Lagos, Nigeria (CNN Business)Africa's biggest economy has belatedly agreed to join a huge free trade agreement aimed at boosting manufacturing across the continent.
Nigeria will sign the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) at a summit of the African Union that starts in Niger on July 7, the Nigerian presidency announced on its official Twitter account late on Tuesday. "Let me state unequivocally that trade is important for us as a nation and to all nations. Economic progress is what makes the world go around. Our position is very simple, we support free trade as long as it is fair and conducted on an equitable basis," President Muhammadu Buhari said in the statement posted on Twitter.
The AfCFTA came into force in May after clearing a key procedural hurdle and being ratified by the parliaments of 24 countries. It aims to bring all 54 members of the African Union (AU) together in a single market of 1.2 billion people by removing trade barriers such as tariffs across Africa. The deal is expected to boost regional trade and allow companies to expand and enter new markets. Manufacturing industry currently accounts for only about 10% of the African Union's combined GDP of $3.4 trillion and the trade deal could make the sector more competitive and productive. West African countries choose new 'ECO' single trade currency West African countries choose new 'ECO' single trade currency South Africa and Cameroon are among 52 countries that have already signed up to AfCFTA. But Nigeria had refused to commit, saying it needed to consult with domestic stakeholders before making a decision.
Nigeria was initially worried that by exposing its manufacturers to greater competition, the deal could force some of them out of business and drive up unemployment. But after reviewing an impact assessment of the trade agreement in June, Buhari agreed to come on board. https://edition.cnn.com/2019/07/03/business/nigeria-signs-afcfta-intl/index.html

Politics › Re: Hegemony: What Igbo Can Learn From Yoruba - Reno Omokri by selemempe: 2:44am On Jul 01, 2019 |
I have read this. My thoughts are as follows:
1. Igbos were killed in the north b4 1960 so politics is not really the major divide btw us. Religion religion religion. It creates a value system. I can swear that saudi arabia and uk can not form a peaceful country.
2. Yes the igbos are proud people and we should learn to be more humble. Dont always call out other tribes, we igbos are not perfect too.
3. The average igboman really has nothing against a yoruba. We are neither afraid of them or envious of them and we dont hate them. Most igbos believe that a country made up of yoruba, igbos and ss will be by far the best in africa.
4.the north knows they are a problem and they know that the south knows this....so they try not to offend the south at once in order to ensure that the south dont unite against them. 1999 was to ensure yorubas dont unite with igbos against them...they did it for themselves not for nigeria. |

From the maps below, 2 things are clear:
1. There is enough green grass in Niger state
2. Niger state is bigger than se and ss combined....bigger than many european, asian, african and american countries.
3. Population of niger state is very small...meaning niger state can house ALL cattles in nigeria...
Who are we deceiving?

gwarotango: What they are asking for is tantamount to treason. Creating an autonomous federation within the Nigerian federation is a clear violation of the 1999 Constitution which clearly states how the federation is to be governed and the relationship between the center and the federating units. This is even way beyond Buhari's pay grade asking for shariah in 2001 is not treason? Its simple...let the 5 eastern states houses of assembly pass a bill allowing for the 1. establishment of a regional parliament made up of the 96 south eastern local govt representatives.... 2. establishment of a regional house of chiefs made up about 40 selected high ranking traditional rulers 3. establishment of the office of regional governor and deputy gov. The regional legislators will be given mandate to delibrate on selected concurrent items affecting the region and give a non-binding resolution to the house of assemblies to delibrate and adopt officially The regional gov who would be appointed by the 5 govs should be someone highly respected and his job will be to speak and be the visible leader of south east |

As we have seen most rich nations are of homogeneous ethnicity minority suppression would have happened in 1967 if biafra was achieved then...however if biafra is achieved nw it wont happen because of knowledge of history and dangers of domination. Believe me...gabon, congo and equitorial guinea are far ahead of most african countries nw and they have similar biafran geography and multi ethnicity |

oyatz: You don't seem to get it.
In Nigeria, Hausa-Fulani is being checkmated by Igbos and Yorubas while Igbo /Hausa are counterbalanced by Yorubas through getting the minorities to their sides.
In Biafra, Igbos alone will make up about 60% of the population and no single tribe can challenge them. If Biafra had succeed, by now Ekoi, Annang, Ikweres, Etche, Ijaw may have been assimilated into the emerging Igbo Nation. this argument is so weak...even u knw it. But pls tell me...how exactly will igbos dominate ss that is not going on nw? |

Ijaw areas fell 1st....calabar stood for some months and asaba fought fully till 1970. Poor student of history....many of them then even knew very little about this divional tribal politics we play today. Many of them saw zik as their leader. P.s not all igbos fought for biafra. Can we now say the villages of those prominent igbos didnt fight. U guys are revisionists sha |
Politics › Re: Had Biafra Succeeded Would It Have Been Successful by selemempe: 6:07pm On Jun 25, 2019 |
Yyeske: You are no longer ECOWAS citizens and can't move around freely. The Alien land act comes into effect and Biafrans in Nigeria with land and buildings lose it all. You might need a visa into Nigeria or any other ECOWAS country to visit because Nigeria could veto the entry of Biafra into ECOWAS. Biafra is surrounded by Nigeria and entry or exit into/from Biafra into Nigeria would be at Nigeria's discretion.
I can go on and on.
Britain is still having problems with the EU after brexit, you think it's that easy yen yen yen....biafra goes...nigeria will desolve fast...and why should we join ecowas...because a small percent of igbos have property in the defunct nigeria? Their business. We warned them. We would join our brothers in central africa where we belong. Stop talking jargon. If niger delta forms their own country we wont be surrounded by nigeria...we can negotiate with niger delta to use sea ports. Niger, rwanda and botswana are not dead cos they are landlocked |

80% of their Oil wealth is already in the hands of the Notherners. Even the restructuring they want is not possible because the North dont care about it. Yyeske: Whichever way you argue your point, have it at the back of your mind that Biafra would be surrounded by Nigeria and you need a deal with Nigeria to operate as a functional country.
Britain with it's free ports and wealth is still having problems with the EU if biafra goes...nigeria will not remain for long...many southern tribes would want to go too |

Officialgarri: To further buttress your point, I'll cite an example. I'm sure most of y'all have always heard that Nigeria gives (sells) electricity to Ghana, Togo..... While we suffer It's basically because of our geographical position. Our refusal to meet their needs will make them to dam the waters, hence, no water and electricity for us.
With Biafran's geographical location, they would be choked to a fault that they would beg to return. I can assure you that, with all sense of leniency and pathetic favours, they would remit at least 25% of their revenue back to Nigeria. I mean if Nigeria shows them mercy. If not.... look at biafra in 1967....how will they be choked? Sea they have....oil they have..rivers they have....gas they have....90% christian...igbo population 68% as at 1967....ojukwu would have remained in power as a dictator supported by igbos.....bro are u ok?
