GoldenGTV:If someone's accounts keep getting banned consistently, they will eventually learn. It's the lack of consistency that empowers them. |
RussellRutherfo:What alternative would you suggest? |
MichaelSokoto:We will create a Christian section which will also have oath taking. |
ahnie:My supermods were reluctant, so I banned a ton of people myself. For hours and hours. But I couldn't sustain that indefinitely. It's like cleaning a house with multiple toddlers. As soon as you stop cleaning, the house will get dirty again. My supermods could not be persuaded to handle the spammers the way that I wanted them to. What has changed is that I am ready to bring in new people to do the job and if they fail I am ready to replace them as many times as necessary in order to find someone who will do it. The problems of Nairaland will always be on my mind due to my presence. Solutions will be found. But I need the assistance.of Nairalanders. I cannot do it alone. We need people who can be trusted with responsibilities such as the ending of name-checking on the crime section of Nairaland. |
abba190:See the Romance section. |
GoldenGTV:We will ban then and delete their tribalistic posts. We will ban everyone that uses ethnic slurs. |
Thazard:I think you are right about that. |
Fellow Nairalanders, I'm pleased to wish you a Happy New Year!! 2024 will be the year of Nairaland's resurgence. I will face Nairaland squarely like I used to before the discouraging Data Loss Incident of 2014. I will hire more hands to help us to improve Nairaland. The problems of Nairaland that we should have solved years ago will be solved. * We will defeat tribalists, trolls, & spammers. * We will complete our advertising platform. * We will improve the UI and UX. * Home page topics will be educative & fresh. * We will reverse the anti-women trends. However, I must warn you that things will get worse before they get better. Please stand with us and fight for us as Nairaland faces the tough challenges of 2024, which have already started. Happy New Year and thanks for using Nairaland! Seun Osewa, Nairaland's Founder. |
biaframaster200:disqualified based on your username. |
jmoore:They need to prove themselves first. Reddit doesn't have paid moderators as far as I know, but we do. |
Fergie001 has been recruited as a section moderator. Section moderation is unpaid, but it's a stepping stone to paid supermoderation. |
Beverlyjean:See the attached screenshot. Mynd44 did the right thing by banning him for one of his tribalistic posts. However, he did not go through his posts to delete all the other tribalistic posts like the one you saw. This allowed the post to continue to cause harm and created a wrong impression that the tribalist has not been punished. Two things to do differently: (1) go through every tribalist's history and hide all the tribalistic posts. (2) indicate that they have been banned.

raumdeuter:Moderators can ban the crap out of them. It they have multiple handles, those handles can be terminated (10 year ban). There have been two times when a supermod bizarrely informed me that he/she has stopped banning the worst offenders because they usually register new accounts. So if a new member innocently broke a rule, they'd get banned, but if a known offender broke a rule, he/she would just ignore him. I was like 🤯 |
Roland17:Actually, tribal bigots don't bring traffic. The less toxic a platform is, the more traffic it will attract. That's why I had no financial concerns whatsoever about banning the crap out of tribal bigots on Nairaland. But the supermods didn't cooperate, so I had to do a lot of it myself. Once I got tired and left it to them, that was the end. If you ask them they will insist that they are doing the job, but the data says otherwise. |
I thought they said inflation in Nigeria was caused by expensive food? Now they are saying our food is cheap? Both cannot be true, can they? |
SlavaUkraini:Mynd44 is pro-APC, but he is not a tribalist. In all our extensive and explosive interactions, I have detected no hint of tribalism whatsoever. |
I'm overwhelmed right now; phew. |

I would like to address the allegations on Twitter about tribalism on Nairaland or that I am some kind of tribalist, because I was told that not addressing them means that they are true. The more extreme variants of that claim are being pushed primarily by south-eastern tribalists who feel that south-western tribalists have the upper hand on Nairaland in their battles with each other. Whenever they are banned after breaking rule 2 of Nairaland, they will go back to Twitter to lament about how Nairaland is against their tribe and how I'm personally working against them. I urge you to disregard any accusation against me or against Nairaland if the accusers cannot prevent hard evidence to support their claims. These people make things up, and people just believe them. For avoidance of doubt, I have always been a supporter and admirer of south-eastern people. I will never have any tribalistic bone in my body. I am a human who views people as humans first. The micro-kernel of truth in the mountain of lies is that Nairaland is under-staffed. The staff I have do not moderate as efficiently as I want them to. They also struggle with following my instructions. So if you go to Nairaland looking for tribalism, you will find it in certain areas, just as you will if you search Twitter for tribalism, because of people whose main business online is tribal trolling. However, I want Nairaland to be better than Twitter. I want to improve the consistency of moderation on Nairaland. For this reason, I am in the process of recruiting more people to help. |
Nwaotu10:It means you miss your Dad and you've been looking forward to eating chicken during the holiday season. When you're eating Christmas chicken, you should remember your Dad and talk about him with the rest of your family. Remember his support and generousity. |
tivta:You miss your old friends and the times you had together. You should probably reconnect with them, if you can. |
RUGGEDWEAVER:This suggests that you harbour negative thoughts about your brother. You need to have a long talk with your brother to resolve your issues. |
ademijuwonlo:You are a potential green thumb - someone who is good at growing plants. You need to start a garden in your compound as soon as possible. |
You need to call or send someone to the motor park where you boarded the vehicle and the one where you were dropped. That's where they are supposed to deposit lost items. |
iHart:The supermods have refused to take care of the tribal bigots. Just recently one of them was telling me that she doesn't ban them because of traffic after I clearly said that the people who engage in tribal slurs will not be missed when we ban them. I will start penalizing them harshly. |
HardMirror:Congratulations! |
We need to see the car in motion. Could you provide that? |
Prigidypogodo:Thanks for this beautiful thread. We had to to suspend it from the home page to get our message out first; sorry about that. Read it here: https://www.nairaland.com/7945193/nairaland-partially-back-work-progress |
Dear Nairalanders and Advertisers. Nairaland's server was taken down by our host's abuse team because of an abuse report that wasn't attended to on time. After rectifying the error, we brought the server back for a few minutes, but they decided to take the server down again. Since then, we haven't heard from the abuse team, yet the support team keeps insisting that only the abuse team can help us. So we had to transfer Nairaland to a temporary host in order to bring it back to you. A VERY time-consuming process. We are not fully back, even though most features of the site are working. We still have a long way to go. Additional downtime is likely; don't let it alarm you. There's a lot more to say, but I have to go back to work to ensure that our return is permanent. Please forgive us for the stress we caused. We appreciate the love and support that you showed us during the ordeal. Nairaland is too important for us to let this happen again. Best Regards, Seun Osewa. |
SoftP:It's coming. Still trying to bring the site back fully. |
