otokx: Front page things, the question is how did quarantine team miss the girl? Government should not play politics with our lives. How many people have been in contact with this girl? They should keep primary and secondary schools closed till further notice.
Good question.

We were told they were seriously monitoring all the contacts of all victims. This lady must have come home from school if she's a student. How did she slip through the monitors?

And if she's not a student then she should have been under strict monitoring at Portharcout.

The boyfriend should be quarantined too amongst others.

Phemorinho: My younger brother is currently in OAUTH,he said the girl is there With them.its confirmed jare.
...and all the girl's friends are now in trouble. From Stigmatisation, authorities looking for links, and Ebola itself.

sisiafrika: The scene is scary. The nurses seem scared and shouting at the WHO reps fumigating. I guess its positive cos they were fumigating the path the suspect took..
I'm not sure the health center has enough facilities to take care of something like that. I would have preferred the isolation center be at a location not easily accessible on campus. Definitely not in the health center.

Or they take her to OAU TH.

perez019: I just got a call from a Dr friend who works there and he authoritatively told me the result came out positive. A very sad news to the OAU community
Hmmm. Sad news. Just heard from an insider too. Said the patient is presently in an isolation room.

Too bad for those who only just resumed.

Don't know if this should even be recommended for front page. Issues like these shouldn't be shouted on roof tops to avoid unreasonable panic.
Education › Re: Patient Suspected With Ebola Being Investigated In OAU Ile Ife by semitunde: 5:26pm On Sep 09, 2014
For the huge population on that campus, this had better come out negative.

The patient should have been transferred out of the school premises to a safe in a secluded area. Oau has places like that. This shouldn't be allowed to become a big issue.

Kachisbarbie: It's not that bad now tho...it's actually the best hospital especially for 'birthing' in Abia state aside FMC-Umuahia.

Every government hospital has a side like this, even our famous LUTH...
It has good parts that I know of.
Slow down on the "every".
Culture › Re: Do African Americans Have A Culture? by semitunde:
If there is an African American culture, its an admixture of rap, hip hop, " adapted white Christian culture", and cuss words.

I'm being non-sentimental here.
Culture › Re: Do African Americans Have A Culture? by semitunde: 12:45pm On Sep 09, 2014
Afam4eva: You obviously don't know what culture is. Culture evolves and hip hop and it's accompaning lifestyle has come to be part of African-American culture.
Well to me, culture encompasses a lot of things including music (for a purpose e.g. festivals), greetings, behaviours, food ( especially how its eaten). To mention hip hop and rap as examples of them having culture is akin to saying Ghanaians have culture because the they popularised highlife and hip life.

But I'm sure I don't know what culture is all about.
Culture › Re: Do African Americans Have A Culture? by semitunde: 12:39pm On Sep 09, 2014
theSlayer: well, I just want you to know that your nigerian/african culture is inferior compared to american culture .
for a start : cattles are raised on ranches .
mechanized agriculture is american invention and culture .
no one gives a fvck about your kings and lords. we invented president .the entire world is having that
I don't think any culture is superior to another. Its just a group of people's values.Others may see differently, it doesn't necessarily reduce such values in the original owners' eyes.

For instance, a man, fully prostrating in front of an elder may be seen as untidy and a waste of energy by a stranger to the custom, but to a knowing elder, he/she receives such greetings with pride and happiness.

Meanwhile, I agree that the presidential system of governance may have been popularised in the US ( not sure if they started it); but giving us pictures of farmlands and farming is not a good way to put such points across. There are farmers everywhere.
Culture › Re: Do African Americans Have A Culture? by semitunde: 12:29pm On Sep 09, 2014
Afam4eva: Hip Hop and Rap is African American culture. Ebonics is African American culture. Jumping the broom is African American culture. They surely have a culture.
I'm bending my mind to see how rap and hiphop are part of AA's culture. What is culture in your view? Is highlife culture?

Gbawe: There is no essence to this thread. It is just Aljharem 'doing his thing' when he has forgotten to take his meds. Those of us who know him well here are aware of his antecedent. He is not someone to be taken seriously and is exactly 100% like Femi Fani-Kayode. Aljharem has always been known for his deceit, lies and 'all things to all men' sycophancy. The post below is from 2011. Shocking some people never ever change or mellow with age. Tomorrow, he will be here 'apologising' to APC Nairalanders. He does this all the time and it is those who do not know him who will take him seriously.

Education › Re: Best Nigerian Universities For Studying Medicine by semitunde: 12:04am On Sep 05, 2014
Legit: You must be or related to one of those "so Called" Nigerian doctors. Please disprove my point, if you want to be honest. Go and have open heart surgery done with Nigerian "doctor" they are over rated.
...and what is your solution? We should all go abroad for all our medical, including emergency solutions?

You forget the fact that some of the doctors you malign here are the same ones that attend to you abroad.

You also seem to not notice that the treatment of people abroad, including our politicians, is a good reason why our medicals are not up to the required standard. But heck, you don't blame the govt right? They gotta do what they gotta do!

If the people who go abroad challenge the govt, and the govt itself is not encouraged by people like you; then there's hope for a better Nigeria.

People like you just sit on your couch and want everything to fall in place for you. Your mind blocks out the "how".

I'm sure if transportation increases, your response will be "pray that you'd be able to afford it". Your mind blocks out the multiplier effects it will have on inflation!

So bro, your logic is wrong. You're putting your cart before the horse. The govt that can afford to juncket abroad in a sneeze, instead of getting treatment here, shouldn't be encouraged but chided for not providing such an enabling environment here. There's more to life than being simple minded.

I'm an ENGR, not a doc.

Had a problem like this once. The Mech used same carb cleaner but there was only a little difference, till he later found that one of the injector nozzles was faulty.

I buy injector cleaners occasionally to avoid this.

Legit: NONE of them is good enough for me or anyone. Medical training in Nigeria is a joke. These "so Called" doctors are noting but a medical assistant as they are not exposed to the latest equiptment or innovation. I will never be treated by Nigerian doctors in Nigeria, if I can help it, and will put in my will. My relative had a stroke in nigeria, the dumb Nigerian "so called" doctors could not diagnose it, im not a doctor, and I know the sign of stroke.

My friend was sick in Nigeria, was rushed to an expensive hospital, the doctor gave her an injection, and paralised the poor woman. It is not the fault of the student, they only learned with the little they have. This is why Nigeria medical degree is NOT recognise in most western countries. The hostels is not condusive to learning, with dirty full everywhere. Nigerian education na yeye. Why are all the rich getting out of the country for treatment, even the President. I don't blame them, I have zero respect for these Nigerian Doctor, they're not qualify, the standard is too low. I will not trust my live to the "so Called" nigerian doctors. It is rubbish. This is the truth.
Your argument isn't logical. But mostly you need to calm down.

SeaGold: Read the last words of Major Nzeogwu. In the heat of the coup, Nzeogwu packed all the young northern military officers and their politicians into a plane and radioed Ojukwu the commander of the Brigade in Kaduna with specific instruction to bomb the plane upon it arrival in Kaduna. On it arrival, Ojukwu rather welcomed them calling them his brothers that he will never harm them. It was only when they very group of northern officers turn against him that he went to war. And today the same crop of politicians and military men are the one holding Nigeria hostage.

Nnamdi Azikiwe has been the proponent of ONE Nigeria. His Ngeru lifestyle never allowed him to pursue the Biafran Agenda. Even when the likes of Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello was pursing religional autonomy, he was BUSY with his nationalist movement. He was IBO by Birth but an Hausa man at heart. Yet inspite of his struggles to make the north parasite to the budding south they eventually cheated on him in all front.

*any other one?grin
I'll need to start telling my son lots of stories too. I know, one day, he'll be on nairaland.

Well, here in Nigeria, you can actually still use this same sentence. You only need to replace Brits with Yoruba and replace Yoruba with any other tribe in Nigeria.

I understand what you're saying, but what I'm saying is also a sad truth.

Op. History has shown again and again that more often than not, people follow anyone with persuasive words that seek to elevate their sense of self.

Many times the people they follow blindly are wrong and even questionable. But instead, the more intelligent assessors of situations are the ones questioned.

Man's pursuit of happiness and personal dignity has many foolish lows.

Hey, don't become unduly self important. This your comment whiffs of personal pride in what you've not even done yet.

If you really want reconciliation, its not by being vainglorious. Instead of telling us about how you'd make everyone comfortable with drinks and co, you should ask for suggestions about how the meetings will be.

If you really want reconciliation, then this shouldn't be about you. You're on that lane if you don't realise it yet.
