What I would suggest is to have a honest discussion about something important that you disagree on. If it goes well, then maybe you're ok. |
randomperson:Yea, thats just a lie. |
Pidgin2:Was that the first time you had quiet time after cutting your toe? If not, can you really be sure that your quiet time was what healed you? Suppose you noticed that the pain was gone after spending time on Nairaland. Would you have thought that you were healed by Nairaland? What happens with testimonies is that you notice the few coincidences that align with your religious views, but ignore the many that don't. |
God2man:A different explanation of why many things in the bible don't make sense when we reason about them. Some thing just don't make sense. |
Ferruccio:In life, nothing is guaranteed, but risks can be reduced. Seat belts do not guarantee your safety, but they reduce the risk of fatal injuries. It would not make any sense to say that, because seat belts don't guarantee your safety, you will not use them. |
God2man:You've made an astute observation: that the things written about God in the Bible don't really make sense to our brains in a consistent way. God is just, yet unjust. All powerful, yet limited. All loving, yet cruel. You assume that the reason we don't get it is the limitation of our minds, but there's an alternate explanation: that it's just a collection of outdated fiction. What makes you sure that this alternate explanation is wrong? |
donnie:Any evidence for this? It would surprise me if the FRC chairman was truly lying against the churches in a public interview, as you're implying. |
Sibrah:Yea. I actually support the establishment of universities by churches. Those universities provide good education to rich students, thus freeing up more space for poor students in public universities. Also, they reduce the need for rich parents to send their kids abroad, thus saving forex. However, I also agree with Mr Obazee's concerns. It's not right for a commercial entity to be allowed to escape accountability by simply hiding under the umbrella of a non-profit organization. The solution is for the churches to incorporate the schools as independent companies. ([s]Pastor Adeboye and others should be allowed to be GOs for life if they believe that this is God's will; but they should not be running for-profit businesses.[/s]) not sure if this is relevant due to lack of information |
I support the forced divestment of private schools and other commercial businesses from churches. ([s]That's better than forcing tenure limits on church leaders. It is better to tackle the problem directly instead of using indirect methods that will lead to unintended consequences. The government has the right to insist that churches should sell off their commercial businesses, but not to dictate spiritual matters like leadership. A government that fights religion will be fought by religion. The result will be a more divided country. We can't afford that.[/s]) not sure if this is relevant due to lack of information. |
God2man:It is true that certain prayers cannot be answered because they are unreasonable. If I ask God to make me the richest person in the world, and you do the same, both of our prayers can't be answered. Others have pointed out that Jesus should not have promised to grant us anything we ask in his name, knowing that there are some prayers that can't be answered. That's a good point, but here's another one. Many of the things people ask God for are things that can and should be granted. For example, divine protection of vulnerable people from ritualists, rapists, murderers, kidnappers, armed robbers, and other violent criminals. Prayers for an end to endless cycles of bloodshed in wars all over the world. Prayers for God to grant us wise leaders who are not corrupt. Prayers for healing from incurable diseases such as cancer, which kills many children painfully. Prayers to end the terror of ISIS and Boko Haram. Is there any humane reason for God not to answer such prayers, if he exists? |
I'm not happy with this sort of thing. Private organizations should be free to structure themselves in the most efficient way. On the short term it may seem to be beneficial, because some fraudulent church leaders might be exposed, but it's a slippery slope that leads to a bad place imho. |
Bleep all communist and fascist mass murderers. I am an anti-communist, anti-fascist atheist, like most atheists on Nairaland and in the west. |
How did he know that eating kolanuts would have led to his death? Kolanuts are just like coffee, right? |
lionlamb020:But do you agree that prayer does not work? Would you accept the observation that the "thing greater than us", even if it exists, evidently doesn't answer prayers? |
The code seems like a bad idea. It shouldn't apply to private companies. Imagine the outcry if the US Gov forced Zuckerberg to leave Facebook. |
Vanceastro:This is helpful. Did you get that from my post or from the replies? I expressed disapproval but I guess the replies coloured your opinion. and then went on a parallel route attacking the jewish god- which should have had nothing to do with the op-He said he was raised a Jew, implying that Judaism is his religion. I tried to show that it was highly unlikely that Mark sincerely follows that. |
Vanceastro:Can you elaborate on what you found to be childish? Like, what are the aspects of the post that make it childish? Is it any of these things? |
Is it: - The admission of unhappiness about Mark saying he's not an atheist? - The inability to believe that Mr Zuckerberg is actually religious? - The seemingly unnecessary criticism of male genital mutilation? - The 'optics' of referring to Yahweh as the "Jewish God"? Tnx. |
Atheists have said that this thread is embarrassing, a baby thread, a mistake, etc. Could you please explain what makes it embarrassing? Tnx. |
TRADELYN:Consider yourself snubbed, sir. |
If they didn't believe that witches actually existed, there would've been no reason for them to do this. False beliefs have harmful consequences. |
JeffreyJamez:Why does that matter? |
Ranchhoddas:If hell exists, the bible section must be much bigger than the nairaland section. The old testament has driven millions of people away from faith. |
I was going to post a similar thread but this one looks just right. I can't wait to see the answers that creationists will provide. |
Use the money to pay your school fees. There's nothing like a once in a lifetime training program me in my view. There will be others. |
Every website needs upgrades. I will continue to try to do the very best that I can to make Nairaland as awesome as it can possibly be. |
I've said, many times, that debating with dishonest apologists is largely a waste of time. I guess calling atheists 'silly' is more persuasive. ![]() |
Thx for your helpful suggestions. I really appreciate them. |
davidovic, can you post a picture of the dog breastfeeding the goats? That will be far more convincing than the ones you've posted. |
Bigcake:This is what religious brainwashing does to people. In your warped mind, a dog nursing a cat is despicable, but killing your pets is perfectly ok. And I'm sure that you didn't ask a vet to put them down humanely. You must have beaten them to death or slit their throats with a knife. |
