That is same fate that awaits Nigeria. Nigeria GDP recently reduced from 500 to 350B. That is fate that afflict countries that depend on 1 or 2 resources and don't have a diversified economy. If Oil prices tanks - you can bet lot of economies will be wrecked.

This map shows which countries are most dependent on natural resources

Kur17:
Imagine in the year 2008 Venezuela had a GDP of $289.7 the same year Kenya had $35.9, in 2023 Kenya will have almost $140 and Venezuela will have $68...Sudan is also on the same economic failures, it was larger than Kenya's but today Kenya have three times larger economy than it

In 2014 Angola had a GDP of $145.7, Kenya had a $61.5, the gap is so small currently

Kenya is the seventh largest economy Africa, in three year time it'll be sixth...

If we continue at this pace - we will hit 150B (kshs 15 trillion) in 2023. Then hit 400-500B by 2030. By then we will definitely be competing with South Africa. Nigeria we will not exists then or will be mired in a civil war - Oil-dependent countries are facing a bleak future. We just need to manage our ethnic based politics...

Sudan devalued their currency and it just keep weakening against the USD. To understand that...imagine kenya in 1993..when exchange rate from 1:20USD certainly went as low as I think 60! Sudanese pound moved from 18 to usd to now anything 60 (black market - official rate 47).

That crashes the nominal GDP. How does this happen - foreign currency shortage! Kenya continues to defy that - despite exports being stuck at 5-6B.
mtisTheQubit:
that is soo true...the chart you just posted really does make alot of sense on what happening...For most of guys dependent on oil things are a bit tricky for them...bythe way what happened to sudan economy.at one time they had bigger GDP than us..
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 3:23pm On Jan 24, 2019
Kenya is growing at more than 6% - or double digit - because you need to factor the strength of currency against USD. That is adding another 4-5% to growth. You see for economy to grow from 88B to 98B in a year - 10B dollars more - then growth rate is more than 10% - around 11%.All that is coming because for many years Kshs has been Africa strongest currency - it doesn't depreciate like the rest - and when it does it not a catastrophy.
Jonraid:
If we keep growing at 6%,by 2022 we will have CLOSED ON both Angola and Morocco in terms of GDP.We are 'reeling them in'

South Africa is classified by the IMF as resource -intensive. South Africa has been built on the back of it's minning industry. Jozi would be nothing without the gold & plantinum mines.

So true..with exception of SA the rest are just boasted by mineral stuff..am not saying that they are not doing well but we just cant rule out the effect of fossils on their economy..

Fin Minster power in current constitutional dispensation is really limited. He doesn't make the budget. Parliament makes it. He doesn't control the budget - the budget controller does that. All Rotich does is the donkey work of financing the budget.
Jonraid:
IMF are at loggerheads with us.With Rotich being an ex-Imf,I don't trust him much holding the docket of the finance minister!

They never really overtook kenya - they were estimated to overtake kenya last year - then they devalued the birr. They are still fastest growing at 8% - but kenya is edging towards 7% - and Kenya strength is ever strong kshs.
Jonraid:
Ethiopia overtaking Kenya as the largest economy by GDP in East Africa was only a short lived minute euphoria like chicken sex!

You cannot ran away from per capita smiley. I know you're use to competing with Ghana....but obviously by the time you're even competing with Ghana..you've lost. You should be competing with similar sized countries.
Daejoyoung:
ln that case why does Frances or England beat the likes of China, India, and the U.S? the simple reason is that no matter the size of a country, it is stupid to measure talents per capita. Kenyans have some of the best runners, not because of population but because the Kenyan nation is simply good at that.
Lol, how do you measure talents per capita grin

Those flankers are mostly for influence.Probably to make a statement to our west African and African neighbors. When the time comes for combat we will reinstate them if they are bad.And don't you think the Nigerian govt thought about it before buying them? You think they just sat up one day and brought out 1.2bn $ to buy planes? We aren't as poor as Kenya or Uganda. We have the money to buy,fly and maintain them. It's embarrassing for an African power like Nigeria to still dwell on third gen fighters like our f7s(which are still flying) so we are upgrading to fourth gen (flanker,jf17 later frogfoot). After all S.A. bought 3 next to useless gripen jets.So why don't you attack them? It's all about the influence.

What big deal the economy is growing, banks are innovating and growing.Imf took their cover & we didn't die.The pressure on interest rate cap should be kept a little longer so they can see innovate more.Gov is borrowing cheaply. All the digital creditors are filling the void for high interest lending.Kuria is just a hired gun by bankster and his motion won't see the light of day.

Well give and take another less than 10-15B that their states and local authorities collect or keep as internal revenues - and it still very puny. This is a giant puny.
Jonraid:
Nigeria can best do a revenue target of 13-14 B USD,how can they then estimate to collect 19.4B USD. Their estimates are so stretched and not realistic!

Our estimates were 18B and KRA are almost matching that.We utmost fall short of less than a billion dollars when coming up with our revenue estimates. We will certainly collect 17.5 B!

*ESTIMATES*

Total budget 28B USD

Recurrent expenditure

The 2019 Nigeria's budget proposal.

Here is a look at Nigeria's recurrent expenditure in a country projected to hit 200m as of 2019!

A substantial part of the recurrent cost proposal for 2019 is for the payment of salaries and overheads in Ministries providing critical public services such as

a. N569.07 billion for the Ministry of Interior;(1.5B USD)....They are kidding much! grin

b. N435.62 billion for the Ministry of Defence;(1.2B USD)....Their superior military! wink

c. N462.24 billion for the Ministry of Education; (1.28B USD)....No words shocked

d. N315.62 billion for the Ministry of Health. (875M USD)

What a joke! grin

Key macroeconomic figures

Revenue – Where government is making money

Nigeria is estimating a total revenue at N6.97 trillion(19.4B USD when the estimate is rounded off to 7 trillion Naira) - (which is 3% lower than the 2018 estimate of N7.17 trillion), consisting of oil revenue projected at N3.73 trillion(10.3B USD) while non-oil revenue is estimated at N1.39 trillion(3.8B USD).Non oil revenues 3.8B smiley

Projected revenue from taxes

Companies Income Tax (CIT) - N799.52 billion (2.2B USD) This comes from their companis which are 4-6 times bigger than Kenya's

Value Added Tax (VAT) - N229.34 billion (636m USD)

Customs Duties - N302.55 billion. (838M USD)

Independent Revenues to N624.58 billion. (1.7B usd)

Other revenues expected in 2019 include various recoveries of N203.38 billion(563M USD), N710 billion(11.9B USD) as proceeds from the restructuring of government’s equity in Joint Ventures and other sundry incomes of N104.11 billion(288m USD)

By implication, this shows Africa's largest economy with crude oil as its cash cow will still do below average on its diversification policies as oil

takes center stage in government revenue.

All this are estimates which are greatly hinged on oil income, gdp growth of more than three percent(they will certainly do a best of 2% as of 2019 grin),an exchange rate of 305 to the dollar and an inflation of 9.98%

Here is the breakdown of all that!

The 2019 budget is placed on the following assumptions (I love the word assumptions! grin)

a. Oil price benchmark of $60 per barrel; (Will this be the case? )

b. Oil production estimate of 2.3 million barrels per day, including condensates;

c. An exchange rate of N305/$;

d. Real GDP growth of 3.01%; and

e. Inflation Rate of 9.98%.

I'm not so impressed! With a 350 billion GDP Nigeria's budget should be kicking as** grin
The more you examine the giant the more you realize how cheated they are.

Nope that list you showed said "group"
That's including jambojet and other subsidiaries not the "airline" alone.

BTW how many subsidiaries does KQ have?
Now that is so lame.We are talking KQ not it's subsidiaries.Whatever will come from subsidiaries is either the profit or loss..earned income.KQ jambojet easily carries a million a year then you have Flamingo of TZ and maybe that about it.
