Bro. Those cooling systems are probably due for change. Though durable HVAC (Central AC) systems last for a much as 30 or more years; the maintenance and spare parts needed ( if the product is shipped from abroad) might become a problem.

@op the client determines (finally) if a building is going to have central AC or not.

HVAC systems have high initial financial outlay, but over time, compared to split ACs, their mmaintenance are more cost effective. Many clients however like to cut costs hence the choice for splits.

Hope you know the new senate building has been reverted to split AC system. Cost cutting measures.

I think because a lot of other Nigerians moved more to the west means that they took a bit of the Yoruba language as they went along. I can say authoritatively that many Nigerian slang have Yoruba origins.

I was speaking with an Igbo guy in Benue ( he barely knows the east) and he was saying "nko" is part of the Igbo word cos his father speaks it and it sounds Igbo. I corrected him that its Yoruba but he wouldn't believe. He kept saying the word again and again as if to make me see that he was correct.

For a lot of people here, those that can read Yoruba should simply get a copy of the Yoruba Bible. Its the oldest translated book in the country. Most of the words formed into slangs and common words today are there in the conc form.

I think sakara is more a Lagos addition to the Yoruba lexicon. Coined from shako. Some words like that started as slangs and ended up as normal Yoruba words.

Funny how Builders cum Engineers are quick to throw Architects under the bus. As a matter of Principle, Every building I designed back in Nigeria, I inform the clients upfront that I NOMINATE the engineer(s) for all my design and construction works. This is simple because so many Engineers out there are so damnnnnn LAZY! Gosh!

I once designed the private residence of a SS governor back in 2009. During construction, his brother- an Engineer came around and started screaming "What kind of rubbish design is this, you people want to kill somebody". I received a call from Lagos that this buffoon has instructed the people on ground to "knack columns and drop beams everywhere" for safety reasons. The Governor wanted a big hall where he could host VIPs regularly within his mansion. I as an Architect, I HATE COLUMNS OBSTRUCTING VIEWS INSIDE LIVING SPACE- its actually my pet peeve. So, I flew in and sent a message to the Client- the Governor that his comic brother should be taken off my site if my competency is still being valued with respect to the project. He called back and I explained everything to him. I went to the site the following day, the man started telling me how he has been practicing Engineering before I ventured into Architectural school and all bullshit.

To cut the story short, the building is still standing very firm today all post-construction stability tests conducted not only certified the building excellent but got recommendations. I shouldn't be teaching Engineers their jobs, we simply used inverted beams in most locations to hide the ugly proposed drop-beams which I believe to be an elementary solution that should be on the fingertips of "mr experience".

The underlying truth here is- Most engineers in Nigeria are comfortable with the default matchbox designs with columns and beams everywhere hence the complaints against Architects for their self-imposed mental deficiency.

I can see that just as we have our grouses with architects, architects have same for us. What i don't do however is say "most architects don't...", and I've seen many architects.

I personally like architect that give me something to think about in terms of their designs.

There is hardly any design that can't be constructed. However due to constraints that include cost some have to be modified or even remodelled. Remember it's the engr's job to say how your building is going to stand. You want to build a house on water? Great! We'll show you how, its up to you or the client to determine if the cost is worth it or weigh other options available. Options include, another form of engineering, an architect remodification or both.

The building where you used up stand (inverted) beams on slab, does it have another floor on it? If so, how did you handle that floor? Or is it a roof slab?.

It will be contructed. The construction principles are the same ( unless the 'Engr' you know isn't that good or isn't actually a civil Engr or doesn't have the requisite experience and/or transferable skills to handle such)

The major difference between construction companies and/or engrs is the equipments they are exposed to and the project management processes employees by the coys/engrs.The processes and equipment each company applies is based on its target construction market, simply business.

A construction coy that is used to bulding tall buildings will have to do a lot of process change to build a stadium. It may have to employ strategic subcontractors to handle outsourced areas that they can't handle themselves. This isn't particular to Nigeria or even africa and its the reason why bids are called for.

Civil Eng'g is actually very broad unlike Building technology that's more specific.

Under CE we have:

Transportation or Highway Eng'g ( deal with roads and bridge construction; traffic studies, rail construction etc)

Construction Eng'g (Is actually the construction arm of civil eng'g. Any aspect that needs physical construction will need the attention of the construction Engr.)


Strctural Eng'g (does the designs, determinns if and how possible the building or any other construction work will stand; and sometimes at whatever cost)

Geotechnical Eng'g ( determine the type of soil in a location and if the soil can take the cconstruction load, deal mainly with foundations, sometimes work with geologists)

Environmental Eng'g (under which we have refuse/ solid waste eng'g; and Water and wastewater Eng'g. The water and wastewater eng'g deal with dams, water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants etc)

Nice. I've had running issues with architects. Always needing to change things in site using experience to prevent what the client would suffer later if not corrected.

From door opening in a wrong direction, especially to a light switch, to doors in toilet areas obstructed by wash hand basins.

I've had to totally redimension and hence redesign a building after getting to site to realise that the space made available between the building and the fence in the drawing, (aparently to get the building approved) was not there on site. In fact the building was far bigger than the site!

Though the architect blamed the surveyor, surveyor gave us the site survey plan he gave to the architect and it was different from what the architect used. The architect had increased the dimensions on paper. Funny thing was that, even with the architect's dimensions,the building would only just fit within the borders of the site.

Another designed a roof that we had issues constructing . Thankfully we weren't the only contractors but were the first to get to roofing. We later did some little remodifications while he complained. Later he was telling other contractors who now had same issues to come and meet us for the solution he discussed with us ( he couldn't explain the solution to them cos he didn't know it).

OK. If the in-beam ( or secret beam) is to divided a span between two drop beams then it fine. My worry initially was that the in-beam was used to replace the drop beam location which is quite risky. And if in any case one has to delete a drop beam, you wouldn't want to use a y16 two top, two down.

The pictures seemed to show the in-beams in the location of the drop beams but I'm glad you cleared that up and that its not the case.

I Change my engine oil every 2500-2700 km. And I change the filters with it. Ive not had serious issues with that. Isn't 15000km too much? Unless he's using one of those synthesised engine oils.

Also, pls what causes car ac malfunction? Gas overfill or underfill? I've heard mechanics blame either of the two. I know this isn't the topic but a man's gotta solve his problem.

About the reinforcement though, was that slab designed with the in-beam? And if so, was it detailed to have two top and two down?

I'm a little uncomfortable with the current setup as shown in the pix above. I'm not too sure it will pass the serviceability limit state even if it passes the ultimate one. It can become a little more complicated if in future building owner decides to repartition...

If it was some other guys with lower quality of work, I'd just waka pass.

guy you be ideal Nigerian... but with reality on ground do you think some people care about all you highlighted. some people prefer that all the pipelines be blown up so that the country can be in darkness, most people here prefer we continue to flair the gas and never build any refinery. Do you think investor that choose to build refineries far away are mumu? they operate based on reality on ground.

The reason why the rail is applicable is because it reduces out dependence on the pipelines that are constantly burst or blown up.

Ofcourse those who make their money from burst pipelines and polluted environments won't like this; who knows, maybe they are even among those trying to shut the project out of the budget.

The country has to progress though, whether they like it or not.

With the supplementary, it means all the money they have diverted to their constituency project remains. With amendment the FG is asking for, it means removing what they added (Padded) and using the money for Calabar rail road. The funny thing is that most of the things added (padded) are for the North. Can you see how foolish and myopic our SS and SE senators are?

Our myopic SS and SE senators are busy shouting the calabar rail was not in the submitted budget. But their smart Northern senate colleague added Northern project which were not included in the submitted project. Can self destruction be more than this all in the name of shallow and bear parlour politics?


For those SS and SE peoples who does not understand the benefit of this rail project, let me explain it to them.

Today to travel from Calabar to lagos by bus cost atleast 7000 naira. with these rail it will cost about 3000 naira.
This will also reduce the number of people dying by road accident.
This will also reduce the traffic on our road.
This will also reduce exposure to high way arm robbers.

In summary, the truth is that all this budget controversy is because of only one reason, which is, Buhari have some level of Integrity that is not common among average Nigeria politician. Buhari integrity for sure is not 100%, but it is much higher than the integrity of an average Nigerian politician.

If Buhari was sharing Ghana must go,the Budget would have be considered perfect by NASS.

If we decide to go and study all the budget sent to NASS by the presidency since 1999, you will be shock that they have much more errors than this current budget. But yet most of them pass the house without major issues.

Some people accuse Buhari of not lobbying Senate and they try to compare Obama lobbying of US senate to Nigeria. In US, lobbying is all about supporting a senator's bill and federal intervention for thier constituency.

But in Nigeria lobbying means the following:
1. Share Ghana must go filled with Naira/dollar to NASS members
2. Stop Saraki glaring corruption trial
3. Look the other way when NASS members are involved in major corrupt practices.

Is that the kind of lobbying we want from our president?

1. Transportation of crude and refined petroleum along the rail axis.

This means that any investor now has more options of places to cite their refineries knowing they can get crude via rail and also transport the refined products via same route.

2. Transportation of gas.

Apart from more people now having access to gas for cooking, thereby reducing ddeforestation; our power plants can now be fed gas via rail, cutting off the problematic pipelines.

Just to play the devil's advocate, the HOR have extended a hand of friendship and peace to the Executive. I expect the Executive to return the favour, by admitting their errors and ineptitude ( No one is perfect). The President, should now accept this token of friendship and input the new additions into a supplementary budget, and thus pass the 2016 budget into effect, while the NASS reviews and peruses through the remaining errors in the budget

The rail can even help the fuel and light iissue.

Crude can be transported to the refinery in Lagos and even onward to Kaduna refinery via kano rail. This will reduce the dependence on often vandalised pipelines. Refined petroleum can go through same routes.

Also, gas can be easily transported to different gas powered power plants, also side-stepping the often vandalised gas pipelines.

The choice for development is ours, ( if only we can see the benefits)
