An estimated 35-40% of all the heroin coming into the United States is brought by Nigerian couriers. In 1989, the United States and Nigeria established a joint Counter-Narcotics Task Force. Lack of cooperation by Nigerian authorities in combating the drug trafficking problem led to a decision by the Clinton Administration in March 1998, as in 1994 and 1996, to put Nigeria on the State Department's list of non-cooperative drug trafficking nations.

So, was Babangida a drug baron? There is sufficient suspicion and information, especially outside of the country to link him with drug trafficking in the 1980s and the early 1990s. However, because he has always avoided circumstances that could make him give answers to those allegations, he has never been pinned down. His failure to travel to a country like the United States, where he is believed to be wanted, adds fuel to speculations about his past. Perhaps, if he were to stop raising legal obstacles to the murder of Dele Giwa, a chance to question him about Gloria Okon may bring up the most closely guided open secret of his regime

Could people add to her crime the ones of being a drug dealer- I am surprised people are unaware that both Maryama and her husband were major drug barons. Add the numerous European kids who got hooked on drug because of Maryam and her Husband. No shaking African Mafia  cool

I believe they are questioning you with reference to Nigeria's stability
It seems your view is being really clouded. I do defend MEND in person though I might criticize them on NL, but fact remains MEND is considered in the same vein as a terrorist group in America. That is what average americans are taught in school. No one has the time to hear about shell and chevron texaco. Infact that is the first thing that comes to the mind of educated and informed americans when u mention you are from Nigeria- the "terrorist" group MEND

They are really seen as against american oil interests. America does not care about what happens to ppl in the ND. I have tried explaining it to some people, and then they ask what is the Nigerian government doing? Then I just have to shut up.

I agree with SEFAGO---- no such thing as moderate Islam. Islam just like Xtianity is open to personal interpretations and extremely subjective ideologies.
Moreover christianity was always a violent religion before, but no where in the new testament is violent proselytizing encouraged.

I am not biased towards any religion but the truth is the truth

remember Usman Dan Fodio?
Politics › Re: Islamic Northern Nigeria Blaming America And Western Education For Bombing by SEFAGO(m): 12:41am On Dec 28, 2009
there are countries practicing moderate Islam.
Doesnt really matter its all name name. Islam is generally a violently proselytizing religion  However, it depends on how individuals read it.  If the religious leaders of this moderate countries decide to change how they interpreted Islam then things would change.

IMO, Nigeria should go the way of Turkey. My idea of Islam is secular Muslims.
Politics › Re: Islamic Northern Nigeria Blaming America And Western Education For Bombing by SEFAGO(m): 12:34am On Dec 28, 2009
there is moderate Islam.

The problem is when moderates turn into extremists.
I repeat, Islam can never be moderate. Its the individual that decides. We could do without religion in my own opinion.

You are looking in the wrong place, because academics don't determine foreign policy. That is the job of diplomats and policy institutions.
Thats the word, I was trying to find diplomats and policy institutes. Dont forget these diplomats are taught by the academics and academics are the ones usually quoted, and who do research for policy institutions. I remember sitting in a lecture where this guy kept on referring to the terrorist institution in Nigeria called MEND and how America has to cut ties with countries like Nigeria with significant terrorist activities, by seeking alternative energy. This isn't a jab, if you could find one respected diplomat or policy who doesn't consider MEND a terrorist group.

Infact long before Umar, most americans I met who studied international policy at always asked me about the growing terrorist threat by the MEND.

like I said before- is the region he comes from, known for moderate islam.
There is no such thing as moderate islam. It is the individual that decides what Islam really means.

He schooled in UCL london. That means it is western education. If he schooled in Yemen and Egypt then let us assume it is Islamic education in which hausa moslems prefer. Those maistainstine and boko haramites are they not adherents to islamic education?
Doesn't really matter. Infact, that is probably why he did this. He likely came in contact with these terrorist when in london. They have a huge presence in london, and his extremist views were fed by his stay in Europe.
Politics › Re: MEND's Press Release On The Bombing Incidence Could Cause More Collateral Damage by SEFAGO(m): 12:18am On Dec 28, 2009
There is nothing wrong with MEND looking for international alliances. Better to be prepared than have another Odi or Gbaramatu.
Well they are looking in the worng place. From experience, MEND is classified as a terrorist group by academics all over America. I spend 85% of my time trying to convince americans that MEND is not a terrorist group but a social movement. However I have not been successful grin
