Thanks for the PM. My sincere apology for not responding. I'm going thru a #phase.
Glad, Ticha gave a comprehensive response.
Auctions have it's pro and cons, not just property auctions. The risk is just riskier in property! Pardon the tautology. In any case, the gain is also tremendously sweet with property auction.
- mind the gap (property state, unknown history...)
- be a DIY and/or have steady stream of known/reliable handyman and renovators
- have eye for details
- have disposable funds or access to funds free of encumbrances
LaXxOnebody:
Thank you very much for this detailed response.

I've also sent quite a few PMs to semmyk with no reply for a while. I do not know him personally or have any of his contact details, otherwise I would have reached out to him.

His style of analytical responses akin to what you've dropped here is what endeared me to his online personality. I wish him well wherever he is and will keep trying to reach him.

To all that reached out to me (@Ticha, @ LaXxOnebody and everyone that I have not mentioned,
Thanks, Merci, E see, Daulu, Nagode, Siyabonga, Enkosi

I pray that none of you will have LIFE happen to them. Especially the type that will take you to GROUND ZERO or almost ground ZERO

Is your valid study visa for SA (South Africa)?
Do you have NRF (SA) funding.
If you have PhD offer in SA (with supervisor funding or dept/school funding partial or full or NRF funding), it might be worthwhile going for it. Let your wife get on-board with study visa for SA instead of dependant.
While on the program in SA, you make your move to Ireland (or the YouKay).

The QTS is more prestigious/respected than the QTLS (just like BSc is better respected than HND in Naija). So getting the QTS or QTLS is the pathway into teaching. These are the 5 main routes into teaching.

1) For driving test, see summary on page 56. This also points to page 966 in part 2 of this thread.
6) Once you've completed your MSc, you don't need IELTS or other English test again. There's no need to even bother assessing your 9ja BSc.

Crosspost from Living in the UK thread part 3
Joyfuljoyful:
Hello everyone.
My son turned 4 this May and his words are not clear enough. He can recite the alphabets and spell 2 letter words, speak complete sentences, make conversations and can read and write but his speech is not completely clear. When he speaks fast. We can hardly hear what he's saying. Nursery teacher has asked that we fill a form for them to book him in to see the GP so he can be checked. I was wondering if its advisable to to fill the form?

We are afraid he may be stigmatised as having a condition and so trying to see if we can wait it out. We also dont want him to loose his confidence or retreat into himself in the process of being worked on by the specialist. We were hoping when he turns 4 he would outgrow it but we are still hhopeful. Whats your take on it please?
Thanks.
giselle237:

Do not be scared. If you listen to other kids in his class majority of them sound the way he sounds. Sometimes the teachers maybe don’t get that these sounds and speech will form at the appropriate time.
I have attached a photo- it is a summary of speech sounds he should be making. Look at the table.. and check against the sounds he should be making now at 4 years old.
The help they want to get for him is speech and language therapy I believe. If he is referred to the GP, GP’ll most likely do a referral to SALT and try to get him an appointment date with SALT. If this happens he will be assessed for elements like play, understanding, attention, speech etc.
I wont be too worried. Just go with the flow and you can give into any referrals whilst you practice during this summer holiday his sounds as attached.
If he is speaking fast, they tend to use a lot of jargons at this age too.. that’s probably the one the teacher says he is not speaking clearly. By 5 years all this would have cleared up in most children
Also no shouting and over correction. If he speaks the one you dont hear clearly, rather than correcting you say the right thing
Eg
Mommy I want to eat pish.. rather than pronounce f for fish as f , he pronounces it as ‘p’
The right thing for you to do is say okay my boy I will get you some fish to eat, you pronounce the right one and not start saying it is not phish .. it is fish
You make it worse this way

I use Scimago to check if a journal is worth my time/effort.
Obviously with time, even without Scimago, you'll be able to appraise the quality of an intended journal.
The more you get entrenched in your field, the more you'll 'determine' journal relevance and quality, as well as draft quality manuscripts.

A record one in five first-time buyers are signing up to mortgages of more than 35 years as interest rates soar.
But while spreading out the loans makes them more affordable in the short term, it means homeowners will accrue thousands of pounds more debt on the interest over the lifetime of the mortgage.

In many cases, they will still be paying off the deals well into their 70s.

Let's start off on this note.
- is the suspension with pay or without pay. Expectedly, it's with pay.
- is there a letter of suspension. If so, did the letter mentioned... suspension in view of investigation towards disciplinary hearing ... If the letter includes statement similar to the italic, you would be under the ambit of labour matter. Then ACAS becomes your go-to for advice or to lodge complaint towards employment Tribunal.
If not, you might have to go the Court route on civil litigation. Going employment dispute might work best though.
bigtt76:
Just in case there happened to be a recording, Who initiated the intimate discussions? The guy or lady?
PS: Bigtt76 asked if there's a recording. Kindly answer this.
If you're unsure, you'll need to demand.
NB: it appears your friend has been opening his mouth too wide. In law, silence is golden. One does not go gara gara, especially the typical 9ja way.
ojtopsy:
... ...
An ex patient or service user raised a sexual complaint against her previous carer since last year August and he has been suspended from work ever since. We first thought it would be over soon that its just to do investigation and come up with findings which will either proof guilt or innocence. But loo and behold up till now the issue is still on the table. The last action that sparked outrage was during one session he was asked some questions in which he mentioned hes schooling in a university, so they now went ahead to write the Uni to inform them hes under investigation so the uni asked him to stay away until he is cleared. I cant stomach this injustice anymore.
Please how does someone fight this kind of battle. It took months for the details of the so called offence that led to safeguard was even known o. the police have been invited and they couldnt find any evidence of misbehavior.
Yet these people are hell bent in destroying a mans life.
the only thing was that the girl was given a lift and the discussion was going intimate and he claimed he stopped it and dropped her off at the hospital and went his way. that very week wahala started and up till now na on top of the matter we still dey. No work since last year and the small consolation traing hes trying to do they blocked it without any formal conviction. this BS has to stop.
... ...
Herewith within the limit of one-sided [audi alteram partem]
-- ex patient or service user raised a sexual complaint
At the time of the alleged incident, it the patient a subsisting patient or ex patient
-- against her previous carer
Ditto, at the time of incident, is she, the patient, ex or current.
Was the complaint filed while a patient or ex patient
Is the patient claiming she stopped/revoke the care service due to the incidence
-- since last year August and he has been suspended from work ever since ... till now the issue is still on the table
From Aug 2022, we are looking upward of 9 mths. That's gross. Can investigation takes so long, yes it can. Should it, heck no.
Bearing no unforseen or unknown fact, your friend is within his right to file (labour) employment dispute.
Link: ACAS: Investigations for discipline ...
Approaching ACAS should be the first step, however, in most certainty,
your friend might need a good employment lawyer. Obviously, not charge and bail!!!

-- mentioned hes schooling in a university,
As mentioned earlier, your friend must learn to be circumspect with words while not uneconomical or labeled as uncooperative. It's a balance within the ambit of ... reserve the right to be silent 😷
-- so they now went ahead to write the Uni to inform them hes under investigation so the uni asked him to stay away until he is cleared ... ... the police have been invited and they couldnt find any evidence of misbehavior.
In this instance, let your friend approach the university with the police report (findings). On the basis of ... innocent until proven guilty ... the university should lift the bar.
If not, your friend lodge a dispute with the university ombudsman (if there's one) and/or OIAHE: Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education
Let your friend read more from Office for Students - https://www.officeforstudents.org.uk/for-students/ofs-and-students/complaints/complaints-about-a-university-or-college/

I'll be careful to use the word 'app'. Pls don't get me wrong or think highly of this.

Right from undergrad, more importantly at postgrad level, using reference managers is a must do!
They help you collate and organise your reference source. You can 'store' copy of the articles as well.
Most will assist you with using reference style (consistently), and you can switch ref style at will.
There are tons of reference manager. For students, ask your dept or University research/library for what they subscribe to.
However, you're not under any obligation or rather I should say, you're at liberty to make your own determination.
I've done workshops (two now, others in pipeline) for universities in 9ja, as I see many struggle in this regard.
PS: unlike Koonbey who is so bold, I on the other hand keep my professional profile away from NL. We all have our preferences and reasons.
Mendeley was great. I say was. It was until they were bought over and started encrypting the local database. Well, they've now gone 'online' with the new Mendeley reference manager.
Currently, I use Zotero. You have tons of plugins to 'make Zotero your own', AKA #customise
There are ways around the 300MB data/file storage size. However, not many would use up the 300Mb.
For me, I've got over 1.5Gb though

If your university offers Endnote, by all means use it. Even if you leave and no longer have subscription, you can import into Zotero (minding file storage limit though).
Inbtw, MS Word has an inbuilt reference manager, although not so versatile, but it gets the job done.
Nelsmannnnnnnnn:
... ... Is there an app for that?
hustla:
Did you use an app to organize your references?

You've got excellent suggestions here. Thanks everyone. Reason why this thread rocks.
Just bits here and there from me with some insights.
I guess you're tired of audit work plan paper review, test of control, substantive test, recons, reports, mgt comments and probably weekly (billable) timesheet. I get the feeling having have my share of ITGC.
Regarding pay, I'll be frank, sọju ni. Take your eyes 👀 9ff the dough for now.
Keep going with the 'small' firm. You'll get more industry knowledge: vertical and horizontal
With time, you can try the big 5 (4 + Grant Thornton) or the Banks and financial institution. Inbtw, NHS is also there.
One way to ease into consulting is to get seconded on advisory engagements or move to advisory services units with the audit firm. This will 'fast track' into BA, if BA is what you truly want.
The world is your oyster. Keep calm and get acquiring YouKay experience!
PS: if you can, get your ACCA done and dusted.
NB: With vertical and horizontal industry knowledge (coupled with your ACCA and maybe some BA courses - with or without), you'll land BIG and look back with smile.
Knowlegeseeking:
... ... So while studying, I worked (still work) with a smaller audit firm on a part time basis and they have hinted on retaining me after graduation. However, I don't like the pay they are offering simply because I am not chartered yet. The big 4 I worked with while in Nigeria has scared me because Omo, I worked like jacky.
I want soft life now. I'm considering continuing with the firm here in the UK but I'm scared of the workload and since I am not chartered yet, they may want to downplay the pay.
I'm just trying to explore other career options (Business analyst) I can do with my experience.
...
Knowlegeseeking:
... ... @justwise @lexusgs430 @solumtoya @semmyk @husla @koonbey @giselle237 @thathrguy and everyother person for your sound contributions.

I am looking at switching careers and I need insights from everyone. A little background about me.
I have worked in the big 4 as an auditor and have over 4 years experience. I am partly ACCA qualified. I want to continue my career as a business analyst. I have an M.Sc in International Accounting and Finance here in the UK.

PS: in your loving, beware of 3rd parties (especially those entrenched in the 'system'). Let your loving covers engaging and meaningful two-way communication.

How do I manage this? Just confused tbh cos she's also working full time even grossing more than I

L-1 category of visa are for intracompany transfers of managers and specialist between their home country and the States. Ordinary they'll be handled by the company and not individuals.

Hi Everyone, I’m about to schedule my visa appointment for an L-1 visa, I have all my documents ready. I can’t seem to find anyone who has applied for a similar visa and any form of suggestions for the visa interview will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

The term I relate with is Skilled Worker
The short response, here, is that as at 25 May '23, a person on student visa can switch to Skilled Worker visa

Kennyliga112:

Technically, they'll become out of status and would have to leave if there's no visa category for them.
However, being here already, it's left to be seen how things will play out. There'll 'always' be a way!!!

With this new law, what happens to families already in the UK? Like, couples wanting to each do a degree after the other has rounded off their studies? (Husband came in for Msc and brought family with the plan that when he finishes, his wife would then go for her msc) Would the new dependents have to go back? grin

As it became evident today, the student visa dependant curtailing has been long coming. Is it truly justified, I don't think so. Has it or is it been abused, we all know the answer/truth in our hearts.

Well, there are many changes that have kicked in or are in the pipeline.
The statement of changes was published on 9 March 2023: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/statement-of-changes-to-the-immigration-rules-hc-1160-9-march-2023

Read more 9n UKCISA site: https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/studentnews/1993/Student-update-Immigration-rules-changes-9-March-2023.
Changes affecting the Start-up route and the Innovator route
The start-up route and the innovator route have closed. They arebeing replaced by a new Innovator Founder route. PS : the new route allows applicants to come to the UK and establish innovative businesses without the £50,000 minimum funds requirement!

Changes affecting the Skilled Worker route:
Minimum salary level increasing and going-rate for salaries will be calculated using a 37.5-hour working week.

Changes to relationship requirements for partners under the Student, Graduate, and Skilled Worker routes:
From 25 July 2023, the requirements will be housed in a central part of the rules and the each route having its own specific requirements

There'll be changes to the Youth Mobility Scheme and the ETA (electronic travel authorisation) for certain citizen. Granted that these does not apply to most Nigerian.

You should be able to apply within the YouKay so long you meet the academic progress requirement
https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/extend-your-visa ... "show that your studies are at a higher academic level than your current course (called the ‘academic progress requirement’)" ...
bigtt76:
Please fam if a current Master's student want to enroll for another degree here how does he go about it? Would he need to go back home to process a study visa or can apply for same here?
