Lets face it, when it comes to Nigeria, what most people think of is the corruption, kidnappings, poverty and Nollywood, apart from Nollywood, none of the above are good news. What a lot of people don’t know about though, are the superstitions, myths and legends that have to do with the country. 10. The beautiful plaits The story of this folklore is commonly told in Nigerian boarding schools, now take note that in most Nigerian schools, girls must have their hair in plaits/cornrows. Anyway the story goes like this; In this very school, some time ago, there was a girl who’s hair was the finest, it was always beautifully made and very neat, but when asked who made her hair, the girl would reply and say it was a very shy and quiet friend of hers, well people got tired of asking and dropped the subject. Until one night, one of her roommates woke up and let out a scream, there was the girl headless, plaiting her own head. 9. The devils’ music The dancing shoes Have you ever found yourself just randomly dancing to nothing, but just dancing, happy with what your doing, well be careful and try to remember where you kept your shoes. One of the lesser known myths, the devils’ music goes like this. If you scatter your shoes in the night before going to bed, when you wake up, your shoes will be beside your bed, if you put on those shoes you just might find yourself dancing to hell. There’s honestly no way to know if your shoes have satanic dancing powers, all you have working for you is to try and remember where you kept them the night before. 8. Bush Babies https://www.wonderslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Jinn-in-Nigerian-myths.jpg Jinn in Nigerian myths No matter how strong or brave you are, noises in the night can make anyone jump, especially if its the sound of a crying baby but before you run to help that baby, make sure it isn’t a bush baby. The bush baby is a myth used to scare boarding school students into minding their business and staying indoors in the night. The story goes like this, on a calm night, with the wind at a minimum, when your almost at that point of sweet sleep, you will hear crying from outside. It will sound like a baby or a toddler crying, sometimes the kid will be calling for help, now you being the good Samaritan goes outside to help the little one, just as you reach the kid, he looks up at you with red eyes and a mouth full of razor sharp teeth, you will never be seen again. Some say, they kill and eat you right there, while others say they drag you down to hell. The moral of this story? Stay in bed and mind your own business. 7. Jinn Bizarre Nigerian Myths JINN The jinn is said to have an Islamic background, mostly popular in boarding schools that have a majority of Muslims, that fact does not make them any less scary. No one is sure what they look like, but it is agreed that they are very small and sometimes invincible, but one thing that is believed is that they are mean killing machines, especially if you step on their house or children or pour water on them, and no you can’t apologise, because you wouldn’t even know that you did anything. It is believed that anthills are their homes, and so the warning goes that you should never destroy an anthill. 6. Pregnant women Pregnant women Nigeria Most cultures and tribes have their own rules and beliefs when it comes to pregnant women. Nigerians are no different. In some cultures, like the Ijaw and Yorubas, a pregnant woman is not allowed to see a masquerade because they believe that the baby will look like a masquerade when it is born. Also in some places, when a pregnant woman is sitting with her legs out, you must not cross her legs, the reason? The baby might look like you or bad luck will follow the child. 5. Whistling at night https://www.wonderslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Whistling-at-night-in-Nigerian-myths.jpg Moon Night Sky Some people enjoy whistling, making music without singing and just your lips, perfect for those who cant sing. In some parts of Nigeria though, you must not whistle at night, Because you will wake the dead, who will whistle back at you and just may escort you back to their graves, its not a matter of question, they WILL take you. Another belief is that you will be calling snakes to you, no you won’t be able to control them. 4. Inedible fish https://www.wonderslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Inedible-fish-in-Nigerian-myths.jpg Inedible fish in Nigerian myths There is a river in Kogi state which is said to be cursed, and if you catch a fish from there, no matter how much you try to cook it, it will always remain raw. Plus if you ever get injured by the bone of any fish in that river, the injury will never heal. 3. Lady koi koi (the woman in red) https://www.wonderslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Madam-koi-koi.jpg Lady koi koi Lady koi koi is the most popular story told to all boarding school students. One of the versions of madam koi koi goes like this. A long time ago, there was a teacher who loved the colour red, from head to toe this is all she ever wears, she was also a wicked woman who had a son. Now, one day the children who she taught had enough of her, carrying her son, they beat him to the point of death, in the rush and struggle to save her son, she lost one leg of her shoes, angry with what had happened, she vowed to take revenge on those who killed her son. To this day she walks the earth, looking for her son and lost shoe. She can enter rooms in the night, and if you ever hear her telltale sound, koi koi koi, you immediately close your eyes and don’t open them until the sound of her heel cannot be heard again. Unless? Well, death is all that awaits you. 2. Mammy water https://www.wonderslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Mammy-water.jpg Mammy water This is a river goddess who is described as a beautiful and graceful being, a woman who is half human and half fish, a mermaid in short. Unlike the little mermaid though, this goddess is not a doe eyed princess looking for her true love, instead she’s out for an easy slave to carry back to her watery kingdom to serve her and her sisters for as long as they wish. Another belief is that, if you find one brushing her hair by the beach at night, she will swim away and leave her comb behind, if you pick up this comb, she will appear to you in your dreams asking for it back, in exchange for money, any amount you want. No sex, where would you even put anything? With all these, she is actually revered by son cultures 1. Witches, Wizards and Witchcraft https://www.wonderslist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Witches-Wizards-and-Witchcraft.jpg Nigerian Myths Unlike Harry Potter, those suspected of witchcraft will most likely be killed or may be asked to kill others, for a little payment of course. A lot of Nigerians believe that witches hold meeting every night, planning how to ruin the lives of others and when they’re done with their nightly meetings they fly around for sometime, carrying out some evil acts, like murder and stealing of properties. Of course, it is said that if any of your pictures, or properties are missing, a witch has carried it away to make sacrifices with. One of the most popular ways people believe you can become a citizen of the night, is to eat in your dreams, no matter what, as long as your eating, especially eggs, meat and sweets, you are being initiated. Most people believe that only prayers can ward them off, and others? Well they believe that creating their own coven is the only way to help protect yourself. |

A young selfie addicted lady who spent up to 23 hours a day online, is currently seeking help after developing a painful disease caused by hunching over her laptop. 21-year-old lady identified as Michelle Gore, from Bracknell, Berkshire, United Kingdom, who became so obsessed with technology that she took 200 selfies a day and used her phone in the shower, has warned others of the dangers after developing a rare medical condition. It was learnt that she spends up to 23 hours online every day and was thrilled to receive some latest gadgets at Christmas of 2014. However after spending hours hunching over a selection of devices including a tablet, phone and laptop, she was diagnosed with Tietze disease in January last year. Michelle, who graduated from the University of Bath in July 2015, said; "I would end up spending the entire holidays glued to a screen of some sort – whether it was watching a YouTube tutorial to work out how to use my new phone, or trawling an internet forum for tips." "I was never without my phone or some other device because I couldn’t bear to miss out on updates from apps like Snapchat, Instagram or WhatsApp. I’d be taking selfies all day as many as 200 just to get the perfect shot that I could post online. And before I went to bed I’d play games on my PlayStation or Xbox or watch Netflix, but just so I didn’t miss out, I’d leave my phone on all night in case a message came through. I even specially requested a waterproof phone for Christmas last year, just so I could stay online in the shower." Her Doctor said her addiction had put a strain on her rib cartilage, causing the inflammatory disorder which is characterised by chest pain and swelling between the upper ribs. "Sometimes I was getting just one hour of sleep a night and that meant I struggled to focus during the day. I’d take my phone to lectures with me and found it hard to concentrate. As a result, my grades suffered and while I got a degree, I didn’t get the result I wanted. I don’t know how long I can keep this up. I got the shakes I am sweating and unstable... and I am bored out my mind. I look in the mirror and I am a mess...My hair is a tangled mess... the colour from my face is gone... my once so lively eyes never looked so lifeless.... it’s like staring at a zombie version of myself." Now she is warning others about the dangers of getting too hooked on technology and has made a hard-hitting video highlighting the perils with the charity Fixers. Recovered Michelle who is also a graphic designer, said; " I realised I had a problem when I woke up on Boxing Day 2014 tangled up in cables from different gadgets. I had the laptop wire round my leg, my headphones around my neck, my mobile under my pillow, my tablet charging on my bedside table and my Xbox and PlayStation controls at the foot of the bed. I thought, "this isn’t normal". And when Michelle began experiencing shooting pains in her back and chest, she knew something was seriously wrong. She said: "I was in pain every day and I was worried there was something up with my heart so I went to see my GP in January last year." I was at breaking point so I confessed how long I’d been spending on my gadgets. She said I’d strained my costal cartilage from being in the same position for so long staring at my phone or hunching over my laptop. It came as a real shock but luckily it was the wake-up call I needed to sort myself out." Dr Richard Graham, Consultant Adolescent Psychiatrist and Technology Addiction Lead at the Nightingale Clinic, UK, said the addiction is complex to treat. "Unlike with alcohol or drugs, a patient cannot simply decide never to use a technology again. Instead, they must learn to establish a healthy relationship with technology and that is the crux of the treatment; sleep and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are peripheral treatments that treat conditions that can sometimes coexist with technology addiction. He added: "We need technology in our lives and it brings a host of benefits. It can however, drain us of our time as we spend more and more time online. This can become a compulsion to constantly be plugged in so that we don’t ever risk feeling that we are missing out, or stepping off a ladder. The by-product of this is that we are seeing an increasing number of young people addicted to technology."

By Olayinka Latona Barely one week to the rescheduled governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, wife of the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, and his (Jonathan) political associates have moved to stop the re-election of Governor Seriake Dickson by mobilizing support for Chief Timipre Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the January 9 poll. INEC had, on December 5 last year, conducted election in seven out of eight local government areas of the state, out of which the governor and candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) overwhelmingly won in six while Sylva took one. Both the PDP and APC have shifted the battle to Southern Ijaw. Though Dickson is leading with over 33,000 votes, the APC is bent on upturning the governor’s victory. Sources close to the former first family confirmed that Mrs. Jonathan had brokered a peace meeting between Sylva and a former militant leader, Ateke Tom. The meeting was said to have been held behind closed doors on new year’s day in the Port Harcourt palatial home of Tom where Jonathan allegedly persuaded the militant leader to “come to Southern Ijaw and help Sylva.” Aside the former first lady, key political associates of Jonathan, it was learnt, have renewed their resolve to gang-up against Dickson on January 9. It will be recalled that while some of Jonathan’s men had defected to the APC to fight Dickson, many of them remained in the PDP to work for the election of the APC candidate, Sylva. Prominent amongst those who defected are Senator Clever Ikisikpo (Bayelsa East), immediate past senator representing the former president; Chief Ikiogha Diekivie, a former Chief of Staff Government House and close ally of the president from Yenagoa; a former Commissioner for Lands and confidant of Jonathan, Surveyor Furoebi Akene; a former Commissioner under Jonathan and current FERMA Director, Finance, Bishop Deggi Eremienyo. The FERMA top official defected to APC just eight days to the December 5 election and worked against Dickson in Nembe. Others are a former Chairman of the NDDC and bossom friend of Jonathan, Dr. Tarilla Tabepah, who hails from Kolokuma/Okpokuma; Hon Ayobegha James, Chief Numoipre Wills, a Nembe high chief, who was appointed Executive Secretary, National Boundaries Commission by Jonathan. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/bayelsa-poll-jonathans-men-dump-dickson/ |

The talk is on why on earth he would want to have his motorcycle configured this way. Also i wonder why anyone would agree to be driven by the okada man.
