QUICK TIP!!!

This is for those who want to write strong letters of motivation. I figured a way that might work if executed properly. I wanted to transfer from my department into another department which to be honest, I don't think I'm very qualified for. What did I do? I scheduled an appointment with the department's Graduate Coordinator. I went to her office and I asked her questions about the department. I asked stuff like how ranked the department is in the US, what the course is really like especially the courses students are mostly scared to take, placement of recent graduates and what they went on to do with their lives, I asked if they admitted students with backgrounds from totally different disciplines and the chance of getting in (and if so, what are they really considering from such students), what the department was moving towards in terms of development, etc. It was a trap cheesy She told me everything about the department, what they're looking for, was indirectly bragging about how this and that, etc. Lobatan.

I went back home, and composed a letter of motivation. I wrote about myself in a way that plugged into everything that was going on in that department. I personalized everything she told me and made it look like that's what I'm really looking for. Don't want to go into much details, but I really wrote it in a way that reflected all she told me during our meeting. Even my future plans mirrored what most of their recent graduates went on to do. I picked particular interest in that course she said many people didn't like haha cheesy I submitted my application on Monday, Tuesday afternoon, they had already made a decision and she asked for another appointment to come so she'd show me around again and get me more familiar with the department. Na my $255 Paco Rabanne perfume work that one, She wan see baba again cheesy

Now, how to execute this plan. I think you should call the grad coordinator of the department you want to gain admission into. If possible, schedule an appointment via email and let it be a convenient time for them to talk. If you can't call, email could work too. Have a list of questions to ask. The point is to get them to tell you about the department, about the students already in the department, what they're really looking for, what students have gone on to do with their lives after school, etc. Get them to talk, talk, talk. After the conversation, carry your fingers and write a letter that's going to plug into the scope.

Don't know if this makes any sense, I rushed it. Apologies for any typos and incoherence. Cold wan finish my fingers. it's 24F/-4C here. Bye.
Great tips!!!
When you scheduled the appointment with the Graduate Coordinator, did she know of your intention to switch to her department?....perhaps, she may not have given you all the info if she had known. grin
Please what was d main reason u gave her for scheduling such appointment with her?...... because I have noticed that most of the Grad coordinators generally refer people to a link to learn about their graduate program on the website when they get email on Grad school inquiry.

For those of us who are still in naija without such opportunity to visit a grad coordinator in his/her office, could you please suggest how to approach these coordinators via phone or email so they can freely give such valuable info about their dept wink

Try and use WES evaluator to determine your score an a 4point scale. Some schools in the middle of no where grin still accept 2.5/4 for admission for MSC like :

Best of luck..... Don't give up yet

But have to work hard on GRE and TOEFL to compensate for you low GPA

Mail schoos too....

Chairman since you are interested in Postgraduate, what you should do immediately is to start contacting Professors.
The most effective approach is to use google to seek profs that need RA/GA or that have multiple positions for MECH/CHEM
use the phrase below to search "I am looking for self-motivated Ph.D students Mechanical"
you can thank me later.
Create a simple mail. make sure you follow the instructions on the profs personal page. (this is the most effective approach)

Thanks you so much for this secret. However, it appears most of these profs seek for PhD student only ....will I ever find such opportunity for MS student? Anyways, I will use this format n keep searching till something comes out.
Once again, thank u, I so appreciate ur suggestion n assistance.
Also, is it also good to contact grad program coordinators who are not openly seeking for RA/GA students privately via email? If yes, please what's the format of such email?

Can you convince yourself why switching will be a plus for your career? .....

E.g. You can work on Energy research in Chem, Mech, Met & Mat, Biological, Agricultural or even Elect.

As for the schools, you'll need to get a ranking list of grad programs in MechE, check the ones that fit your profile and dig up more.

All the best!

Thanks a lot boss....your contribution is highly valued.

Greetings to everyone in the house. Please, I'd appreciate any piece of advice from the gurus here with regards to my admission and chances for funding for Fall 2017.

My undergraduate major was Petroleum Engineering and I don't really want to further in that area 'cos it's quite streamlined and also considering the current situation in d upstream sector of d oil n gas industry, I don't think I'd be wise to do Masters in d same field.

I am considering switching to Mechanical Engineering (or something close) which I think has a better job prospects over there in the US.....kindly correct me if I'm wrong. The problem now is that most schools i checked in d US require UG degree in mechanical/aerospace engineering as a prerequisite for Masters/PhD in Mechanical Engineering....which means taking some UG course before d masters program n this requires more money. shocked

Please can anyone kindly help with schools where I can be admitted in Mechanical Engineering with full or partial funding for Fall 2017. Funding of any form (GA, TA, RA, etc) is a priority, and the schools ranking for now doesn't matter to me.

Please, can someone also suggest other STEM courses which I can easily switch to in order to secure funding and for better job prospects after graduation? Ur assistance will be highly appreciated. I want to start applying immediately to meet up with most schools priority deadlines...

Below is a summary of my profile:
UG Degree: Petroleum Engineering
CGPA: 4.23/5.00 (3.57/4.00 after WES conversion)
GRE : 305 (154Q, 152V, AW 3.5)
TOEFL: About to write
Years of Work Experience: 3+

Don't know how to proceed now.....Please make una help me.... embarassed

Thank you for this, however, av tried every means to access the test but all my effort has proved futile. On the website, I was only allowed to add paid tutorial to my cart while the free practice test login was not found. Can u please delineate how u access the test.

Which one be paid tutorial again?....dunno about that

See eh, just click on the link i posted earlier, it will take u to d Kaplan online bookstore for GRE. You should see "register" beside the "GRE Premier 2017" or the "GRE Premier 2016", click on register and it takes u to another page where u will enter the key words provided above for either the 2016 or 2017 version.

Then the selected version (GRE Premier 2017 or GRE Premier 2016) is added to your cart, note that the value in ur shopping cart should be $0 because it's assumed that you have the hard copy of the book since u have provided the last word in a particular chapter as demanded.

From the shopping cart page, click on "proceed and checkout", and u will be prompted to either sign in or set up ur account..... Then go to your profile after signing in and access all the goodies in the Premier version of the Kaplan which include the 5 full online tests.

Please lemme know if u are successful....i just tried these steps and they all worked.

Cheers!

For those asking for the access to the Kaplan Online Practice Test, Here:

Follow the link below:
https://www.kaptest.com/pages/booksonline#gre

The access i have is for the GRE Premier 2016 and GRE Premier 2017. Each of the versions contains about 5 full practice test. I was able to go thru some of the practice tests in the 2016 version but couldnt go through the test in 2017 version due to time constraints.

For GRE Premier 2016, you would be asked the input the last word in a particular chapter of the book when you click on register, the word is text. And for the GRE Premier 2017, the word is response. You would have to sign up with them to have access to these resources.
Hope this helps...

All the best in your best.

Just take your normal breakfast in the morning before going for the test....you should know which food when taken as breakfast keeps your mind alive........go for such tongue
You are not allowed to even touch your phone until after the whole test. Though u can go to the centre with ur phone, and you will be provided with a locker to lock your stuffs up while taking the test.

During the 10mins break, you can take light food if u have. Chocolate bar and and energy drink (eg, Reb Bull, Power Horse, etc) are good food to take during the break as they keep ur mind awake and give u d instant energy to fire on stronger cheesy
It's not advisable to take junk foods during the break as these may cause fatigue for you during the last stage of the test...you don't wanna feel bored and tired of the convoluted Verbal Comprehension passage after taking junk foods grin

I wish you great success in your test.

And this devilish test I finally took today...lol. First of all, I would like to specially thank everyone here for ur contributions n motivations. They were valuable!

My test came in the order QVQVQ. One of d Quant sections was quite easy for me n I was able to finish all, but d other 2 sections i couldn't finish because they were harder. And my first verbal was simpler than d 2nd one.

...then, my preparation experience...

I prepared for less than 2 months. My work schedule is really tight that I even work on Saturdays at times. So I studied mostly on Sundays n sometimes during the week if I come back early from work. Kudos to drhopeful, I hail boss!...it's not easy to combine GRE prep with tight work schedule n still succeed with such great score
.....never knew we were in d same center today, I will pm u biko.

Even though my scores weren't good, I still want to give a detailed analysis of my prep experience so that others could perhaps learn from my mistake and ultimately improve on it to get better score.

Well, my preparation for d test was quite eclectic. I started with Gruber in Quantitative. After going through their strategies, I took my first full practice test from the official guide to GRE (ie, d paper test1) and scored Q150 V149. I was a bit depressed. At that point, I didn't wanna take d powerprep test cos I wanted to preserve it after I had done more practice . After taking d first practice test from d GRE official guide booklet, I discovered that the practice questions in d Gruber which I was using were a bit simpler than d ones in d official guide. Though Gruber has good strategies in Quant comparison especially for beginners....n these helped.

Following my first practice test, I decided to check d questions I failed n noted them as my weak points. I came here n quickly grabbed a material posted by someone (Manhattan 5lbs) for more practice in my weak areas...lol. At this time, I had roughly a month to my test date.

Meanwhile, while I was practicing with Manhattan 5lb, I also did some couple of free online tests by Kaplan. My scores in these tests were just fluctuating. I think It's advisable to use the Kaplan online test only to gauge ur pacing as their questions (which could sometimes be harder than d real GRE) do not really reflect d real nature GRE question. Please use Kaplan online test only if u have copious time for ur preparation....don't spend much time on it like I did. I actually spent time on Kaplan practice which wasn't good for me. Someone here advised that d Kaplan online test are easier than d actual GRE. So I stopped practicing with Kaplan online test n focused more on Official ETS materials as I knew there wasn't enof time for me again...

After more practice with Manhattan 5lb n ETS materials, I took the Manhattan free test and my score improved a bit. Then i took d second paper test in d official guide, still, there wasn't much improvement in my score. I almost gave up....lol.

I don register already, money cannot fit waste oo.....so i kept on practicing with Manhattan (both Quant n Verbal). Few days to my test, I was granted d permission to take some days off work so I had more time for my prep.....it was then I realized that there were other areas I needed to work on before my test but couldn't because of time constraint. So I just focused on ETS materials.
Then 4 days to my test day, I took d powerprep test 1, and a day to d date, I took d 2nd test in powerprep, ensuring I adhered to d test regulations while doing them...

And for my verbal prep, I used just Manhattan n ETS materials, then with d memrise app which someone once recommended here. D memrise really helped with my vocab for d SE and TC cos I'm sure most of my right answers in verbal came from SE n TC. GRE comprehension was one of my greatest weaknesses. Learnt lately that Princeton review is good for verbal but I didn't have time to check it out...

Finally, GRE requires time for prep with good materials. I'd recommend Manhattan, ETS materials and Magoosh videos (if u can get them). I watched magoosh video on AWA n it was really concise n helpful...that's d main thing I used for AWA.

Below were my scores:

Kaplan MST1-5
Av Quant - 153
Av Verbal - 147

Manhattan MST1
Quant - 157
Verbal - 156

Official Paper Test 2
Quant - 155
Verbal - 149

Powerprep 1
Quant - 156
Verbal - 148

Powerprep 2
Quant - 151
Verbal - 155

Actual Test Scores
Quant - 154
Verbal - 151
AWA - Awaiting Report.

So it's advisable u take d powerprep test towards ur test date (when u must have prepared enough) as it could give u an idea of what ur scores would be in d actual test...

I wish those yet to write theirs ALL d best....

Prob of picking a male in a group of 25 = 0.44
No of males in the group = 0.44*25 = 11

Prob that the selected person is a male born before 1960 = 0.28
No of males born before 1960 = 0.28*25 = 7

Thus, no of males in the group born in 1960 or later = total no males - males born before 1960
= 11-7 = 4

I think I saw this same question in Powerprep.
Boss! Thanks for the detailed solution.

I thought that the Prob that the selected person is a male born before 1960 should be = 0.28*11 since it appears d selection was made from d pool of 11 males. Or could my interpretation of d question be wrong.

I also posted this same question on d Facebook group and someone else interpreted d same way I did.

However, the answer from ETS is 4, a bit confusing though...

Please I need your opinion on the answer. Please can any of d gurus here kindly help with d answer.....would supply d right answer n my opinion thereafter. See d question below:

One person is to be selected at random from a group of 25 people. The probability that the selected person will be a male is 0.44, and the probability that the selected person will be a male who was born before 1960 is 0.28. What is the number of males in the group who were born in 1960 or later?
