TV/MoviesRe: Typecasting In Nollywood: Why? by Seun(mod): 1:40pm On Jan 07, 2008
Typecasting is casting. That's the fact. You have to choose an actor that is believable in that role. Typecasting is a form of specialization. Some people in Hollywood are known as "character actors". For example, you might find an actor who always plays a "thug" because he looks and talks like one. Imagine how ridiculous it would seem if someone who looks like me was chosen as a thug, no matter how good he was as an actor. You wouldn't believe it!

TV/MoviesWhat Can Be Done To Improve Nigerian Movies? by Seun(mod): 1:32pm On Jan 07, 2008
I posted a thread titled "what kind of movies would you like Nigerians to make" but people kept butting in with technical and business ideas about how Nigerian movies can be improved. For that purpose, I've decided to create this thread.

So what do I think Nigerian producers and directors can do to improve their movies?

1) They should stop casting unprofessional stars:
Some so-called stars are so spoilt that they would arrive late to the location without having read the script. How can you give a convincing performance when you've not taken the time to study the material and you're being paid obscene amounts of money? Directors who want to make quality movies should strive cast stars who are also talented serious, humble and hardworking, for better performances.

2) They Should Spend More Time Rehearsing:
For the same reason.

By the way, I'm an aspiring producer, so I am basically advising myself too.

Yeah. The thing is, my comment about art movies was a throwaway comment. We are all artists.
TV/MoviesRe: What Kind Of Movie Do You Want Nigerians To Make? by Seun(mod): 11:13pm On Jan 06, 2008
Let's not go off topic. This thread is not about how to make good Nollywood movies; it's about wht people want. The issue of how to get what people want and what it costs can be discussed in the movie business section. Thanks guys!
TV/MoviesRe: What Kind Of Movie Do You Want Nigerians To Make? by Seun(mod): 10:26pm On Jan 06, 2008
It's useful to know that a lot of people are interested in such a movie, though, if one can acquire the rights.
TV/MoviesRe: Art Films by Seun(mod): 8:20pm On Jan 06, 2008
but that is a stereotype in of itself, and the kind of reasoning that is used to defend the crap that Nollywood puts out: the idea that if you make something that is of better quality, that the audience will not "get" it. (or as one producer once put it to me: "our audience is not sophisticated, so why should our movies be?"wink
I'm merely suggesting that those "good" art films that nobody gets are actually bad films.
If you open your mouth and words come out but nobody understands, you're a bad communicator.

What is Burning Grass? huh Never heard of it. However, I think your point about adaptations is a popular one.
TV/MoviesArt Films by Seun(mod): 6:07pm On Jan 06, 2008
NOBODY is talking about making "art movies"
By "art movie" I mean "a 'good' movie that is not expected to make money because most people won't get it".

that's a generalization and a stereotype. art movies do not have to be boring.
Yes, it's stereotypical. Sorry. But here's what I was responding to:

I WILL RATHER MAKE A GOOD FILM THAN JUST MONEY
He seems to think that making money will hamper his quest to make a good movie. He doesn't seem to realize that good movies usually make money and that profitable movies are usually quite good. Nollywood is successful because, if you can look beyond the superficial flaws, many of their movies are actually quite good. Beyond that, some compromises they make are acceptable because a flawed movie is still better than no movie. When you say you believe in quality but you're yet to raise enough money to make a movie your way, you are not better than the hustler in Nollywood who has made 4 or 5 average or bad movies. In Nigeria, we make lots of bad movies and some good ones. In other countries, except India and the US, they make no movies. They don't even have any movies to criticize. And the few movies they make are technically perfect but boring compared to our 'junk'.

But that's not what this thread is about, is it? It's about a short film in need of actors.

HOW CAN I REST ASSURED THAT MY SCRIPTS WON'T BE USED WITHOUT ME BEING EXCLUDED FROM THE EVENTUAL PROFITS?
In some countries, you can register your screenplay online with the writer's guild. In Nigeria, you probably have to deal with producers you trust, although I've heard that there's also a way to register a script in Nigeria

A producer that cares about quality won't even think about stealing a script. First, the cost of a script is not high compared to the cost of getting name actors to star in your show and all the logistics, so how much money is the producer saving? Secondly, the producer will still have to pay a writer to rewrite the script. If he steals your script, he won't be able to ask you to rewrite the script to suit his purposes, and he won't be able to get a new script from you - or other writers who know what he did. Such behavior is just not worth it for serious producer.

The purpose of registration is to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the script is yours since you registered it first.

The best way to operate is to use the scripts you've written as samples of what you can do, and distribute them widely. When a producer reads the script, he may not buy it, but he will call you the next time he needs a script!
TV/MoviesRe: A Short Film By Nigerians: Please Review by Seun(mod): 2:52pm On Jan 05, 2008
What can I say? You asked for a review, so:
- The night scenes were too dark.
- The gossip scene was promising, but nothing came out of it. How was it relevant?
- The 'blue eyed one' looks like a model. I was initially confused about what she saw in the guy.
- But her scene was far to static. The camera and the girl never moved.
- It was rather slow for a short movie, it played like a music video with words.
- It turned out to be a cute little movie, in the very end. Keep developing your craft, bro.

I WILL RATHER MAKE A GOOD FILM THAN JUST MONEY
How can a movie make money if it is not a "good film"?
What you think is good, others might hate, and vice versa.

Nigerian movies of the moment may not appeal to everybody,
but they put food on the table for the people that make them.
That is what makes it an industry. And art films are boring, by the way.

Anyway, send me a mail if you need anything beyond actors for your film wink

You don't need a critic's organization. You can just start a Nollywood movie review magazine/column. That's all.

TV/MoviesRe: What Kind Of Movie Do You Want Nigerians To Make? by Seun(mod): 9:16pm On Jan 04, 2008
Very nice. Let me translate your requests to action points for filmmakers:
1) Clear and sharp images - i.e. use DVD instead of VCD and light properly.
2) Good delivery of lines - this means more rehearsals, good casting, and careful directors.
3) Good audio and music dubbing - record dialogue carefully and employ audio editors.
4) Avoid goofs that impede the suspension of disbelief - happens in Hollywood too!

You can tell them what you want to see, but you can't really prescribe the solutions (cam, etc). They're the experts! wink
