BusinessRe: Adewunmi The Blackmailer by semitunde: 10:06am On May 19, 2016
This is just a case of mistrust, impatience and misunderstanding gone wrong. Both of them are right and wrong.

The op didn't initially have proof enough to convince the accused that she had the goods she was selling; especially since she expects payment before delivery. Sending empty bottles with strange hands can raise anyone's suspicion. she can be deemed a scammer by the accused by the accused and truly would have wanted to smartly negate that by coming online first.

However, coming online first only gives the op a head start, what is nailing the accused is the text message he sent to the op. From the text msg ( if true), the accused isn't a scammer but a blackmailer , they are different. He wanted to (as a sharp guy, as evidenced by his antecedents) get money from the op in exchange for not coming online with a scammer story he has discovered. He may truly feel he has found another online scammer, but asking for money shifts the blame on his head and it will.be difficult to extricate himself from that one.

I bumped into this thread from the start and what I felt was the issue then is what I still.maintain, and it's what I've stated here.

No wonder there's been data collection by some government officials with officials of LASTMA stopping me and other road users since Monday and asking me where I am coming from, where I am heading to and where is my office /residence located. Then they make their entry and politely say "thank you and have a nice day sir"
Good observation.

Its called traffic studies. And its used for both vehicular movement and pedestrian movement. It is used to determine, traffic volume, traffic concentration, traffic bottlenecks, and most importantly, turning movement of vehicles.

Very good data as input in the decision whether to widen a road or not; to have a rpund about or fly over; to have a constant traffic light or a period variable traffic light etc.
Unfortunately, a lot of work is not put into it in Nigeria.

Is your problem centred around inability to comprehend simple fact or sheer cynicism? How many times would I say the govt should eschew divisiveness? Is it a crime if the warring factions are brought to round table for the sake of peace in the labour force? I am tired of you.
Bro, you are being quite emotional about this instead of being rational.

If a group of people coming against me are split and fighting amongst themselves, it will be in my enlightened self interest to foster that polarity to advance myself. You might say its not fair (emotional) but seriously life (and those who take major decisions in it) ain't fair. This strategy is used in military circles as it is used in the religious ones.

The onus still.lies on NLC to either do away with their infighting and forge a common front, or whatever faction that deems itself dominant should show it via the peoples support. But therein lies the truth, that they don't ( either factions) have the people's support generally.

If Nigerians actually wanted a strike NLC will only be playing catch up on the activities. Occupy Nigeria 2012 wasn't started by NLC, they joined later and even took advantage of the situation to get money for themselves and undermine the process.

A huge percentage of Nigerians are not under NLC and the only reason why those ones supported NLC before was because they felt NLC was fighting for them; events have proved the selfish nature of many NLC reps. Trust in them has waned and that's the truth. Many of them are not workers anymore, they are politicians.

They were never human rights activists to start with. They did their bit just like any other human being with the progress of the nation at heart. The only difference is that they have more influence, reach and probably more determination to right wrongs than any of us.

You can be that person too, start today. I won't join you though, cos I don't believe in protesting this time. I understand the situation and it's different from Jonathan's time when subsidy monies were shared like gala amongst our fantastically corrupt politicians.

The reason for the protest at that time was not only for removal of the subsidy, it was mostly that we didn't trust what they would use the money for. In essence, we didn't trust the govt /jonathan to take care of the masses over his own corrupt team. Recent events have been proving us right.

Besides, the NLC and TUC at that time that met the govt, most likely were bribed
They came out of the meeting with govt singing another tune. I won't entrust them.with another protest again, maybe in 15yrs time though.

abdulwastecx:
The problem is this type of foundation is not a raft foundation. It is more like beam on grade foundation but we always confused it with raft in this part of the world. The construction techniques and reinforcement pattern of this type foundation is quit different.

All raft foundation must have the beam and slab monolithically cast together and the slab is designed to have contact with the soil with reasonable bearing capacity to support the building , hence excavation must be done to a suitable soil specify by soil investigation. These raft may be only slab (an inverted flat slab) or with beams to reduce punching shear of columns (up stand or down stand beams). That is the major reason why all raft foundation comes with basement.

The type of foundation use for this structure is beam on grade foundation. The settlement problem results from the uniform settlement of expansive clay and not from bearing capacity failure. If water can be avoided along the foundation area then the building will stand
Nice. Been a while I discussed construction/structural technicalities. Also, its been a while I made the post you responded to and can't remember the whole story but let's discuss based on your reply.

I don't understand the bolded.

I also don't get what you mean by "beam on grade foundation". I may be wrong but I'm not sure there's anything like beam on grade foundation. There's "grade beam" which is a component of mostly deep foundations like pile foundation.

A grade beam doesn't transmit loads directly to the ground. It transmits to the pile caps or piers as the case my be. It should withstand bending moment and hence the beam has some height. Sometimes as high as a raft beam. So unless the client has some piles there, those may not be grade beams.

I understand that in construction nothing is cast in stone and you can modify solutions to fit problems. But the solutions have to be cost effective. A grade beam in this case may not be cost effective (if it is at all effective).

Cancel "grade foundation", what kind of foundation do you again think is there?

The closest to what you might be talking about in terms of withstanding load pressures and load bearing walls is the use of is "spread footing". A shallow foundation system like the op should use a spread footing while a deep foundation should use a grade beam.

The height of the beam (as I can remember, I've not checked) looked more like for a raft like foundation. A spread footing would have sufficed. More cost effective if anything else.

As for the presence of water, this can affect the bearing capacity of the soil depending on the type that is there. If the channel can be diverted fine, since the building had already been constructed.

What do you say?

PropertiesRe: 5 Simple Ways To Reduce The Cost Of Your Building Project by semitunde: 8:03am On May 12, 2016
Cribpark:
Materials Quality and Quantity
Endeavour to purchase construction materials like cement, sand, granite, wood and reinforcement bars yourself as most many Nigerian contractors tend to add excess mark-up. Once you get the quote from the Quantity Surveyor do your findings on where you can get the products.

If you find going to your building site overwhelming, you can check sites like cribpark.com where they give the prices of these items for each unique location. Discuss with the contractor so you will know when the items would be required, and in which sequence they should be delivered. Your contractor will help you plan your materials inventory properly as all materials cannot be supplied at the same time due to space constraints and security challenges

If you are delegating the materials purchase to suppliers, don’t go just go on a whim with either the first estimate or the lowest estimate. Make informed decisions to get the best quality and required quantity of materials your building needs.
Purchasing of construction materials by clients while seen as a good move isn't always a rosy affair.

The reason why some contractors may add a little markup (apart from the greedy or inexperienced ones) is to take care of risks. For instance, a short, heavy rainfall(with sunshine) after you just painted. The contractor will have to pay for the repainting labour but thankfully the material will be sources from the client. If local touts decide to destroy some things to press home their points. The client will have to bear the risk of increase in costs in that situation. A contractor might decide to give a tout some materials to bring in to reduce their disturbance, he may not be able to do that if the client supplies.

There are also construction changes that will demand change in qty of materials. Just saying that its not always the devil's idea to let the contractor handle procurements.

Risk is a very important factor in construction (as in other project). In fact, its the reason why Nigerian contracts are higher than for most other places.

HealthRe: GENOTYPE: A Determinate Factor In Marriage by semitunde: 10:25pm On May 01, 2016
jaymichael:
Yes, that too is very important. It is called RHESUS INCOMPATIBILITY DISEASE. it occurs when the father's rhesus factor is different from that of the mother, (say the father's blood group is O+ and the mother's is O-) during pregnancy there is a high chance that the baby will inherit the O+ blood group of the father. When this happens, The Mother's negative rhesus will prompt her immune system to produce antibodies to attack the blood of the baby bearing positive rhesus. This causes serious problems for the child and in a severe case, it can lead to the death of the foetus in the womb. This is because there is a possibility of the mother's blood passing to the child in the womb but with a greater degree of certainty during childbirth. The severity of the attack on the baby increases with each childbirth.
The injection rhogam prevents the mother's body from producing antibodies to attack the baby in the womb when there is rhesus incompatibility.
In addition to all tests like genotype, hiv/aids etc it is important to know your blood group and rhesus factor before marriage in other to plan for future eventuality.
I never knew all about this until it happened to a close friend of mine. They lost the baby. Luckily, O- (negative rhesus) is rare in our part of the world than in the western world.
This is the one most people should be made aware of. Some women have been unfairly tagged as barren due to this issue.
