Globacom goes to Court over NPL's MTN Sponsorship Deal

Nigeria's Telecommunications Giants, Globacom has headed to court to challenge the title rights of the Nigeria Premier League handed to its rival, MTN few days ago after a bid process in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Apparently miffed by the fact that the team of lawyers brought together to thrash out the bid process by the national sports commission cleared the premier league to ride on with the deal with MTN, Globacom has opted to pursue its claim from a legal standpoint. Globacom filed a suit with No.FHC/L/CS/1565/10 at a Federal High Court in Lagos through its lawyer, Professor Abiodun Adesanya, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

In the suit, Globacom is seeking that the court annuls the four-year deal of the title rights awarded to MTN on the grounds that it never took part from the stage of expression to the last stage of the bid process. The suit also claimed that only two companies – Globacom and Total Promotions Limited participated in the bid process for the NPL title sponsorship.

Globacom also argued that it offered 3 billion naira in the bid process as against between 1.6 billion naira and 2 billion naira being reported.

It is understood that NPL is listed as defendant in the suit while the trio of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the NSC, also referred as the sports ministry and MTN has been joined as co-defendants.

The case will come up for hearing at the federal high court in Lagos on December 31, 2010.

MTN was named as the new title sponsor of the Premier League in Nigeria following its 2.6 billion naira bid.

Globacom was the immediate past title sponsor of the NPL until it pulled out of the deal in December 2009 citing unfavourable circumstances.

But the Premier League has claimed that the Nigerian telecommunications outfit still owes it around N935 million for the last year of a four-year deal that ran out last season.

Obama Invitational Tournament; Siasia Invites 30 Home-Based Eagles

SOURCE

Coach Samson Siasia will lead a largely home-based Super Eagles to an invitational tournament in the United States of America, taking place from February 12 - 20, 2011. Organizers of the United States president’s day celebration soccer invitational tournament, the Green Soccer Bowl, have confirmed Nigeria as one of the eight teams that will take part in the tournament.

According to information made available to SuperSport.com by the NFF chief media officer, Ademola Olajire, the competition is in honour of United States president Barack Obama and it will take place at the Cotton Bowl, Dallas, Texas venue of Nigeria’s first ever Fifa World Cup finals match, which ended in a 3-0 whitewash of Bulgaria in June 1994.

Already, draws for the tournament have been made with the Super Eagles having to contend with Iraq, Poland and Malaysia in Group A, while Egypt, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kenya and Bahrain will play in Group B.

Ahead of this event, coach Siasia, who is presently spending the yuletide holidays with his family in the United States of America, will return to Nigeria early January and to start camping programme for his home-based squad on January 10.

Three goalkeepers, eight defenders, seven midfielders and 12 strikers have been invited to the camp in Abuja.

Midfielders: Bartholomew Ibenegbu, Julius Ubido (Heartland FC), Rabiu Ali (Kano Pillars), ThankGod Amaefule (Sharks FC), Daniel Mende, Cletus Itodo (Sunshine Stars), Uche Kalu (Enyimba).

Hmm. . .christmas is generally a time when people express false emotions.

A neighbour who has never greeted you before will do so and even your worst enemy will wish you a merry xmas.

Personally, I don't attach much importance to the season as I just see it as a sort of holiday period.

Emmyk: Why must call come in the moment they're wif the generator ?
Sounds like a fairy tale
True. . . coincidental and highly unlikely but a call could come in when he's tryna switch on the gen. I gats add though, that I switch on my Gen with my Nokia 1200 torchlight almost everyday and a call has never come in when I with the Generator.

Kemisugar: got home after work and wanted to switch on the generating set with the torchlight on his phone when the phone
Lots of Nigerians do this everyday. . . return from work at night, comot the N1000/N500 fuel wey dem buy from booth of their car, remove their office outfit and the next thing na to fuel the generator, add oil and begin dey pull  or dey battle with keyswitch as the case may be. . .na the Naija way, lol grin

Hmm. . . don't know if it's true but I heard the new sports Minister, Taoheed Adedoja is a Professor of P.H.E with specialization in Sports Administration so is he not a square peg in a square hole?

The question we should ask is why he wasn't made the sports minister in the 1st place when he had the requisite qualification and was better suited to the position than Issa Biu?
