Long post!!! (pls shorten post if you want to reply)

Been a silent reader, can’t thank you all enough for your selfless work, it really helped me. I‘m adopting ogidigan’s method because I think dropping a profile is important. I was desperate for peoples profiles to know if their circumstance was similar to mine.

1st time applicant (though I have an EE profile). 30 year old married (separated) female, self sponsored, living and working in the UK & Nigerian nationality. I studied computing in bsc & msc and I build business software so this is a logical progression- I explained this & that I wanted a promotion in my LOE as reason for study.

VAC: London
Upfront med: Oct 2022
Application submission: 9 Dec 2022
Biometrics: 19 Dec 2022
Medicals passed: 3 Feb 2023
PPR: 3 Feb 2023
Sent passport: 6 Feb 2023
Received passport: 15 Feb 2023
Session: Aug 2023
DLI: UBC

GC key portal
Education gap: 6 years
Program: MBA
Duration: 16 months
POF1: 4 months bank statement showing 12 months tuition (rather than my total tuition, so just 80%)
Source: Salary (Didn’t touch salary during the 4 months I needed for bank statement).
Source evidence: Showed 1 months payslip and job confirmation letter.
POF2: GIC certificate of 10k CAD for one year maintenance.
POF3: scholarship of 40k CAD (50% off my tuition)
POF4: Deposit of 5k CAD (uni refused me paying any tuition until enrolment)

Proof of Ties:
Showed ties to Nigeria by mentioning my parents in Nigeria. Showed ties to UK with my residence permit, wedding certificate to husband (Brit), my registered company & tax documents, my property documents. Obviously not traveling with hubby so I used he and my sister that lives with me as ties. Also Mentioned how the average earning of my field in Canada is less than Uk so I’ll be inclined to return to the Uk (lol I don’t plan to).

Travel history : 9 European countries
Rejections: 1 US visa in 2016 (due to my stupidity lol, I didn’t know what “residence” meant)

Docs submitted:
- POF
- LOE (with UK residence permit, registry marriage cert, Ielts result (optional), Change of name affidavit, degree certs, professional certifications, resume (I couldn’t fit it in the IMM doc). In my LOE, i wrote an explanation for proof of fund, proof of ties, reason for study (this is extremely important as it’s the 3 things you’re marked on).
- The IMMs that applied to me.
- Visa stamps on current intl passport.
- screenshot of email from Uni confirming they didn’t want any instalment towards my tuition.
- Upfront med cert
- Letter for internship (coop work permit)
- Conditional Offer letter (they were waiting for my transcripts)

Congratulations..

Hi Nairaland family 👪. I'm new hew in terms of contributing, but old in followership. I've benefited immensely. That said. I'm willing to guide you in writing a structured and strong SOP. Some of the tips that will guide you include the following

1. Introduction/Background Personal Information
2. The admission details- e.g. institution, commencement/completion dates, location in Canada, tuition, DLI, student number etc
3. Reasons for Choosing the institution, program and Canada
4. Educational and Career Information
5. Career Objectives after completion of studies
6. Family 👪 details and information- parents, spouse, siblings, children etc
7. Travel History
Assets and Sources of Fund
8. Other information
9. Conclusion

Please note that this is note a brochure from IRCC or an approved guidelines, but I've used it for about 5 people successfully, without any rejection, including my humble self (twice)

Thank you sir

The family wealth is not just proof of funds it's also proof of economic home ties.

In terms of home ties, why would you or your wife return to Nigeria?

Since you're both on temp visas in the UK. You need to show proof that your Nigeria company has a lot going for it and its something you're coming back to continue.

You will need to describe how your wife is supporting the business remotely and how getting her degree in Canada will further help execute her responsibilities.

But you mentioned that she's been working for over a year, is it full time? And is this on a post graduate work permit?

Thank you for your detailed advice. Yes we both on post graduate work visa.

I believe you have received responses regarding the school. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about the school's accommodation and social amenities. But rest assured that CBU is a DLI and the programs are PGWP-eligible.

Most business programs fit your profile. Let me know if you want me to apply to any of these programs. I don’t charge for school admission, but you must pay the application fee, if applicable.

PPR ALERT!!! (Long post)
MY PROFILE:
I am a 40-year old self-sponsored applicant.
Over 12 years experience in oil & gas engineering.
Sources of fund: Full time employment in oil and gas engineering + Private business + Real estate.
I applied alone (used immediate family members as home ties).
Other home ties: Study leave approval + landed property and buildings + personal business + cars + pension.
Travel history : 3 African countries + 1 middle east country.
DLI: Uottawa (Masters prog).
Study plan: career advancement from Snr. Engineer to Engineering manager (Note: my 1st degree was in engineering).
1st APPLICATION:
1st application submitted June 13th 2022.
Biometrics: June 16th 2022.
Upfront medicals: July 29th , 2022.
POF: $48,000CAD in personal savings account + Paid 1st year full tuition of $19,000 CAD and 10,000CAD GIC.
1st application refused 19th Oct 2022.
Ordered CBSA and GCMS notes: 25th October 2022.
Refusal reasons: (1.) Insufficient documentation for source of funds as earnings were not commensurate with declared savings. (2.) proposed study not a reasonable expense given the high cost of intl studies and funds available.
2nd APPLICATION:
2nd application submitted 1st Dec 2022.
POF: $71,000CAD in personal savings account + Paid 1st year full tuition of $19,000 CAD and 10,000CAD GIC.
HOW I ADDRESSED MY PREVIOUS REFUSAL: Honestly, the VO was correct about the fact that my monthly earnings were not commensurate with savings shown in my account. This was because a lump sum payment for a property sold in 2020 was made into my bank account (over N10m). I attached an excerpt of bank statement showing the transaction date, deed of transfer and land survey docs. I also attached some copies of my previous pay slips and excerpts of bank statement showing salaries and benefits from my previous employers. I also explained my company's plan for expansion and how some employees (including me) have been lined-up for impending management positions. I explained how my salary would triple when I eventually clinch the management opportunity.
GHOST UPDATES: 20th January 2023, 24th January 2023 and 1st February 2023.
Eligibility review started 20th Jan 2023.
Medical passed Feb 8th 2023.
PPR DROPPED FEB 8TH 2023.
DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED (2ND APPLICATION):
LOE (2 pages only) (Straight to the point)
Previous and current job offer letters.
Previous and current payslips and excerpts of bank statements showing some previous and current salaries shown on attached payslips.
Deed of transfer showing landed property sold for NGN15m to a client.
Business registration docs.
Business premises photos.
Family pics.
Wedding pics.
birth certs.
Our intl passports.
Study leave approval letter.
B.eng cert and transcript.
Updated LOA.
Police character cert.
Stamped copies of old passports.
Scanned copies of bank statements + MBS.
Stanbic IBTC Pension reference letter showing pension of over 10m.
Vehicle documents and pics worth N8m and N5.5m.
Pics of buildings and deed of transfer for landed property.

I do not want to bore you with too many stories. However, these were the main documents submitted during my application.

SP application nor be by muscle...Na baba God get power...if you like do all the packaging in the world, if it's not your turn, it's not your turn.

But don't forget, visa officers always want to see the following items:

1. Good home ties (e.g wife, children, siblings, parents, personal business, landed property, study leave approval letter etc.).

2. Sufficient and available funding (not fixed deposit or pension).

3. Show sufficient documentation for source of fund.

4. Good study plan. 1 or 2 page SOP/LOE. Explain the benefits of proposed program. Explain why paying the cost of proposed program would be a reasonable expense considering the high cost of intl studies. Show career progression. Get a good convincing story.

5. Straight fwd application.

6. Pay 1st year full tuition (it will boost your chances). Ensure the total amount of money required to complete the proposed program is readily available (plus some extra money).
Finally, I sincerely wish to thank everyone for their contributions on this thread.
Dear Uottawa Fall 2023 folks, pls lets connect.

All glory be to God! See you'all in Canada.

Congratulations. kindly check your DM sir

You shouldn’t have issues with home ties if you strategize your application. Business ownership, family members (parents and siblings), and proof of membership to clubs and organizations are sufficient ties. Furthermore, stress her role in your projects, support networks in Nigeria and Job prospects. I have had clients who had studied or worked in the UK and came to Canada for studies; they had no issues with home ties. Focus on her study plan and establish the program's relevance to her present job and the company's vision in Nigeria.
Go for a program above her present level of education. However, suppose the intended program is the same or below her credential. In that case, it should be an area of specialization and ensure that the program's purpose is well articulated on your SoP to avoid the issue of redundancy.

Thank you for the advice. God bless

Thank you for your response. Yes on work permit( Post graduate visa). I can decide to pay her salary from now till she print for POF if that will be sufficient to an extent. Because the POF will be in naira but may support with pounds account.

You and your wife don't seem like you both have strong economic ties to Nigeria, if your paychecks don't come from your Nigerian company.

So you need to fix that, show proof of economic ties to Nigeria.

Is it a reasonable expense to pursue another degree in Canada? You need to show how it helps your Nigerian company.

Is there family wealth in Nigeria, it helps to show that you both have something to fall back to. Like property or investments cowrywise or other investment trust funds in Nigeria.

Show evidence of cash that are immediately available for personal upkeep while in canada not just asset values.

From what i can understand from your advice. Its base on proof of funds. We have enough to show as POF. Do you mean her being a co-founder to my company isnt enough to proof home ties couple with family pictures.

Please advise on how to best proof home ties in my situation. I have a registered business in Nigeria and am now in the UK with my wife on a postgraduate visa. She is trying to get a student visa to Canada. I've already added her as a proprietor to the company I own in Nigeria, even though I don't get salary from the business and she doesn't get paid. However, I have multiple projects and an online presence to demonstrate the company's existence. She is currently working in the United Kingdom for more than a year now.

Hello to everyone. I'd appreciate it if someone could recommend a college that accepts first semester tuition payments around May/June. I have two offers from Conestoga and Flemings colleges, and both ask me to pay for the first semester between now and February for Fall intake 2023. I'm looking for college who can at least wait till May-July for first semester payment. I can pay a deposit of 1k-2kCAD to accept the offer, which used to be the standard.

This is definitely true and very valid for the most part.
There are places you do not want to live in the UK tho. Life was awesome when I was in Manchester, but had to move to Lancaster when I got a job up north (somewhere called Milnthorpe) in 2019. I had to talk to myself daily to remind myself there was a lot more to life. Then the lockdown came while I was still there (thankfully I had gotten married at this time) and it was still a mess. I was there for 9 months before I got a different job and had to move to Liverpool and things became better.
So moving to the UK is one thing, but there are UK cities that can rival whatever depression Canada has anyday, anytime; so it's worth looking out for.
As for making more money, I would think it's relative. Generally, I think living cost is a lot less in the UK (which is a major plus), but then in my field, the average salary in Canada (Toronto precisely) is way higher than most UK cities and probably at par with London (which is more expensive than Toronto).
I didn't have to change jobs on my move to Canada, and thankfully, my pay was adjusted (there are tools they use for these adjustments) and I honestly can save more at the end of every month. PS: this isn't peculiar to me.

So generally I think everybody's story is different and a lot of thoughts have to be given to what you do as a profession and where your bigger opportunities are.

But just like you, I found life in the UK easier. House search in Toronto was an extreme sport for me.

I will love to private chat you..Any means?
