AZeD1: Don't get me wrong, the group are a bunch of political jobbers and I don't care about them. My own is if Buhari is impeding the work of Emefile, he should resign. It's the same advice I'd give to Kemi and I expected Kachikwu to have resigned since.
My quoting you was just too point out that the CBN plays a role in the economy (a big one at that)and I believe the CBN governor should be more powerful than the minister of finance. On monetary term yes but on fiscal term no. But the question is 1. Are we taking the appropriate monetary policies? To me is a yes on short and medium terms. 2.how? The bank have offered some incentives to manufacturers and to agriculture. 3. What is holding the positive result? No fiscal policy to back it up 4. How? There is no clear cut policies to aid these businesses to remain viable. |
Politics › Re: Recession: Resign Within The Next 21 Days, Northern Youths Tells Emefiele by Scholes007(m): 11:55pm On Oct 05, 2016 |
AZeD1: Actually the CBN is kind of in charge of the economy. The finance minister is in charge of the FG's finances.( The finance minister is more like an accountant to the FG.)
Monetary policy == CBN Fiscal policy == Finance Minister.
http://keydifferences.com/difference-between-fiscal-policy-and-monetary-policy.html https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/money_12855.htm http://www.economicshelp.org/blog/1850/economics/difference-between-monetary-and-fiscal-policy/ I will like to avoid the reason the group made for his resignations, because it is clear they want to be saling dollar as they used to... Let's be realistic, the CBN cannot afford any other option apart from withholding and controlling the amount of foreign currency especially the dollar to at least save the naira, mitigate inflation and regulate the depiction of our foreign reserve (which we can give them pass mark on). It is no longer news that Nigeria is in deep recession, with little source of foreign exchange, the economic activties has slowed down and local companies are struggling. The economic term of the presidency should bring out packages that will aid in boosting economic activties, spend more money and borrow if need be. You see this is what will aid the CBN to take more actions. The ball is in the court of the minister and his team to bring out packages that will be compatible with reality on ground. |

So CBN governor don start to dey coordinate the economy baa? I believe the president should replace the current minister of economy. CBN gov needs a focused and sound economic planners from executive (presidency). The presidency should bring policies and programs to aid the CBN else we have nothing but wait until the naira falls to bottomless pit. This not time for propaganda neither is it time for the usual we are the messiah others are failures. |

Suprnov3r: So your brilliant comeback is to evoke the chinese slowdown as a way to validate buharis senile forex controls?
Puhleez, try harder. China and Nigeria are not in the same page. I brought china only to show that whatever buhari had in mind to achieve was dead on arrival. It is an archaic system that doesn't work. The chinese control theirs but with a system that is totally unworkable here. Let's not make this about China
What did he gain by doing that?... nothing. Naira still slumped afterwards as you pointed out. All the dollars were pulled out immediately he relaxed it
What did we loose by doing that?... investor confidence, everyone rushed out even those that were not directly hit by oil price slumps. The lack of investment has pushed more pressure on the naira dragging it down to were we are today
Bottomline is that China owns the largest portion of US govt bonds outside of the US. Nigeria has no basis trying what buhari attempted. Only a foolish man will go to a gun fight with a knife.
Everyone including IMF adviced against that move. Moody downgraded Nigeria. The world bank and all thinktanks around the world cannot be all wrong.Your hero obviously is a stubborn man and his stubbornness is costing millions of people their livelihood. It is foolishness to edge him on
Your assertions begs for a reply.
The MPR is usually raised to match the inflation rate. This is done so as to ensure their is sufficient funds in the banks to forestall banks crashing if people panic and mass withdraw, hence it is a precautionary move.
The problem is that the govt is directly driving the inflation through tighter controls on every sector at the same time. They cannot be closing borders, tightening forex, banning imports at the same time increasing taxes and deploying TSA. The cumulative effect is CAUSING a STAGFLATION
They are abusing the economy. It's like beating a child over and over again with different policies and expecting the child not to cry. Inflation is the natural tendency of such a battered economy. To make matters worse they are now increasing MPR to protect banks from a liquidity crisis. The only cure for this inflation is to allow the banks give out more money by reducing the MPR for investments to flow but they are doing the reverse.
In fact, I give kudos to Nigerians for being too patient.and resilient. Countries like Greece didn't see these kind of wahala before they screamed for bailouts.
It is all good sha. I don tire to type. Whatever they do we are all in it together We are all saying the same thing, We shouldnot lose focus that the monetry policy ratio is done in consideration of the interest rate. I responded to what mr el rufia said about interest rate and his accusation on the gov of cbn. You should also read where I stated that the economic team of mr president should up their game with policies that will ease and remove unnecessary problems. |

naijababe: I personally would love to see some regulation at exit not entry. Excuse me I have to deviate a little. I do not think anyone in his right senses will considered the half baked logic from mr el rufia. The inflation rate in uk stands at 0.5% or so, hence there is nothing wrong with the policy to reduce their interest rate to 1% on the short run to shore up their economy. Nigeria on the other hand has an inflation rate at double digit at about 11%-13% so I don't see anything wrong if we put our interest rate at 14% unless you want lending to be unattractive. Now i see also nothing wrong with the policy to reduce the number of international money agency by the cbn. It will help check some illegalities involved in transfer of fund especially out of the nation. Yes we have problems with this decision but at moment it is ideal for the health of our economy. The economic team of mr president should up their game and bring out helpful policies at least it will help the bank come out of unnecessary uncertainities |

DCTrendy: What re you saying?
Emefiele just reduced the money transfer agents to 3 last week!
In 2015 alone, Nigerians in Diaspora sent home over N6 trillion Naira. But your CBN governor is doing his best to reduce means of sending money to naija to just 3 companies.
You dont even need to have C6 in O'level Economics to know that was a really bad move.
Every country throws their door open and receive inflow, but CBN is closing your own and you re here defending him?
If i give you a stud ehn.... Can the same means used to bring in money be used to send out money too? How much is leaving the nigeria shores unregulated? Don't you think the forex restriction will promote illegalities when money transfers are not checked? |
