Sports › Super Falcons Vs Germany (0 - 1) On Thursday 30th June @ 7:45pm by semid4lyfe(mod): 1:41pm On Jun 29, 2011
FIFA Women’s World Cup holders Germany meet African champions Nigeria in Frankfurt on Thursday evening, and although it is only the second match for both nations, there is already plenty at stake. The hosts are hoping to continue riding the euphoria currently sweeping the nation, but the Super Falcons urgently need a good result to make up for their poor start to the tournament. Last year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup provided an appetiser for Thursday evening’s clash, as the German juniors beat their Nigerian counterparts 2-0 in the final. The meeting between the seniors could be well decisive in determining the final Group A outcome.

The Stakes
The teams approach Thursday’s clash in contrasting moods. Heartened by their 2-1 opening day victory over Canada, and guaranteed the support of another huge and partisan home crowd, the Germans will be brimming with confidence as they pursue a second victory and top spot in the group.

Germany Women's Team

On the other hand, the Nigerians 0-1 defeat to France in their first match means they must go in search of points against the favourites for the trophy. That should make for an exciting game, as Uche Eucharia’s team cannot afford simply to defend and hope to come away with a draw.

Super Falcons of Nigeria

Brigitz Prinz and company beat the Nigerians 8-0 on a bitterly cold November evening in Leverkusen last year, on a night pretty much everything went right for the home team. Nevertheless, Silvia Neid and her players know they will face far more motivated opponents this week. The Super Falcons are a robust, dynamic team always capable of putting their opponents under pressure, whereas the Germans will be looking to improve on their display in the opening match, after Neid expressed dissatisfaction with her team’s passing in the meeting with Canada.

The Words
‘’I think we’ll see a different Germany against Nigeria. We’ll imposer our authority on the match from the start until the end, and that’ll give us a good chance of the three points,’’ – Germany defender Saskia Bartusiak

We certainly have a chance of making the World Cup Final, and maybe even winning it,’’ – Nigeria Keeper Precious Dede

So what do you think? Can the Super Falcons pull an upset and defeat the host, #2 ranked team & the two times defending champions OR will the team be packing it's bags and luggage after tomorrow's match? Drop your comments and vote in the poll. . . . .

I partially agree with her.

I don't know about her winning but she deserved better than she got cos of all the finalist, she answered her question best (with poise and confidence. . .unlike the others) unless it's about beauty only and not brains/intelligence.

The Miss Taraba that won stuttered through the reply to her question (a simple question that shouldn't have been a surprise to her and she should have expected. . .what does winning the MBGN mean to you?) and ended up not answering it, so I was surprised, shocked and flabbergasted when she was announced as the winner. (if the video dey youtube, make una go watch am, and una go get 2nd thoughts)

I gats say the winner Miss Taraba may be beautiful but she's very dull. By announcing Miss Taraba the winner, Silverbird is saying the questiöning of the finalist was only a charade and it had no bearing on the final outcome.

Dede1: I partially agree with your post. While I agreed both Loveth Ayila and Amarachi Okonkwo should have been included, I do not agree on Joy Jegege. Jegede was the captain of U-17 women team and the weakest link on the team’s defense.
NO! You are wrong and I disagree. Joy Jegede was the captain of the U-20 team that won silver at the Germany 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. She paired Osinachi Ohale (who paired Onome Ebi in AWC 2010 and in yesterday's game) in  central defence and was the better of the two in my opinion. You're probably mixing up the Trinidad & Tobago U-17 Women's Championship with the U-20.. Faith Ikidi used to be a very good defender (our best defender) in 2007/2008 (World cup/Olympics. . .and was outstanding in marking out USA's Abby Wambach then) but she's clearly past it and on current form, I think Joy Jegede is better.

Dede1: By the way, Uchechi Sunday is Esther Sunday. Sheep can not beget a tiger.
LOL. . .is this an informed opinion or you're making that assumption cos of the surname and you think she's using a different ''first'' name in this competition?. . .just like how Osaze Odemwingie is known as Peter Odemwingie in the EPL? grin grin

I hate to burst your bubble, but again you are wrong! UCHECHI SUNDAY IS NOT ESTHER SUNDAY. I  know it seems very unlikely that two different female footballers in a team would have the same surname but believe me, they're different people.

I have the official squad list in PDF format as released by FIFA (downloaded from FIFA.com and I'm looking at it now) of all the participating countries detailing all their info & statistics and I've checked it out. . .and done some research too.

Uchechi Sunday is an Igbo girl and her full name is Uchechi LOPEZ Sunday. She 16yrs+ (09/09/94), stands at 1.82m (should be about 6ft) tall and she plays for FC Neunkirch in Switzerland and was uncapped for the Falcons until yesterday WHILE Esther Sunday is an Efik or Ibibio girl. Her full name is Esther UKPONG Sunday, of average height and she plays for Sunshine Queens of Akure. She played at the AWC 2010 and also in the Olympics & All Africa Games qualifiers this year. Her caps for the Falcons should be at least 10 by now or just a little less. Esther Sunday was part of the 30 players that was in the Austria training camp but she didn't make the final squad.

Dede1: I do not think Nigerian girls have the same physical preparation and regimentation available to European and USA teams.
Very True! Nigerians teams hardly incorporate the off-field training regimes into their training practice. The typical Nigerian football training starts and ends on the pitch. . . .E nor dey pass light warm-up with some physical exercises, some laps of jogging round the pitch and then playing a training match. I doubt they put in much work off the pitch i.e gym, chilled water pool etc for physical conditioning and tuning out exercises.
Sports › Re: Super Falcons Vs France (0 - 1) On Sunday 26th June @ 2pm by semid4lyfe(mod): 11:19pm On Jun 26, 2011
It's now obvious coach Uche Eucharia didn't select the best players for this tournament. Clearly, she erred in her squad selection. I'm still not convinced Amenze Aighewi (3 caps), Uchechi Sunday (uncapped until today), Faith Ikidi &  Rebecca Kalu deserve to be in this team ahead of Loveth Ayila, Esther Sunday, Amarachi Okonkwo, Joy Jegede & Ngozi Okobi. Why are Nigerian coaches so stuck on old players and afraid to give new (younger) players a chance. WHY?

The coach also botched her starting eleven today. . .playing a clearly heavy, slow and unfit Faith Ikidi at right back ahead of a fitter and more athletic Josephine Chukwunonye. I was happy she realized her mistake and removed Faith Ikidi and brought in Josephine Chukwunonye early in the first half.

Desire (Ugochi) Oparonozie despite missing our best chance of the game shouldn't have been removed cos her strength & pace gave the France defence problems. She was difficult to shake off the ball, kept drifting into wide positions and getting us more into play. Her substitution made the France defenders more settled and gave them the confidence to play more upfield. Instead, Ebere Orji should have been removed for Sarah  Micheal.

The Referee denied us a clear penalty in the second half but shyte happens all the time in football so I won't begrudge her for that.

All in all, I think it wasn't as bad a performance as most peeps here are making it out to be. Clearly, most know little about this France team, the players and their pedigree. *Google FCF Lyon and check out videos of the 2011 UEFA Women's Champions League Competition on youtube*

Personally, I think this France team is better than Germany and I see them topping the group.

@ lacidi & baro
Thanks for the eye witness reports. It's this kinda analytic posts I wanna read and that leads me to the question. . ,what does Eguavoen see in that Odion Ighalo? The guy has never been good, is a wastepipe and a sorry excuse for a striker.

Winning 3-1 (& coming from a goal down) against Ghana @ any level is a very good result although I would have preferred a 2-0. The second leg no go easy at all cos the Ghanaians have their back against the wall and they'd do anything to win.

Me thinks the Super Eagles could do with some of the players of the U-23. For example Nosa Igiebor, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Kingsley Udoh, Edet Ibok, Obiora Nwankwo

Finally, how did Nosa Igiebor celebrate his goal? grin

Congrats to the boys.!

MeGaStReEt: I dont trust Precious Dede
lekyar: Seconded, she's too jittery when put under pressure.
Are you guys psychic or what cos both of you just spoke my mind. The FIFA Technical committee mentioned her as the weakest link in the Nigerian team @ the last world cup and Olympics and I'm surprised she's still the first choice goalie. How I wish we could borrow USA's Hope Solo or the Equatorial Guinea goalie cos both are very good grin

Someone needs to tell Precious Dede an aerial ball been contested with her should be punched away and not caught. It was her mistake of trying to catch a ball over an Equatorial Guinea player's head in the AWC final that led to EG's first goal. I hope she's learned from her mistake and the goalie trainer has drilled this into her. Apart from the ''aerial ball'' problem, I think she can dive, parry and her reflexes are okay.

honeric01: But do we have a formidable replacement?
I think the second choice goalie, Tochukwu Oluehi is better than Precious Dede but I doubt Coach Uche Eucharia has the balls to bench her captain

Dis Guy:
Yes but he is not being 'respected', can you imagine they called him up just to play 2 games during the championship in South Africa, after releasing him to his club in Norway they wanted him to fly back after a crucial match all the way to SA

I don't think they will do that to any other player
Which kain talk be dis sef? It seems people are forgetting Ahmed Musa was first a Flying Eagles player before becoming a Super Eagles player. The coaches are entitled to call him up and he can decline if he wants to. . .

Joel Obi was also in a position to play for the three teams but he put his foot down and said he'd play for only the Super Eagles.

If anything, blame Ahmed Musa for being overzealous and not being able to take a stand. He could easily have refused to be at the AYC but he agreed with the precarious arrangement of the coach & the NFF.

I listened to his interview after the Tanzania game and he said he doesn't have any problem playing for the 3 teams

The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off on Sunday 26th June with a Group A match that sees African Champions Nigeria play emerging European powerhouse France at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena in Sinsheim, Germany.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been a main stay in the Women’s game and are known for a powerful style predicated on endurance. The majority of these players play their club soccer in Scandinavia, more specifically in Sweden where the players have learned the technical side of the game to a great degree.

Super Falcons of Nigeria

Coach Uche Eucharia has done wonders for the African side since after being appointed and is well respected. In fact, she was the only female coach at the most recent African Championships in which her team came out tops.

The key player for the team is Perpetua Nkwocha; even at 35 years old she is still one of the more clinical forwards in the Women’s game. She is also well decorated, winning 4 Women’s African Soccer Championships and 3 African Women’s Player of the Year awards; she is the clear leader of what is mostly a youthful side. Other important players for the Nigerian team are Rita Chikwelu, Glory Iroka and Desire Oparanozie.

As for France, this is a team that is quickly on the rise and has made their first World Cup appearance since 2003 where they exited in the First Round. In that year they were in a tough group with Norway, South Korea and Brazil and this time around it’s a similar story with Germany, Canada and Nigeria.

Le Bleues Feminine

The aspect of this team that gives them an advantage is familiarity, as they are all ply their trade in the French League, this is one of the strongest leagues in Women’s soccer and most of the players reside with either Lyon or Paris Saint- Germain which are two of the strongest club teams in Europe.

Coach Bruno Bini is one of the best coaches in the Women’s game, and knows all of these players very well being within the French Female set up since 1993 with the U16 side. The key players for Les Bleus are Camille Abily and Eugénie Le Sommer.  Abily has experience in the U.S playing with FC Gold Pride of the WPS while Le Sommer is a rising talent on the French frontline
MATCH

Kick-off is 2pm Nigerian time and match will be on on SuperSport. Not sure if it'd be on local TV sha. So what's your prediction? Drop your comments and vote in the poll. . . . . . . . . . .

Hmmm. . .didn't want to post this match thread after all, it's ''just'' an All Africa Games Qualifier and there's no guarantee the match will be on TV but then again, it's NIGERIA Vs GHANA and any football match between Nigeria and Ghana is sure to be a ''cracker''. . .even if na new-born babies dey play grin

PREVIEW
The ante of rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana will be raised this Saturday as the Nigerian U-23 team, the Dream Team V take on their Ghanaian counterparts in the first leg of the final round of the 2011 All-Africa Games Qualifier at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin, Edo State.

Fresh from their triumph over Tanzania in the London 2012 Olympic qualifiers, the Austin Eguavoen-led Dream team V will be going into this match with confidence at an all time high whereas the Ghanaians will be looking to making amends following their ouster from the London 2012 Olympic Games Qualifier by Sudan.

Since their ouster from the Olympic qualifiers, there has been changes at the helms of the Ghanaian U-23 team with Kwesi Appiah, deputy coach of senior team (Black Stars) replacing David Duncan. Appiah has named a strong squad for the encounter with players such as Jordan Ayew, Dominic Adiyiah, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, Jonathan Mensah, Samuel Inkoom, Daniel Addo, Mubarak Wakaso, Daniel Opare, Rabiu Mohammed, Gladson Awako, Masahudu Alhassan, Boakye Yiadom, Afriyie Acquah amongst others.

On the other hand, gaffer of the Nigerian team, Austin Eguavoen has maintained the same side that beat Tanzania. That team had the likes of Ahmed Musa, Ekhigo Ehiosun, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Ganiyu Oseni, Obiora Nwankwo, Edet Ibok, Josiah Maduabuchi, Dele Ajiboye, Kingsley Udoh, Terna Suswan, Energy Oterpa, Sonne Aluko etc. His side has also been strengthened by the return of Odion Ighalo and Nosa Igiebor who could not play the Tanzania game last week due to club commitments.

The U-23 teams of Ghana and Nigeria met in 2007 in the final qualifying rounds of the 2007 All Africa Games and Beijing 2008 Olympics and then, the Ghanaians picked the All Africa Games ticket by playing 1-1 in Abuja and 0-0 in Accra while the Dream Team IV pipped them 3-2 in Abuja and played a 0-0 draw in Accra to qualify for the Olympics.

Kick-off should be 4pm Nigerian time and it's sure to be a thriller. So what's your prediction for this match? A Win, Draw or a Loss? Drop your comments and vote in the poll. . . . . . . .

@poster I am sure you are one of them abi? Talk true make devil shame.

But I hope she will not deputise for Rita Chikwelu who is usually the preferred choice for the central mid-fielder position.
She should count herself lucky to have made the squad in the first place cos there are players who are better than her (in her position) that didn't. e.g Amarachi Okonkwo, Ngozi Okobi, Loveth Ayila, Esther Sunday etc and make no mistake about it, Rita Chikwelu is better than Rebecca Kalu and will always start ahead of her. Comparing both of them is like comparing C.Ronaldo and Nani.

Sports › Re: Eucharia Names 21 Falcons For World Cup ( 18 Out Of 21 Are Igbos) by semid4lyfe(mod): 2:06am On Jun 16, 2011
@ OP
The Super Falcons have always been dominated by Igbos even when James Peter (South-South), Ismaila Mabo (a Notherner), Nterio Effiom (from either Cross Rivers or Akwa-Ibom state), Sam Okpodu (South-South), Jossy Lad (Yoruba I suppose?) were in the saddle. Hell, even the girls taken to the first Women's world cup in '91 by Bonfrere Jo were mostly Igbos.

I suggest you to take a stroll to the National Stadium- Surulere, Abete field- Iwaya, Police College- Ikeja, Gbagada Roundabout etc. . .all in Lagos (I never mention playing fields in the South-East & South-South o) or any football training ground/field in Nigeria where you reside on a Saturday to see the "aspiring" female footballers who come out to train & play and then come back and tell me how many non-Igbos and non-Niger Deltans you see. Only then will you begin to understand why the Igbo's dominate our Female National teams (Flamingoes- U-17 , Falconets- U-20 & the Super Falcons) and will continue to dominate for a long time to come.

For example, the USA 99 Super Falcons squad that got to the quater-finals which was handled by Ismailo Mabo (a Notherner) had a starting-11 of Ann Chiejine, Ebere Okpara, Prisca Emeafu, Kikelomo Ajayi, Yinka Kudaisi, Florence Omagbemi, Nkiru Okosieme, Patience Avre, Rita Nwadike, Mercy Akide and one other player I can't recall now. The full squad was like 80-90% Igbo and this was selected by a Notherner o.

Simply put. . .at least 70% of the girls actively playing soccer in Nigeria are Igbos and it stands to reason they'd dominate the National female football landscape. Moreover, these selected players are the best. . .although I feel Loveth Ayila deserved to be in this squad ahead of Francesca Ordega afterall she and not Ordega was our best player at the T&T 2010 U-17 Women's World cup.

Me thinks Coach Eucharia should be commended for having the balls to drop established but expired players like Effionwan Ekpo, Lilian Cole, Cynthia Uwak, Chi-Chi Igbo etc and selecting a relatively young squad (on paper). . .afterall na wetin the Super Eagles handlers no fit do with some kain players (Kanu, Aiyegbeni etc) she do so grin

I'm particularly happy with the inclusion of Faith Ikidi and Sarah Michael in defence and attack respectively. Both are sheer class!

Sagamite: I never had the time to say it on NL even though I saw a few posts of people complaining that Argentina were not bringing Messi, Tevez and co, but I was saying it to friends in real life:

"That is no problem, smack their second team 6-0 and see how quickly they will ask for a rematch the next year. That is the only thing we can do, since they are the star team and we are the beggars."

Now that we have smacked them 4-0 (their goal was insignificant), they are now keen for a rematch. I just never envisage it will be so quickly.

But, God, it is sad that we have reetards running our football. I can't believe they accepted this invite. What utter cretins!

We should not accept any invite that requires us to play 2 days after an important game. They are highly likely to win our tired players and their reputation salvaged.

We should not take any invite that gives us less than 1 week to prepare, so that we have a chance of winning. If we win them again in Round 2, then other big nations will start calling us, instead of us calling them.

Utter cretins in NFF are going to fck our potential revenue up because once Argentina wins no one will listen to excuses. I hate mooorons!
Sagamite, I agree with you jare. Argentina has all the advantages going into this re-match being that they'll be in South-East Asia long before the match and will infact be playing Venezuela 4 days before us in Kolkata, India and wouldn't have to travel far to get to Bangladesh. . . and they have 4 days of rest.

I still don't get how the NFF expects to meet up with the tight schedule being that we'll be playing in Madagascar on September 4 (Sunday) and then play Argentina on September 6 (Tuesday). It's almost impossible to me. Here is my post on the previous page. . . .

Lol. . .as if I knew this was gonna happen and I also think this match would have been better played in Europe since majority of the players that will be fielded by both teams are Europe-based.

My only worry is the timing. Just 2 days after our match with Madagascar is a very tight schedule and that means the team must leave for Dhaka, Bangledesh immediately after the match on a chartered plane to be able to arrive there at least a day to the match keeping in mind that Asia is very far off from Africa.
