This is irrelevant. As I said, I'm yet to meet anyone who wasn't introduced to idea of God through religion. If you know one, tell us. Deists are like children who discovered that the things their parents told them about Santa were lies, but still believe that there is a "real Santa" out there.

I'm talking about the idea that God exists. Most people got that idea from religion. I'm yet to meet anyone who first got it outside religion.

It is much better, but I don't think it makes sense to insist on the existence of a person whose existence cannot be verified or disproved. God is a product of religion. Why hold on to God after being freed from religion?

Yes, because it keeps you from dedicating your life to something that is not true. From fasting and praying to someone who doesn't even exist. From reading an ancient collection of literature as if it's an accurate history book and forcing yourself to follow its outdated ideas.

I believe in enjoying my life and helping others to enjoy their lives too. To enjoy life is to have a pleasant, meaningful, & successful life imho.

I am against religion because I think it is based on false beliefs, which are harmful if acted upon. I am also anti-communist and anti-fascist.

I am anti-religion, but I don't hate religion or God. I only get angry about things like "witch" burning. If you criticize religion in a serious way, people say you are angry. But if you go against religion in a jovial way, people accuse you of mocking their beliefs. You just can't win. I don't go about calling Christians nasty names Just because I disagree with them. Yet you're doing just that, which makes you the angry and hateful one.

Most atheists are agnostic. They don't know for sure that some God doesn't exist, but choose to withold belief until they have good evidence.

However, based on the little I've read people didn't start up by inventing God. Monotheism is actually a recent phenomenon in human history. People started out by worshipping powerful things in nature like the sun, moon, thunder, etc. Then they came up with the concept of gods that control different aspects of their lives, such as gods of war (Yahweh of the bible and Ogun of the Yorubas) and goddesses of fertility. They offered sacrifices to the gods that were responsible for the type of blessings that they needed. Then they developed the concept of a hierarchy among the gods, with one god being recognized as the leader of the other gods and the first god to have existed. For the Hebrews this was known as Elohim, and for Yorubas this was Eledumare/Olorun/Olofi (a kind of trinity I guess).

At some point in history, some Jewish followers of Yahweh who were linked to a king came to believe that their god of war was the top god and the Israelites were his chosen people. With the king's support, they decided that no other god should be worshipped in Israel. But the Israelites already had a body of literature based on the idea of a pantheon of gods including Yahweh with Elohim as the leader, so they had to rewrite their literature to fit the idea of Yahweh as the god of Israel. They altered some of the existing stories an added theirs, but they didn't do it perfectly. So in Genesis, there are two stories of the origin of man, and God is referred to as Elohim many times. So when God says "let us do X" in Genesis, that was Elohim, the head of the gods, addressing the other lesser gods, such as Yahweh. And Baal, by the way.

Somewhere along the line followers of Yahweh became convinced that not only was the god of Israel the most powerful god in the world, a notion based on ethnic pride, he was also the only true god in the world. All other gods were false gods. Thus, God was born. We know that Yahweh wasn't always considered as God because there are verses of the bible that entertain the notion of other gods. E.g. stuff like "who is like unto thee, O Yahweh, among the gods, who is like thee?" Btw, Yahweh was a jealous god, so it was totally ok to kill anybody who worshipped a different god, whether they were foreigners whose land the Israelites wanted or fellow Israelites who dared to worship Baal.

Monotheism is an intolerant concept born of tribalism, arrogance, and a desire to justify acts of violence against worshippers of other gods.

Note: This is my current understanding but I most certainly got some of the details wrong. Later I will recheck and correct the wrong parts.

Apologists like KingEbukasblog have big balls. It takes big balls to try to prove something by posting a piece of evidence that contradicts it.

I am certainly an atheist off Nairaland. I don't attend church or pray. When I read the Bible, it's just for personal entertainment and debates.

This is unfortunate. If not for the explicit "no", I would have said that he was dodging the question, but he said it. He threw atheism under the bus. He has made it very clear to everybody that he doesn't identify as an atheist and doesn't want to be considered as an atheist. Bless him. This doesn't mean he's not an atheist, of course; an atheist is simply someone who doesn't hold a belief in the existence of any God.

I don't believe for one second that Mark believes in the existence of the Jewish God. The one who forbade Jews from eating pork instead of teaching them how to cook it properly. Who created foreskins to protect the sensitive tips of male organs, but then ordered the Jews to cut them off their newborn babies. Who permitted Jews to enslave foreigners and treat them as property, even though he created all people. Who made women menstruate but then declared that a menstruating woman is unclean, and anyone who touches her - even her husband - is also unclean. Who banished children of single parents and their descendants from entering his temple for 400 years (the 10th generation).

I don't believe that Mark believes in that God. And since he hasn't talked about any other God, I continue to believe that he is an atheist. He may choose to call himself an agnostic, a cultural Jew, or whatever helps Facebook and his family, but that doesn't mean he's not an atheist.

We can condemn the widespread practice of going to church on Christmas day to listen to sermons, but the rest of Christmas is just fine.
