1.Most people go to university to graduate with degrees that would qualify them for office jobs....where they would shuffle papers without thinking for the rest of their working lives.Meanwhile...most companies want people who are ideas persons, problem solvers,etc. Not clerks.Of course...when some gent or lady turns up looking for job....and cannot show that he or she is an ideas man or woman.....

2.Our universities do not teach you how to be a problem solver. For instance...back in the 1980's...a car factory in the USA that was about to be closed because of high running costs....reached out to the local unviersity's department of economics to help them solve their cost problems. Students and lecturers joined hands to develop a plan to sort out the problem. Now...which Nigerian economics department can come and do the same for a Nigerian factory.(None of them).

3.Still on thinking. Our lecturers used to tell us that in order to pass their exams...you have to give them what they taught you in class.That is nice...but the problem is...when a student is doing the exams....he is not using his thinking mind to answer the question....just regurgitating the lecturer'snotes.Sigh....thinking gone.

4.Assignments. Most students when asked to do an assignment....just go and copy from textbooks and websites. No synthesizing of ideas from sources.

In brief....the problem is....our educations system does not teach students to think....they teach students to just regurgitate what the lecturer told them.May help in getting a first class from uni....but in the real world...where you have to formulate solutions....

Unruly kids due to elimination of corporal punishment at home and in school, repeatedly informing kids of their rights more than of their responsibilities, poor policies, reality TV being the main source of entertainment for kids and too much use of calculators would have contributed to this.

Let me clarify the question for you:
A tetrahedral pyramid, as the name implies, is a tetra (four) faced pyramid.

If we must assume anything, it should necessarily be that the cannon balls are of the same material, shape and volume, thus, such a tetrahedral pyramid of cannon balls, if 7 lines were to be drawn from their edges to intersect at their vertices, can only form four faces (including the base) of the same equilateral triangle.

Now, we are told that two tetrahedral pyramids, each having a total of 10 balls were combined to form one larger pyramid in which all 20 balls were used, and you suggest the larger pyramid cannot have up to 20 balls. But S{1,N} N² = Sum of squares identity = N(N+1)(2N+1)/6, and S{1,N} N = (N² + N)/2 again

This formula gives you the expected number of cannon balls in the pyramid for any given value of N.

My challenge is this though: Can you come up with a formal proof/algorithm with which we can easily derive any such set of numbers if we wanted to?

I assumed wrongly but logically that there must be 10 balls at the base of the bigger/combined pyramid.

It must be 9 cannonbal base because both the smaller pyramids are 9 each, hence bigger one has to have 18 cannonballs as my Excel calculations states, not 19.

Using my Excel calculations, it appears the increasing size (starting from the lowest) of tetrahedral pyramids are: 4, 9, 18, 31, 48 etc.

So to find the minimum number of cannonballs to form a tetrahedral pyramid using 2 smaller pyramids of different sizes, we need to add all these smaller increasing size of tetrahedral pyramids (e.g. [4+9], [9+18], [4+48] etc) until we find an addition that meets a far larger size of tetrahedral pyramids.

I am yet to see a fit, so I propose that it is impossible.
