If you want to know why and how Victor Banjo was convicted and executed, go and search for the book "No Place to Hide: Crises and Conflicts Inside Biafra" by Ben Odogwu and read chapter two. It contains how Banjo, Ifeajuna, Agbamuche and Alale were investigated, recorded and the transcripts of their trial it's self.

Banjo was executed along with 3 well known Igbo officers, Ifeajuna, Agbamuche and Alale who all conspired to arrest Ojukwu and negotiate with Gowon

I decided to google the battle you mentioned and surprise surprise the only info I could find on it was on one of your official ipob websites. The excerpt of the battle was taken from an eyewitness account from someone (obviously a Biafran) who was very proud of his role in this battle and I initially thought it was Ojukwu, until I saw the Head of State was mentioned in the 3rd person. Surprise surprise again, the excerpts are from your GOC Madiebo and here is what he recounts about Ojukuwu's direct involvement.

Achuzia, who was also delegated to assist with the operation later came to see me at 1300 hours looking extremely worn out and dejected. He revealed that the counterattack I planned on Oguta for 1600 hours had already taken place and failed woefully. If you bother reading the rest, you will see that Ojukwu, like a true desk soldier, immediately gave up after that setback he personally "led" undermining another one of his commanding officers (like he did to Banjo in the past), telling Madiebo that they needed another set of troops commanded by someone different to expel the enemy.

But like what normally happens in war, true warriors ignore their superiors and at the 2nd attempt, properly commanded by Madiebo, he ensured that Achuzia went back and cleared the enemy. Very colourful language is used to describe the victory and Ojukwu is shocked that the same people he had written off achieved this.

Maybe if he spent less time playing to the gallery and authoring his Shakespearean tragedy he would have seen that the resolve of his men was always their greatest attribute.

As for your claims on Nwankwo, they are true, he was born in modern day Delta state. However not once did I say he wasn't a Midwesterner (though I must admit I did not know that he was) but I acknowledged his clear Igbo roots, which he amplified.

Also you cannot deny that immediately he took over, things started to fall apart pretty quickly. Unpopular policies were promulgated that seemed pro Biafran like passes, curfews and more importantly the cornering of provisions and supplies directly to Biafra. Rapes and molestations by Biafran officers, especially targeted at northern minorities became the norm. In fact the "liberators" were so suspicious of the "liberated", that only Igbos were allowed to cook food for the Biafran soldiers after a few poisoning scares.

Now all of this could be dismissed as Nigerian propaganda, but what cannot be dismissed was that Biafran soldiers were ambushed by indigenous Ijaws/Urohobos and quite a few were killed, way before Nigeria had put in place it's counter attack. So clearly, the Midwesterners were not happy about something with their "liberators" and this is strange as this same region was peaceful under Ejoor.

Well we all know what happend later, when Nigerian troops were welcomed with open hands and Igbo minorities in the mid west felt the full force of the consequences of the original Biafran "liberation".

Now lastly, as for the Biafran coup I could not find anything from your Odogwu and to be honest I have seen you have already argued this with people on here who have dismissed his version.

What I do not get is if their was actually a recording of their plotting, how was it possible that their first trial was deemed inconclusive and the Military judge (a Biafran) refused to convict. I have very personal experiences with the military and I fail to see how any officer would discountenance a recording and refuse to take the easy route and instead stick his head out for "marked men". No one has ever done that in the Nigerian or Biafran military, no one.

Anyway, why googling this I came across this interesting interview from Gowon where he points out that the first coup in Nigeria was actually meant to be carried out by Banjo and Ojukwu. So it is clear that Ojukwu knew Banjo pretty well (and vice versa). He clearly recognised that he could never trust people that were carved from the same stone as him when it came to loyalty and ambition and that's why almost all the original coup plotters were reimpriosned or died under his hand in Biafra.

The irony of life is that Northerners would probably have been far happier if initially Ojukwu had become head of state instead of Ironsi!!

Banjo invaded the Midwest region himself with 3000 Biafrans on 9th August 1967 dealing with a federal force that numbered no more than 300 men . The Northerners, sorry I mean the "Nigerian" authorities, had recalled almost all their troops back home or to Lagos months ago, conveniently. Read into that what you will.

Within 24 hours, the Biafran "liberating" force controlled most of the region.

Straight away Banjo, the invading General (na Ojukwu give am title) found out that Ojukwu had undermined him and without his knowledge sent another bunch of troops commanded by Ochei to go and kill Ejoor in Benin, which had not been part of what Banjo and Ojukwu discussed as Ejoor, was still one of the 3 midwestern candidates Banjo had suggested that Ojukwu should appoint as administrator of the Midwest....since as they all insisted, they were not actually invading any other parts of Nigeria but "liberating" and"saving" us from Northern control and domination.

Ojukwu refused to accept this, and appointed an Igbo officer, Okonkwo, a medical doctor as the new Governor and leader of the Midwesterners. Read into that what you will.

After 3 days of argument, Banjo was forced to follow the Ojukwu's instruction and start his onward march to the Western Region on the 12th of August. His troops were only able to enter the region on the 17th of August.

The 17 of August also happens to be the same day Wole Soyinka was arrested and imprisoned for 22 months by the Nigerian government. He was arrested in the West, but obviously taken to a prison in Kaduna. Read into that what you will.

By the 18th of August Banjo and his troops were stopped at Ore and his troops would occupy that part of the Western region for a further month. Ojukwu would summon him back to hq on the 19th and clandestinely execute him on the 22nd September, this was 2 or 3 days after Nigeria had started their counteroffensive (from about 3 fronts simultaneously) and successfully taken back the Midwest with the help and participation of the indigenous non-Igbos of the region.

These are facts that can be verified, but we know it is better to stick with your propaganda that states you have been wronged from the beginning of history and it is all Yoruba peoples fault as you have no blame in the matter at all.

The truth is almost no properly trained Nigerian officer of that era believed in secession. Most of them were trained overseas, with other tribes and due to the military, had lived in other areas of Nigeria and were properly exposed. They were more "Nigerian" than any set of people to walk this earth.

They all became secessionist later because of power grabs and selfishness, and just like the Northerner officers proved when their coup was successful and they could have seceeded like they claimed they wanted to, the allure of lording it over the rest of Nigeria is to difficult to resist.

Nigeria has always been a state by "capture" and we all know who has popularised that saying.

In my life I have never heard a single Northerner, no matter how feeble and weak intellectually he may be, refer to the 2nd coup as not being a Northern Coup. One thing I don't get about this Biafran coup is who was meant to take over from Ojukwu?

Surely after the recent events of the first coup (in Nigeria) no normal human being would plan a coup without being sure who they wanted to take over and install. No soldier (particularly Ifeajuna) would be stupid enough to make the same mistake twice. So definitely if they had someone that was to replace Ojukwu I would imagine it would be someone senior who they respect.....which leaves only Banjo.

So now I ask, does it make sense that Banjo, would plan a coup to put himself in power in Biafra? Could his brain have been so fried that he would think Igbo and other Easterners would listen to him and instruct their kith and kin to follow him to war/surrender?!

Again, , however, when the 1954 constitution conference started, my good friend, Chief Obafemi Awolowo tabled a motion to the effect that in the new constitution, provision should be made that any state which feels like seceding should do so. I was opposed to it and said ‘no’ and said that once we have a federation, we are indivisible and perpetual. That was when we began to use that expression - ‘The Indivisibility and perpetuity of the federation’ - and that to secede would amount to treason. And so, a debate ensued.


The Secretary of State then was Oliver Littleton, later Lord Chandos and he was very much interested and that was his first time in saying that the people of African descent were people actually debating at a high level. So a full day was given to Chief Awolowo to make his points. He spoke brilliantly as a lawyer. He made his points why secession should be incorporated in the constitution. He cited the case of the Soviet Union which is a federation, and that secession is written there so that any state in the Soviet Union can secede at will.


He also cited the case of Western Australia and eventually he finished his case and was applauded. We adjourned. The next day, I had to reply. I availed myself of the opportunity to, well, demolish the arguments of my friend and I cited the case of United States which based its constitution on that of the Swiss Confederation. That is Switzerland. I pointed out a case, I think, that of Texas versus White, where Mr. Salmon Chase, the Chief Justice laid down the principle - he was really an arbiter - that the union was intended to be perpetual and indivisible and that any attempt to divide the union by secession was treasonable.

The North (NPC) supported Action Group. The question was then: Should we have secession? The Colonial Office came to our rescue. You know, the usual principle of Britain - ‘divide and rule’ (laughs) but this time, it was in our favour. So, the colonial office backed us. Lord Chandos said that on the face of the arguments before him it would be suicidal to incorporate secession in our constitution and that is why we have section 86 in our constitution that if any region or state should secede, then it will be an act of treason and that was what led to this war, because Col. Ojukwu seceded and so violated the constitution.
Now, if in 1954 I, as a politician fought against secession and won against Chief Awolowo and others who were in favour of secession, don’t you see that the Head of State won’t be fair to me in saying that the politicians of pre-1966 were responsible for the downfall of the republic?

In 1953, Saradunna and majority of the north wanted to leave Nigeria. Awolowo was fine with this as he felt a shared destiny with the North would hold Southern Nigeria back and gave silent approval. The great Zik of Africa was the one that insisted they should not leave and Nigeria must remain a federation. He then went on to sway Awo and make promises to the North... and the rest is history.

The problem is you are not speaking the truth, but just sounding like a pained person looking for someone to blame for all his problems.

Though I agree with you that practically all our founding politicians laid the foundation for Nigeria's malaise they were clearly not disasters like the later generations would and continue to prove to be.

Yoruba Obas/leaders are removed if they fail to respect themselves and are failures. We've always had this as part of our history and culture, hundreds of years before Awo ever came on the scene.

One thing we understand from Yoruba culture is that no one, which includes our leaders, knows everything or is infallible . Thus we expect leaders to make mistakes and have shortcomings, popular ones will be forgiven and the incapable ones will be abandoned and forgotten. That's why all our Heroes and even Myths are realistic and have stories of highs and lows- we don't worship/adore/idolize humans who don't realize they are human.

BETWEEN BODE THOMAS AND OBA ADENIRAN ADEYEMI: WHEN A MAN BARKS TO DEATH

Oba Adeniran Adeyemi II, was Alaafin of Oyo, between 1945 and 1954, until he was forced into exile by the Action Group led government of the Western region, as a result of the death of the Deputy leader of the Action Group, Chief Bode Thomas and also for having sympathy, for the rival NCNC of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

Chief Bode Thomas (1918-1953) became the deputy leader of the Action Group, he later formed Nigeria’s first indigenous law firm called- Thomas, Willams, Kayode and co. i.e. the trio of Bode Thomas, Chief Rotimi Williams and Chief Remilekun Fani Kayode.

Bode was a brilliant lawyer, but also very haughty and arrogant. He was made the Divisional Council Chairman in 1953, while the Alaafin of Oyo was a mere member. On his first appearance in council, after being appointed chairman, all the council members stood up for him in deference, to welcome him except Oba Adeyemi II, who for cultural reasons, could not show deference to anyone in public. Bode Thomas rudely shouted at the king, for having the temerity and audacity to disrespect him. “Why are you sitting when I walked in, you don’t know how to show respect?”At that time, Bode Thomas was 35 years old and Oba Adeniran was in his 60’s. The Alaafin felt very insulted and nonplussed; he said “se emi lon gbomo baun?” (Is it me you are barking at like that?). Oba Adeniran just told him “Ma gbo lo baun” (continue barking).Oba Adeniran Adeyemi II, was father of the incumbent Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III.

The confrontation happened on November 22nd 1953. Bode Thomas got home and started barking! He barked and barked like a dog all night until he died in the early morning of November 23rd 1953.

He cut short his promising career. Oba Adeniran Adeyemi II, was thereafter deposed and sent on exile in 1954 for sympathizing with opposition NCNC, because he had come in conflict with Bode Thomas who was Deputy Leader of the Action Group, before his untimely death. In fact at a session in the parliament, Sardauna Ahmadu Bello had described Thomas as “Arrogant and ungracious”. Oba Adeniran Adeyemi II, was sent on exile to Ilesha and later relocated to Egerton Street on Lagos Island where he lived and died in 1960. His death truncated the ambition of Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, to proceed to the United Kingdom to study law. He later became an Insurance Executive with the Royal Exchange Assurance, where he worked until he ascended the throne of his forefathers, as the Alaafin of Oyo in 1971.

What I see here is nothing but inferiority complex.

First of language is dynamic and as such changes over time, you can't expect us to not be innovative with our official language regardless of wherever it came. Brazilians have their own Portuguese vocabulary as those Mexico, chile, Argentina which differs to some extent from colonial Portuguese and Spanish. So if they can why shouldn't we?

If it were new Americana slang, them know born the Brits not to include and recognize it in their dictionary but since it's us now

Bad English is poor English, and there is no excuse. Travel around and you'll appreciate that every nationalty drops bombs including the English. However we in Nigeria stick out for our love of unnecessary tautology and outrageous grammar while keeping a straight face!

The Serving Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, says many Nigerian pastors get away with fake prophecies because their members fail to challenge them when the prophecies don't come true.

Bakare said this on Sunday during a church service at the Latter Rain Assembly in Lagos, televised on ChannelsTV.

He said materialism had been masquerading as prosperity in the churches, lamenting that materialism had eaten deep into the soul of the church.

He said, "People don't know the difference between materialism and prosperity. Men become so materialistic that the size of their accounts and the number of their congregation give them a platform, whether God is with them or not, whether Satan is the one doing mahuru, mahuru."

"Ask anybody in a church what is a success. Tell me the truth. Fame, power, prestiges, money, are what we consider success. From God's perspective, that is zero because you can get those from Satan and he would waste your life in no time."

While rebuking pastors for merchandising the "anointing of God," the cleric recalled a story of the mother-in-law of one of his friends.

He said, "I remember the story of a friend, the mother-in-law was part of a church of a pastor (I won't mention name). The man was preaching a hot message that the Lord just said to him that if anyone would give one million naira to the church, in one month, he or she would get N10m back. He said if you don't get it, come back for your money.

I 100% agree with him, the gullible sheeple are the cause of all these fake MOGs littering the place.

However I must say that even Bakare has made his own popular prophecies that did not come true and thats why I don't take him serious as an MOG either.
