What's happening now is exactly what happened in 1984. Devaluation brought death to Nigeria after Buhari was over-thrown by IBB in 1985. The only thing that remains to be seen is a coup.
With which Army? The Army that is fiercely loyal to Buhari as he is cleaning up the rot that has seen them lost comrades in arms and colleagues.

Guy, there will be no coup so get that notion off your mind.

It has always been like that. The only reason people are beginning to realise it now is because of social media. I lived and worked there in the early 2000's and believe me when i tell you that it was hell on earth. Everyone there is basically a thug. Even the women. To give you an example; a friend of mine saw this chick he liked and decided to toast her. She went back home and told all her brothers and they all trooped to his office demanding he pay ten thousand Naira as penalty for toasting their sister without permission. 10K in those days was a lot money. He had no choice but to pay to avoid embarrassment. The fear of an Ekwere girl is the beginning of wisdom. There, ladies and gentlemen is their power in Rivers state. Extortion and the mob mentality. Countless times we would have the so called youths come to our office to demand that we employ them or they burn down the place even though they were not qualified. Another example; Every local govt would print out stickers which you had to buy in order to operate a branded vehicle as a sales rep. So, to operate in Rumuola you need a set totally different from the ones in Rumuokoro. And these didn't come cheap. It is either you pay or you were held hostage and your vehicle possibly impounded. I remember spending about 100k in one year and i got audited because of it. My company didn't believe me until the auditor came personally and witnessed the horrors i had to go through just to do my job. The auditor later told me that there was no way in hell he could do what i did. I asked for a transfer as soon as the audit was done, just to get back at them and resigned when they didn't. I already had another job lined up. grin grin
10k for just toasting. Thank god he did not go all the way. If he wanted to eat and run ko. Na im grave be that.

New Niger Delta Militant Group Dares Buhari, Vows To Cripple Nigeria's Economy

The Niger Delta Avengers, a new militant group in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, has threatened to make the country's economy worse by acts of sabotage, particularly in the oil sector. The threat, made via a statement issued by the group, is a response to comments made by President Muhammadu Buhari during his visit to China.

While in China, Buhari had said that oil saboteurs will be treated harshly like Boko Haram terrorists, a comment the group considers a denigration of the Niger Delta struggle and an indication that the Federal Government considers oil more important than the lives of people of the Niger Delta region.

"The recent proclamation of the Federal Government to bombard the people of the Niger Delta, as stated in Beijing, China, is a clear indicator that President Buhari and his Northern brothers-led government scales the oil in the Niger Delta far more important than the lives of the Niger Deltans," the group said.

As proof of the Niger Delta Avengers potency, the group cited the visit of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State to the Forcados Terminal, where they inspected the SPDC 48 inches export pipeline, which it claimed to have blown up. "They never cared to see for themselves what the natives (Ogulagha people), the host community, are going through in the hands of SPDC as a result of the oil and gas exploration for decades. Ogulagha community is just one such case across the Niger Delta," the statement added.

The militant organisation explained that the decision of the government to send the Minister of the Environment and the Vice President on a visit to the Forcados Terminal after it was blown up shows the importance of the facility to the economic well-being of the country.

"Bonny Export Terminal, Bonny Island in Rivers State, Chevron and Ugborodo community in Delta State are the heartbeat of Nigeria's economy, but they are all facing same hardship as the Ogulagha community, which hosts the Forcados Terminal.

"It is a slight on our struggle and quite embarrassing for Mr. President to liken us to his kinsmen (Boko Haram), who are hell-bent on swimming in innocent blood until they Islamize the nation," added the Niger Delta Avengers.

The organisation also accused the President of deliberately ignoring the menacing activities of Fulani herdsmen, but paying attention to pipeline vandalism, which he wants to use as a pretext to punish the Niger Delta Region. This, it argued, provides further proof that the Federal Government values oil more than the well-being of the people of the Niger Delta. While claiming it takes no pleasure in violence, the group, however, said it will continue blowing up pipelines to protest the marginalisation of the Niger Delta.

It dared the Presidency to do its worst, saying: "The Presidency can go ahead and setup a permanent security force, as stated by the Vice President when he visited the SPDC, Forcados Terminal. We are not deterred by such threats as we are highly spirited and shall continue blowing up pipelines until the Niger Delta people are no longer marginalized by the Nigerian actors. Yes, the military have sworn to lay down their lives to protect Nigeria. We have on our part sworn to do whatever is necessary to safeguard the interest of the Niger Delta people."
The group also invited the attention of the Federal Government and the international community to the plight of the Niger Delta people and alleged that other forms of pipeline vandalism are encouraged and by officials of the Nigerian armed forces.

"We want the general public to note that the Nigerian Armed Forces collects three Naira per litre of the sum accruing from the total number of barrels loaded by any vessel in all illegal bunkering activities referred to as 'black oil business,' it claimed.
It followed this up with a piece of advice to the Chinese government and the international community that any country that lends Nigeria money is doing so at its own risk. "There will be no litre of crude oil to service the loan deal they planning to do. This also goes to the international oil companies in the country to adhere to our warnings and advise the Federal Government to heed our demands, especially the development of the Niger Delta Region," the group concluded.

Why didn't they shut down the economy when their brother was in power? All the monies paid to them what did they do with it? Yes, spent it on fancy cars, women and closing down clubs in Lagos whilst the supposed people they are supposedly fighting wallowed still in property.
I have adjusted to having not regular power so they can do their worst. I know it wouldn't better right now but as long as where the present status quo is heading to, I support it fully. A bunch of rascals cannot dictate our country.
Soon oil revenues will not be our only major source of income and we will see how they can coerce and bully us Nigerians to their whims and caprices.
We are watching.
Osinbajo, if you don't enforce the permanent security force there, then your god is a bastard.

Dear nairalanders, please i need your advice on what to do. My wife had been seducing men in the compound where we live lately. We are just newly married, less than a year now. We live in a story building and the windows are made in glasses. One could easily see through them especially in the night. So, what she does is each time she finishes taking her birth, she exposes her body knowing quit well that men around can see her through the window. She does it in the morning, during the day when she notices that i am not around and in the night.

The day i discovered, i confronted her, she said it was her body that it was not none of my business. Though we were quarreling before then. But i knew that was not the first time, she has been doing it before because each time i open the windows in the morning, i always notice that people(men) will just be looking towards my direction. I kept wondering what they were looking at until the day i discovered.

Dear nairalanders, what can i do to make her stop it. Because its getting out of hand. Now she hides and do it and she knows i am not happy with her now.
Great nairalanders, please i need your advice. Thank you

We have loads of Nigerian born players playing in the lower leagues and we could tap into that and develop from there. The lower leagues are far better than the sham we call a professional league we call here.

We all knew she was working on her weight but this new photo of her is just simply amazing!

She shared it some minutes ago on instagram with this caption below:
You lose weight, maybe three or four pounds maybe much more. But you slip, have a bad day, or a "weak moment" and you eat something you shouldn't have. And what do you tell yourself? 'Now I've completely blown it!' I might as well really binge!

Beware the trap of perfectionism - aim to eat sensibly and healthily most of the time not all the time. Don't live under a self imposed dictatorship.
We all eat more than we should of the wrong kind of stuff now and then. Think of your weight as something that (once you've reached a healthy weight) can go up and down to some extent.

Have a 'sliding scale' in your mind of a couple of pounds either side your target weight. Everyone's weight fluctuates a bit and you should prepare for this. No one can live for long under a self imposed too harsh dictatorship. The whole idea is to enjoy the journey because it's the journey of a lifetime. Change what 'treats' mean to you.
Like I always say it's a mind game: all our lives we have been brainwashed; from childhood it's drummed into us that "treats" consist of fatty, sugary empty calorific stodge.
So what happens next? We start eating healthily and suddenly we have no treats. We feel deprived.

Of course a treat is whatever you decide it is. Is it really a treat to clog arteries, add unsightly fat, feel bad about yourself, risk diabetes and heart disease? Then out of guilt go on a binge?
Write down five treats that don't involve enhancing fat or sugar. Whether the treat is calling a friend, going for a walk, or even having a cup of special tea or coffee, we can all reward and comfort ourselves. It's how we do it that counts. Weight loss is not a cure-all
Don't expect weight loss to cure all of life's problems. Sure you'll be healthier, fitter and so on, and that will have positive and maybe unexpected positive ripple effects but, as a slimmer person, you'll still have a bad day in the office, moments of self doubt, times when you feel undervalued.
Believe it or not, many people feel let down when they become slimmer and then find that being slim doesn't solve all their problems in one go (i discovered that the hard way and it was a painful reality) to be continued.

Foreign AffairsRe: Dutch Prisons Are Closing Because The Country Is So Safe by scarred9jan(m): 7:29am On Mar 31, 2016
lolaxavier:
In 2013, 19 prisons in the Netherlands closed because the country didn't have enough criminals to fill them.

Now, five more are slated to close their doors by the end of the summer, according to internal documents obtained by The Telegraaf.

While these closures will result in the loss of nearly 2,000 jobs, only 700 of which will transition into other unknown roles within Dutch law enforcement, the trend of closing prisons follows a steady drop in crime since 2004.

The problem of empty jail cells has even gotten to the point where, last September, the country imported 240 prisoners from Norway just to keep the facilities full.

Still, according to The Telegraaf's report, Justice Minister Ard van der Steur announced to parliament that the cost of maintaining sparsely-filled prisons was cost-prohibitive for the small country.

A number of factors underlie the Netherlands' ability to keep its crime rate so low, namely, relaxed drug laws, a focus on rehabilitation over punishment, and an electronic ankle monitoring system that allows people to re-enter the workforce.

A study published in 2008 found the ankle monitoring system reduced the recidivism rate by up to half compared to traditional incarceration. Instead of wasting away in a jail cell, eating up federal dollars, convicted criminals are given the opportunity to contribute to society.

These measures all add up to an unbelievably low incarceration rate: Although the Netherlands has a population of 17 million, only 11,600 people are locked up. That's a rate of 69 incarcerations per 100,000 people.

The US, meanwhile, has a rate of 716 per 100,000 — the highest in the world. It's marked largely by its lack of attention to social services and rehabilitation programs once prisoners finish their sentences. Without a safety net to give them any other options, many fall back into their old habits.

Seeing as how the Netherlands is literally importing prisoners to keep jails full, larger countries like the US could learn a thing or two from the Dutch model.

The Netherlands is 67% non religious. Everybody minds their business. Igbo is legalized same with ashawo work. Tells you much about the correlation between religion and crime.

The Mary and Joseph story had a big part in it. The more I read, the more I felt like the authors were testing my Intelligence. Imagine a wife telling her husband that god impregnated her.
Once I found out that the creationist version of the beginning of life started to get comma, na so I start to dey doubt. I mean if a supposed infallible book starts having comma at the beginning, common sense tells you to read the rest with a pinch of salt. Another reason that started my path towards atheism was the question 'what if'. I asked myself what if I was born as a Muslim, for example and was totally enmeshed in it, I mean my whole family where muslim and 'Allah' was blessing us well and never lacked anything, if a christian came to preach about Jesus, would I ever believe him? I was born a Christian and that was my line of thinking 'what if I was born a muslim, would I believe in what Christianity says'? Gradually I became agnostic, which became a waste time. Its either your pro god or not. It was just recently, in fact Nairaland and Plaetton and his crew that got me reading works from atheists. Two years ago I didn't even know who the hell was Dawkins, Bennett or Hitchens were. Na for nairaland I started to know about them but I had been atheist for years without actually thinking I was atheist (I didn't even know there was a word for that). Natural selection, I guess.
Christianity EtcRe: Questions For Atheists (all Atheists Please Come In) by scarred9jan(m):
CoolUsername:
WARNING: Quite long.

It was a journey. It started when I was 14 and by 16, I was an agnostic atheist.

As a child, my parents encouraged a very strong reading culture in me and my siblings, we had wildlife, medical and general science encyclopedias, a massive Chamber's dictionary, a (now outdated) guide to the nations of the world, a pocketbook on the internet (this was around the late 90's and early 00's), and a shitload of business books.

I have always enjoyed learning about wildlife and the universe. After a while, I found it difficult to reconcile science with what the Bible says, for example, 'if the world is truly young, how did dinosaurs live before man' and 'if the world is actually old, that makes that particular part Bible allegorical, so what other parts of the Bible are allegorical'. I tried to find answers by reading through different websites of Christian apologetics, and although their explanations weren't totally convincing, I always told myself that was what faith was all about, so I HAD to believe.

As we grew older, our home gradually became a very devout household (although my siblings and I were less enthusiastic). I never quite mastered the art of playing sports, so I spent most of my leisure time watching TV and reading books - including the Bible. I read the Catholic Bible, the KJV, the NIV, the RSV, TEV, and the New World Translation. Trying to improve myself, I read 'Our Daily Bread, Word of the Day, Rhapsody of Realities, and rather reluctantly, Open Heavens (I've always found it a bit dull and wordy).

I drew comparisons between the beliefs of different Christian denominations and pentecostal churches, but never really saw how the denomination and church my parents picked were better than some of the others. The actions, and utterances of respected men of God were full of deceit that the people bought wholesale.

We even had a prophet who told us stuff and weird shi,t like that, but never seemed to know things that had any real impact on the world. One day, I decided to find out why scientists preferred evolution over creation; I was shocked to find all the overwhelming evidence in support of it. I then decided to read the Bible while sidelining all my personal biases, I saw that didn't hold up to reality, and that it had a very primitive and questionable morality (why would God kill gays if he made them that way? why would he endorse slavery? hy try to make it seem like females are somehow inferior? why are time and place such major factors in determining religion?), all the prior knowledge I had about it's history, the discord between the gospels and so on, that I had been putting in a hidden compartment in my brain suddenly became clear to me.

I realized that it was man made.

I then began observing the world in an unbiased manner, the religious Africa, Middle East, and to a lesser extent: South America are among some of the worst to live in the world. I would see people fall down during prayer but would stand my ground when the pastor is basically trying to push my head back while applying pressure to my temple, my observations finally gave me the courage to perform my final test, the prophet. She is a good friend to the family, if she found out I was testing her, it would have all come down on me, hard.

So I asked to tell me about a friend, someone who I completely made up. She told me that he was going to make me unserious.

I chuckled.

So that's my (long) story of deconversion.
I had a similar background. My parents are avid readers and we always had books around the house (my pop still reads 5 books concurrently). My mum (though she is quite religious in her later years) always brought back books, art works (my siblings and I broke quite a lot of figurines in our youth but that didn't stop me from reading about it) and brochures of other cultures from her travels (she kept a whole parlor specially filled with foreign arts.) By the time I was 10 I knew much about Japan, for example than the average Nigerian (I remember once there was an expo my mum had us attend on Japanese culture in the early 90s held at the Sharks Stadium in PH, being an inquisitive being I read a lot about Japan). With time I was reading books that were considered demonic (in religious terms) but it made a lot of sense (still enlightening). My late Grandpa although a staunch member of the Anglican church (he was a priest) had the English translation of the Koran and I read it back to back (no pun intended).
I believe the younger generation (am in my 30s) would be more rational in time with the advent of the internet. My generation was not that lucky. Knowledge is key and they have all the tools to succeed. They just need steering towards the right generation.

BusinessRe: Entrepreneurship In Nigeria Is A Scam And A Multiplier Of Poverty by scarred9jan(m): 12:35pm On Mar 14, 2016

Friend, go over the post once again. I neither wrote that all entrepreneurs must be inventors nor all investors have to be entrepreneurs. Thank God you own a fashion outlet,so seems you are out of the unemployment market. But my major concern is how to make maximum profit from education to eradicate unemployment and generate real time jobs. Engineering graduates need to immensely contribute the technological development of the nation by setting up their own engineering businesses and not by opening beer palour businesses cos of unemployment. Graduates from other courses also have their contributions to make as well.

Nigeria needs more than fashion outlets, we need garment factories. We need to set up companies that will turn wool to clothes. We need to put an end to the massive importation of foreign wears. Cos I know that there is no tailor(or fashion designer)that can do that in Nigeria. We should learn to be able to start small scale business in cloth production from the raw materials. We should develop our machine design and production capacity to be able to create finished products(such as various garments) that can compete with the foreign ones.
Another problem with Nigeria is our 'I' mentality. You talk about an Economic issue and he could only think of his personal success.

cloudgoddess would disagree with you by calling Newton a pseudoscientist. Even though no 'real' scientist has ever observed a set of species changing into another (removing a key word - observation - from the defination of science), she has faith that evolution must be true. She'll solidify her points by citing several instances of adaptation (micro-evolution) - a simple characteristic of a living organism and then pass that off as macro-evolution.

I want to agree with Alvin Toffler who said "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn"
You know Toffler is an atheist, right?
