization, leave their previous payslips out of the discussion. copied

Chinese employers are the worst, especially factories and construction companies.

They work Monday to Sunday, no off day or leave. Any day you are absent you lose the day's wage.

Coupled with their terrible pay, CCECC workers had to stay a massive protest on Abeokuta and the then governor Amosun addressed them saying 'If you can cope, leave their job.'

They are currently the worst employer in Nigeria, treating our people as slaves.

Jobs/VacanciesTop Things Not Required During Interviews. by Rubyjade(op): 4:35pm On Feb 28, 2024
Top things not required during Interviews.

Some candidates are usually confused when I get to the end of the interview sessions and I let them know if they have any questions for me.

From those shocked, puzzled, bland, excited or are you kidding-me-kind-of look, I just laugh. Interviews shouldn’t be too fraught with negative energy. We all have been there.

So I want to drop those things we don’t really need for interviews but which some of us out of ignorance still ask about:

1. Ethnicity or race
2. Faith/ Religion
3. Home Address is not same as location
4. Bank Statements
5. Marital Status or reason why someone is unmarried.
6. Why you have a gap on your resume.
7. How måny children do you have
8. Personal details of previous employers.
9. Payslips

Quite unnecessary! What other things have I forgotten, feel free to add.

Basically, the primary comsideration should be:

👉🏽What are you bringing on board?
👉🏽Do you have a track record if experienced?
👉🏽Do you meet the criteria for the role?
👉🏽Are you passionate about your job?
👉🏽Do you have the right attitude to fit in?

I find networking the easiest way to get a job. Recently, I learnt two things:

📌 If recruiters find you exceptional, they will create space for you on a team. Nobody ignores value.

📌Chip it into conversations: If you’re transitioning, tell people about it. If you’re seeking job opportunities, let them know.

Above all, mindset is really important. If you think there are no jobs, then there isn’t.
